"Invest in glass" is the advice given by photographers with the best cameras money can buy.
@timothyrat
@timothyrat 2 года назад
Disagree. They say "invest in glass" because they are professionals and have used both high-end bodies AND lenses. And they truly feel if you are going to invest money into upgrading gear, it's more important to focus on good glass. You can have an R3 but if you are using a cheap lens, you will get crap pics. Plus good glass holds its value.

If you spend $5,000.00 today on a good pro lens, in eight years you will be able to sell it for $4,500.00. Maybe more than you paid for it if inflation has driven up the price of a new one. If you spend $5,000.00 today on a pro camera, in eight years it will be obsolete and you will be lucky to get $1,500.00. And that's assuming normal times, not when they do something funky, like come out with mirrorless! Then your camera REALLY takes a hit! That's language anyone can understand. So, if you need both and have a limited budget, buy a used camera (you can get a heck of a deal on used DSLRS right now, because everyone is trading them in for mirrorless), and spend your real money on glass. Note: In this "unusual" time DSLR glass also took a hit, but not nearly like cameras. Glass is glass, for a long time. I can still use twenty year old DSLR glass on a modern mirrorless camera with an adapter. It's still great glass. But a twenty year old camera is worthless. No one wants a Canon 1d today!! But a first generation Canon 600 f4L?? Heavy beast, but still takes great shots and will work with your R3!

After 6 years doing photography starting with canon sl2 I must say glass matters not the body. Now using a7riii with GM lenses and I’ll say it again I wish I invested in good lenses.

The RP is a brilliant little camera and far better than Jared realises. It has very accurate and competent autofocus, great low light performance and has more customisable buttons than the R6 (where the R6 has a rear dial, the RP has 4 customisable buttons which also act as a joypad).

@Paul Phillipson Yes, RP is a very good camera in terms of image quality and usability but in my opinion it is a bit on the slower side. But that doesn't matter in lots of situations like landscape, portrait, macro, ... And it is light and compact (like maybe Canon AE-1 or similar cameras). If it had cropped 4k with DPAF maybe it has been enough for me but ...: I need a 4k compatible camera to collect video samples (I am dreaming of a documetary movie!) so I stumbled over the R7 and I must say: A very capable package if you need speed, stability of freehand recordings, reliable movie AF + more reach with telephoto lenses. Finally I like both cameras very much and are glad to have access to both tools!

I think when you are testing high-end gear, to tend to be biased in terms of performance and quality. But when I show what I shot with my RP, my friends tend to be impressed because they almost see only smartphone photography nowadays. It's like buying an expensive microphone. Definately the better pick. I had and enjoyed the RP since release, but the R7 made me switch to APS-C back completely again, just a much better value as a hybrid camera. The nice bokeh with the FF sensor is appreciated, too. Thanks for making your choice relevant to you and encouraging us to make our choices based on our needs and purposes. Mostly, though, thanks for promoting investing in good glass. I’ve added an EF 70-300 and an RF 50 with very satisfying results each.

I'd prefer the R10 because one thing to take into account is the high megapixel of the R7 means you need high resolving lenses. Not all EF lenses work well with it. The R10 doesnt have this issue and you dont have to worry about the lens "focus hunting" or getting shots that are not that sharp. The only thing I wish it had was weather sealing. I currently use and love an M50 I and II and have all the EF-M lenses and a bunch of EF lenses so no need to "upgrade" yet but id wait out for Canon to release an R10 with weather sealing. If not the R10 will eventually be my next step especially as a sports photographer

I have an RP and have been buying decent RF glass. I'm looking at moving up to the R6 and keeping the RP as a backup or hopefully having he wife become more interested and using it as a full frame introduction. The RP still takes good photos for what I have used it for and to be fair it will still hold its own against the R10 and R7 in many instances. In my opinion, a natural jump from the RP would be an R6, or even an R5 or R3, if you have the bucks. Great review. Keep them coming.

I think Jared, as a sports photographer, puts way more emphasis on shutter speed and how many frames a camera can shoot per second. If you are shooting things like portraits, landscapes, products and still photography, this really is a non issue, yet he almost belabors the fact that the RP doesn't do that well. Also, you have to take into account all of the drawbacks that come with a crop sensor that you don't have to deal with with a full frame lke crop factor. There's no free lunch.
@GrantMcWilliams
@GrantMcWilliams 2 года назад
All of the drawbacks including the *one* thing? Most of the historic drawbacks eg. low light and dynamic range don't apply to this conversation as the APS-C sensors are a generation newer. As for shutter speed - most of my photos are taken at 5-6 fps. My M6II can do 14 but only if I have a hummingbird outside my window do I kick it up into a faster mode. The RP however, can't even get out of it's own way. My old M6 Mk I could do 9 fps. Hell, my old M10 with contrast detect AF could do 4.6 fps. The RP is mostly unusable unless the subject isn't moving at all. With tracking AF it's FPS is from the early 2000's. I don't know the technical reason why it's so incredibly slow but I hope it wasn't intentional, it really crippled the camera.

When you put the RF-S on an RF Full-frame camera, it should automatically switch to 1.6x crop mode (the same effect is obtained with an adapter for EF-S lenses to RF), this can also be done manually, if you turn off the 1,6x crop mode there will be a vignette.

i completely agree... Tried it with older cheaper EF glasses and i was not really impressed, but even a "cheap" RF 50mm 1.8 is just MUCH MUCH BETTER than my EF 50mm 1.4 ever was for example. Since a while i got a RF 800 F11 and its just awesome, even 4-5 fps are just not that awesome for wildlife, but it works and i can work around this limit with 1080p 60 fps video or even 4k video in manual focus and heavy crop to effective 1800mm (basically just enough vertical space for a 100% frame filling full moon)

@@BlackFlagAdventure Just get rid of the 1.4 as long its working and get for a little payment a new RF 50mm 1.8 STM Its especially on the RP super lightweight, it will feel like a "snapshot camera" way less than 1kg, more like 500g about. The RF 50mm is the lens i love the most on the RP as always on, beside the RF 800 F11 for wildlife. a super compact and lightweight combo for hiking and travelling with less than 2kg! It just happens that i have some macro, zoom and other special lenses for astrophotography as well as 2 telescopes with EF mounted so i have my "creative" lens set with Meike EF RF Filter adapter and additional to Meikes polarizer and ND filter one from breakthrough, the light pollution filter for astrophotography. In EF i can switch lenses whenever, how and how often i want since the filters protect the sensor from dust alltime, with RF lens switching im still careful.

@@BlackFlagAdventure I really loved the 1.4, especially for videos of my reptiles in nearly complete darkness while hunting or for concerts and festivals etc. I got the RF 50mm as the EF 1.4 made AF problems in cold conditions and so i had both to compare directly. The difference is like day and night, the EF 1.4 has just one single positive: a better bokeh and also at smaller apertures it "looks" better since it got more aperture blades. In anything else the RF 1.8 (as well as the EF 1.8 STMs!) is SUPERIOR.... MUCH sharper, barely CA, supports smooth aperture changes for video use.... And especially the RF version feels higher quality than any of canons autofocus 50mm 1.4/1.8 lenses on EF mount before. I would even suggest the thing you HAVE TO BUY with a smaller EOS R camera is a RF 50mm 1.8 (or a 35mm with stabilizer if you can afford)

Coming from a very old 40D, the EOS RP was a huge step up for me. Finally, I could fulfill my dream of stepping up to a fullframe sensor. I really love that image quality, especially for stills or landscapes and low light conditions. I also started taking pictures of some birds in a nearby park - works just fine. But remember, I stepped up from a 14 years old camera :D Why did I upgrade: The autofocus system of my 40D was a little bit "special", it didn't hit that well. Now with those in-sensor dual pixels, the very most shots are now perfectly sharp, even with older lenses! And I got that RP body for less than 800€/US$, which was a awesome deal! But I understand, that if you want to shoot fast moving objects, you may consider buying another camera. Maybe there will be something like an EOS RP II - but that will probably be not be that cheaply available. I would be very happy if the animal eye tracking was being added to the RP - but I think this won't happen. Overall price/perfomance I give that RP a very good 4,5/5*. Just a notch to slow, but the other characteristics are amazing fot its price.

I’m not flush with money, and have to make a lot of decisions based on that. So I’ve spent a long time making do with less. But I have been doing this as a profession and as a hobby for closing in on four decades. I shoot mostly in full manual, and always in raw. So at the very least I have to take umbrage with your assertion that the R10 doesn’t leave any room to move upwards, or is only for someone who isn’t looking to improve their photography as a whole. One of the things that is most attractive about it is the level of customization that you can add to it, and the amount of control you can exert over it. The RP has been a great camera for me, with the ability to be very thoughtful in the way that I approach photos and the way that the camera handles. I plan to add an R10 soon, mainly because I like the difference in features for different uses, and I appreciate the similarities between the two cameras in terms of placement of controls and levels of customizability. I’d love an R5 and R7 as my one-two punch. But the RP and R10 will undoubtedly generate very good results for me. As both are marketed as entry level cameras, I feel safe saying that they both leave a lot of room for upward movement, experimentation, and opportunity to gain experience and skill.

You mustn't know how to get the most out of it, the RP is fantastic in low light. You have to overexpose (keeping an eye on the histogram to not blow out highlights). With Highlight Tone Priority turned on, the highlight recovery is very good.

@@BrettCulverVlogs I hear this claim from R6 users all the time. There's very little difference in ISO noise between all of the R series cameras if you shrink the images down to the 20MP of the R6. The biggest difference between the R6 and say R/RP images shrunk to 20MP is the sharpness of the image. What I hate is right now there is no actual good high MP full frame below R5 pricing. (R6 is for sport) Your choices for a decent full frame mirrorless are the Sony A7R IV, Canon R5, Fuji GFX 50R (Medium format). That's it. The only other realistic options are DSLRs

Unless you need speed or unless video is your main focus, the rp is an amazing camera. And at $900 for the body (what I spent), no camera in that price bracket can come close. the images are gorgeous and you can definitely use it in a studio environment. Add some lights and some quality lenses and you can produce professional results. It's not my primary camera (the r5 does that for me) but I enjoy using it more than my Sony a7r3. The a7r3 is better but in a studio environment I don't need high framrerate and I have lights so I don't need low light performance.

Great video! I have an R5 and 6dm2 with great EF an RF lenses, all of which I love. However, it all gets pretty heavy on long trips trudging through airports, bus terminals, etc. I bought an R10 just for travelling. It was on sale in December for under $800, and it works great with all my old EF-S lenses. It was just too good a deal to pass up. My load has been lightened significantly and I still hope to bring home some great shots.

RP for me, is probably something I will look at because I already have the R10. I shoot landscapes and cityscape, places where FPS doesn't matter and if I need to shoot moving objects I can use my R10. Plus, I have 3 RF lenses which are a bonus. I use Fujifilm as well, so, I haven't totally gone full blown Canon, yet.

Getting the r10 for birding with the 600 f11. The r7 doesn't offer enough benefits to make it worth it for me. Its higher quality 4k 60 is slightly more cropped and its ibis barely works with the f11 lens in particular. It has more resolution though and apparently better low light performance, two SD cards, bigger battery, larger evf, video switch so the custom modes can be used for video, and a circular dial for easier skimming of photos. It weighs .4 pounds more and costs $500 extra.

I'm new to the whole photography game and got into it wanting to shoot wildlife and for jet spotting (i.e. fighter jets). I went with the R10 with the RF-S 18-45mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM kit lens. I then bought a EF 75-300mm F4-5.6 IS USM with a Meke Drop in ND (ND3-ND 500 & drop in clear) filter mount adapter and a Valtrex EF-EOS R Auto Focus Mount EF/EF-S Adapter. I also ponied up for the RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM for it. I literally went to Canon, B&H, and a few other chat rooms to inquire about being able to jet spot and what budget camera they'd recommend. Hands down was the R10 and followed closely by the R8. The R8 was a bit out of my budget range but is something I'll be looking at in the not to distant future.

I would suggest the RF 16 or 24mm if it has to be light and small (but keep in mind... the RF 16 is pretty unsharp and no stabilizer and IBIS alone doesnt do well. The RF 24 is better for this case, but already a bit expensive. I tried the EF-S 17-55 2.8 and its somewhat OKish to use as vlogging and general use lens, but since its a zoom and adapted, its front heavy and by far not as convenient as a short, light RF 16 or 24mm lens. And i would not say the R7 wins completely, especially when you really only mind photography and dont care about speed the RP (or R) is the best deal, especially since you can use so much better full frame (EF) lenses. Also for 1080p video they are pretty good, just too crippled in 4k modes. I mean, i really enjoy the R7 more over the RP, but ONLY because i changed my style completely from basic photography in many ways (wide angle astro/milkyway, astro on a telescope, street, landscape, low light...) to a very wildlife and video centric style so the RP was basically one of the worst fits for this usecases. Otherwise i would still enjoy and love the RP.

@@jbennett3578 Well, it really depends, as a long time APS-C user and using full frame for a while.... especially due the EF/RF mount system full frame is pretty unbeatable on canon so the RP is definately something to consider if not too much video and features/speed interested The R7 is just a compact and universal usable APS-C powerhouse for "little" money. Especially since i looked a bit into the "newer" cameras released like Panny GH6, S5 II, Fuji XH2(S), Sony A7RV etc and just by seeing the body prices and look a bit on the 2nd hand market for lens prices..... oh boy, i am so happy for just being a "loyal" canon user since 2008 about, EF lenses are so many pretty good and affordable, just good APS-C lenses are lacking on EF/RF mount which is one of the bigger "flaws". I dont get why the competition is THAT EXPENSIVE?! GH6 2500$+ for MFT? the S5 II with somewhat limited faster video features, 2000$ but at least a nice full frame (photo centric) camera if you can afford the lenses The Sony A7RV would be somewhat "the best" compromise to get very good video and very good basic higher res photography, but same problem as with panasonic and oly/fuji..... just super expensive lenses if you want something better than average which make most systems a lot more expensive than Canon, as much all hate on canons expensive RF (L) glasses, there are at least good, high quality and fair priced EF alternatives unlike with any other system. I knew this would happen as soon i heard about the RF mount! Canon is slowly killing the EF mount and we are at a nice point to get 2nd hand, latest generation EF glass which costed like 3 years ago a lot more since it was "the best" (and is in some occasions still.... EF 100-400 II L beats in my opinion the RF 100-500L, same for EF 70-200 2.8 III vs RF 70-200 2.8, better and cheaper)

@@harrison00xXx It's all about the tradeoffs, isn't it? I like the idea of full frame, but I also want credible 4K video capability, so the R7 is at the top of my list. So far. Tradeoffs on the body/lens costs too. The R7 body is about as much as I can afford and still have budget left for some decent glass. I hope the selection of native lenses improves, but as you say, there's a lot of secondhand choices too. FYI, if you use an EF-S lens (on the adapter) with an "R" body the camera will recognize it and automatically adjust so it is in "crop mode" and there is no vignetting due to that. I presume that the same is true if you use an RF-S lens on a full frame "R" body. Of course, if the lens itself is known for vignette (especially zoom lenses at the widest focal length) that will still happen.

Possible use case for crop lens on full frame - if you shooting super 35 video where sensor is cropped anyway you can get good crop glass for cheaper than full frame. I don't know if this works in real life. I know Sony automatically picks up that you are shooting a crop lens and many of the cameras have crop modes. A1 is a 21MP crop sensor. A7III was 10MP and A7IV I think is 14MP...
