Once again Girish, you have hit the nail on the head. Camera pre-settings are all important to get clear, shap photos. Thank you for this update on the use with the extender. I think I must try to get hold of one.

Thank you very much for your videos! I would like to buy a canon TC 1.4x iii and I wonder if it will be compatible with a 7d mark ii and a sigma 150-600 C. have you ever been able to try it? Thanks in advance!

Hi, no, I haven't used it with a 150-600. Perhaps you should rent out a TC for a couple of days and see if it goes well. Thanks for watching and commenting on my video, I appreciate it 😀

Thank you for the answer. It doesn't work, the autofocus is almost unable to focus: the sigma 150-600 c + canon tc 1.4X are not made to be used together with a 7D mark ii :) autofocus does not work at F9. strangely, it works very well with a canon 5d mark iv which, as with the central collimator of the 7d mark ii, allows focusing up to F8.

Which extender is it? Is it the Mark III? The Mark III will work a little better than previous versions

Nicely done, thanks. I don't know if you've had a chance to test the TC on a newer camera, like the Canon R7. But with the addition of bird eye tracking, do you think the AF has an easier time acquiring focus when the bird is larger in the viewfinder?

I haven't explored using teleconverters on mirrorless cameras and I am not yet aware of any AF limitations when you use them. Thanks for watching my video and leaving a comment, I appreciate it 😊

@@TheOpenImage Thanks for replying, I have a Canon R7, which I use with the RF100-500L mostly for birds/wildlife. With a crop sensor (1.6x), the extra reach is useful (160-800mm effective field of view). Although some reviewers recommend only using the RF 1.4x teleconverter with "bright" prime lenses on full frame bodies, I am impressed by the image quality with my set-up (max aperture 7.1 at 500mm). By adding the RF 1.4x TC, the maximum aperture is F10 with a 700 mm focal length, comparable to Canon's 800 mm F11 prime, which I also considered. While there is some softening of the image, image quality seems no worse than cropping the unmagnified image to match the field of view, at least in good light. And autofocus performance doesn't seem to be appreciably affected. So my choice came down to other factors, such as convenience, autofocus tracking, ease of composition when the viewfinder is filled, etc. While it's still too early to offer a definitive opinion, I think there are scenarios where I am happy to have the TC, as long as I don't regard it as an "all purpose super zoom". And I do have a sense that the bird eye tracking finds it easier to "lock on" when the subject is larger, especially for small birds. I'm not sure how different the RF TC is from your EF II, but I'm really quite happy with it. Thanks again.

A crop sensor camera does not give us "extra reach", like camera manufacturers want us to believe. Using a crop sensor camera does not magnify the image any more than a full frame body. I find lenses with their widest aperture any narrower than f/5.6 to be useless at all levels. With a teleconverter at f/8 or f/10 we can attempt to click birds in flight against the sky, with light falling on them, but not much more. Mirrorless bodies have better IQ at higher ISO values (but not the compact ones), so we may end up taking more keepers than with a DSLR, but lenses such as the 800 f/11 may be good to click pictures of the moon, and that's all. I don't understand why Canon have not yet come out with a mirrorless version of the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 II, but what would be amazing is a 200-500 f/5.6, just like Nikon have for their DSLR cameras. While I like, and still use Canon cameras, I feel they've let me down. On the other hand, Nikon has always provided wildlife photographers with world-class affordable lenses and cameras. At the moment, almost all "affordable" mirrorless lenses across brands seem to be a bunch of e-waste, and the good lenses are priced at par with diamond-studded gold crowns exclusively manufactured for royalty. Budget-wise it's not a good time to be getting into photography.

@@TheOpenImage You're right. I should have referred to the "effective field of view" (FOV) rather than the short-hand "reach", which was inappropriate, since the image circle is unchanged by the sensor. But I'm somewhat mystified by your aversion to maximum apertures narrower than F5.6. That might have been an issue with DSLRs, where autofocus failed to function beyond F8, but most mirrorless cameras have no autofocus problems even at F16 or F22, which I find liberating. And when using the TC, I find the background separation very agreeable. In fact, the resulting "depth of field" is often so razor-thin that it further limits the maximum aperture. As for worsening noise with smaller apertures/less light, I think it's largely mitigated with modern sensors and de-noising software. That said, I find the TC unusable for birds in flight, simply because I can't keep the birds in frame when the equivalent FOV is 1120 mm (1.6 x 1.4 x 500), which is just another reason to avoid treating the TC as a "poor man's telephoto". As long as these caveats are remembered, I still think it's a useful addition to my gear. Mind you, I don't know how the Canon RF 1.4x TC compares to the EF III extender you tested. In any case, I found your tips helpful. Thanks again.

You’re right on many counts. It’s just that I love clicking pictures in low light: very early in the morning and even just after sunset, and so I love fast lenses. At the end of the day fast lenses always outperform. Using higher ISO values blow up highlights in a manner that I don’t quite like because I find it very difficult to colour correct those images to how the colours actually appeared to me, or how I want to interpret the emotion of the moment. Would love to see some of your work!

All brands have good cameras for wildlife photography. It's important to understand the features and functions of a camera that are a must for wildlife photography before you invest in a camera. I do this Introduction to Wildlife Photography session via Zoom that will help you to get started with wildlife photography on a budget.
