Using a custom page size on the Canon G550 lets you make panoramic prints up to 1.2 metre long. Thats almost 4 feet wide.
The G650 is the same printer (but with a scanner), In the US the 650 is the G620 Wireless MegaTank Photo Printer.
Keith uses a photo paper cut from an 8 inch roll, although any custom size can be set with a maximum width of 210mm.
The image is printed via Photoshop for convenience, but any good photo editing software should suffice

Thanks Keith, not just for this presentation, but also the many others, that give newbies like me, the confidence to get some very decent prints from a cost-accessible printer.

Keith, thanks very much for this series on the Canon G550/650/620 printer. I'm using TurboPrint on a Linux (Ubuntu) platform (G620 in US) and it works very well. However, TurboPrint seems to limit the custom page size to 8.5"x26.61". This is plenty for my needs but perhaps this is useful info for somebody. Thanks also for your many test images, I've used them for many years!

You might want to edit the ppd file for the printer - normally I don't publicise such hacks, but if you're using Linux then you have the necessary patience ;-)

Hey Keith please answer this question when you can. I ordered 2 packs of canon photo paper Semi glass 8 x 11 paper of 50 sheets in each pack. Each paper has the canon logo on the back. Do you think that’s fine to use for my shop? Or does all canon 8 x 11 paper come with the canon logo in the back of each paper?
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 2 года назад
I don't know about 8x11 (it's A4 here in UK) but no, only some papers have Canon watermarking. However I'd never personally sell prints with such watermarks. A more serious issue (for some) is that the G550 uses Chromalife100 inks and these are not very archival - once again not something I'd put my name to. However all this depends on your market and business model ;-) With no printer driver and colour management for use on a Mac, this is not a printer I'd consider for the sort of work I do, but YMMV as ever.

@@KeithCooper Also I’m using a Canon pixma pro 200 for the paper I mentioned (Plus Semi Gloss 8 x 10). You said some papers have the water mark, why is that? And even with the watermark do you believe it will effect the quality of the print in anyway? Other than looking a little unprofessional? I’m kind of new to this. Thank you for your time.
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 2 года назад
Ah - I was referring to the G550, The PRO-200 is a much better printer (chromalife 100+ inks - still dye but improved) The watermark is entirely a marketing thing - I don't want Canon (or Epson) branding on my work if someone is going to see it ;-)

The more I see of this printer the more impressed I am with it. Another review confirmed that the Windows driver for the G500 series has the colour intensity/ manual adjustment tick box so full colour management should be the same as my Canon Pro 100S. Looking forward to seeing more of what this printer is capable of. 😊

Hi Keith, thanks for all your videos, you are helping a lot of people. I guess the obvious question is: is there a substantial difference between G650 and ET-8550 in terms of the quality of printed photographs? Does one print better photos than the other, including B&W?
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 2 года назад
Two quite different printers at very different price points - different types of ink-set for example. The G550 does not support proper colour management on a Mac (still testing) which is not so good. Software support differs too. I'll be covering the G550 (B&W) in the main (written) review, but that's a few weeks away - BTW the written reviews are always where I include more detail.

Thank you for your in depth reviews. Do you have a preference regarding reliability, and photo quality between an epson Vs. Cannon ink tank printer in the $400 USD price range? I use Mac, and I consider myself a semi pro photographer
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 2 года назад
Thanks! On the Mac, Epson don't force the use of AirPrint like on the G550, which would (personally) be a showstopper for myself. See my written reviews of the ET-8550 and G550 for more about this aspect. $400? - I'm in the UK, so don't really track prices, especially since I don't sell printers ;-) As to reliability - I don't have printers for long enough for any meaningful info on this. Myself, I'd use neither for prints I'd sell - they are dye inks. However, that depends very much on your market and how you market prints ;-) I look at this side much more in my 'business of photography' videos.

Hi Keith, I was printing an A3+ print using a Canon Pro 300, when , after printing only half the image the printer threw the paper out without finishing the job. This happened a little while ago but I think I read an error message saying the printer had paused. The printer is wirelessly connected, can this cause faults like this? Could there be other reasons? Thanks in advance, Nev.

I've been anxious to try this on my new G620 (US model), but I'm having a hard time getting roll paper in 8" or 8.5" width. Glad it worked out well - now I'm going to try it. Would you guess that Epson Premium Glossy S041742 might work?
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 2 года назад
Do take care with the feed, and flattening the leading edge of the paper. I'd also use a higher quality setting, to slow it down a bit. The paper I'm using here is from a local supplier, and is for 'dry lab' style printers as used in shops for printing 10x8 or 12x8 snaps. Double A4 also works well.

Thanks so much for taking time to reply to this. I know you've said that you use papers available in the UK, so it's nice that you offered some hints. The Epson dry lab papers are readily available here but i doubted that they would work.

HI Keith, really appreciate your review, I bought a G650 after watching it. Really enjoying it, however found an issue with the windows driver I think, I cannot select photo paper longer than 66cm. If you select longer it changes to plain paper. I did a 120cm print but it only let me select plain paper and the print quality is terrible. I've printed dozens of 210x594mm fotospeed panoramics with photo paper settings no problem. Have you come across this issue?
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 2 года назад
I've only Macs here to test kit with, so I've no idea about this one I'm afraid. I'd suggest asking somewhere like the print forum at dpreview.com ? It's the kind of thing that I _might_ try and fix by hacking the .ppd file for the printer - however that's the sort of thing that if you don't know about, it's not something to play around with (I've only done it on Macs to experiment with long prints)

I just checked back and noticed that this was a matte photo paper, printed with one of my 'mac profiles' via airprint, so it looks as if it could have reverted to plain paper and I'd not noticed. The 1000 needs the latest firmware to print at this length. The pro-100 never supported this if I remember correctly (it's an old printer and it's many years since I reviewed it) The pro-200 does (I have videos and written articles covering it) For the PRO-200 and PRO-1000 the process is pretty much identical to what i've done here with the G550

It's the Apple (Mac) system for wirelessly connecting printers without specific drivers. For windows users it's of no relevance, but for Mac users it means that colour management is effectively broken on this sort of printer. I go into this in the actual [written] review

what kind of light do you use when inspecting a print? The prints from the G series printer looks very different in various lightning conditions.
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper Год назад
On my desk is a Graffilite (an ott-lite based lamp). I have a full viewing stand as well, but I don't use much special for most inspections since they are usually looking more at detail. The G series is dye based and the Canon black inks has an uneven spectral response which explains the illuminant metamerism [see the main _written_ review for a full discussion of this] Sorry - it's a feature of the inks...

Prints look a tad warmer then what i see on my monitor. I inspect them with a cheap 5000k light, my monitor is calibrated also to 5000k and there are some small but noticeble differences.Maybe it is just the metamerism playing tricks or I am too perfectionist with a printer that is not intended for professional fine art printing.
