@KeithCooper One thing I would ask though is why there's such a drastic look between the matte print and the photo print? I mean, I've learned through watching dozens of videos online now that both have their own strengths and weaknesses but honestly I'd been led to believe that to print your own artwork, matte was generally better but for me, the photo print print looked so much better. I just figured I'd do one on both and be mulling over which one I preferred for a time but from the off, the photo print looked leagues better 🤔

its amazing to me the minimal amount of coverage over this and the other highend printers out there. must be a really niche market
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 2 года назад
It may be niche, but I'd love a small fraction of a percent of its worth ;-) I've been reviewing such printers for years, so I get to see more coverage, but a lot of it is still very cursory and doesn't go into the sort of detail I'd want before buying/using one...

Keith, I don't have the money to buy the Pro-200, but your voice just keeps bringing me back to your videos man! Might I request some lower-end DSLR reviews or even an Epson 970 vs Epson XP-15000? Or even some more thorough paper-types? I'm an Architectural CAD student, and would love for the opportunity to have some printed copies of some projects in the future. Thanks again for the videos!
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 3 года назад
Thanks! I'm afraid lower end kit is not so likely since I tend to stick to things of use to me as a working photographer. There is a wider range of kit covered in my written articles on the Northlight site, but the next time I do a camera review it's likely to be one that replaces my 50MP Canon 5Ds. There are so many places doing basic camera reviews that I tend only to do the more specialised kit

Hi Keith, I am planning to go with printer for my sticker business. I will also be printing on cardstock and I confirmed that pixma 200 can print on them as well. As I never saw the prints in person, I just want to take your opinion on that. I want to sell stickers with best quality prints and hence, would like to know from you if I can use it for commercial printing of stickers? Please, let me know.
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 9 месяцев назад
I've never come across good quality 'sticker' media - the only ones I've ever tried had issues with the ink not drying properly or rubbing off [this on several different printers]. if you've found such a media then excellent, I've yet to see one. 'Quality' and stickers are perhaps not two words I'd expect to see in the same sentence, but the word quality, is a very flexible one... :-) Also - 'cardstock'? usually when I hear this term it refers to card used for commercial print, and wholly unsuited to inkjet use with normal inks, due to a lack of the necessary coating. In general, none of the desktop printers I've reviewed in the last few years would suffice for what I'd truly consider 'commercial' print. Remember, I'm an architectural photographer by trade, not a commercial printer. Commercial... different media, different inks, different printers

Amazing video! Thank you so much! Question: Is it possible to have only parts of the print come out glossy? I'm asking because we want to use this printer to print our "certificates of authenticity" and want to make it look really professional. Also, for this purpose, would you recommend choosing the pro 200 or 300?
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper Год назад
Thanks Not really, the inks don't work like that. 'look professional' is pure marketing... so... With the 300 - you can claim the certificates are printed on archival media with pigment inks so they will last... All helps with marketing such stuff. If COA's matter then likely so does 'archival' ;-)

@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 11 месяцев назад
No - I'd happily leave it for a week or more. There will be some cleaning but not that much for the 200 The PRO-1000 is much more touchy about cleaning and being left unused.

Print lifetime is a tricky area. It takes time to do the testing and it needs doing under controlled conditions. The only info I've seen is from Canon, but that's obviously part of their marketing. Have a look at Canon's info at www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/explore/printing-innovations/chromalife/chromalife-100-plus?cm_sp=pi-_-chromalife-_-chromalife-100-plus` Another good place for background on this is at wilhelm-research.com

Thanks again for your amazing videos! :D
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 2 года назад
Thanks - The two are very much aimed at different markets. The 200 is an out and out photo printer. The xp-15000 much more general purpose (although the PRO-200 prints documents etc, it doesn't have paper trays and the like) As to price, I can't help. It varies round the world so much I never really keep track of it for printers. I tend to look at higher end printers much more than the general purpose (cheaper) ones.

Thank you very much for taking the time to review this product. I'm an amateur who feels it's time to move on from my basic ink jet desktop printer to something a bit more advanced. What is 'procreate' running on? If it's a tablet then transferring the image to a computer first makes the printing process vastly more reliable and predictable. See my main [written] PRO-200 review for more info and paper choices www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-pro-200-printer-review/ Also... "gee clay" ? Do you mean Giclee? That is I'm afraid a nebulous marketing term at best :-) - it has no actual meaning with respect to printing these days :-) Prints from a PRO-200 are as much 'Giclee' as any other - it's the sort of thing I see as an excuse by people doing printing to charge you 75% more fr the print - pure marketing hokum :-) For sales purposes I'd prefer pigment ink if I was going to slap a 'Giclee' label on it, so a PRO-300 would be a better choice [B&W performance is better] www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-pro-300-printer-review/

@@armeniocavaco It is important, but is something that is very difficult to test. That means it is based on guesswork and other people's anecdotal evidence. Canon/Epson make no reference to this at all (for a variety of reasons), so whilst I'm happy to give my personal views, it's not backed up by testing. Remember that I get new printers sent for a while, test them a lot and then they go back. This makes it difficult for me to estimate ink use as well as what happens if you leave a printer unused for a month. Essentially, the bigger the printer, the more often it needs using ;-)

I'm trying to decide between the Canon Pro 200 and the Canon Pixma IP8720. I've seen mixed reviews on both so I'm so confused. I am an artist who just wants to print note cards, greeting cards, and possibly giclée prints. I need the printer to print excellent quality on these types of non-Canon photo paper. Will either of these do that? If so, which would be best for me, in your opinion. I don't imagine I'll even sell a lot, so I'm not sure the $600 price on the Pro 200 would be the best choice, but some people have said the IP8720 doesn't print well on non-Canon papers. I am willing to pay the $600 if this is the printer I need. I just want to get what I need and not regret my choice.
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 3 года назад
Note cards and greeting cards will only print well on paper/card made for inkjet (mostly single sided) See my articles and videos about printing cards. It is nothing to do with 'non-canon' papers - it's more about paper that is specific for inkjet. The 8270 is not a printer I've ever seen, I don't really look at office type printers very often but the Epson XP-15000 is worth a look as well. BTW Giclee is just marketing speak for an inkjet print - not a term I'd ever use other than to up my prices ;-)

Colour management is the key... Laptop screens are unpredictable, even when calibrated. It also depends on the software in use as well. See the use of the Canon print software in the actual review for more. www.northlight-images.co.uk/canon-pro-200-printer-review/ However, do remember that my expertise is in colour management for accurate photographic printing, not graphics.

Keith quick question? When you calibrate monitor it creates a profile do you use this as an ICC ?
@KeithCooper

The monitor profile is an ICC display profile and calibration. This is used by the system and editing software. It has no normal use in printing whatsoever. It's something you never need look at or do anything with.

Great review, thank you. Would this printer be suitable for occassion card printing (300gsm) where thin lines and small text need to be crisp and sharp? My laser printer broke down and I am now looking to buy an inkjet. I'd appreciate your advice! Thank you
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 3 года назад
It is good for handling the card, but (and it's an important but) you have to make sure that the card is coated for inkjet printing. Using the highest print quality setting, and making sure the original image is at high resolution (600ppi) will all help. Lasers are still the best for ultra fine detail, but with care, and suitable media, inkjets can do quite well. Do check my articles and videos for info on printing cards - they use the pro-300, which in this respect is similar.

@@KeithCooper Thank you so much for your reply, I appreciate it. As the prixm pro 200s is not available anywhere in the UK, I am now thinking of getting the pro-300. As for the card, I recently purchased almost a 1000 sheets of uncoated 250gsm card which is slightly textured. I used to use it with my (now broken) laser printer and I wonder if it will work with the inkjet pro-300. Would you say that these printers work quite well with various uncoated papers? I realise it would be best to only buy the canon fine art textured papers but since I already have a 1000 sheets of that other paper and no way of testing it on an inkjet, I wonder what's the likelyhood that it will work. Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate your expert advice! Daria

@@darmakiel Uncoated stock is somewhat more likely to show problems with the dye inks of the 200. However it is unlikely to give crisp results with any inkjet printer. Whilst I don't know for certain (card varies a lot) I'd not particularly expect good results for fine detail. The problem is that drops of liquid ink spread out on uncoated stock. Thanks - it's most likely a colour management issue - you need to be printing with the correct ICC profiles for the paper. This also depends on what software you're printing from and how colour management is addressed in your workflow. Hi Keith, I've been following your fantastic videos for a few years now, and now finally have bought this Canon Pro 200. I will use it to print art prints and note cards mostly. I have a big question for you! Every time I use any "Matte Photo Paper" as a paper type it won't let me print at A4! It will if I choose "Cardstock". The notice it gives is paper size are not set correctly, it says selected media type (Matte Photo Paper) needs to be set to a paper size with wide margins. If I cancel "safety margin regulation" and select Matte Photo Paper, it works, but I shouldn't have to do this correct? Sometimes it tells me I should change setting to 11x17 (margin 25) or A4 (margin 25) but then if I select it still won't work. Can you please shed light if you know anything about this? Does it have something to do with using ICC profiles? ( I haven't used yet because the paper doesn't have any, and I'm a total newby to all this!). I hope you have some ideas, I'm so frustrated with my new printer!

Both Canon and Epson tell me that the supply variability round the world will continue for a while... Hope one turns up for you soon!

I have this printer. I absolutely hate it. It’s always something with this printer. You need to have just the right amount of paper in it or it says it’s out of paper. Too much or too little and you’re gonna get the out-of-paper notice. And it burns ink like it’s going out of style. The ink boxes are $105 a pack and the printer is constantly asking for them to be replaced. Also, if the printer says it’s low on ink, you better replace it or it’s gonna mess up your print job. If you’ve got a lot of free time and like playing with your printer more than you like to print, this is the printer for you.

I appreciate that, but have to say that your views are in the minority of those I've heard about it. It's definitely a single sheet printer at its best. It's the cartridge size that makes many look at the Epson ET-8550 tank printer instead. If ink costs are a significant issue, other options will work out cheaper

The worst decision in buying a printer last december 2023 was to buy this printer, not just becasue its imposible to print in a 8x5.5" format, but because the half of the time this printer doesnt print because... i can't find inks for it. First the bk, then the pm, then the y, this printer has been more time off than printing. And the worst part its that the cartridges are EXPENSIVE, VERY EXPENSIVE. Finally i bought a Epson L8050 ecotank and for the price of one Canon of 12.6 ml i can buy a bottle of 70 ml!! One Canon cartridge last no more than 7 days compared with the Epson that last ONE MONTH!! I'm not questoning the quality, I prefer the Canon BUT when no inks available for months and the incredibly high price, THANK YOU BUT NO THANK YOU!

Fair enough - that specific paper size is supported by few printers as standard. A custom size may be needed and that's always with a border.

Pros: Lightest weight 'tabloid' sized printer (that I have been able to find) [update] : I was wrong (it happens). Epson Expression Photo HD XP-15000 is only 8.5 KG (19 pounds) Cons: DVD/CD printing useless waste, Canon's Linux support sucks (you have to purchase a Windows computer to use a Canon printer)

Both valid, but still niche features I would not necessarily include in a general review.
