The Canon EOS 3 was the last advanced amateur, professional backup body camera for 35mm film from Canon. The EOS 3 has the capabilities to support a professional photographer and some of the nifty features that amateurs look for. Pairing excellent build quality with a very good autofocus and metering system (excellent for the time), the EOS 3 provides film photographers with any function they could use.
This video series covers the Canon EOS 3 in detail. This video looks at the camera's place in history and covers the overall layout. Video 2 provides a deep dive into camera operation for those learning to use it. Video 3 covers the custom functions and explains what each function does and the situations in which you'd want to use the different functions. These videos, taken together, will give the EOS 3 user all the detail they need on how to operate this camera well.

I have been shooting Canon EOS since 1988 and I finally learned what the “A” on the power switch stands for. “Active” makes way more sense than “Auto” or any of the other terms people have guessed at over the years. Thanks!

My favourite film camera ever, so nice in use and such a reliable and professional tool. Though i have to say, eye control focus always cheated on me (calibration didn't help), so I gave up on using this featureat the end;) But even beside this all functions are working as they should: autofocusing, E-TTL protocols, metering is super precise with very useful modes on par with modern dslrs. Very nice custom function to lrave a film leader after rewinding back the film cassete. And this very loud firm shutter noise, which to my ear sounds so satysfying especially in continuous shooting, as some sort of catwalk or fashion scenes from the old movies.

Thanks for this introduction! Very helpful for those of us just picking up this model. The American name for the EOS-5, mentioned in another comment as the first 35mm with eye control focus, is the A2e.

The motor drive coupling on the bottom is indeed to boost shooting speed, you can attach power drive boosters like the E1 from the EOS-1 or 1N, or the PB-E2. The EOS-5 (not sure about the US name) was the first Canon with eye control (I think Canon makes a distinction between eye control AF and eye control *area* AF, at least my EOS-3 manual claims the camera is the first with eye control area AF). The EOS-3 is a really nice camera, it is like a budget EOS-1v. Which sadly means that the EOS-3 is not cheap on eBay etc.

Hello David, thanks for your informative video. I just recently am interested with EOS 3 as a step up from the manual analog cameras I’ve been using. You said don’t put this camera in a wet situation, however I read somewhere that EOS 3 features a weather sealed body, though not as good as the 1V. It’s a feature that matters to me, as I’m considering between EOS 3 or 1V. Would be glad to hear from you about this.
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 3 года назад
So it does have weather sealing, but at this point those seals are around 20 years old. So would I trust the weather sealing with some dust or a light mist, sure, but not with rain or a sandstorm. The same would hold true of the 1V's weather sealing, or the weather sealing from any camera that's as old as these. It's not solely that the rubber gaskets could shrink or crack over time but use, changes in atmospheric pressure, drops and bumps and and associated camera body flexing, those could all have an effect on how well the weather seals still function today, too.

Hi David, great videos! Thanks for making them! Just subscribed! Do you happen to know if the diopter can be adjusted on this camera? Also, is it ok to use a rocket blower to gently blow out the inside when the lens is off? Thanks again! Rick 😊
@DavidHancock

Hey, Rick, it's been some years since I cold this camera, but IIRC, there's no diopter adjustment on the viewfinder.

Is it difficult to manual focus with the EOS 3 in a wide aperture such as F1.8 with the default focusing screen? I can get this body for a really low price but I only have a manual only Samyang lens.
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 2 года назад
That depends more on the lens. If the lens has a thin focus ring, then yes. If not, then no.

David if someone is interested in the EOS-3 you got to figure that they are pretty advanced in photography. This video is for some kid who just picked up a camera. Please use the camera for about 5 months before deciding to give a review. We all can read.
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 3 года назад
I've had the EOS 3 for about four years. It's a fine, not an exciting, camera. And not everyone picking up a 3 is advanced. The number of people picking up formerly high-end and pro-grade cameras as their first film camera, because the cost now is relatively low, is very high. So to that end, videos like this are very helpful to that audience. If that's not you, then great! I'm glad you're advanced enough in your art not to need to know the ins and outs of the camera with explanations of how each function affects camera use. Very many users of these cameras need to know those points.
