Welcome to Part 2 of the Canon Project, a series of videos related to our time using the Canon EOS R. In Part 2 we showcase a workshop and shoot we did in Helen, Georgia in conjunction with an event we were doing for PPA (Professional Photographers of America) for their Georgia Chapter (GPPA).

The location for this video was the Bus Graveyard which is a REALLY cool place to shoot. This was Day 3 of our 4 day workshop that I was teaching for the PPA members and on this day the group asked me to demonstrate a shoot from start to finish as well as give them a heads up on how I recorded my RU-vid videos.
So, that’s what my Assistant/Muse Emily and I did! You can follow her on Instagram at em.explores
For this shoot we used the Canon EOS R with the RF 28-70mm lens. A lens that quickly found it’s way into my creative heart. It’s one of my favorite lenses on the planet at this point.
But we just didn’t shoot in a cool location with a great model and a new camera/lens. We also wanted to illustrate the difference that using flash can make when shooting in conditions that aren’t ideal for lighting. There is nothing better than the best natural light. But that' only exists for about 1 hour a day. And that’s only if it happens to be facing the direction that you want to shoot.
So sometimes you need to have the ability to ADD light to your scenes to be able to capture what you or your clients want or need to create. Sometimes we don’t have the luxury of picking the time when we shoot. Sometimes we have to make our own light.
For this shoot I have to say the Canon EOS R did exceptionally well. Focus wasn’t as fast as I’m used to with my Sony cameras, but for a portrait session like this one it was more than fine. The color rendering and effect on skin tones is really nice.
And that LENS. WOW, the RF 28-70mm f/2 is just a pleasure to shoot. There will be people who complain about it’s size and weight. But for me if you want awesome results you shoot awesome glass. And that’s one thing that Canon has done right with their mirrorless system. They are bringing out ultra professional, high grade glass. Far better than the offerings made by the Nikon Z system and far better than what Sony brought out when it first rolled out it’s mirrorless cameras.
The Canon also did much better shooting flash than the Nikon Z. It didn’t require me to do anything special to shoot in HSS (High Speed Sync) mode which was great since all of these images were taken in HSS with the exception of the natural light shot.
I truly hope you enjoy the content. If you missed Part 1 of the Canon Project which is a Natural Light Shoot done in Death Valley using the RF 24-105mm lens, you can check it out now by clicking below:

Flat isn't always bad, it just depend on how you edit and your workflow. SOC flash is better, but with a flat image you can do so much more post processing, similar to how many shoot flat images in videos.

Jason, i've been in a bit of a rut since my last semester of school is coming to an end, watching the last two Canon videos you;ve done has rekindled my want to go out and shoot. I am a canon shooter and have both the R and 5D mkIV. i agree with you on the fact that the buffer is just too small, although that has caused me to be a little more selective with pressing that trigger. cant wait to get out there and make great images, Thanks for the inspo and the great tips as always!!! - Paul from Canada :)

Another great video. I do believe that good photos can be had from most modern cameras be it dslr or mirrorless. I have seen images which are stunning taken with Nikon D90, canon 550D and other older low end models. Normally it is the glass that gives you the sharp images and Jason's approach to light should help over come dynamic range issues in lower end camera.

I feel that most photographers shoot natural light because they either don’t have the money to purchase good lighting gear, or they just don’t like carrying lighting equipment around for their shoot depending on where they are shooting at. So most natural light photographers just increase the color details in post production. It’s time consuming but you can bring color back in natural lighting shots (unlike using lighting equipment where to can capture the background details in camera). Each is own. 📸 As long as art is being created. 😄💯

I have a 9x7 size small ish softbox I can use while it's on camera, or off, but much smaller than the normal size diffusers. It's GN is 45....up to 148 at 105mm (Which could be wrong, B&H Photo says this...Sony says 45 at 105mm so not sure where 148 comes from). I love the message you had in this video about story telling

I’m about to get a Sony A7R II, but I also want the Canon EOS R. As of now, I use Canon for wildlife, and I’m getting the Sony for landscape- and street photography. If Canon releases a mirrorless with higher resolution, I’m in.
@marioslrzn
@marioslrzn 5 лет назад
Carbon 6 I heard Canon is coming out with a 70mb eos R, that’s over kill for sure but I know people want it. So far happy with the eos r. It does more than what i need but I like the ease of use and ergonomics
@carbon6372
@carbon6372 5 лет назад
marioslrzn The ergonomics, colors and lenses are very tempting, but I don’t want to pay that much more for worse quality. The combination above gives better quality for my work of still photography. Even the RF 24-105mm can create fantastic sharpness when used correctly. If I take the same picture with the same camera with the RF 24-105mm and a very sharp prime lens, could be the Sigma 50mm Art, most people probably couldn’t tell the difference in sharpness when used correctly, posted on the internet or printed. But if I printed very large or used a screen with the same resolution or higher, you could probably tell some difference, especially when speaking about the resolution of megapixels and prime sharpness. For what I do, you can’t really notice the difference. But I might as well get better quality for less, as I also want to print in the future. The EOS R and RF 24-105mm would probably be fine for me, but I’m not paying a lot more for less. The Sony combination will do me better for the money and resolution. But I’ll miss a lot of things, anyway. Might buy it in some months if it’s a good bit cheaper, or then I’m waiting for the new R camera body.
