Last week, Calum surprised us with the release of two brand-new canon Mirrorless cameras, the Canon R1 and the highly anticipated canon R5 II, but should you upgrade if you are a Canon R5 shooter? Let's have a look at some of the specs to work out if it is worth upgrading?
I hope this video helps and don't forget to subscribe for more awesome videos just like this :)

I’m most likely gonna upgrade next year. The R5 is still a VERY capable camera. It doesn’t stop being good as soon as the new model comes out.

I belong amongst those who will upgrade from my current R5. The new more capable AF, the eye control, pre registered person priority, fully usable e-shutter... From these I will benefit in my everyday use.

Finally. I don’t feel the need to upgrade my R5.

Great video! R5ii is an excellent upgrade for video shooters and stills shooters who shoot round ball sports. But the stacked sensor is perhaps the slowest on the market -- much slower than the R3. And I still get some rolling shutter distortion with the R3. That means I would feel constrained to stick with mechanical shutter most of the time. And if you use mechanical shutter, almost none of the AF, pre-shoot, blackout-free, improvements apply. I love the eye-control AF from the R3. But is that enough to justify a US$2,300 upgrade from the R5? No. Not at all. I love having the latest and greatest, but the R5 is still an outstanding camera. Buying an R5ii would be wasteful for me. There's just not that much new that would be useful for me. Your mileage may vary.

I will upgrade in Winter Cashback 2025/26 until this, i still happy with my R6MKII. Thanks for the Video, greetings from Germany.

Not upgrading yet for reasons similar to yours. I am primarily a stills photographer (R5) and I have found it quite interesting that most (not all) reviewers enthusing about it are video shooters. I understand that as many of the benefits affect video rather than stills although there are improvements for stills such as improved AF, stacked sensor and reshooting capture etc but not yet convinced they are worth the cost of upgrade. That said I may upgrade at sometime in the future (assuming there is a supply!)

I do primarily stills shooting; landscape and wildlife. I'd love the new sensor and autofocus, especially for birds in flight, but just can't quite justify spending the big dollars to upgrade my R5 that I love. I think it's a serious camera upgrade, but a lot of the features I just wouldn't use. Like you, maybe down the road, after the backlog disappears and all the bugs are worked out there just might be a good deal to be had. I'm happy with the R5 for now.
@billmartin1663
@billmartin1663 2 месяца назад
Agreed. And we aren't promised that the AF will be better for birds in flight. (I'm eager to see an objective bird photographer's review.) The R3's stacked sensor is much faster than the R5ii's and even the R3 has issues with rolling shutter distortion for birds in flight. We will see. I pre-ordered 3 R5ii's. I have already cancelled two of those. I may keep my remaining order just to test the camera for myself.

@@jonathanfryer1319 yeah had the r6&r7 previously but ditched them for the r6ii and was thinking a crop stacked version of the r5 ii be great but the fact that the r5 ii has the upscaling ability and the benifit of full frame better low light capabilities surely that combination is going to be better than what a crop sensors going to produce so that’s pushing me to the r5ii

A perfect illustration of money management: if the original version is as good as the reviews claim, then it should be good enough now at a significantly lower price. You can go broke chasing technology. It would be great if Canon offered an R5vf version: video free, at a much lower price. Some of us don’t need/want video. Now that, would be innovation.

Metering and WB is supposed to be better on the Mark II - these are two areas in particular that I think Nikon has bested Canon in the past. I expect superior low noise - not just necessarily from the physical sensor itself but through the processing pipeline. Similarly DR may be improved. None of these reviews have really dived into those details, so I'm just going to rely on my own try out. The R5/5D line is arguably Canon's most important product segment and every generation is generally better than the last, so I doubt I'll be disappointed. The AF features alone will be nice to have and, frankly, I'd pay good money just to have the power switch on the R hand side like on the Mark II, which I think is much more ergonomic. I'm not a big video shooter, but I really like the idea of simultaneous video/stills functionality - that could make shooting video much more accessible than having to pick and choose.

The R5 30 minute limit is absurd and can be fixed by a firmware upgrade. But it will never happen.

CLOG 3 is 14+ stops but the original R5 only had a claimed 12. The R5 C has a claimed 13. The R5 II has a claimed 16+ but only in 4K fine with CLOG 2. I have not seen the dynamic range in 8K mentioned.
@ViciousXUSMC
@ViciousXUSMC 2 месяца назад
Since 4k fine is down sampled 8k it should be the same. The 8k has to be processed before 4k footage can even exist.

@@ViciousXUSMC No, it isn't. Oversampling increases dynamic range.
@ViciousXUSMC
@ViciousXUSMC 2 месяца назад
@@robertm3951 Id put money on it that your wrong. You can't create from something that is not there. You can always reduce, not add. That's exactly what you're doing your reducing the resolution, you can't magically add dynamic range. I think you may are confused with pixel binning and how that changes light sensitivity. Oversampling is not from binning and binning still doesn't change dynamic range it's more an ISO performance tech. If the camera has a hardware restriction because it can't handle the processing requirements for a larger bit rate file, that's an artificial restriction. Has nothing to do with oversampling.
@robertm3951
@robertm3951 2 месяца назад
@@ViciousXUSMC Look at the tests from CineD. Oversample always has more dynamic range. Do not take my word for it. Over-sampling removes noise.
@ViciousXUSMC
@ViciousXUSMC 2 месяца назад
@@robertm3951 Thanks I'll use my own tests since I know that I'm doing and I'm a technical person not a sponsored RU-vidr. My R5C I have the same dynamic range at 8k and 4k because I mix the footage with the exact same settings and get exactly the same dynamic range. I'll use 4k when I'm run and gun and 8k when on tripod to reframe in post to 4k and get fake jib movements. Not all these people are as smart as you give them credit for. Learn to learn for yourself and not be spoon fed information from others without any actual understanding of what your "learning". I'm talking first hand knowledge and actually understand the tech as an engineer, not just a sounding board for someone else's opinion.

Canon fanboys simping for Canon. R5II has the slowest sensor readout speed of any stacked camera on the market. No cross type AF. No built in GPS. Has a smart hotshoe too (with potential water ingress point requiring the usage of the AD-E1. Eye control is a gimmick. Oh and a shit upgrade to the EVF. I don’t give 2 fucks about video shit.
