Jan your R5 content is the best I’ve seen, anywhere. Everything in one place. Amazing. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to put this video together. If you are not a Canon ambassador I don’t know what that term means.
This is the benchmark for help videos on RU-vid! Your explanations are clear, concise and easy to follow and your content is super helpful. I will now watch your video on camera settings. Thank you. 👏
Jan, this is a great help. I had no custom settings, so this will be very helpful. Additionally, I didn't like the technique required to switch between video and still. Now, it's much easier and quicker. Thank you.
OMG! Auto Update Settings. Thank you, thank you, thank you. That drove me crazy whenever I used the custom programs. I tried to remember to manually save my custom setup whenever I made adjustments in the field. I can’t count the number of times I missed great shots due to forgetting or fiddling with camera settings during action. Great advice on everything else too. Very informative, I will now adjust my camera settings.
I just want to say thank you. I spent a really long time going through different videos to help me understand my camera, and your teaching style was exactly what I was looking for.
Super useful video Jan! Nice tip for the 4th custom mode! Another way to re-focus in video is to use the touch & drag AF (moving thumb on the screen while looking through the viewfinder)
No one at my work or any other video has been able to answer my question. But you just answered it. Deactivating C-LOG and shooting in "jpeg" is sort of the equivalence of S-cinetone on Sony
Fantastic video and perfect timing. I was looking just yesterday for a video that talked about setup for video of birds and people in the R5. I watched another guy's video but prefer the settings you shared today since that is already how I had it set up, except that I will change the Mfn button to switch between photo and video now.
Great video and your setup and explanations have made it so much easier than reading the manual. I've now setup my R5 to use video which I've not bothered with before. I've done some test recordings and it all works just as you said. I love how easy it is to switch now between still and movie.
Thanks for sharing these valuable tips and tricks. I also find the My Menu window page really usefull where you can set your most commonly used function and always have My Menu open by default when I press the Menu button.
Jan - thanks for a great and informative video. I've had this bookmarked for some weeks, but finally had time to watch it tonight in preparation for a couple of videos in the next week or so. Thanks again!
Great video Jan. One custom button that I have set up is to boost screen to full brightness temporarily and then press again it goes back to the previous setting. I usually use a mid range screen brightness to conserve battery and also if you leave it on auto or full brightness it can be confusing with exposure in low light. I use the button on the front near lens Mount for this.
Thank you Jan, for saving me a lot of time. For my work I will surely find some personal tweaks that fit me better, but I will base my adjustments on your settings! Great knowledge explained in a great way!!
Hi Jan, I’ve commented on this video before, but wanted to say thank you again - it remains valuable! Have any of the suggestions you make in this video changed over time or is this still your go to? Also, please can you make an “Exposing and grading CLOG3 for dummies” video? There are quite a clog3 videos on YT, but no good ones focussed on wildlife (that I have found).
Wow Jan, there’s a lot of information in this video. Definitely worth watching more than once so I’ve added it in my watch later R5 settings file. With the 8k video, what sort of time are we looking at before the overheating issue starts? Thanks for sharing again Jan. Stay safe 🇦🇺
Depends on a lot of factors like outside weather, but could be less than 10min depending on how it is recorded and how hot it is. What causes the overheating is the EVF and rear display running
OK, One more: I got through your video. Very helpful, especially for someone (like me) with little video knowledge. Just past half-way through your video, it sounds like you try to talk us out of using Canon Log settings (flat look to video and more processing). However, towards the end when you describe setting up the Custom Shooting Modes 1-3 for video, you chose Canon Log 3. Do you personally prefer to use that format despite the drawbacks that you point out? If that's the case, I would be fine without the Canon Log setting, but just wanted to double check. Thanks again for all the great info and taking the time to respond to questions.
@@jan_wegener Was going to ask the same question - thanks Milo. At this time and for me I think it would be advantageous to have an external recorder, for example, Ninja V, if I am using C Log which is the point I think you make in the video. I am not confident about getting good exposure when I am shooting in C Log - it is all so dull-looking. I don't have an external recorder and have used the neutral picture style with good results. Do you use an external recorder Jan in any of your shoots and if so which one? Thanks for a great video. Outstanding content!
Fantastic! I don't shoot much video but I followed your video and it was really helpful to set it up. One thing, you did not mention, and which I was searching for originally - what is the impact of electronic shutter mode vs. mechanical shutter in video mode? Is there a difference? You didn't mention anything except "set your shutter speed to 1/50th, double the frame rate. Also, I assume that's the PAL setting, i.e., 25fps, as the NTSC only allows 24fps. You mentioned some difference earlier, but in the set up section, you only mentioned 25fps which I didn't have the option for... Thanks! Great stuff!
Jan than you for your wonderful videos I wondered if it would be possible to get you to write down each step. The customising of button is the one I cannot get. I get the first one but the focus ing steps are just a bit fast for me and when I pause your video a lot to make sure I have these set up correctly I just cannot make out the star alignment and the task you have given it. Hope this does not sound like rubbish. I love your presentation no bullshit no wasting time just straight into process. If you have a print or e-book I would be quite happy to pay Thank you Sue Shepherd New Zealand.
Thank you very much for this very informative video, Jan! I use my R5 mainly for wild bird photography but lately, I started taking videos. What movie recording quality would you recommend if I want to grab high quality stills from a video? Thank you very much!
Glad it was helpful! Grabbing stills from video is a nice idea but doesn’t work that well in theory unless you are using shutter speeds that are way too high for nice video
Thank you for this very informative video. Jan, will you be taking a look at the R5 vs R5C and sharing your thoughts and insights? Which would you choose: R5 or R5C? How strong do you feel that Canon is the King (more compelling than Sony or others) as the top hybrid photo and video camera? Trying to decide the best move up from Canon DSLR world… Thank you for all you do!
The way Canon has separated video and photo in the R5c doesn't work for me, so I don't think I will get one. Also no eye tracking in video mode for birds is pretty painful. R5 has the best ergonomics (button design & usability) and menu for video by a mile. Sony is good, but their image stabilisation really lets them down for handheld video. Nikon Z9 was very good for video and has internal Pro Res recording, which is great
4th CUSTOM Function Button...AWESOME idea..clever man you are 💪😉👍 Also the Custom Shooting Modes C1-C3 Auto-UPDATE that will help A LOT. Great work Jan
Hi Jan, I upgraded to an EOS R5 and have been using your settings for photography. Coming from a 7D MkII and 5Ds, the learning curve is enormous but I find your videos very helpful, thanks heaps. In October I am going to the Warbirds 2024 at Temora and will be also using the video function on the R5, also new to me as I'm a photos guy. Anyway, My R5 has OS 1.9 installed. In the AF menu the SUBJECT TO DETECT has four options; PEOPLE, ANIMALS, VEHICLES, NONE/OFF for both still and video, which option would you suggest for an airshow? I'm assuming your bird photography settings will be good for aircraft show also. Once again great stuff, cheers.
This will be HUGELY useful when I eventually get my new R5! It looks like I will need to replay this on slowmo to follow all the settings changes, as you obviously know the R5 like the back of your hand! Very many thanks for your support. I am so pleased I came across your channel when searching for R5 information. Definitely worth keeping subscribed.
Maybe I've already asked you this and forgot, but why not using crazy high shutter speeds like 1/4000 instead of closing the aperture in video? I don't need motion blur with birds
Hi, I was looking at purchasing your setup guide for the R6 but I see that you only have one for the R5. Could this guide be used for the R6 as well? Thank you!
I had an interesting phenomenon with this setup on my Canon R5. I set it up exactly like your set up in the video and my camera would fail to turn on about 60% of the time unless I took the batteries out and put them back in and I haven't had a single freeze up since the 1.5.2 update. I cleared the custom settings and I was back to normal. turned it on and off 50 times with no problem. I put the settings back and got the same result so I called Canon USA and reported that. Not sure which of those settings are triggering that in my camera But I suspect it's the auto update enabled because that's really the biggest change from my previous settings.
Hi Jan - thanks so much for all your fantastic content- I have a question for you which I hope you can help with- I have been trying to film wildlife with my r5 - mainly barn owls out hunting- however the movie servo struggles to keep up & keeps losing focus - any tips would be of great help - also is there any difference between movie servo & gaining eye autofocus by pressing the af-on button (other than having to press a button of course)
Hi Scott, I'm not Jan but I'm having a similar experience as you shooting wildlife. From some videos I have seen, the Canon camera's from around that time have this kind of unreliable servo AF tracking when other things enter the frame. Or even whatever the camera thinks are things, like shadows, background shapes etc. The latests models have "subject only AF" which is supposed to reduce this effect. Though far from a solution, here is how I try to deal with it at the moment: I have servo AF with subject tracking enabled, but I also have an easy to assign button set to pause Servo AF. I focus on my subject as always. However, when things get hectic I pause servo AF. You will still see the AF box and it will still track, but it will be grey and it won't be adjusting focus. When the camera loses tracking, that box will disappear or change to the wrong subject. But your focus is locked. Once your (grey) box finds your subject again you can do 2 things. Press the assigned Pause Servo AF button again, and tracking AF will continue (the box will turn white again). However when the situation remains hectic for the autofocus I simply press the autofocus button instead. The camera will focus on the box, and then when you release the AF is paused again (so it won't change focus to the wrong thing again). So it kind of becomes this one-shot autofocus technique with tracking. Nowadays I just try to look at the situation and decide whether to trust tracking servo AF, or pause it and keep pushing the AF button whenever that box finds my subject.
@@rudyvanos - thanks for the info, much appreciated & will give that a try, but I presume if I am filming an owl flying towards me, if I pause the AF, the owl will almost immediately become out of focus?
@@scottzorro Yes that's true, and seems like a different issue. One thing you could try is sometimes still push the autofocus button during servo AF to give it a push.
Hi Jan, thanks for this video and for explaining the video settings on the R5 so clearly. I am a stills photographer but have always wanted to have the option for short video clips on occasion, but the complex menus and various shooting modes have baffled me in the past. I love the way your videos explain the various settings on the R5. Just a quick question, what video software would you recommend for a beginner? Thanks
Thanks Jan great tips. I have similar set up for my vlogging with the R5 allowing me to go from stills to either 4K 25fps or 4K 100 fps just with one click. There are some additional things in your video I will be sure to check out. Cheers Keith
Hi Jan, thanks as always for your indepth and helpful videos - I'm struggling with shooting video through the EVF, there's a noticable stutter when panning. I have this exact same problem with my Z50 and haven't been able to fix it despite many days searching for answers on the net. All setting options have been exhausted, but am I missing one key setting?
@@jan_wegener thanks for the reply, the stutter is whilst shooting video and using the EVF. Doesn't seem to matter what EVF frame rate is used, or which video setting is used, panning the screen to shoot moving wildlife or aircraft causes the stuttering screen. I get that panning too fast can do this, but it is only through the EVF and that's really the only way to shoot moving things with a large lens!
Great video as usual. A couple things that I never considered that you talked about. 1- set up C3 and saving once you see what your conditions are for each shoot. That should have been obvious but I overlooked it. 2- Auto update settings. I always thought I would never want that enabled but your explanation made me realize I was missing an important feature. 3- The 4th mode trick is brilliant.
Hey there...when I move my R5 Lil fast during video shoot it starts hunting focus and loose focus from character....no distractions in frame only character...AF is servo with face and eye tracking enabled..fast sensitivity
Hi Jan, I dont know how many times I have seen this great video before. Nevertheless, because I skrew up the settings of my R5 I was review it one more time. However I got stuked on first step: AF menu 1 - Is it me or menus have changed after last firmware upgrade and options such as "Movie Servo AF" is no longer available,; instead now is "Continuous AF"? Any assistance would be very welcome.
Great video, Jan! I tried to use your setting and stored them in C3. Included screen info setting. When in photomode and I push the recordbutton, everything seems to be correct, but the histogram dissapear. I toggle through with the infobutton, with no luck. Any idea what I missed?
@@jan_wegener Thanks for quick respons! Yes, its strange. If I go manually to video, and choose C3, I have the histogram, so it should turn up when pushing recordbutton in photomode.
Great video, very helpful! I set my M-Fn as described in your video, but it switches to MovieM, not Movie Custom3. I thought the default was Movie Custom3?
Jan thank you very much for the great instructional video, your style, explanations and the use of good close ups of the R5 menu screens really helps me understand the camera. There's a lot to learn and to take in especially for video which, for me is a new language but I'm diving right in. You are my go to person for the R5 so keep up the good work.
why in the heck they put the customize function buttons in the exposure and bracketing menu and not in the settings menu. Canon really sucks in their menu.. Thought sony was bad but canon is worse.. I have to search on the net to find option because I always forget where they are located.
great video, thank you!! One question, you said that you use iso 800, wide open on lens and 1/50 shutter speed ....what if these settings are too bright and don't match the exposure?? Do you use ND filters? Also if you had same ISO and slowmo, you'd go to 1/200 shutter speed with same 800 ISO and wide open on the lens....that'd make your exposure quite dark in comparison with the normal mode at ISO 800, wide open and 1/50 shutter speed. I can't think of any other solution other than an ND filter, but if you have some other trickery, I'd love to know. Thanks again, I watch all your vids
Yes you will have to adjust the ISO every time and either increase shutter speed or use ND filters as well. The 800 I just set when I saved that mode initially. On a given day I change it and save it to whatever I need
Jan, at 6:12 you start to set up the first AF menu. After "Eye detection" is "Continuous AF" not "Movie Servo AF". Currently have firmware Ver1.8.1 What am I doing wrong?
Another well done video with great information. I believe you have said in other videos that you use DaVinci Resolve for processing. Do you know if the studio version is needed to process Canon Log files or is the free version, which I have, acceptable? Thanks.
Hello Jan, I totally get lost when you reach the part about setting the Shutter speed. How do you set this in the custom functions?. You mention having the lens wide open? what do you mean by that ?. Once I connect the lens to the body I cannot alter any values in the menu. Kindly explain the steps I seem miss. I have watched this video multiple times and simply cannot figure those 2 points.
Fantastic video Jan! Can't wait to give this a try. When I go into the Movie re.Size menu I don't have 25 FPS available. Just 29.97P 24.00P and 23.98P. how would I get the 25.00P option?
Yes, my cam is set to PAL. Yours to NTSC, so you have different speeds available. Depending where you live one or the other will be better when shooting indoors, because it stops the lights from flickering in the video
correct me if i am mistaken, but is not youtube 30/60 frames? I only record in 30 or 60 frames unless doing high speed or timelapse. this works very well for me. and the video doesnt need converting by youtube.
@@jadefinchscene5644 If I film at 25fps, then changing it to 30fps is pretty easy and won't look funny. It's only bad if you have to drop frame like if I was filming at 50fps and wanted to render it in 30fps
@@jan_wegener yeah adjusting a few frames in post isn't too bad, but a lot of frames is very noticeable. I just wasn't thinking about flickering in other places than where i am. thank you for the response. note if you needed to film at 50 you could jump to 60 as YT does support that.
Thanks for sharing your video settings Jan. In the Yellow menu 5, there is "Save/load cam settings on card" option which has been very useful. I save my settings to a dedicated SD card every time I make changes to my custom settings, that way in case something changes by accident, I can always go back and restore quickly. I really appreciate the work you do. Thank you.
Is ISO 100 worse than ISO 800 in standard mode (not log)? And you said that you turn on the Lens electronic MF so you can manually focus while you have Servo AF enabled. Doesn't that damage the lens? I always avoid to manually focus whilst pressing the AF button in photo mode, isn't it for video the same? The 600mm f4 makes not so pleasant sounds when doing that... Sorry for spamming you, but you really help me.
No, for normal mode ISO 100 is best I don't think it would be available if it damaged anything and something you just have to use MF to help the camera
@@jan_wegener Yeah, but isn't it the same as with Continuous AF in photo mode (which I haven't enabled, of course)? Many people say that with that enabled, you shouldn't manually focus at the same time
Hello, Im back I finally bought R5 and after customizing dials for video and other settings it seems like a very good camera. I use rf/ef adapter and 50mm 1.2 and autofocus is kkinda crappy in video mode. It's set to no priority tracking. I have only used one lens, after I test my other lenses I will edit the post. PS: I only have EF lenses, maybe video AF is better with RF? Thanks Wegener, cheers
