First 60 secs of the video... Now THIS is how you compare Natural Light to Flash! Great job you two!

Allen Camera Fan I totally understand where she’s coming from. I follow her on IG. She does a lot of retouching. But she’s not really adding anything that isn’t already there. Retouching, like good retouching takes a long time if done right. But with OCF you are adding light to areas where light doesn’t naturally fall. So images shot with flash (most of the time) have a more produced look, which is fine. But I do know the difference. It makes sense to me 🤷🏾‍♂️

Yes , I thought Jason showed great restraint when she said she didn’t care about carchlights. And “I can fix it in post” is the battle cry of the photographer with a lot to learn.

I watched both videos and read comments from both channels. It's obvious both Jason and Irene have dedicated fans. Both photographers have their preferences in location, gear, lighting and post processing. They both have opinions based on their own unique experience, and I think both shared those opinions and why they do what they do. Whatever a photographer or artist does in post is personal taste. They still have to know how to capture images that allow them to create the final product. I don't think either Jason or Irene came into this shoot with the intention to sway the other, or their viewers, to their point of view. They shot together to get a better understanding of each other and find what things they have in common. I learned a lot from both Jason and Irene by watching and listening. Thank you both for sharing your ideas with the viewers and each other.

Two highly talented, likable and well-followed photographers came together to have fun and make it fun for their followers and I think we all benefit from it: 1) from a learning perspective and 2) from an entertainment perspective. We waited a long time and they delivered a 3 or 4 part collaboration video. I thank them both so much for that. Seeing the two styles side by side is educational and interesting. Bashing one or the other achieves nothing but shows ingratitude and closed-mindedness and all but eliminates the possibility of future collaborations like this which is sad for all of us. I choose to learn what I can from both, am appreciative of the effort they both put in and that's all the comment I feel is warranted or polite to make from behind a keyboard or to their faces. Thank you Jason and Irene.

What an amazing series of videos. Thank you Jason, Irene, Asha and all the assistants for putting this together for us. It is inspirational on so many levels. Although some people obviously feel the need to pick a "winner", personally, I appreciate both of your unique styles, techniques, and personalities. I think the winners are us, the viewers, who got a chance to see two gifted photographers work their magic.

I may not agree with Irene most of the time, but Jason handled it well. Giving her the due respect for her style that she carved out for herself. Jason, I love your pics. I shoot HSS most of the time, as I have a contrasty style, HSS accentuates the natural colors, without having to photoshop much. Personally, I feel the AD600 has more contrast as compared to the Rotolight EOS, I prefer the AD600 in bright sunlight an AD200 indoors. Maybe they are different beasts, but the AD600 suits my style. As you say " find out what works for you and you get only one chance to get it right". 😊😊

Watched both of your videos, and I think it was a fine example of both skills. It seems a lot of people are being agitated by one style or another, but in the end I think it just boils down to who can do what and clients will just seek what style they are seeking in any projects to hire a particular photographer. Amazing work either way and naturally so, when they both have such magnetic and loyal following who admire their work!

I watched this video 2 years ago and it was the video that got me started into learning how to use off-camera flash. I used to be an all natural light photographer and I was content with that. But after seeing this video and hearing Irene saying that she can do the same thing in post. I thought yeah that’s not hard to do just do it in post to make it look like you flash. But it does take a lot of work in the editing process. And it took a lot of time and after seeing other videos saying off-camera flash makes everything so much easier and then I saw your video here I decided it’s time to teach myself off-camera flash and high-speed sync. And after learning I have never look back on to natural light Photography unless I’m doing weddings. Everything else I have a couple Godox ad600’s and ad200’s that can handle any job. My editing process has tripled in speed of finishing it and my business has quadrupled since I learned how to use off-camera flash. And I live in a small town and I am the only one that uses off-camera flash for their outdoor portraits. Everybody else only uses them in their studios. They don’t feel like dragging light stands and strobes out. That’s fine with me. Don’t get me wrong I don’t think there’s nothing wrong with natural light but for me lighting up the photos making them so vibrant is what my clients love about my work. It don’t look like everyone else’s. Great video

I liked both Jason’s and Irene’s shots. But I liked Jason’s attitude a bit better because he was willing to try a bunch of things, even if he wasn’t that confident on natural light he still did it and showed us comparisons. In the other hand I wish Irene had been willing to try a bit more of flash in every location.

Superb series with two amazing photographers .. while I love all the shots .. I think I enjoyed more just listening to you both talk through your thought processing as you setup for and captured your shots .. it really helped me to see how I should be thinking of visualizing the image the before trying to create it .. that way I know what to tell the camera to do (assuming I know enough about my camera to start with)

Saw all the videos on both of your sites. Irene, you're a class act; I understood exactly what you meant. Jason, you're a decent guy too; really enjoyed the interview you did of Irene. I've seen a couple of your vids about the business end of photography, and couldn't agree more. The banter you both shared was interesting and enjoyable. I spent more than 25 years in pro photography (more than 2K weddings). Along the way, met (and trained) a lot of photographers . The type of friendly banter on display between the two of you was very typical of what I experienced among my colleagues. This type of banter was always fun, friendly, and challenged everyone's reasons why they use their method. Working professionals don't drop their style developed over years at the drop of a hat... just because another colleague has a different approach -- for a different audience. Such banter typically confirms pros are comfortable in their own styles with what they do. That said, there are always things we learn by watching and challenging each other; these little tidbits we learn refine what we do, which is a different concept entirely than a wholesale abandonment of one approach vs. another. Those making disparaging comments against either of you (on either channel) are providing we viewers (and readers) with an expose of abject ignorance. So, thank you both for comparing and contrasting your approach, and presenting us with such great and informative entertainment. Much appreciated, and I do hope you're both able to do more collabs with other photographers. It was fun to watch.

4:49 i think (Synthetic) is the word irene is looking for... its true that for some its easier to amplify natural light in post than to get the perfect flash temperature/distance - Later on.. jason finally nailed it when he decided to tilt the flash upwards so its hitting only the eye area and finally using his 85mm 1.4 @ 9:49 - ambient light amplified through post on the subject looks best because the colors and shadows always matches what our brains are expecting to see However . ramping up the shadows in post risks more noise and also more time spent editing on each shot - if only one can truly master to emulate ambient light through artificial lighting(Flashes/strobe etc.) such that the eyes cant tell its even artificially lit. it would change photography/cinematography forever. - so far theres only few photographers that are close in doing that... and lanier is one of them - thats why its exciting to watch great talents like lanier.. these legends push the boundaries of artificial lighting and inspire flash manufacturers to further develop the current lighting technology.

I think people who posted hate comments against Jason Lanier on Irene's video really had no idea it is really weird to have the model underexposed. HSS in this scenario is necessary (unless a ND was used) Natural light simply isn't flexible enough.

I think Irene had some VERY good photos and I can see why she has a following and think she does a very nice job. To me however, even when Jason was shooting Natural Light only his photos had more depth and "pop" to them. That's a style I prefer. Irene goes for more of a dreamy fairy tale style of photo which others may prefer.

Both good photographers but what I like about Jason is he doesn’t limit his abilities just because.. he can get a great shot under any situation and he likes the challenge of that oppose to telling someone that shot can’t be done it’s bad light.. he will get it done or at least try to with his knowledge to manipulate light..

I like Irene and her natural light portraits, she always has great interaction with models, nice to watch!... However in this particular session I would buy photos with HSS shot by Jason... Flash really brings out something more, again for this session. All light photographer like Jason must have mastered natural light to be able to work with flash to do more magics. Flash light isn't easy (somehow I also prefer Jason's natural light shots in this session). Good natural light is not always available and favorable for background choices

They are both great photographers, just with different approaches. Personally, I agree with Jason's opinion about all the benefits of using artificial light. While Irene's created photos many (including me) can only dream of, manipulating the lighting in post can be time consuming yet not always perfect, let alone the amount of noise it may introduce (which is critical if you shoot a lot of paid jobs) However Irene's style of editing just seems more pleasant to my eyes, as Jason's is more dramatic and contrasty, but that's just personal taste. Overall, great series! We cheap-ass RU-vid learner need more of this!!!

I very much enjoy and learn from BOTH of these accomplished photographers/artists. What I DO believe should happen, so that it does not give the air of "competition" that some may perceive it as being, (because as harmless as it may be intended, the wording, "shoot out", can bring about an image of the old west where 2 foes are ready to see who draws first) would be, as a suggestion only, to just simply rename these invites. Perhaps call them, Day Shoots. "Jason and ?? Day Shoot" session. This way no one gets an image in their head of the two photographers "competing" with each other; but, rather, introducing themselves, their STYLES and work they have done, like to do and what they use and don't use to get those shots (gear, location, light direction, etc.). Just my opinion. But, regardless, I thank, you, thank you, thank you, for offering this to us, Jason. It is truly awesome having this format to see how seasoned photographers work and what works for them. Take care, Huie

Irene seemed to be surprised at the results of high speed sync flash like she's never done it before. I don't know her background and I'm sure she does amazing work (you don't need to know everything about lighting to be an amazing photographer) but it does rise some questions about her all around ability. Sorry for the backhanded comment but she seemed pretty cocky about not shooting for clients which made me asume she just knows it all and has a preference. I don't always watch the full videos so I'm sure I missed a few things and I'm now a d*** for calling it out. By no means do I think I'm better, it was just an observation.

I have heard about natural light vs strobe so many times. I think people fail to understand one thing, a strobe user can be a natural light shooter as well, but not the other way round, because wheres the strobe/flash when u need it? How about a shoot at the beach where the backlight is so strong it kills the image all together? An image is not a calculated judgement, like mathematics. When one sees an image, they form a judgement at the back of their mind whether the pic is nice, or not. The use of light helps the human eye to focus on the subject better, our eyes tend to focus on bright things than dark, that is why sometimes vignette works so well on portraits. At the end of the day, hard work pays off, and it isn't easy to lug around a strobe with its modifiers and stands. Natural lighting simply limit one's composition, it requires light to hit the subject at certain angles and sometimes that makes for bad composition or a missed composition due to natural light direction.

@fotomaker1957
@fotomaker1957 6 лет назад
Irene makes a very valid statement. Lets all keep in mind that art is very much in the eye of the beholder. Great art is first and for most what the artist believes is beautiful. Weather everyone else loves it is secondary. I think where many people are missing the point is Jason comes at his art from a professionals view point in having to satisfy the client and still be able to express his vision. Irene and many like her are strictly creating what they want and not having to satisfy anyone but them selves. For a working Pro or ambitious amateur, we need to be able to deal with any lighting condition and produce a product for the person laying down their money. So in the end they both produce beautiful images and we all gain from watching the videos. WIN WIN

Irene Rudnyk I think I get the message you’re trying to convey. A high production image can look, well, staged rather than candid. Not that that is bad but in certain situations, I can understand why one wouldn’t necessarily desire that look. If I took photos of my children playing in a park, for example, a high production image will come across as staged which can be distracting. Some images can look like there are two suns lol.
@IreneRudnyk

Hey Mike N, I appreciate your comment but I would disagree a bit about the professional side. You see i have worked with many clients before, here is the link to some of my client work : www.dropbox.com/sh/s9pdgwzynjuc0dz/AACOI48Ep70_xWsvtzQcVRmQa?dl=0 But i found that having a distinct style is far more important that being able to shoot everything. I don't think that we should be jack of all trades but master of none. I started making more money when i focused on my fine art work, people loved it, it was different. I had no competition in my city, because everyone was doing the same thing. NO competition = i could charge whatever i wanted. I stopped working with clients last year, and i still have lots begging me to work with them again, because they cant find anyone quite like me. Look at any famous photographer, they are known for something specific, not for doing everything.

Flash is awesome but sometimes, it looks too artificial for me. I would rather slightly photoshop details on to the photo to improve it, if needed. Still can't deny that flash is essential for all photographers to make sure you don't miss your chance to get it right.

Great video. But I would rather be out shooting more than spending all of that time doing post work when I can capture it when I shoot. I guys when you don't have clients you can spend that much time.

I slightly prefer natural light, but in post the HSS flash could be softened a bit more and be really great as well. With this model in this situation, HSS was just a tad too exposed for my taste. The natural light created a more seamless shot--better merged with the environment. I guess it depends how much you want the model to 'pop'.

Whether ambient or flash, the important thing is just to get the job done. Instead of just using only one style. Why not both for varying situations.

Well you can t convince her in anything..she adds a ton of light in post to make her shot pop and yet does not agree that a well used dtrobe has by far better results,she loses details and she has more noise and as much as you edit in post as more artificial it looks..She can only shoot in golden hour,and all of her photos has exactely the same look,as if it s the same shot over and over only with different models..I would like to say that i love her photos and she s very talented in styling chosing dresses , but fact is that her work has no variety, again and again same photos,even settings never change,her aperture never changes ,never seen a wider shot at f 8.0 for example where you can see the beauty of the locations,no dramatic skies,uses a ladder to shoot feom above escaping white washed skies..Jason shoots everything,every shoot has a taste , and a different look,much more variety and beauty in his arsenal,by far more accomplished photographer,he can shoot anything and anytime..there s drama in his work,every video is a surprise you just can t predict what he will do,I watched all Irene s videos ,and i was surprised watching the first the second and then it becomes boring..Just my point..

Hmm, the same shots he posted here looked great here but a bit odd on her video, like the bushes at the top in some shots looked odd but here are fine. Maybe some issues with compression or something.

Cameras have a hard time capturing the real natural world as our eyes see it. Our eyes have a dynamic range of approx 20 stops. Camera have a dynamic range of approx 10 to 14 depending on the camera. So there are times when adding a little fill will make it look more natural. Like your eyes are currently seeing it. I totally get the natural light look but what some natural light photographers wind up doing sometimes not all is adding the fill in PS which is very time consuming if you have hundreds of pictures to edit. If you get the shot as close as possible to perfect then the easier your editing will be.

So I edit in post to make the shots look more natural, sounds like an oxymoron statement to me🤔. Good work all around btw.

roberto cordero I think that by ‘natural’ she may have meant not staged.
@robertocordero4682
@robertocordero4682 6 лет назад
LtDeadeye don’t think so because then that would be more like street photography where you don’t pose the subject or place them in a specific place to shoot. I believe she means natural as just using natural light and no strobes, flashes or any other light introduced by the photographer. However, her shots aren’t natural since there’s nothing natural when using photoshop to use the liquify tool to alter images and or adding light with this same program.

It's not that hard to understand really. Natural (meaning no additional light source during the shoot) vs. adding artificial light during the shoot. And if you think Jason does not edit the picture he takes in any way, you are sorely mistaken. His photos look edited out the wazoo! Talk about unnatural. And Irene's pictures LOOK natural, even after she spends time with them in photoshop. It's the way that her photos look after shooting AND editing that makes her so popular. You don't have to like it.
@robertocordero4682
@robertocordero4682 6 лет назад
JaneCP3 it’s not about liking or disliking his or her shots. It’s about the fact that it’s not natural if you edit to the point where shot looks nothing like it did out of camera. Jason informs that he edits every image but do to the artificial light his edits last about 5 minutes as apposed to 30 minutes for Irene’s shots including the fact that she states that she also adds light to the subject in post with photoshop. Therefore, in reality they aren’t natural.

Her beautiful photos speak for themselves as does the Sony harsh unnatural light and color that is light years behind Canon
@joebernado2451

The Canon kicks ass,the images speak for themselves . . .I wish she had used the Canon 70 -200 mm because the Sony's deeply flawed camera design can't do justice to any lens

A good contrast of opinions and methods in this video. Though Irene wants natural looking scenery and fairtale look from the model via heavy editing in PS. Jason shows how to use HSS and how easy it is apply. I like both the natural and HSS with a bias to HSS. My opinion is try to get as much right in camera so there is minimal work to do in post. To address Irene's concern of natural scenario and not make artificial. Perhaps a honeycomb on the softbox for light just to fall on the model ! Of course Irene is limiting her shooting time to a few hours of the day as she has no client time table or deadlines as she does not have clients ! Jason has clients so he has to get the best look from what weather card he is dealt on the day. The model was very good and has a very natural flow about her. Though the girl in the denim shorts is lovely ,... ha

You can do almost anything in post...but why when you can get it in camera? High end cameras with their extreme dynamic range (many over 15 stops) can increase light in the photo, but it's not the same type of separation you get when applying flash directly on your subject. I find most photographers who resist flash do so because they don't know how to use it to their advantage. I get that feeling from Irene.
