I left it out here to try and keep the title simpler, but notice I've included it on other reviews of IS lenses, so I'll see if I can change it...

I have this lens and i must say it's the best lens i ever had so far. It really helped me on not so good lightning conditions. The only thing that bothers me with this lens is that it's not an L series lens!

James, the question is 15 times what exactly? If you're meaning 15 times the standard magnification of the human eyey, then that starting point is approximately 50mm equivalent. Since this lens when zoomed-in is equivalent to 88mm, then its maximum magnification is about 1.76 times. The actual total of the zoom range though is 55 divided by 17, which equals 3.2x.

Yes it will work fine with any Canon body which has an APS-C sensor and an EF-S compatible lens mount, like the 30D and 40D. It won't work with the full-frame bodies like the 5D / 1Ds Mark III.

That's correct, it won't work on any body which has a sensor larger than an APS-C model. The 1D line have a slightly larger APS-H sensor.

@extantia This is the filter I have for my 17-55mm. It's pretty basic and does what I want which is prevent dust from entering the lens. B+W is a great brand. B+W 77mm Clear UV Haze with Multi-Resistant Coating (010M)

also a super lens but with weddings taking hour of work its not the lens u wanna be shooting with 6 or 7 hours in a row (heavy material) so thatswhy they are 2nd best, not to mention the excessive price tag, but not having a full frame u will lose alot of these last 2 lenses since the crop factor i think 1.6 of the aps-c sensor will turn them into not usable lenses in wide range( for instance the 17-40 atached to aps-c 1.6 crop factor sensor its a very good lens.hope i helped.

I have used the Lens on my 400D and it is great! Best EF-S Lens in my opinion. But I miss the water-protection like the 24-70 L has. The 24-70 L is now mounted on my 5D and it is even a little bit better than the 17-55 IS USM

Weddings eh? The Canon 70-200mm F/4.0L IS USM is not good for indoor shots and full-length shots. Although it is good for candid shots because of the big focal length. BUT, the aperture is quite narrow and will give you blurry pictures(in low light conditions). I would personally go with this lens PLUS, I'll include these bad boys when I do get this lens: Hood 580EX II Diffuser for the Speedlight B+W UV filter Circular Polarizer(just for the fun of it)

It strikes me as a little bit odd that nothing is being said about the image quality of this lens. It doesn't have the build quality of L lenses, but it's optical quality gets pretty close to some of them, with two UD and two aspherical lens elements built into it. I think that could be an additional reason to prefer this lens to let's say the EF-S 18-55 and EF-S 17-85.

Gordon Laing Don't get me wrong, I do appreciate your review (and you answering me), but don't you think these specific L lens like glasses shouldn't also be mentioned here? Do you think this kind of lens (or the 18-55) would have reasonable enough zoom for taking pictures of hockey or other sports (I mean decent action shots and not just a landscape of the ice.) from the nosebleed seats of a big arena? It seems like it would be based on the video, but I just want to be sure. The pro arenas don't allow fans to take in lenses that are more than 80mm. I've used Lumix cameras with maximum success for a point and shoot superzoom, but I want to make the jump to DSLR.

I recently bought this lens for my 600d and the only way to get a sharp focus is by manually selecting only the center AF point. On automatic all images are out of focus at all focal lengths and apertures. Is this normal?

I was looking for a 60D camera review, but I didn't see one in your youtube library. However, I had a question regarding the info from your website on the 60D. The review there says, "No continuous AF during movies"... Is there a camera/ DSLR in the Canon line that has the continuous AF with a flip LCD screen? Just curious. And thank you for all the great videos!

Gordon, can you also compare this lens with Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX DC HSM OS. Ignoring the price; which one do you think is a better option? Many reviews talk about Sigma as "razor sharp" however I ve had the chance to experiment with one of those- and not really impressed. Do you think, CANON would give a far superior image quality and sharpness? Thanks

@MMasud08 Thank you for the reply. So what is the least optically obtrusive filter if lens protection is the primary criteria? During my last foray into photography when Kodachrome 64 was the gold standard for 35 mm SLR's, the standard UV filter was recommended for lens protection.

Ohh get a wood and a polarizer 150 more yakk

@MMasud08 Thank you again. To start, my plan is to buy the Canon T2I body only, the 17-55mm, and the B+W filter with the purpose of doing some filming for independent shorts and music accompaniment vids. Unless, you would recommend getting the camera kit with the 18-55mm for circumstances where I might not want to risk damage to the 17-55mm. BTW, what additional lens might you recommend? The 17-85mm looks promising.

@cameralabs
@cameralabs 6 лет назад
I sometimes wonder about this myself. It's been a long time since I've used it, so can't say how the quality compares against modern lenses. BUT it remains the only EF-S f2.8 zoom, so if brightness or light gathering power are important, it's still an option. That said, I think I'd prefer the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 nowadays if brightness is more important than reach. If reach is more important than aperture, then go for one of the newer Canon EF-S zooms, like the 18-135mm.

To bad Canon did not create a 2.8 Trinity APSC EF-S lens. And it's too late. They won't put more money on this mount. And I have the 90D & SL2. The EF 2.8 trinity lenses are bigger and I won't move to FF DSLR. No need for me. Mirrorless ways later, because it's a different system and money to invest.
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 3 года назад
Yes, I agree, I wish they'd made L lenses in thr EFS mount specifically for APSC. I feel this is an advantage of Fujifilm's X system in that it was always and will only ever be APSC, so there's budget and premium models designed for that. Canon, Nikon and Sony support both FF and APSC so they will inevitably encourage you to adopt one over the other.
@pgulysse1
@pgulysse1 3 года назад
@@cameralabs I have the feeling camera makers with APSC DSLR lines did not take their APSC lines seriously (or did not do enough to support those lines of products) or their thinking was, a professional or enthusiast who has mean$ or who is ready to invest in systems will go FF and buy fast & big FF glasses, and (additionally) will add a couple of advanced APSC Bodies (D500, EOS 7D) in their bag. You have FF bodies and lenses, then it's ok to add those advanced APSC bodies... Sigma, Tokina, Tamron did try to offer APSC lens options... Now all makers are moving to mirrorless for sure... Same logic? I will never recommend a friend who is serious to look at those APSC lines (EF-M, Nikon Z-APSC or Sony APSC- but they have fast glasses-)... and you are right the only maker who is serious with APSC is Fuji. Fuji is the king of APSC. I think the makers are taking their final position in this shrinking Market. You have money, you are young and can carry heavy lenses then go FF (Sony-E, Canon-RF, Nikon-Z, L-partners) >> bloody and rivalry... For ASPC, ONLY Fuji. Fuji is the King!!!! Hope Fuji will comes with more specialized cameras with fast frame rates for sports, wildlife shooters... If you want to lower the weight of your bag with quality equipment, you have OMD & Panasonic (But fingers crossed for the future). MF is not for everyone but Fuji is make it more affordable.
