Since Tony's a geek, consider the size of virions (viral particles) and then consider the efficacy of wearing a cheap face masks to prevent inhalation. Wearing a mask outdoors (as Chelsea was doing) is especially ineffective. Most surgeons use N95 Respirators though these must be carefully installed and are one-time use applications. Wearing a cotton, paper, or nylon mask might give you a false sense of security, but understand it does not protect you from the virus....

Chelsea, as a fellow R5 owner, I had a problem with the battery life as well. I would turn the camera off overnight and still find it considerably drained the next day. I turned off the GPS and the Wifi, and that cured the problem for me. Now I turn those on when I shoot and off when I am not shooting. I hope this helps.

There are lots of settings which will reduce battery drain. Turn off WiFi and anti-flicker , turn on power saving and eco mode. Turn off viewfinder review and set disp. Performance to smooth may help lagginess. As you say many people praise battery life on R5 and R6 but the way I shoot eats up batteries so I carry several spares. I noticed how slickly you changed lenses. Either turn off IS before power off or wait a few seconds after power off before changing lenses or the IS in your lens may be damaged.
@ryanb8736
@ryanb8736 3 года назад
Main reason I sold the A7III and got the R6 was sensor dust. It was beyond annoying. I barely ever switched lenses and still got dust. Sony needs to fix that huge issue. Have had the Canon R6 for almost 2 months and love it. Will get the R5 when it comes in stock.
@sic04250f
@sic04250f 3 года назад
I don't see how they can. Even if the shutter comes down when you change a lens, there will still be dust rest on the shutter which would likely be redistributed when you're using the camera.. Ryan B Sony‘s mount sealing really has some issues. It even accumulates dust when you don‘t switch lenses. I believe part of the problem is dust that accumulates underneath the support surface of the mount. Blowing out those areas that are covered by the mount with a blower improves the dust issue a lot. But I also think that the mount is just not sealed to the same degree as Nikon’s and Canon‘s.

One thing that doesn't get mentioned very often is that the Sony A7RIV has 26MP in APS-C mode which gives you a 1.5 crop. So if you have a Sony 70-200 with a 2x Teleconverter (as see in the video) you can cover 140mm to 400mm in FF and 210mm to 600mm in APS-C. The R5 has only 17.3MP in APS-C mode.

I barely manages low ISO images with my Sony 600 F6.3. Sunny days are few and far between here in the UK... The size of that Canon 70-200mm is darn good. I am definetly jealous of Canon users having that option

I would love to try the Nikon Z6 or the Canon R6 but as a hobbyiest i cant justify the rental cost or frequent changing of the system. The combo you are using though sounds impressive. If Tony was shooting with the A7R IV to compare with the R5 why was the A7S III used for the video comparison (08:33)? I can't say definitively what the relative battery lives are BUT one of the commonest pieces of advice I've come across with mirrorless cameras is to carry 1 or 2 spare batteries! I had 2 Canon and 2 third party batteries for my 80D which I now carry with my EOS R. With heavy use I tend to go through just over 1 battery per day. I'd certainly rather carry an extra battery or 2 than forever be cleaning the camera sensor or having to remove dust spots in post processing all the time. Interesting to see that 600mm f/11 being so useful for landscapes.

Tony, you should try this procedure to mitigate sensor dust on your Sonys. 1. With a large microfiber cloth wipe down the base of the lens and the camera body around the lens mount. 2. Wrap one end of the microfiber cloth tight around the base of the lens while allowing the rest of the cloth to drape loosely over the camera body. 3. Unhook the mounted lens and slide it out of the ring of cloth. As you slide the lens out from the cloth cinch down to close the hole in the cloth and fold it over to have the cloth draped over the mount hole. 4. Prep your next lens to be mounted. With the cloth over your mount hole you don’t have to rush here. 5. With your new lens prepped for mounting, gently slide the cloth off the body of the camera and mount the new lens. It is important that you slide the cloth away and not lift it off the surface of the body.

Tony after one of my previous posts on one of your channels I tried the Nikon Z7 for three weeks with the 24-70 lens, I also used the adapter with my other Nikon lenses and found that the focus was lagging and not having dedicated buttons like the Nikon D810 that I am used to was so,so. I finally purchased the Nikon D850 and I am very pleased with functionality of it, focus, handling, sturdiness, files, and the feel altogether. I really don't mind the weight of the camera, I feel it is more robust and can take a lot of action. So, yes the Nikon D850 after few years since it came out is still a very good contender indeed.

All these "switching systems" videos are just so tedious to be honest, guys. It's not the camera holding you back, and you know that. You say you do it because you have to review the systems but you present it as a full switch and I think that perpetuates the GAS issues many photographers have. Thinking they have to upgrade their cameras all the time... when travelling and lenses would benefit them way more. Because hey, if you guys do it, it must be the best way, right?

A wind blower is more than enough to remove dust from the Sony sensor. I have always one in my camera bag. It's very cheap and you can use it during the day when changing lenses.

That ability to protect the sensor when switching lens sounds REALLY attractive. For now I carry my A7 II with a Sigma Art 24-70 and my new Z6 II with either a stronger 100-400mm Sigma lens or if I want a wide angle prime.. I have a gorgeous Sigma ART prime... but I’m like you... sensor dust 🥶

I loved the Niantic dock photos, among others, and especially enjoyed Pixel’s cameos. This may sound odd, but shout out to B&H. I’ve shopped with them for decades but never in person and it is fun to see some of the actual people. Finally, I don’t get all the comments about switching systems. One of the main reasons for following this channel is to get Tony and Chelsea’s take on camera gear. It would be a bit limiting to review one body and three lenses over and over again. Plus, many people who are in a position to do so actually do own multiple systems, or change systems periodically. It keeps the industry alive and also provides quality used gear for the pre-owned market.

It’s an illusion the shutter down protects the sensor of dust. But it exposes the shutter blades to be accidentally touched when changing lenses. If that happens, you face a veeeery expensive repair. The shutter blades are the most fragile part of a camera, you may damage them by the touch of a feather. I have the 7RM4 also and never have that dust problems, my solution: carry always a good blower and use it each lens change on sensor and back side of lens.

So far we are finding many of the same conclusions. I have been shooting the A7RIV alongside the R5 for the last few weeks and they are both great with each one having some small advantages over the other. The biggest challenge I have found is the battery life of the R5, mostly because it is a bit unpredictable. One time out and it seems to use a normal amount of energy but the next time I find I'm at one bar really quickly. It does have to do with long lenses and continuous autofocus which is what I normally shoot so I'm going to have to carry around at least 3 batteries for a days work.

Battery is painful, but as a Fuji X-T2, X100V and Ricoh GRII shooter, my entire workflow accounts for charging 3 batteries at once and having them on me at all times! Really, REALLY interested in the R5....

one thing I slightly disliked about my EOS R, is that the top display keeps displaying even when turned off. And the laggyness of the EVF can also be an issue if you are shooting something that's moving quickly, I thought the R5 would be less of an issue since they have 120HZ refresh rate.

People keep griping about everyone jumping systems, but camera makers really do keep making wild improvements with each of these iterations. It's a real arms race right now, not just with megapixels (I'm waiting on the 90MP R5s) but also with dynamic range, auto focus (the new RF Canon lenses are SO fast), face and eye tracking… The autofocus arms race alone is huge. For awhile now Sony far outpaced the others. Then the EOS R got an update. And now the R5 has completely leapfrogged everyone where not only is it faster and more reliable, but it actually nails the IRIS way better. It really is overwhelming that every year or two there is something insanely better on a different system, but it's really a testament to the huge advances that keep being made.

@Tony & Chelsea Northrup RE:Battery life. IF you have WiFi turned on your battery is drained EVEN when the camera is turned off. Might explain why your battery depleted so quickly. I like to have GPS recorded in the image metadata so I had WiFi on so that my phone provides the GPS coordinates. I found my battery was drained the next morning. I searched the internet and found that placing the camera in airplane mode (or just turning WiFi off) there was no battery loss overnight. I did a bird shoot and took nearly 500 photos over a 2 hr period and still had plenty of battery left even with WiFi on. I've complained to Canon that "Off means off" but it seems to fall on deaf ears. This could easily be fixed with a firmware update. BTW I love my R5... but this seems silly. I do understand that WiFi photo transmissions might continue after camera is turned off, but when there is no transmission in progress when the camera is off, the camera should turn off wifi automatically.

Wonder if Chelsea is using Canon's new high capacity battery? Also, wonder if she is shooting with the EV set to power-save? When shooting birds-in-flight with the R5 and my 600mm F4, I shoot with the EV set to "smooth" and I add the Canon grip which provides 2 batteries and better handling. I have been very happy with the battery life of my R5. It has replaced my 1DX2 for BIF and my 5D4 for travel/landscape. Great camera!

Canon is the best of all ! People think AI is amazing, but it actually adds a lot of artificial flavor to the color, lighting and focus of the images, whereas canon gives true natural color tone every single time, this is even more evident when you shoot portraits of people with darker color complexion, where Canon images again feels more natural, realistic and authentic

I like the expertise both of you have and bring into your reviews. I don't like the recent trend of reviewing photo cameras mainly focused on video capabilities. Why don't you make two separate reviews for cameras. One for photo and one for video. Would be way more informative, everybody could select the review matching his own needs and you guys would have more contend. Just something for the future I would like to see. The "switching brand videos" are somewhat fun to watch. But if you don't have a whole vault of cameras and money does matter to you it is nothing more but entertainment and doesn't match the reality of most people. Selling your whole collection of glass and cameras to switch to another brand does cost you a bunch of money for just a little advantage. Always consider that!

It would say the R5 is a bit more finesse compared to the Sony. However, the bottom line is image quality. If they are similar, I don't see a reason to switch, especially when you already have a full line of Sony glasses. R5's IBIS is an advantage if you anticipate doing lots of 1 sec exposures. Otherwise, Sony's ibis with lens IS is adequate for the majority. The R5's short battery life is a bummer, it reminds me of the A7rII days...not going back again (R5 II may be). Regarding dust issues, I have developed techniques to minimize this issue. First, air blow the lens mounts areas before detaching your lens. Next, always have the lens mount facing downward when it's uncovered; be sure the camera is off. Try to change lens in an enclosed environment instead of out in the open. I own both A7III and A7RIII, but I'm not experiencing the dust issues that Tony's been complaining about.

While the battery life of the R5 isn't great, I wouldn't call it terrible. In contrast to a DSLR, it depends almost only on the time the camera is on instead of the number of pictures taken, so you can end up with only a few hundred or even a few thousend. From my experience you get around 3 hours of use (2 with the EVF at 120fps), if you turn of your camera when you arent shooting and/or let it go into standby while you are observing your subject you can usually shoot all day with 2-3 batteries. And while the EFV lag is a thing and I needed some time to get used to it, I still get more good images with the R5 than with my old 5D mark iv.

There are some things that make me wonder.. Do you guys really bring so many huge lenses with you when go on vacations? 😅 It would also be great if you could share some long term experience about sensor dust on the R5 (once you have it). I tested the EOS R for about a month. I found that the R had far less sensor dust than the Nikon Z6 I tested along with it in the beginning. But after using it for a while it also started to get sensor dust to a similar degree as the Z6 (maybe slightly less). I think it’s because dust is still accumulating around the sensor in the mount and starts flying around it from the movement of the shutter. And the air which is trapped inside the mount also contains a certain amount of dust which will start to settle on the sensor once the lens has been attached to it. tl;dr the closing shutter is a nice feature to reduce dust in the short run but you still need to clean the mount regularly to avoid it completely
