This looks like some tech from the 90s and I’m here for it haha. Don’t know if I would use this or not but the general idea of reimagining the ergonomics of a camera is something I think all manufacturers should look into.
Very true. I really think the camera industry needs to start getting creative and exactly as you say start playing around with and experimenting with the form factors of cameras.
I really don't why Canon didn't realize yet their potential for the webcam market. This camera could be a great contender for one of the best webcams available in terms of image quality, to say the least. At least from what I can see from your review. However, the price is a bit too high it seems.
@@Simsationxl I would love to see a side by side on image quality since the insta 360 is a half inch censor and the canon is a one inch... Both seem great.
@@truthseeker6804 it's been proven time and time again that 1" sensor is no match for computational videography/photography. Sony/Canon can continue on the path of delusion.
As someone who LOVED the Blogging Cameras of the mid-late 2000s (when my phone could just shoot thumbnailsized micro-videos at abysmal quality) i am HAPPY to see the return of these dedicated little pocket cameras. Smartphones might be nice to shoot videos with but most of them simply don't keep standards when it comes to framerates. Yes, holding it vertical but shooting horizontal is exactly what you DON'T get from Phones... This is why we got this insane epidemic of Vertical Video Syndrome. That was something blogger cameras, like the Flip Mino or the Sony Bloggie cameras, always did right. But my god... over 500 bucks for this thing? Are they serious?????
I don't know, but in an era when action cameras have perfect stabilization and shoot video in 10bit it have no sense. And smartphones have great video, wide angle and macro lenses, even apps that allow you to record RAW DNG video. I think the vlogging sector is full of better alternatives, more rugged (action cameras), with more possibilities (smartphones), and better video quality.
@@onlysublime Oh exactly. And I actually still can't conceptualize how the back camera works on a phone. Do you flip it, but then how do you take a picture? I know that sounds really silly but my phone is an iPhone SE so maybe I need something higher tech?
The image quality seems pretty lacking imo. At times looks decent and others it's quite poor. Not just talking about this review but looking at other channels who reviewed it. I think the idea behind the camera is extremely smart but it's lacking overall. 1" sensor is not the issue as high end video cameras with 1" sensor shoot 10 bit 4k 60FPS at 410 Mb/s and the quality is great. They gotta figure out how to get the image quality up on these things. Lets be serious.....a Gopro from last year that is cheaper does 10bit 5.3k 60fps
I was hoping to get an idea of how it performed in low lighting situations, having a 2.8 aperture. Besides that, I like the concept by Canon. Great video 👍🏾
3 votes against it: Slow and unstabilized lens, no aperture and shutter priority mode for Video and built-in battery. The 19 mm (Video) lens is only a plus in case of stationery use. In enhanced digital image stabilization mode, the resulting viewing angle of approx. 28 mm is underwhelming. I'm using the EOS-R, but Sony's ZV-1 with bluetooth grip are my first choice in the arena. Of course I was prepared to pay a higher price.
This is surprisingly alright. Would’ve been a special bonus if the stills mode had even a basic c-raw w/ jpeg option. Overall, it’s actually a tempting little device.
Yeah, even my seven year-old GoPro Hero 5 has interchangeable batteries. Initially the V10 seemed interesting to me because its larger 1" sensor would do a better job of working in low light conditions over the GoPro. But now that I know batteries can't be swapped and the battery life is short to boot, plus the reports of flaky autofocus I've been coming across, I'm hesitant to buy one. Maybe the next iteration will fix these issues.
Ive been thinking about making some shorts for social media, and theres just something about filming with gear other than my phone that makes the idea that much more exciting. Its probably just my desire to acquire more gadgets lol. Anyway great run down, i think you sold me on the V10!
I think as a former ZV-1 owner this makes sense actually. The ZV1 was really only usable in my opinion for video, stills provided no advantage over a smartphone. This form factor from Canon is a better design for video-centric use and it’s features and price match a lot of what is in the ZV-1F. As an R6 II owner I could definitely see adding this to my kit in certain situations.
@@cameralabs - 120p HD compared to 60p - F2 T* coating Zeiss lens compared to F2.8 Lens - 3" LCD 920k dot compared to 2" 460k - hot shoe, wind muffler included. - 16fps photography, 32000 shutter speed compared to 4000, 12800 ISO in movie compared to 6400. Yes might seems minor things. But the only pro of the v10 is ND filter which I'm not sure what's the use of it for that sensor size and not so bright lens. Maybe there is no diaphragm in there. Anyway they both are the most handicapped cameras of our times. But this Canon one really looks like a toy for kids! Doesn't seem to be so comfortable to child either.
Thanks Gordon. I just don't see why I would get this camera 📸 instead of just using my mobile 📱? I assume it has only standard profiles without clog. Looks like canon repackaged old sensor in new product.
I’m loving this concept camera, I always use my phone for quick video taking even tho I have cameras like g7x and fuji, I love that this is small and have a stand built in🤯
I don't think it's better than the G7X cameras. But I like Canon are trying new designs. Better audio with the 2 big internal microphones. V10 has F2.8 lens, too dark especially with a 1" type sensor. Where G7X Mk3 has F1.8 lens and 1" sensor, better in low light. Would have been good to see different lighting test shots. Good hands on review.
Odd comparison, the G7X III is not a dedicated vlogging camera, it's an all-around point-and-shoot camera, which is also very good for still photography, a task for which the V10 is utterly unsuitable. The V10 ought to be compared to a current quality mobile phone and the question to ask is why buy this toy-like device if you already own a good smartphone?
Love this. Just what I’m looking for. The built in stand. I’m into small cameras where I can carry around just in case I find something interesting to vlog about. I currently use the dji osmo pocket and doing make shift tripod for my sit-down vlogs so yes, this is definitely what i need. Awesome review!
Gordon, the screen appears painfully small. and very very fiddly. Amazing concept but Canon MUST design some different user interfaces for different screen sizes. Better still, give the option to tailor..They are draining every last INCH of that ole sensor aye..
Thank you. Great job Canon. I think small m43 cam like em10 or GX85 with small bright prime (12/2 or 14/2.5) might be better in IQ, IBIS, and everything except weight/size.
I really like the ergonomics of the camera and some of the features, but the lack of robust build quality, inability to swap batteries, and the just ok stabilization makes me still think a modern Action camera is more use able for a grab and go style vlogging setup.
Interesting artifacts around the edges of focus areas in the stabilized footage. Specifically around the edges of your body, where it transitions to a background farther away. I wonder if it’s a product of RU-vid’s compression, the compression from editing, or something else? Either way, it’s quite distracting, even on a small phone screen, and I wonder if that will be a permanent shortcoming?
Digital stabilisation always has some odd arefacts, especially when you wobble as much as I do. Plus without any picture profiles, you're having to rely entirely on the default image processing here. But it is a beta, so maybe it'll change.
This is really cool, but would I use this rather than the latest iPhone in my pocket. Don't think I would. Is there really a market for these? That said, excellent review, Gordon. Thank you.
@@cameralabs lol seriously though I got $5000 in B&H gift cards. And I own a Canon 6D. I been buying gift cards to myself as a way of saving, when money is in my bank account it always seems to disappear into other stuff 😂 Anyways I am forgoing all this new stuff and planning on: 1) Used A7R4A 2) Sigma 150-600 3) Samyang 135 1.8 4) Viltrox 16mm 1.8 5) MC 11 for my exisiting Canon EF 85mm 1.8, 50mm 1.4, 28mm 1.8 6) Filter Holder 7) NDs and Grad 8) External Monitor sub $200
This reminds me a lot of those Sony Bloggies that were released in the late 2000s. Weirdly though I think this makes a lot more sense now than they did then.
I truly enjoyed how informative and clear you are. Mostly the quick comparisons you do "with and without" when explaining a feature. Questions how is the ease of use when editing using this Canon V10, are there any comments on editing features? Thanks ! USA
Just looking into this camera as I was intrigued by the size and form factor. But on the canon website it says that the effective photo resolution was 15.2MP, and back calculating the crop factor from the 19mm equiv and 6.6mm actual focal length makes the crop 2.88, vs the normal 2.7 for a 1 inch…so it looks like it’s not using the whole sensor like the Sony rx0 I and II. A bit disingenuous for canon to keep claiming it’s large 1 inch sensor when it’s not using it all.
I'm sure there are certainly some things going on that we need to find out! BUT when calculating, bear in mind 18mm is the equivalent focal length for the full 3:2 shaped diagonal. The quoted 19mm is when cropped to 16:9 for video. It's confusing!
Best review from the best photography channel! How bright is the screen in sunny weather? About half, one quarter, or one eigth as bright as an iPhone?
no zoom... internal battery... killers for me. bummer. Please try to carry a microfiber towel to clean the lens glass before your shots.. it was driving me crazy.
It drove me crazy too. believe it or not, it's not visible when filming, but only when playing back the high res video files. Same for very small dust particles, you can barely see them when filming.
@@amlivinginhell it really all depends on how much you want to spend. If your just dipping your toes in to the world of action cameras, then go with these, xtu-s3 pro ($119), Akaso Brave 7 ($169) or SJcam sj10 ($200) dual screen all are great for their price, so much so, I have all three myself. Then if you want to step up the DJI Action 3 ($329) or the Go Pro 9 ($249). all the prices I showed, are the brand new prices, you can find them used. All these choices are far better then the Cannon and can do much more, you wont be limited to weather, place or anything.
Shooting without a tripod is ok in a studio. There are many places you don't have a table handy so a tripod would be needed. Having a still lens makes the camera lighter but in some situations being able to zoom in would be niece. Interesting device.
wow, only 1hr of filming? that's not good. Hopefully there's a way to mount an external battery and power it via USB-C. But that will certainly add size and weight.
Brilliant, good to see the camera manufactures trying new things again. My Grandson is going to love this when he sees it. Certainly a fabulous alternative to the hybrid camera he's using at the moment 👍
A vlogging camera without IBIS or lens OIS, without 4k60 and 240fps, without phase detect AF, without object tracking, without a replaceable battery - you better like the nice Canon colors a lot.
Thank you for such a nice review. The camera seems to be perfect for vlogging with such a small design and such a big sensor. But as I could see in other video samples, the stabilization is not that great while walking. And digital IS makes walking in the evening looks like glitches all the time. Why no optical IS? Sony X3000 was killing it with it. This v10 camera doesn't have HDR mode and has a small unreplaceable battery... How can it beat mobile phones like iphone 14 or Samsung 23 Ultra? I think good points to this camera are a form factor, mic input, cool streaming options, wide angle lens and price. The big sensor without proper software don't do much in low-light conditions. Unfortunately! Maybe some issues will be fixed with a new firmware update. But I guess I'll wait for V20.
Great review thanks. Refreshingly to the point unlike many youtube reviews that detour into superfluous commentary. A couple of points for future perhaps: some evaluation of low-light capability (at f 2.8 I assume it should be OK) - is this affected by stabilization modes and what is auto focus like in low light.
Great review, Gordon. This seems an odd design choice for canon. I’m not impressed by the image quality, stabilization, or mic. The microphones produce a sound reminiscent of nails on a chalkboard. Rolling shutter seems quite prevalent, but I suppose at this price, whaddya gonna do? Except, at this price, it directly competes with action cameras which have far superior image quality (from the early reviews at least) and stabilization. The body build looks archaic in contrast with action cameras. That stand is atrocious. I don’t know about this one. I thought Sony’s wildly overpriced ZV-E1 was a bad move, but this one is right up there. This, of course, is just my humble opinion.
I thought the stand was the best part! I agree, hit and miss in many respects, so quite a polarising product. But if it hits for you, like for my desk overview, it can be pretty good.
Compare with price the quality is look better than ZV1F in term of colour of his skin tone , dynamic range and stabilization. And iphone 14 can buy two of this camera.
Just a little something I noticed. It's Ok (although it doesn't look to me) if the lens contains fingerprint when not in use, but based on the sudden loss of contrast in the scene against the sun, I can tell that either the fingerprint was still there or the lens was not properly cleaned. Other than that, very good.
Up until today I had planned to get the Sony ZV-1F. However, this is an even more compact option. Now I want this. Excellent review as always Gordon! Also, nice shelves with some dream Micros ( as said in the UK ).
You're the first to mention my vintage collection! I thought more people would! PS - watch out for the Sony announcement next week, they've teased a vlogging camera.
can you answer this question? I know that the orientation of the camera determines the orientation of the video (vertical records a landscape video and horizontal records a vertical video). my question is if you rotate the camera while recording. does it keep the initial orientation? that would be nice as you could record a landscape-oriented video and do some nifty motions of the camera while not changing the video perspective.
But what would you change to make it better for the intended purpose? I agree it looks a bit old fashioned, but it works perfectly for one-handed vlogging and stand-based filming.
@@cameralabsNot having felt the camera I can’t speak to its build quality, but aesthetically it looks like a Motorola flip phone from the early nineties. All the gaps around the parts when it’s folded, the huge grippy bumps by the buttons, and OMG those screen bezels! Functionality-wise it may have a fine set of features, but aesthetically it is not going to appeal to much of the target audience who want to be seen carrying a hip bit of electronic jewelry. Not this clunky mess. I’m generalizing, and of course and you won’t see it on screen, but I still say they could have done a much better job with the industrial design. I think that is what the original commenter may have been alluding to.
i think it would have made more sense to have the record button in the back cause it's easier to press one button without looking.... and the front have all the controls currently seen on the back... cause you want to see how you look with the changes and not have to keep flipping and change and look at yourself again over and over until you get it right... makes sense ?
Excellent review, not into vlogging, but the simplicity is intriguing. Reminds me of the pocket camcorders of the 2010s. With a flippy screen Sony made the vlogger way back. Give credit to Canon. breaking the mold of vlogging cameras
I think I see this as part of my cellphone budget. As far as phones go, I have a 5G Sony Xperia 10 iii, and I won't actually need a new phone for probably 5 - 10 years. I have already excluded 6G as a superfluous technology. So if I pick up a V10 (or something like it) in the next few years, that becomes an "enhancement" for my overall photographic capabilities with minimal economic impact. It can fit. . . .
I think they might in one of the kits. The strange part is they went to a third party to make them. I suspect the V10 wasn't originally designed for outdoor / handheld use
I'd like to be able to pair a headset using its Bluetooth. Should be good for up to ten metres, heaps for cooking in the kitchen or making sawdust in the shed or turning the gravel in the garden.
@@cameralabs I'd be happy to use Bluetooth headset or buds from my local supermarket. They would never produce the echo I hear when people use very expensive microphones in a studio that lacks sound deadening, that's most of them. I don't need high fidelity sound, the sound is not the point of any video work I might do.
I hope Fuji makes camera like this and can print directly to instax printer too, it would be perfect for me since I love instax film photos.. I like this concept camera…with this camera I might use my phone lesser for quick moment taking and I won’t be worrying about tripod stand anymore too 😊
I think this product has a few too many compromises. But.....I commend Canon for trying new things. I think the camera industry as a whole needs to start playing with the form factors of cameras.
this is neat. With the amount of people making vertical video it would have been cool if they had a rotate-able lens and sensor housing to switch from horizontal to vertical shooting right from the front of the camera. but it would probably be a few more dollars than the prices quoted.
Did you forget to have some sample test of still picture? I really love to see the actual files of still picture from V10? Could you upload some of it please?
