Canon EOS R5 - My Thoughts After 8 months of Ownership 

I recently picked up the R5 about a month ago and I came from the Sony A7iii. I'm still very happy with my decision.

I switched from the Sony a7R IV to the R5 and after 3 months am happy with the switch. It's not perfect but for practical purposes for various uses its s great all rounder.

I used the Canon 5D Mark II for many years and the focusing just got to be too unreliable. I would think I had shots in focus and get back with the model to review and find out they were not, in fact, in focus lol. I now have the R5 with the 28-70mm f/2.0. Great system - it's almost too powerful. Very hard to screw up, especially coming from a background where I shot film for many years. (BTW, the RF 50mm f/1.2 is an amazing lens too. I've rented it several times and have not been disappointed.)

I just got the R6 today, and testing it out, its amazing, I was Gona het the R5 but the price was insaneeeeeeee. maybe that will be the next investment!

Watching these styles of videos is so much better than the other generic stuff on youtube. Feel like 90% of the videos they unbox the camera tell you it over heats in 8k but has good lenses then leaves you with some vague messages about the Sony AS73

I've been shooting weddings and travel with it for the past 5 months. My biggest complaint is that high ISO photos are terrible, but that's to be expected with a high megapixel sensor. I also think the shadow recovery, while impresive in quality, makes the images have an extremely digital feel to them and the colors become... meh. The biggest plus side for me is the stabilization, photos are sharp at 1/50 shutter, and the eye auto focus which is incredible.

I've watched a lot of your videos and checked out your personal and professional work on your website, and I am in love with everything I've seen. It seems to me that you've found great tools to help you achieve wondrous results. The Canon R5 is a beast of a camera, and that 28-70 f2 lens is quite intriguing to me. I have been and will likely remain a Sony user, but my hat goes off to Canon for producing such a stellar piece of kit and to you for wielding it as well as you do.

Just bought my R5 and it comes tomorrow! Very excited. I really hope i can disprove your video experience but we shall see! I am a hybrid photo/video guy. Next investment is the 28-70 F2

I use the 28-70 for almost all my video work and the IBIS makes up for the lack of IS in the lens 👍🏼

I picked up my R5 with the rf 28-70 f2 3 days ago, and I was blown away with the quality and the speed of the system!

I’ve had the R5 since launch and I can attest to every he says in this video. It’s an incredible camera, I’ve never had any of the issues with stills or video.

Vintage lenses with the R5 is a really insane combo

Great well rounded review. I have and R5 with a few RF lenses. I love it. I agree it is #1 a still camera and it is at the top of the heap for stills in my book. But, many photographers focus on stills and shoot a good amount of video as well. I am thinking about wildlife. This camera is perfect for that. The best feature is the ability to switch between your favorite still settings and your favorite video instantly with the press of a single button. Love it. I owned an R6 and quickly decided to upgrade to the R5 and I am glad I did.

First up: this video is one of the few videos about the R5 which is actually without any bells and whistles, it's straight forward telling what a professional camera is all about. That being said it's just a tool as you pointed out and that tells me that you are an actual photographer and not just a RU-vidr trying to get clicks. Thanks for being modest, honest and humble. Your work is very similar to what I'm doing for a living and how I use cameras. Coming from Nikon looking into the mirrorless world the options are not as broad as one could think. Having worked with the D850 only the R5 and some Sonys remain. The R5 seems to find the balance between workhorse and ease to use... thanks 🙏

Have the R5 and Just left Fuji so I could afford it, and I would agree the Fuji colors are more pleasing and require less work in post (for me).

I would LOVE to try out the R5 at some point, but I have to say; you mentioning that Fuji’s colors are still way better is reassuring. Still on Panasonic for all my video work, but Fuji all the way for stills 📷🤙🏽

I'm ditching Sony to go with the R5 system, i hope i'll be happy with it!

I’ve had my R6 for about that long and I’m in love

I've owned the RF-28-70mm since July 2019. You're right, there isn't IS in the lens, but when paired with an R5/R6 it achieves up to 8 stops of image stabilization. That is the most stops of stabilization you can get with this system, it even offers more image stabilization than a RF15-35 f/2.8 IS (which is rated at 7 stops) and that lens has internal IS. Trust me, I have both those lenses + an EOS R5. You can notice the stabilization difference between the two (the 28-70 is better). This being said, you really discounted the 28-70 because it doesn't have IS. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

oof , i bought this lens back in March and its still backordered. I cant wait to get it !

I started in mirrorless with Fuji (X-T1 and T2) then I went to the Sony A7iii while that was a good camera it wasn’t great - a much better stills camera than video camera. I ended up going back to Fuji with the X-T4. But the thing holding it back were Fuji’s lenses and lack of 3rd party options. Don’t get me wrong Fuji’s lenses are great photo lenses, but not video lenses. The only good lens for video was their red badged 16-55 f/2.8 - but on crop that was a 24-80ish mm lens and f/4 equivalent - while it worked there were some obvious draw backs. As a result I added the Canon R6 to the kit, and I loved how far Canon has come, but the video options were less than desired… So I added the R5 after Canon released the 1.1 firmware so I never experienced the easy overheating, and thought maybe it was just blown out of proportion because of how much Canon touted the 8k and other high end video specs. But with how I shoot, I never came across the overheating issue. I did sell the X-T4 and added the Fuji x100v to the collection. Tough decision in the future might be whether I go back to crop, and add the GFX - especially with Fuji updating their x-mount lenses for hybrid shooters… or just stick with the R5 for all my professional work, and the x100v as my edc. I guess we’ll see in a few years when Fuji hopefully releases a Fuji GFX with 60ish mp, PDAF, etc. I do love the 100s, but if I wait 3-5 years, I feel Fuji is gonna take a large leap with their medium format!

Do you still own the 28-70? Your thoughts? I returned my RF 50 1.2L and RF 24-70 2.8L to fund it. I love it! I call it "Chunky"!

What kind of computer specs do you need in a laptop with having big files from this camera?

GREAT analysis of this camera…I myself are learning the ins and out of the R5….. It’s also more complicated than the Fuji GFX cameras…. BTW your brunette model is stunning!! Keep up the great videos!

This is the first article which dismissed the use of EF lenses with the adaptor. Other youtubers say there are no issues with EF lenses.

Great review, weve followed the same route, I have a GFX100 which is stunning with results but feels like an unfinished prototype, it cant eye focus in low light so Ive just ordered a R5, Grip and 70-200. I need a standard zoom but will go 24-70 I think, that 28-70 looks so big

I left my Canon DSLR setup for lighter Fujifilm XT series gear. Fujifilm is good but not awesome. Especially for fast moving shots. I now ride my motorcycle a lot and need a fast camera for shooting fast paced action. So I am thinking of biting the bullet and spending my savings on EOS R system.

The talking head camera you are using (C70 I assume) is pretty friggin killer. If you need a better image/color than that... I can't imagine, so clean. I have the C70 and an EOSR that I gonna switch out for an R5 or or R3. Any issues matching the R5 and C70? I know the Clogs don't cross camera that well. Nice work brah.

What do you think of the new Leica SL2? Do you still prefer the R5 as a work camera?

To be honest, a lot of people bought it solely for it's video features, *excluding* 8K, even with Canon's marketing. This sucker can overheat doing not only 4K120 10-bit 4:2:2(not surprising)-- but regular 4K 10-Bit as well, in under half an hour. I get that it's a fullframe sensor, but Canon needs to seriously resolve this(small vents or something?) for the R5 refresh/Mark 2.

20 fps electronic. 12 fps mechanical. Both are blazing fast. On the 28-70 f/2 even though it doesn't have stabilization, on the R5 and R6 the lens achieves the maximum 8 stops rating. Not sure what voodoo magic Canon is performing there, but that is amazing and creates no penalty for the lens not being stabilized.

The Canon R5: a phenomenal stills camera that was marketed horribly as an 8K video camera. I don’t blame ppl for flaming it so hard initially because I have no clue why Canon decided to market/push the 8K video so hard.

I can't stand that photographers don't calibrate their colours with a Colour Checker Passport. Import the profile to Lightroom + set White Balance & you have immaculate colours...

R5 is incredible but heavy things comes with heavy price tags.. Rf lenses, camera body, cf express card. I have to study to complete my highschool and go to university. Then might be I will get it.

What was the GFX 100 lacking that made you want to sell it? Medium format shooters generally are looking for something extra that a full frame can't really do.

It’s not reliable in the video department.. its supposed to be.. most people can’t afford a c70 and an r5.. sony a7siii and sony a1 manages without overheating.. as consumers we should not say its ok.. only then they will fix the issues in the next camera
