More like other way around ^^ -> The body coating on the R5 is very "sandpaper alike" (maybe therefor its also rubbing off more easily). I always asked myself why they do not use the old style coatings or some kind of structured coating. One of the points I didn´t like about the R5 as I had it. ^^
@@Deadly_Laser Possibly on super old bodies. I only know the later digital SLRs (500 / 600 seris and 5D variants). And there I never saw such behaviour. Beside: Compare it to side by side to Sony, Panasonic etc. sturctured coating - There are WORLDS inbetween (one of the points why I am back at Sony + Panasonic). ^^
This is a reminder for people who have G.A.S. that you need to have a Mike Drew in your life. Someone who can tell you whether or not a feature or spec actually makes a difference, not because they're curmudgeonly or stingy with their money, but because they use cameras as tools and know how to prioritize function, predictability, and reliability over everything else.
I know you guys get a million comments that tell you what to do and not to do when testing, but please, more interactions with real-life photographers! I love Mike! Very refreshing.
Hey Sigma! Get your lenses on Canon RF just so Mike can have a new 150-600! And for god’s sake Canon Canada - get Mike an R5 II. He’s your best ambassador ever!
I believe the problem with the EVF by looking eye control with a subject is the Eye Color. Light Blue, Green may not work with the camera. Brown Eyes seems to work. I am surprised no one is talking about this. Cheers!
@@PetaPixelmaybe it’s something in your eyes or the actual muscle tissue surrounding your eyes. Side note, it would be funny if this technology ended up leading to ground breaking discoveries for optometrists and caused canon to create ground breaking technology regarding the human eye. lol.
I can appreciate the "old school" comments of the guest. Very informed. I consider myself old school too. But, adapting to reality is also nice, while not required. In reality, you can do the same things differently and achieve better results. I struggle with this daily as a mid-50's guy with a 5 year old. So, I get it (or at least I think I do). I'm just trying to be better than I was yesterday...that's the best I can do. Thanks for the insight re: R5 Mii.
It's not even that. It just feels like it's not moving at first, but it is. It actually comes off real easy, once you push it a bit more forcefully than most are comfortable with.
As someone who has an R5 for photography but only takes pics with the mechanical shutter, i feel like I’m not really missing out on anything not “upgrading”.
I use EFCS on my R5, but partly because electronic shutter drops to 12 bit. Given that the R5.II has full 14 bit RAW even in electronic shutter, I might be tempted to use it.
There are a lot of small improvements, like better focusing, faster FPS, a much brighter viewfinder display, etc. I don't know why people expect a major upgrade to an already very capable camera. And the company's resources are limited when compared to those of Sony. If all the main cameras and lenses were interchangeable, people could mix and match gear that best works for them. Instead, people need to marry, and possibly divorce, a camera + lenses maker.
once you try the AF, I think you'll change your mind. I do a lot of events and weddings on my R5 but some testing with the R5ii shows some big improvements. Think of it as the benefits of the R3 but 45MP.
I’m not exactly sure what reviewers are on about with this hot shoe. I’ve had my r5ii for about a week now and it took me about 5 seconds the first time I tried to figure out how to do it. Now it takes me less than a second each time. You just gotta push the button with your thumb and pull the cover backwards with your pinky or ring finger towards you.
To be honest, that sounds like an exercise in frustration. Then again, I never kept hot shoe covers on any of my cameras, so I'm not one to complain about such things :D
@@yawningmarmot I get you. But it really isn't hard to do once you figure out how you're supposed to do it. You don't even need a ton of force, just the right movement
Great great video ... sure enjoyed Mike Drew being in this video. Be well you all. I've had the R7 since it came out and this R5ii is my planned next camera. Thanx
Now I don't feel quite so bad about how "used" my camera gear looks, although I ended up glueing my 200-600 together after I took a fall with it. No one is going to be able to work on that lens again :). Love the FJ and really hope my vehicle will still be running after 800000 plus km. First review I have seen of a production R5 II and it is good to see everything that I wanted out of it seems to be working well. Still going to wait a few months to see if there are issues that come up around the camera crashing like my R5 did so often. If I don't hear any complaints then my savings may go down and I will finally be able to use my Canon lenses again :)
Biggest downside (for video) is the missing oversampled 4K60. Weird that you can record 8K60 in RAW - But not 4K60 oversampled in a smaller form factor. (Only way would be to record 8K60 at 2600Mbits and downsample the huge files it in post to 4K60.) Lets hope for a firmware update to fix / add that ...
@@mdhazeldine Yeah. The price differences are huge. Also the R6 Mk-II is a strong alternative (and it offers oversampled 4K60). Quite weird. I guess they skipped on it due to the limited recording time (8K60 C-RAW only reached 23 minutes according to Jordans tests - So it would have meant similar or even shorter REC times for oversampled 4K60 due to the higher processing power needed to oversample + save in a way more compressed form factor). Still - Weird to see. Even the R8 offers it ...
@@AustrianGeek I'm betting that the R5C Mark II will have it. (Plus many more cropped RAW and compressed recording options, that aren't available here.)
@@p_adam19 Possibly yeah (coming again with a fan for more constant performance temperature wise). Though: At what price point (reg. the R5C II - The R5 II is already really expensive). Plus: You can get already oversampled 4K60 on the R6 II and the R8 for example. Its ust a weird decision (holding off a ton of video centric shooters). Even if 4K60 "Fine" would be heavily temperature limited - At least to have the option to switch to it is just a must have in 2024. You could still choose "Fine" or "Normal" depending on your rec time requirements ...
Mike is an absolut delight! Your portrait of him was trully great, his humor is fantastic, he really seems like a nice guy and his photos are just gorgeous! Reeally great guy, you need to get him more in the videos (maybe to test the R1???)
love the review of the camera, almost every video I watch about the camera is: should you upgrade from the R5 and why. I still have a 77D from 7 years ago so I think that answers my questions fast XD. Only wish I could afford one now
Easy one of the best PP-videos to date! Thx a lot for this valuable, entertaining and greatly produced review!! The post-credit scene was hilarious :-)
I'm taking my R5 II for its first shoot tomorrow. That hot shoe cover really is a PITA. It requires two hands: one fingertip to depress the button and the other full hand to push it off. And that's with no lens attached. Sheesh. I won't be using that hot shoe too often, I don't think.
It is great to see Mike Drew back with you guys, you three have a great chemistry together and he should be a great guest whenever its time for a Canon review. 🎉
Thank you very much for this episode. These collaboration and exploration type of videos are just great! That Toyota's car kilometers - just wow... Informative and entertaining camera review as always! Definitely, once in the future will choose my new camera with help of your reviews intead my current old one - Nikon 5100 🙂
This camera is obviously better in most ways than the R5, but the dodgy hot shoe cover and the omission of oversampled 4k60 are odd fails. When you consider that used R5s are selling for practically half the price of this camera and still beat it in some respects, it's not the most compelling upgrade, at least until used ones come on the market in a year or three.
Unfortunately, I don't have access to this camera, but somebody posted a video showing that if you squeeze the sides of the cover and press the button, the cover comes off. I've also seen comments about R6 that it was only difficult to remove the cover a few times in the beginning.
It may be that the image processor overheated quickly in the 8k/60 mode or it could not handle it and a new generation is needed. Or maybe an updated C version is coming with this video mode. Unfortunately, companies are very "non-transparent" about their decisions.
Just picked up my R5II and working out the kinks. So far loving it, particularly what seems a much stickier focus. Going to have to get me one of these tire irons for the hot shoe cap though.
Mike's R5 + Sigma 150-600mm deserve an award for enduring the worst of times and circumstances. I just cannot believe that any R5 would ever look like this in just under 4 years! Great guy!
I'm left-eyed and the Eye Control on my R3 is a game changer, but you have to calibrate. I see Mike is left-eyed as well and needed to be a bit more patient. Don't piss on Eye Control, it rocks.
I'll stick to my R6MII. But not due to any failing of this camera. I'm just a recreational photo guy, it's not old, and I have too many expensive hobbies. Thanks for the ultra entertaining review. 😀
I've been so used to using the fuji xt5, I need some practice to hold the r5mii + 70-200 steady! The autofocus is so good it's worth it but so hefty lol. For the eye control I was able to calibrate by holding the camera a little bit away from my eye rather than mashing my eye into the finder.
I don’t understand why so many users have difficulty removing the hot shoe cover. Just use your index finger nail to pull back the button and the cover slides right off!
I have the camera now and getting the hotshoe cover off is no exaggeration! I predict that the plastic pin that is holding it will break off pretty soon if you take it on and off a lot. BTW, on a different note, when the video switched to Jordan the graded C-log2 footage looked great! 👍🏻
Here’s to hoping firmware updates change the complicated video custom white balance, and not being able to access false color when using the gamma assist when filming in log. 2 main gripes so far. The rest of the camera is stellar
Theu are tools, my EF 300 f4 has tons of paint missing where my hand tends to stay and I've considered getting some paint and brushing on a coat of FDE green to make ot really my own but also have considered buying the RF when I move from DSLRs.
Great (and funny) video. I am loving my R5 and the lenses I bought for it. Its an amaing piece of technology. Thank you for the review on the R5 II. Keep up the great work and the comedy you inject into your reviews.
Mmmmm...I am surprised to see your unit can get up to 23 min in 8K 60fps RAW. Is it RAW LT or RAW? In our test in RAW LT, it shut down at 17min and at best 18min - exactly like how Canon advertised. I think with a better air flow it might run longer - but 6 min different is still super huge. Thanks for the video btw great job.
Did he store his R5 in a rock tumbler? How do you wear the paint on the portion under the viewfinder and all the edged around the body yet the top bump and bottom of the camera look fine? I've seen many bodies with paint chips but I've never seen the paint chips be so clean and glossy. Usually the paint chips I've seen on 5d and 1d style bodies look dull and uglier. It almost looks like it was sanded and polished to improve comfort. Not saying this to be mean or disrespectful in anyway, I'm just genuinely confused. Maybe the specific type of gloves he uses causes this type of wear.
All that wear is just from holding it. Also, I use back-button focus so my thumb is always rubbing that area. I don't wear gloves unless it is very cold and my favourite gloves have holes in the thumb and index finger from holding the cameras.
Nice to see you using the Canon RF 800 mm F11 lens on the new Canon R5 Mark II. Just had this lens out yesterday on my R6 Mark II for some wild fowl photography. Also you used the RF 24-105 mm F4 lens - which is an affordable lens. Don't feel too cheap using these RF lenses compared with some of those very expensive RF lenses.
I have no interest in this camera or any canon camera but I will watch any review from the Chris and Jordan (and guests), canon or otherwise. Love learning about different camera brand features and developments from you guys
Oh man, whats going on, last 10 years everyones been growing extremely fast???? Mike looking real old and its not even that long ago since I saw a video with him and you guys.
