The holy grail of travel lenses..... it really doesn't get any better than this. Well, unless someone made a 24-150mm f/4 full frame lens.... (closest is the Tamron 35-150mm f/2.8-4)
You are a born teacher sir. An intelligent content creator. Never believed I could watch from beginning to the end. I celebrate your well detailed review. Shalom
I am surprised to see you got fewer sharp photos than the A7RIV ! Would it be the same with a fully side-by-side comparison !? I can also see you had steadyshot off and Hi speed setting, there must also be some of the other settings that can be better !? If the Lens was the Sony 200-600mm 5.6-6.3 G, then it is know that there are problems with stabilizer for the R-series cameras !
Do you use auto ISO !? I will recommend to use either 100 ISO or 320 ISO in good light situations, the sensor have a dual gain, so the 320 ISO setting is better than than 250 and 400 for dynamic range ! The noise level at 320 is about the same as at ISO 125 and 160 and ISO 320 have better noise level than ISO 200, 250, 400+
26:55 I wasnt aware that this icon exist! I use the X-H2s also for MSFT Teams, of course in FHD only, as we have shitty internet in Germany. But: The cam is directly behind the window and sometime 1h or longer in the sun while running.
Why is there this problem that telezooms are apparently only for wildlife , absolutely all tests are only wildlife this wildlife that , not about for example architecture or longrange landscape where you can’t get close for environmental or security reasons. For those sharpness is far more important but it’s always af on a bird that i don’t care , with only acceptable sharpness due to movement ,that doesn’t help for people like me to know which one is better.
I shoot on A6700 and noticed a very strange thing. I tested 4 supertele lens - Sony 200-600, Tamron 150-500, Sigma 150-600 Sport (E) and 150-600 Contemporary from Canon EF MC-11 converter. With all my surprise Sony and Tamron lens has exactly same issue which you describe, alote shot are miss focused. On Sigma lenses this not accruing almost at all, i don't understand how this is possible, especially on Sony but that was my results. I even tested 3 different units of Sony 200-600 and all have the same issue. AF was tracking and was blazing fast but when I check pictures a hole bunch of them were miss focused. Of course, I tested all of them on BIF.
Comparing the Tamron to the Fuji 150-600mm on specs alone: I like the Fuji's focus buttons and preset focus point. That alone is worth it for me, plus the Fuji will get any firmware updates with possible improvements. I think I will try to get the Fuji at some point.
Until yesterday we were calling all this "Ai" bs an algorithm cause that's what it is. The "Ai" marketing gimmicks and technique of sci-fi terms thrown around used to work on selling kids toys on tv but is now working on adults as well. The chip may do a great job but no matter how much improvement it gets in the next 10yrs it'll still be just that, a more developed chip based on algorithms than what we also had 30yrs ago when noone used the fancy terms to believe we are suddenly living in the future. If people keep buying this nonesense we'll soon see a major company releasing Ai toilet paper...reminds me of the effect apple with their "i" 🧐 naming scheme had on the rest of the market where everyone released iproducts. People so weak and manipulable.
For weddings and social events, wich one would i choose? the size of the R8 is a problem when you put in a big lens? The mount of the camera is so stressed? Thank You!
I've been debating between these two cameras for weeks now and this is the best, most helpful video I've found, thank you so much!! Your comparisons helped me finally settle on the R8, as I especially love theater & concert photography and portraits, so the better focus and low-light performance on the R8 far outweigh some of its weaknesses compared to the R7 for me personally. Thank you again so much, off to get my new R8!! :))
Matthew ! In relation to your analysis and statistics you mentioned putting different shots into different folders depending on the camera set up - MS/ES/AF zone/wide tracking etc ! I'd be interested in knowing the way in which you do this ? You have some desktop software that does some of this automatically based on the metadata ? Thanks, Robbie.
Every time I change a setting, I record a quick video that I’ll use as memo. The video clip filename will help sort things. Or I record an audio memo with the cameras that have that functionality.
Thank you for the really good review. I have both, The 70-300 is better for travel or when you want to be lighter but the 100-400 is the best lens by a good margin. Not only for the 100mm extra reach, that allows you to be closer and have mode blurry background, but also the tripod collar makes a huge difference when using the tripod as its a much better balanced system. So for travel and the dayts I dont want to carry my main camera bag I use the 70-300. When I do want the absolute best IQ and experience with a Tripod (Landscape photography for example) I take the 100-400,.
i heard that for birds in flight on the a7rv it’s best to set it to “locked on” and to turn ON aps-c cropping. apparently when using aps-c cropping you got focus points covering the entire frame and it should perform much better
A really interesting review, especially for the surprising result on the AF score. I am asking around to see if others have found that performance improves over time through AI learning. I also wonder if it would be better with the Sony 100-400 G Master
This is a great video. I have the sony 200-600 and I am not sure I could cope with it being any heavier. 60mm at the widest is very very appealing though.
wish there was open gate video option + screen would flip out to film yourself like the sony a7rv. also really hope someday will get sigma art glass on nikon since i like the 85mm 1.4 sigma art and not the price of nikon 85mm 1.2
It doesn't work for birds or animals, and the camera has the tendency sometimes of seeing (human) faces where there are none. If that happens, it will override the AF area you selected.
Full credit to Sony in making 4K video look like 1080p . I don’t think many people care as long as they have 2 card slots and a big grip and a full size HDMI and a sixty fps without a crop and dynamic range 15 stops and AI autofocus, nobody cares about the actual resolution or photos which is why we buy an expensive camera and lenses.
Currently have the R7 but I'm looking to upgrade for better iso performance. That battery difference is a dealbreaker. I have nearly 10 LP-E6/LP-E6N/LP-E6NH batteries from past cameras, many of them being the original canon part. I'm not willing to replace them all at $60 ea, so I'm thinking the R6 (only 20MP?), or more ideally the R5 (higher megapixel) would be the better direction to go. Why would they switch to a 1040mAh point-n-shoot battery in a full-frame camera? Just so they could fit a SD slot next to it?
No, most likley because the body is smaller and it's roughly the same of the previous EOS RP camera, so fitting a larger battery would have force Canon to update the design somehow.
