I accidentally slurred my speech twice in the last year saying megapixels, but today, I did it on purpose just to see who would do a double take. Next time you talk to your camera store, use mega pickle with a straight face ;)
Great video! I have been waiting soooo long now for the R1 and you are the only one who keeps talking about it to build up the suspension to the first official announcement!
Well, that's because I really enjoy the stuff myself. I love cameras I love the technology. I plan to purchase this camera myself unless it just becomes a big yawn. But I'm hoping we're gonna get some leaked information very soon.
Look forward to seeing the new R1! Hey Simon, would you consider doing a video for dummies on what a global shutter, back lit sensor, and stacked sensor are? What are the pro and cons of each. Who would benefit and why. I hear these terms, but don't really understand what they are and how they are going to improve a camera and who would benefit. You're the best and thanks!
You'd be surprised, Jim, I actually talk about the difference between the stack and BSA sensor quite often. But you're welcome to post the question during a live stream.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker Might have to do that, but I still think it would make for a great deep dive stand alone video! 😁 You ponder it Simon! You could even tie in who is winning where and who needs to catch up where. Thanks for all your hard work keeping us informed.
@@jimtipton8888 Global shutter is the holy grail of sensor development and a true mirrorless future where you can remove mechanically shutter altogether. Current sensor we use are rolling sensor it is like CRT monitor drawing line by line ie 1080i. Global shutter is like 1080P. Stack sensor is in between these 2 technology. Of course, global shutter sensor a new in full frame thus the technology still need to further re-fine like moving the base ISO down and etc...Another term you need to know is BSI and non-bsi manufactruing process which all these sensor can be made, BSI sensor usually have better DR, currently canon doesn't use this technology.
Sorry just had to say this “mega pickles” 🤣 great video just messing with ya Thanks for getting us this info! Really makes you wonder about the r5m2 A lot of the specs we were expecting for that are being mentioned for the R1 which makes you wonder what the end specs will be
I heard the same thing. 😅 Great job Simon. With all of these reports, a “megapickle” is bound to creep in every now and again. Keep up the great reporting.
I actually did this on purpose. You'll notice how I enunciated the word perfectly. I was curious how many people would actually pick up on it, and I was surprised a lot of people caught it.
1:50 megapickles! all jokes aside, it really would be interesting to consider these specs coming from an r1, been a while since a new full frame ILC has had cross-type af points.
Now this journalistic presentation is a significant improvement for the fanboi rumor posting of much of the RU-vidrs content. Thank you for taking a professional review of the current ideas based on the rumors.
I think camera makers are missing the boat with several options. First offer options for having the mechanical shutter or not. If you don't need it, why pay for it? Second is outboard power, and also outboard data collection. Back in the days of the RCA TK-76 ENG camera, everything was outboard. Granted it was for physical reasons, but maybe we should return to the ability to outboard power and data. I could see a pro at a sporting event having a belt pack of batteries and memory so that in fact the whole event could be gathered in still or video. As an additional thought, with the speeds these cameras can now shoot, why not just shoot video? 4K at sixty frames is twice as fast as my 4K camera can shoot, so shoot video and have everything you want. Except for special effects, 60 frames is all you need.🤩
Thanks so much for sticking with me. I love doing this and keep at it. Not many would wake up at 4:00 to cover a Black Friday sale, but this is exciting especially for someone on the edge about getting the R5 or some lenses. This price changes affordability for many.
One question . . . as blazingly hot as CFExpress Type B cards already get, will we have to wear gloves to handle a Gen4 CFExpress Type B? Otherwise, the spec predictions sound entirely reasonable. And Nikon has certainly set a competitive price for Canon to deal with.
You're welcome Andrew. I think you'll like this one. I spent all evening on it. Instead of just collating the leaks and rumours, I added more analysis and forecasting. Let me know what you think.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker I think the autofocus, sensor will be greatly improved as you expressed. I think 45mp is good enough, as speed is important for professional workload. Side note, I recently reached out about my current project, did you get the message I sent over?
Simon, please tell me that the R5ii is coming in jan or max feb. Though I wish it was coming in December 😅 I will settle with the r5ii and 24-105 f2.8. Dream setup
Except for the lens selection, it really does sound like the perfect camera. If they don't disable any EOS lenses, it may be worth it, and just tempting enough.
You said that too many pros insist on keeping a mechanical shutter for Canon to remove it. Why is that, if we suppose that rolling shutter will not be a problem with the stacked sensor when shooting with the electronic shutter?
There are various reasons. I'd go further and say that there are pros and cons to electronic and mechanical. There is also bias that enters into it as well. Some just perceive it is better.
By what you says, R1 is not going to be king of king. The R1 sensor use might just re-use to r5 mark 2, something like z8/29 story. Sony a9m3 is the new king.
Not saying it won't be king, just depends on what is baked into it. Claims are it will be the master of everything and has all new parts. This will be a big update, just not sure how much as yet.
Speaking of CCD's in digital dslr's, my little Nikon D40 could shoot flash up to 1/500th of a second shutter speed because it could read the whole sensor at once.
Sounds like the specs of the Sony A1 which has been out since March 2021, with the A1's better 9.44 million dot EVF and 240 fps refresh rate, and 30fps raw shooting with large, medium and small raw files . The R1 might be a bit better in some video specs, but certainly the R1 as you spec it here, is not "the camera to rule them all" as Canon has touted for the past two years. Maybe it will be better than these "leaked" specs. And what will the second generation Sony A1 and Nikon Z9 bring to the table ? Cheers and thanks
That is the elephant in the room, isn’t it? By the time Canon’s flagship arrives, I’m sure people will be wondering what Sony will let fall from their Kimono sleeves this time next year, and the rumour sites will have been playing guessing games for months before. It’s not just the global shutter thing that RU-vidrs leapt on, but what else Sony put into the A7RV and A9iii that suggests they’re putting some long hours in.
@@Photogopinion Doesn't really matter. By making the Canon RF mount Flange Focal Distance 20mm - 2mm longer than Sony E-mount and 4mm longer than Nikon Z-mount, Canon RF lenses can be adapted for use in Sony or Nikon mirrorless cameras BUT Sony E-mount and Nikon Z-mount lenses can never be used on Canon RF cameras. So Sony and Nikon will never be as profitable as Canon.
I appreciate the kudos Paul. I'm always working to improve. I spent about 6 hours on that one in the evening. I wanted it to be better :) Thanks for watching.
Did you notice how clearly I enunciated it? I did it on purpose this time. I accidentally said it yesterday so I thought I would do it on purpose this time and see how many people noticed it ;)
That's the challenge with forecasting: being able to use historical data, knowledge of the market and experience to predict what will happen. After all, Canon has already done the same internally, but I don't have their data. We will see soon enough.
Ha, at 1:48 did you say "mega pickels"?!? I stopped editing on my other screen and replayed it 3 times... too good. Looked in the comments, but everyone being serious there. I just wanna see what goodies trickle down to the R5MkII... the wait is killing me. My orig Canon R, yes just R, needs retirement...
Yep, I did it on purpose to see how many would notice. ;) I am sure we will. Canon has stopped sleeping on the job, its just getting products to the market and listen the restrictions on third-party lenses.
To be the master of everything, it should at least have 8K-RAW 120fps working without external Powerbank. Without 8K-RAW 120, I would probably go for the R5 MKII, as I think the rest will be close to the R1 and the MKII should also have 8K-RAW 60fps. But I can't wait until all the specs of both bodies will be announced. The only decision I already made is, that I'll only buy one of them.
Oh dear me I just thought if I part ex the R5 and the RF70-200 F2.8 I may get close to the R1 and with the kit lens 24-105 f 2.8 if its any good LOL the RF100-500 and Im done may have to sell the RF28-70 F2 :( but will have to see
If they don't, we're gonna need to storm Canon. I think that camera definitely has to have a full-size HDMI. These company should never use micro mini is the smallest they should go.
I voted for DP 2.1, but no manufactures has adopted that port despite it being more professional with a far superior data rate. Its compatible with HDMI and USB with a simple adapter.
I can guarantee that the R1 will have the same card in both slots. But the Canon use are five Mark two I still think Canon's gonna go S D, and see if CFexpress.
Sounds like the sony a1 with better video & a pro body. 🤷♂️ Not exactly a big advancement. Sony needs to put the a1 into a different role & just make the a9iii as the sports/event camera with that global shutter. A1 with a true “pro body” with 75mp stacked sensor (30something mp in medium raw) at 40fps.
Mega pickles...you make me laugh. As always, keep up the good work and keep'em flying...from the little red planet. Some where in south Tejas... 👽👽👽👽👽👾👾👾👾👾wooka wooka wooka wooka wooka ...I crack myself up.
I like how Sony's Global Shutter DEMANDS some kind of survival response by Canon and other companies. Those who can't keep up technologically, will just cast shade on the significance of Global Shutters altogether? So when exactly is Canon going to actually release the "R1"? (a camera that has NEVER even received official acknowledgment as an upcoming project?) Lot's to say about a camera that doesn't exist; or is delayed every time Sony comes out with a camera (as to not be embarrassed by the comparison?) Maybe it will be called the "R2" ?? Because we know the R3 was SUPPOSED to be the R1, but was just too lacking... ...or maybe when Sony creates a sensor that Canon can base their R1 - on? (since that's where Canon gets all its sensors)
Sony has at least 2 next camera generations almost in their pocket: 1. Switch to NVME SSDs and sell a new camera. 2. Improve the dynamic range & noise performance of a global shutter sensor. It's 4 years of "progress". The second step requires an effort, but the first step requires a political will.
We saw something similar with their first mirrorless cameras, they kept at it and were the leader. Its possible Sony may do that again, but I sense the A9 II will be a stacked sensor. If they manage a global shutter in that camera, I will be shocked.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker I am looking for camera manufacturers to move to replaceable NVME SSDs and interface which gives speeds similar to Thunderbolt 5. It will be a tough decision for camera manufacturers because it's always cheaper today not to do that. I am ok to have a single memory card and a 4 TB PCI-E 5 NVME SSD. Valve does it right with their Steam Deck, even though it's a much cheaper computing device than an entry-level full-frame camera. Still, such a technological breakthrough among camera manufacturers will require enormous political will and severe consumer pressure.
Isn't that what CFexpress cards are? They use MVMe technology. Type B has 2 PCIe lanes. Since I got the R5, I have significant upgraded my cards and the performance. I can now transcode directly on the cards and they are fast at copying off. Capacities can reach 4TB which with dual card slots can give us a staggering 8TB ;)
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker They both use NVME protocol on top of PCI-e protocol, but they use different amounts of power and different heat dissipation, and the internal components of a typical CFExpress card are not that good. Technically, you can come up with an adapter for M.2 2230. Still, I prefer to directly connect M.2 2280 PCI-e SSD to a motherboard using 4 lanes while having a proper heatsink, which is part of the thermal design of the camera. Here are the benefits that you get: Faster and more reliable memory for a lower price Better heat dissipation, which is not physically achievable when we use CFExpress cards so that you can afford to supply more power.
@@OrdinaryFilmmakerbut that’s a lens that is the first of its kind, so there’s no competition from other brands and manufacturers so far for it. Canon already had 2x 34mm L series lenses on EF mount. They should have had an RF 35mm L out 2 years ago.. But yeah, another 17 years for the RF version sounds about right at this rate!
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker on average, the Dutch pay 21% more from import taxes. Note that there is no 5-9% reduction from usd currency to euro. It is literally the same price, but with 20% added to the flavor.
@@krane15 yeah I am basically saying the pressure is on to do something big. Right now a lot of people are satisfied with the R5 or R3. Basically a generation is about to go by and we expect big changes in 3 to 4 years because whatever we get, we will be stuck with for another 4 years.
