I spent less than $50 on the Canon FD 28mm F2.8 which compared to today’s standards is a crazy low price for a wide angle lens. Zeiss, for example, is well-known for making extremely well crafted lenses but they come at a premium price. Brand new, the Zeiss Distagon ZE 28mm F2 is a little over $1000 which is a major difference compared to its FD equivalent. In this comparison, I wanted to see if the price was a realistic assessment of the quality of these lenses.

i found it's funny to listen any concerns about Canon FD's "plastic construction". just take a look - those lenses are already 30 years old an they looks fine. it's a 30-years-proven durability. and compare it with Zeiss. when it's made? 2009-2010? and today they are covered with dimples and scratches.
@daviddn5631
@daviddn5631 3 года назад
one is black plastic, any dents or scratches wont be easily visible because it will always be black. However painted metal will chip and get scratched and reveal the metal below. I own a set FDns and it kind of sucks that the construction is so flimsy. One of mine fell and cracked open.

I love the soft, vintage look of the FD lenses. I found a 50mm, 24mm, and 135mm on ebay. I got them all plus 3 FD to EOS adapters for under 180 bucks.

wasn't problematic the lens performance wide open when putting FD lens into EOS body with adapter? They usually need glass, they're no very clear and good, so I find some trouble on 5D, they look very very soft wide open. Maybe artistic but there is some problem in fact, I can find better solution on mirrorless with vintage lenses (even using the same FD lens on another mirrorless is better) to get retro look but without this fd to eos problems.
@daviddn5631

@@nerdMike yeah, the lens adapter does not help the image, on top of that not all adapters allow for infinity focus.

Just got my FD 28 f2.8 today for $35 used. It's in amazing condition and takes fantastic photos from what I've seen so far. The Zeiss is very nice... but for the price, the FD simply can't be beat.

Did you put any type of lens hood on either lens? Based of my experience with these to lenses I would have guessed you had the Zeiss hooded and the Canon unhooded...

I love vintage lenses and I love zeiss too. They both have their place. But in terms of quality, the zeiss smokes the fd out of the water. The smooth long focus throw, metal build, the contrast and sharpness is consistent across all apertures, and the amount of detail it lets in/how it resolves and image is definitely cleaner. But then again there are times when you want a vintage look. It's all about what you're going for. "You can't drill a hole with a hammer." Just depends. All I can say though is the zeiss will resolve more detail for 4k sensors.

Get a Canon FDn 28mm 2.0 which are better than the 2.8 version. About multicoating, the FDn lenses are much older than the Zeiss ZE, so thats is much of the differenses, but also the lens design, if you had used the Canon FDn 2.0 the result would have been closer.

@Wadidiz
@Wadidiz 4 года назад
FYI, "thr" is not a word, Zeiss is not spelled Zeis (Why not look at the lens for correct spelling?), and what does "pronouned" mean? Seems like you have a lot more work to do before sharing "FYI".

i don't think it's fair to compare an f2.8 lens with an f2 lens since their sweet spots are very likely at different f stops. It's especially weird to compare these two lenses because there *is* actually an f2 version of the 28mm FD lens which is about a hundred bucks more expensive but still affordable compared to the distagon.

You are putting these vintage lenses on M43, which has a very high lp/mm compared to the usual 24MP full frame camera. Also you won't be seeing the corner performance. You make very good videos, but consider getting a full frame.

Using a focal reducer helps to sharpen and improve the image from the FD lenses... but most impart a color cast (albeit easy to correct in post).

The 28mm F2.8 has S.C. not S.S.C coating. You should compare it to the canon fd 28 F2 which is a much better lens then the F2.8. FD not proven to be durable? Haha most lenses are 35+ years old 😁
@thenexthobby
@thenexthobby 5 лет назад
The breech lock FD lenses were the ones with either S.C or S.S.C coating. None of the 2nd generation FD lenses such as the example in the video (bayonet mount) were _labeled_ with S.C nor S.S.C. but they were all S.S.C coated. Canon's "upgrade" lenses for the 2nd ten FD mount were its first L models.

@@thenexthobby The multicoating of the newer FDn lenses are better than both the older FD SS and SSC coatings.

The shot at 2:24 reminds me why I like my FDs so much: they render human faces so nicely! That being said, I wonder if the lighting changed slightly between the two shots, because the sunlight on the Zeiss side seems a little bit harsher.

My opinion is that the adapter of Canon FD needs to be calibrated, because the out of focus. And that's why at f 2.8 it's so bad with sharpness.

You are questioning the long-term durability of a 40-year-old lens that looks brand new? I'm also nearly certain the only thing plastic on the nFD lenses is the block pattern focus barrel grip ring. This whole video just seems like trying to justify the price of the Zeiss lens, but reality is in comparison to the value the FD lens gives the Zeiss is not even in the same universe.
@devtank
@devtank 2 года назад
The metal/plastic argument regarding impact damage and wear, is all wrong. When the EOS 1 came out nobody wanted to touch it because it was "plastic", and the same with the lenses -until of course everyone saw that it could achieve images that nothing else could at the time. The "plastic" used in modern lenses is glass or fiber reinforced resin polymer, which behaves better in extreme temperatures, is minutely flexible and has less damaging impact than dropping that Zeiss. Plus you can realign the broken barrel and get an infield fix with a "plastic" lens that you cannot do with metal, especially soft metals like zinc and magnesium of which all modern lenses are made. No, thanks Ill stick with "plastic". Ask me how I know.

It's a 'meaningless' comparison anyway since the Zeiss is tremendously better than the Canon FD... but the Metabones is high quality and the reduction in IQ is minimal... some would even say that it can improve sharpness.
