I’ve been blown away with mine, just was a long time 1D series user thinking nothing was better but this blows my 1DXm3 out of the water. It may not be as well built but its focusing system is worlds different. The only thing I’m not keen on and maybe it’s a setting I’ve not discovered but in mechanical shutter mode trying to track a bird in flight is impossible, the blackout on the EVF is terrible, but like I said it could be a setting. I can’t think how much better if anything the R1 will be.

Excellent review. Mathieu is my favorite reviewer. I decided to upgrade from the Canon R to the R6 after seeing the R6 comparison with the outstanding R3. I use my full frame camera primarily for low light work. I'm not a pro but have been photographing is I was 13 and have been retired for a while.
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
Thanks! Let me know how you find the R6!

Great Review! Very interesting Camera for Wildlife indeed! But Canon and Sony have no chances with me :) I’m very happy with the results from my OM-1 + 300mm f4! In my case the M43 system is the best. Robust, practical, efficient, and meets my priorities in a compact way: video, Real Estate, Food, Wildlife, Macro and Travel!

Very well done review. I'm interested in bird photography and found myself watching the review and wishing the R3 was the new R7, a king of cropped-sensor cameras offering a little more reach with the same tech behind a 33-meg sensor. I've had a chance to hold an R3 and found it beautifully built and very comfortable to hold either in vertical or horizontal mode as well as surprisingly light. Coupled with the Canon 100-500mm lens you'd get the equivalent of 800mm's, just about perfect as far as I'm concerned.
@franktherabbit42

You can use a teleconverter! they work amazingly. You can also shoot in crop mode to get the extra reach!

Great review. is it possible to shoot stills while filming on video mode at the same time?
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
I don't have the camera with me anymore so I can't verify this, but there is a function in playback mode to grab still frames from a 4K clip and save them as JPG or HEIF.

thanks for an excellent review. Do you find the R3 + 100-500 a better combo for wildlife than OM1 + 150-400?
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
Good question. The R3 certainly has a better AF, and also a better sensor. But... The OM-1 and 150-400 give you more reach thanks to the 2x crop factor (1000mm equivalent) with a good aperture of F5.6 (with the built-in TC 1.25x). If you want the same reach with the Canon, you need the 2X extender and you then work at F14, which basically erases the advantage of the large sensor, especially concerning high ISO. The OM-1 also has faster drive speed and Pro Capture, the latter is something I really missed on the R3. It's not an easy choice to be honest. I really like the AF of the R3 (I can trust it more), but the OM option offers more versatility overall.

Thank you for the in depth review. I’m interested to know the plate being used on the rf 100-500 foot. That might work for using it on a gimbal head monopod. Thanks again.
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
It’s a “arca swiss” compatible plate from Peak Design. I have several of them at home and they fit nice on my tripod and monopod. You can find many from various brands. Just make sure your tripod head is arca swiss compatible.

Even though I'm a Canon shooter it's highly unlikely i will ever own one but I thoroughly enjoyed this review. You do an excellent job of a difficult subject. Excellent website also by the way I look forward to your future work especially the new Fuji XH2s and Canon R7. I got fed up waiting for my R7 pre order I cancelled it. I'm now trying to decide between the OM-1 and the XH2s. I really appreciate the work you do that other reviewers like dpreview just can't cover. Like for example they recently reviewed the XH2s but I actually got very little out of it. Look forward to seeing your version.

19:20 I thought Switched Tracked Subject to 2 would prevent LOCKED to background ? for me, it seems to work. Less locked to background but it now VERY JUMPY....
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
I found 0 to work better for me. The camera stays on the initial subject and doesn't look to switch to another subject, where it can also get confused and switch to the background instead. If you set it to 2, I think it will look to switch to another subject as soon as possible, so that's probably why you find it more jumpy. I guess it also depends on the type of background etc.

Great review. I am struggling between 2 cameras, and this really makes me consider the R3. I am looking to get a used Canon 1DX Mark 2 for a lot less money than the R3, but the R3 seems to be a much more superior camera. I have never used a 1DX mark 2, so maybe I cant judge the differences I speak of. Even saving the cost more than half the R3, I am confused which way to go. Tough decision. Thanks for sharing.

I have no experience with the 1DX mark 2 so I can't help you with the decision. Obvously the price difference is diffcult to overcome. Did you try to see if the R3 is available second-hand?

I’ve got 1dx2 and r3 …the r3 is by far better in a lot of ways..ibis ,focus on eye,4k 120,30fps,and quiet shutters…the 1dx is like a gattling gun…no good for skittish wildlife or churches…but the stills and video and build quality are stunning at 1/3 of the price

SD card can run the r3 buffer for a long time, my sd V90 angelbird has a base speed of 260mo/s (v90 but much more), so my R3 take with that specific card up to or arround 340 shoots (11seconds so sd can be enough) But you can get different result .... what I mean is that your buffer test are not good in the way that canon buffer are different with any ISO the much the value is high the less you get photos out of a burst It is not very usefull to suppress anything except subject detection from the q menu because it stay on le last parameter changed so for wild life just staying on it is the solution. There is another port available in fornt which is the n3 port

I saw the current James Bond film in that cinema late last year. Isn't it a great little place. It's called 'Libanus 1887', unless I'm very much mistaken, if anyone is interested in looking it up. I went with wife, daughter and soon-to-be son in law to celebrate my acquisition of my Leica 007 edition to match the ending of my phone number which happens to coincide with the first film I ever saw in a cinema and possibly my first colour film ever, which was Goldfinger. It was also probably my first trip on a rural double-decker bus, from Aberaeron to Aberystwyth. I've never trusted buses since. As they say, every picture tells a story. A different story for every one of us.

Canon can have better highlight recovery if you enable that DR+ or something that changes min ISO to 200 but you get more highlight recovery and this affects RAW's also!
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
It's called Highlight Tone Priority. I thought that only affects the JPG or HEIF file. I remember testing this a few years ago with another camera, and I didn't see any difference with the RAW file.

33:11 why didn't you use flashlight? You lifted iso very high and it reflected on the photo with visible noise.
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
A flashlight would have annoyed the audience unfortunately. Plus all they wanted was a few wide shots of the theater. But while I was there, I tested the AF to see how it would react in this kind of situation, and I kept that photo because it’s a good example of how the R3 managed to focus on people with basically no light on them. Of course it’s not a photo I would deliver to a client, but interesting for the review.

@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons you set 1/50 shutter speed. It is very low to make a photo with movements of people in the theatre

Excellent analysis as usual, Mathieu. I kinda lost interest if as you suggest there is no Pre-AF in ES mode. This is a major and important feature of the Panasonic and Fujifilm cameras I have used for wildlife. A strange omission and a deal-breaker for me. In any case, I have just upgraded to the Fujifilm X-HS2 which I hope will soon be a subject of another of your videos.
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
Thanks. No there isn't a Pro Capture or Pre-shoot mode, but I hope they will bring it via firmware update. How do you find the X-H2S?
@enigmabletchley6936
@enigmabletchley6936 Год назад
@@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons I'm still evaluating it. My belief is that on paper - discounting for a minute that it is APS-C and not FF - it stacks up against the Z9 and R3 but at a significantly lower cost even if you add the optional grip. I am a Fuji shooter but I was thinking of the R3+100-500 but the more I researched the R3, the less I was enamoured of some of the features. The Fuji is just as well built, has a better EVF, faster fps (although I only go up to 20fps) and a much cheaper ecosphere of existing mature lenses available on the s/h market. On top of that I regularly shoot wildlife with my X-T4 and now a few times with the X-H2S up to 12800 and after judicious post-processing can still print up to 20x16inches with no apparent lack of detail. I think Canon are making a big mistake by not giving the prosumer market the equivalent of a mirrorless 7d (as are Nikon with no equivalent to the D500) and I am afraid the new R7 is no mirrorless replacement (the buffer can only achieve 1sec of shooting at 20fps before it fills!). I can't understand what Canon or Nikon are protecting or afraid of because right now the X-HS2 is the obvious mirrorless successor to Canon and Nikons prosumer APS-C wildlife cameras. Just my two cents!
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
You have some good points. I have pre-ordered the R7 ages ago but still no sign of it. BTW, I’ll test the X-H2S soon, found one to rent as well as the new 150-600mm.

From $2,000.00 to now scammed/hiked to $6,000.00 for a nice amateur camera body. No real pro camera with pros requirements. Price hiked is due to China's COVID, lockdown, record-breaking drought & Russia's world largest wildfires. But in reality the photography world is dead. Phone companies are going to market phones to be used more as taking pictures & videos. Smart people rather get ATG's over mirrorless camera system. So throwing out an easy 2 years payment plans for $2,000.00 is a better choice. You got phone/text/wifi/camera! Because camera companies refused to listen to ATG's by putting phone feature in camera using LCD touch screen to dials.
