The Canon EOS 3 was the last advanced amateur, professional backup body camera for 35mm film from Canon. The EOS 3 has the capabilities to support a professional photographer and some of the nifty features that amateurs look for. Pairing excellent build quality with a very good autofocus and metering system (excellent for the time), the EOS 3 provides film photographers with any function they could use.
This video series covers the Canon EOS 3 in detail. Video 1 looks at the camera's place in history and covers the overall layout. Video 2 provides a deep dive into camera operation for those learning to use it. Video 3 covers the custom functions and explains what each function does and the situations in which you'd want to use the different functions. These videos, taken together, will give the EOS 3 user all the detail they need on how to operate this camera well.

Hi David, quick point. The button on the left hand side you were pressing for exposure compensation is for flash output compensation not exposure. For exposure compensation press the +/- button near the shutter release and rotate the top dial.

Just picked up this camera! I've been thinking of learning film photography for a while now, and have done a couple of research on what cameras should I get. Decided on Canon because all my gears are Canon. My plan is to use the EOS 3 to get me started with the whole process of film photography, from photographing to developing it, then I could get one of those more vintage-looking cameras with less smart functions. I'm glad I stumble across your 3-part-tutorial, and they are SUPER helpful, detailed, and easy to understand. Thanks for the help, can't wait to take it out and test it!

looks like what you call exposure compensation and do it by pressing a button on the left is a compensation for a flash. simple exposure compensation works by simply turning the large dial without any buttons

Hi David, thank you for the video. Question about the ECF calibrating: on the camera I have, it shows me the rectangle to the right in the eye piece, I look at it and hit the shutter button and that seems to be all that happens. It looks like, in the manual, it's supposed to show more points to look at for calibration. I was wondering what your experience was?
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 3 года назад
For me it was also just the one calibration point. So I'm not sure if the calibration software was changed at some point. I was surprised that the calibration only used the one point for me, though.

Just a FYI for those who is considering buying this camera, the EOS 3 has a very high rate of electronic death for it's main control board, and you might end up having a dub that would kept shutting down unexpectedly. Generally buying a film camera this old has lots of its own risks that I generally would avoid of doing so

Can you use a fully manual aperture lens on this camera? I’m having trouble with the camera reading it, just says 00 and when I set the shutter it takes longer than the speed it says.

Should be able to. What kind of lens are you trying to use and what sitting dropping (PASM) are you using?

Great video! Do you know if there’s anyway for us to update the firmware on our own? I understand that Canon halted services for this camera, but I’m curious to know if any copy of the last firmware update the EOS3 received is out there and if we can update it ourselves at home.
@DavidHancock

Thank you and I think I glanced over that quickly at the very end of this video, but no, there is no way to update the firmware yourself and I don't know of anyone that still does.

Hi David, I accidentally opened the back, and exposed the film, for about a second. I dont know whether or not the entire roll of film rewound in my camera, the digital counter returned to 1. I kept taking pictures like normal. Did i just double expose a bunch of film or did it only rewind partially or am I good? Thanks
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock Год назад
You'll have some photos that are robbed and others that aren't. But you didn't double expose anything since the camera won't have rewound the film. It would just restart the count where you were.

Hi I recently acquired a Canon EOS 3 and have attempted to load the camera with film. However, when I close the back of the camera, nothing happens. I have followed your tutorial and read the instruction manual but still have no luck in the camera registering that there is a roll in. I got the symbol of the circle with a round dot in the middle appearing on the LCD, not blinking though. Any help with this is appreciated.
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 8 месяцев назад
Hmm. It may be that the camera has an issue. My first suggestion is to rule this out would be to make sure that the leader is a bit past the orange index and resting flat. Then if the film doesn't advance when the back closes, try pressing the shutter button to see if that helps. If not, then there may be an issue with the camera.

David can you tell me why my shutter is releasing when I turn the wheel on the top of camera? ( EOS 3 )
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 9 месяцев назад
Hmm. That's a new one on me. My knee-jerk traction is that it's an electronics issue. There's a sensor called Canon Forums and the people who frequent it may have more experience than I with that issue.

It's been years since I sold this camera, so I don't recall exactly, but at minimum, obtaining focus and then switching to manual focus will do that.

I've recently purchased this film second hand in excellent condition. I initially was using the eye focus with success after calibrating. Unfortunately now I have been unable to get an accurate focus with eye-focus and also without it. The lens struggles to find a focus and always ends up a touch short and blurry. I've tried it with multiple lenses to the same effect. Do you know if this is a problem with the camera, the lens mount or focusing settings? I was using the camera fine and loving it, but all of sudden I'm unable to auto focus in all settings and its frustrating. Help!!
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 4 месяца назад
Do you wear glasses? If so, that can cause eye focus not to work.
@crystalwood3800
@crystalwood3800 4 месяца назад
I do wear glasses. I’ll have to try again next time I have contacts in. I thought with the camera in the O mode and not eye control, I would be able to still select the focus using focusing selection points, yet I have the same problem. I can’t get the camera to focus on anything accurately.

Hey there. Thanks for the video! Does anybody have an idea if there is a way to shoot manuel lenses on this camera? I put an old Helios44 on it wich has a manuel aperture ring. So, the camera doesn't know on wich aperture value im operating. Therefore it doesn't let me take proper photos. The aperture value is set to 0.0 ... any idea?
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock Год назад
You can shoot them in aperture priority mode most easily. The camera will take what light the lens provides and pick the best shutter speed.
@JasonLeto

@@DavidHancock Thank's for the fast response. Unfortunately it didn't work. It does this weird thing, where it closes the shutter without releasing it and only if i press the shutter button again it releases the shutter and it's back open. But it doesn't continue the roll or counts it as one exposure. That's only happening with this lens. As soon as i change back to an AF lens it continues working properly.

@JasonLeto
@JasonLeto Год назад
@@Superrul1 With a normal Canon Lens? That's weird. I actually couldn't figure out what's causing this issue yet... but I'm assuming, it's because my lens is modified and dosnt have any metal contacts to transmit information to the camera and therefore doesnt work. I have a nifty fifty as well and that lens works perfectly fine for me.

does anyone know how to get rid of the date stamp on this camera?
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 9 месяцев назад
IIRC, the data is imprinted with a different back than the standard, one I've never used. So you can replace it with a standard back. There will also be some buttons on the date back to adjust it and turn it on and off. Typically with Canon cameras the off looks like some hyphens on the LCD or the LCD will be off. Also, if the date back has its own battery you can just remove that battery from the back.

Hi! Alright? I see your Canon 3 videos and they are very good! I bought one and I'm enjoying it a lot! A fact happened when I was shooting, I was at 8 exposures and the camera made a noise that the film was rewound! What can you be? Information appeared in the lower left corner of the camera's display.
@DavidHancock
@DavidHancock 2 года назад
I had that happen a few times at different points. I think that means either the film was loaded at a slight angle or the film was a little stiff coming out of the cassette. I think that what happens is that a bit of added resistance triggers the auto rewind because the camera thinks the roll has ended.
