why compare an a7RIII with the R5 when there's an A7RIV?????? also if you make adjustments to the canon, make adjustments to the Sony. Also if the colours bother, manually white balance on site. EASY. Disappointed with this review. Heavily favouring a canon when not warranted. And ironically still struggled to give it props against an old Sony A7RIII
A7RIII is about the same megapixels and still has a monster sensor plus I don’t own the R4 Look at the settings. They are same but Canon was a tad darker. I had to slightly bump it to match. Doesn’t make a difference in the real world. The green tint doesn’t change with a white balance adjustment. It just a characteristic when shooting high contrast scenes. Maaaan, I’m a sony shooter lol I have a sony camera on my merch. I’m giving credit where credit is due 👍
@@MannyOrtiz Listen bro, you are the original. I have an a7iii after watching all those original shoots way back. I will always have love for Manny and if i'm honest i've not had the level of green in shot you have using a grey card. I'm not saying the green isn't there but the language of the review was negative towards the sony when it was unwarranted as these are easily corrected in post and i feel you should have made it V clear that you were reviewing a brand new canon against an OLD tech sony. I have not tested the R5 so i cannot give an opinion i'm just saying it was weighted heavily in canons favour with language and tone. Also i dont feel you even said about the canon being darker on the same settings. Not that that's even that important but i feel if you would mention minor things about sony. you should about the canon too. The reality is we are now finally in an era where both RIV and R5 essentially can produce a more similar image and with post processing be basically identical now. But in terms of Dynamic range. I'm pretty sure the Sony A7RIV would edge it........ and not overheat 😂😂😂😂😂😂 hashtag angry sony fan boy Still love you Manny. I look forward to another OCF lighting tutorial/BTS video
Dude. You got triggered 😤 way too much. Manny is the reason I switched to Sony A7Riii over a Canon from Nikon D850. Relax a bit and enjoy the vids. Also Mac, which gimbal do you think would go well along with an A7Riii & Sigma 85mm / 24mm 1.4 Art lenses. Am getting into video now and found no review of such. The sigma lenses are quite heavy and I fear that calibration / balance might be off.
@@martinmac6563 You go tell us Mac,because you dont want no EasyBake oven, you want a camera you can use over 40 minutes..hehehehehe..It's that Sony love,i guess, from the company that was not a camera company, came up,innovated mirrorless, and went to Number one..Canon marches on as well, with their 1DXiii,which does not cook dinner...
I love Manny for keeping the content real, as he is the only one on internet to compare R5 with a camera which is under same bodyweight category. respect!
The flip rear touch screen on the Canon is so useful and I hope Sony will improve that on their still cameras soon. A7s3 showed that it's possible. Knowing and using the dynamic range to it's limit on the camera is very practical for working photographers, especially shooting a model. The time you save on carrying and setting up flashes/reflectors maybe enough to shoot another look or location. Not every working photographer has time or assistants and a crew to setup up every shot. Nice work Manny, I always respect your true honest opinion and how you share your first hand experience.
This video is 🔥 ! Dynamic range is super important. The 5DIV dynamic range was more than enough for anything I ever shot (lots of shadow pulling) but the EOS-R suffered in that area with shadow pattern noise, colour shifts and some banding. I've played with the R5 files and yeah, the dynamic range is now the best of any camera I've ever used for photo, and now with the video overheating issue being mostly remedied with the new firmwares, even better. . In this day and age there is no reason to be brand jumping anymore.
I use a 5d mark iv... And was inclined towards buying sony a7riv but now with canon launching r5 I'm confused between both... I do outdoor potraits... Also would like to know if A7 RIII or canon R6 could do the same job so I could save some money and buy a better lens... Would be great if yiu can suggest?
it's true, I have both and I also find out that yellow/green are different. I hate those color on my eos R. they share the same sensor but they are not similar to me. Do you think that the colors of the R5 are more similar to the 5d mark iv than the eos R?
@@adityathakkar9014 If your already invested with Canon glass then the answer is obvious -stay with Canon. But if your not then my advise is rent the A7r3 and use it Sony lenses. Do lots of comparison with photos and use the camera extensively to make sure you like Sony's ergonomics, screen navigation etc. A lot more of your creativity can be harnessed if you also like the camera your using. So yeah rent the Sony. That's what i did and ended up staying with Canon.
Great video Manny! It's hilarious when people claim, 'oh, I just get it right in camera'. These are people who don't even know what dynamic range is. I always ask them, 'which part of the scene did you correctly expose in camera? At a given aperture/ISO if you meter off the model you get one shutter speed, meter off the sky you get a much higher shutter speed, meter off the shadows a slower shutter speed. You can only set one shutter speed, which one did you use? Do you lift shadows in post or recover highlights? You do?! Then you're relying on adequate dynamic range to successfully do so'. Anyone who claims they get it right in camera probably has blown out highlights and/or lost shadow details and doesn't even realise it.
Or they carry around flashes and strobes everywhere (like Jason Lanier), which can be annoying, and the results often don't look as good as just recovering shadows later. I much prefer the more natural look that Manny and Irene get with their work (even when Manny uses a flash it still looks natural) .
Depending on what you do and your skills, you can get it right in camera..That's exactly how much of photography was done, and now we have the benefit of making changes with a computer/software...I shot last weekend in the street and the lighting alone killed all of the shots,so I would have had to use a computer, and software to make them decent.
It’s great working with a model like this who knows what she’s doing. Most of my photo shoots are families and weddings, so I primarily work with non-models. All beautiful people, but not models. The few times I’ve worked with a model, like the person in this video, it’s amazing. They hit their marks, know how to stand and position their body in all the right angles. Such body awareness to know how to stand so perfectly for the camera is hard to do, it’s a trained skill. It’s night and day. I worked with this one model who always took my focal length into consideration because she was keeping the compression of the lens in mind and based that on how she posed. Amazing. Being a good model, like the person in this video, is very hard work.
Dynamic range is king. I was blown away when going from Canon to Sony right when the A7iii came out. Thank you for shedding some light on this subject. Being able to manipulate the light in your images is so important.
It's very simple. You have to know your camera first. You can't shoot every camera the same way. Some sensors have more DR below mid gray , some have more above mid gray, so you have to learn to expose for your subject, and your sensor, if you want to maximize dynamic range.
True. The R5 seems to have added a LOT of dynamic range in the shadows, with a bit less in the highlights (according to some). Some cameras like the Fuji medium format have very good highlight dynamic range (with a bit less in the shadows).
I've come to the decision that next spring I will likely pop for a R5 along with a RF24-70 f2.8 and the RF100-500 to get started. I too am mightily impressed with the camera, it's functions and color of course. I've been a Sony guy for years but am ready to make the switch after next tax season. I began my career over 20 years ago with Canon and am finally returning.
Finally got my R5! Pre-ordered it 8 minutes (7:08AM PST) from BH... thought about cancelling it, until I realized that I'm a photographer first, then experimental videographer. Plus, now with all the updates, video will be in my court as well too! And the 70C in a couple of days....
In the alleyway, the Sony and Canon indeed look "almost identical" [6:09]. Yet the Canon retains far more detail within the highlights-the two yellow, luminous spheres-and there's no attempt to recover the Sony's lost detail.
Yes, Sony looks blown at times before process, but it does recover very good. I really like the Canon files for the color and feel like throwing my Sony at a wall for its everything other than the files. Other day my finger hit the lens release and OFF IT WENT! to the floor!! Stupid design. How do you put a lens release button on a small body with ergo issues already RIGHT where the shutter hand and fingers rest??!! Insane. Then you got the menus, then the electronics, then the sensor dust, then the SD card door, screen.....But, the R5 is not priced for a Still shooter, its priced for both video and still. They should have made the R6 with 8K video strong and charged more for that and lower the R5 without top video features. Satisfy both buyers, and if you need both, you would be able to afford both. I can see Canon do a R5M2 as a still forward model in a couple years perhaps.
@@philindeblanc, as to highlight recovery, I meant that Manny failed to objectively compare. With Sony, I've likewise had problems with sensor dust. At $3900, the R5 is priced low, its 8K video virtually included free.
Between the two I find myself always liking the shots from the canon as the colour seems nicer to me. The green in the Sony is really off, side be side.
You are so right about the importance of dynamic range. It is even more true if you shoot landscapes. Many times with moving water, you cannot use exposure bracketing. Capturing the full range of light with one exposure is magic.
I just got my R5 in last Friday... 2 months on Pre-Order!! I also shoot on the move, no external lights - just natural light. Also depend on dynamic range to help in situations of shadows and harsh light. Great video!
The crazy thing is Canon did this in one generation from R to R5/6. I picked up the R with the RF 50/85 and RF 15-35/70-200. The R5 is in another league coming from the R. Loving Canon. They're back in the game!
Ironically I went with Fuji and I don’t regret it. I personally don’t need an over specced camera to get the job done. If the job requires it I’ll rent it. But in most cases XT3 and Fuji lenses is enough for me. Also by the comments the subject is the most important matter. Random comment coming from a previous A7RIII shooter...
I know so many photographers who jumped to the Fuji line because it's just unbelievable what you get with their ompact sensor. At the end of the day, you just need to know the limits.
Y’all simping over the model in the comments lmao, this mans wife is better looking than any model that’s ever been featured on the channel, she got absolutely nothing to worry about. 👍🏻
Manny ALWAYS coming through with that FIRE!!!!!! Trust me I've been waiting fo rthis EXACT video ever since the announcement! thanks a bunch man! I need to save up some money and hopefully I can get a new R5/6
“The lines bro the lines, look at that autofocus omg...” yeah i was thinkin the same thing ;) fr tho appreciate the comparison, would love to see you work with an R6 and see how much the MP makes a difference in your real world experience and workflow.
Manny, THANK YOU for highlighting the DR!! So many reviewers just do not cover that in detail and it's VERY important for my style. I, like you, left Canon (5D MKIII), but for the Nikon D810 which at the time (and still today) has mind-blowing DR. I have been using Nikon for stills and Canon APSC for video for years - waiting...and waiting...and waiting for either Canon to up their DR game or Nikon to develop usable video. Now the Z8/9 is here, but also the R5 has just recently dropped $500 in price. I think I'm heading back to Canon thanks to seeing that the DR levels have FINALLY gotten to a usable level for my needs. Great work!!
Greetings, thank you for the amazing review on the R5. I just invested on the R5 with a 100-500mm lens for wildlife photography. But i still use my legacy lenses that I use on my 7D with the adapter and they work just as amazingly. Thank you for keeping yopur reviews in a manner most people will understand. Oh...is that Chi Town?
Great video! I’m like you and need the flexibility. I left Canon for Sony years ago and now just left Sony for the Canon R6. I’m in love. Canon finally caught up.
Uh, great model! I agree Manny. I find photographers that only shot jpgs...old fashion people... and I kinda respect their POV. But these days with this technology is so much easier to focus on subject and the story rather than technical aspects of the camera. Thanks for sharing!
My last Canon camera was a 5dMIV and I had same kind of issues about dynamic range and ISO performance, then I switched to Sony and I don't have these issues anymore also improving the time i spend editing... but hey this r5 seems phenomenal. I'm glad Canon finally is there!
Catching up on Manny videos. I believe that this is the most beautiful model I've ever seen in one of your videos. Almost makes we want to move back to Chicago...ALMOST. Thanks for the review. I've been a Canon shooter for over 30 years and I'm really excited about this camera. I feel that they are starting to listen again.
Yo just wanna say I bought one of your preset packs recently and they're head & shoulders above all the other one's I've ever bought. Worth every penny, really appreciate the quality man
The problem here with colours is Lightroom which is notorious for reproducing camera colours incorrectly because it doesn't have the manufarcturer's camera ICC profiles so it basically guesses those colours for every camera instead of accuratelly reproducing it, that's why you see greens in sony images because it incorrectly translate those colours. Have you ever tried Capture one? Which has those accurate Camera ICC colour profiles that manufacturers used in camera so it reproduces them as intended instead of guessing them as in Lightroom. Try and you will see how much better those sony colours look.
nice video - beautiful photos - nor worried about the comparison so much, but we did just upgrade to the R5 from 5DIV and it was cool to see you show off what we can expect from it. and props to your models - as you say, they know what they are doing!
I appreciate the video and the information but just like your love for your A7 III keeps you there , I've yet to have any issue with my EOS R . Like you said everyone has a different style and their mileage may vary but I appreciate the honest comments and videos. I can tell you are fond of the R5 even through your love for sony that's the reaction of a photographer not a fan boy. So thank you for the content and I can't wait for what else is to come!
I used the 5DmkIII and had exactly the same dynamic range and noise issues, frustrated the shit out of me. Always had to sharpen in post that aggravated the situation. It was a sad day when eventually I dumped all my Canon equipment, including those delicious lenses, and went the Fuji route, and I'm a lot happier. BUT! All of a sudden Canon comes up with the ultimate instrument, I cannot believe my eyes! I could kill for it!! And the eye autofocus brings tears to my eyes. Canon, how could you?? (wait until now!). Thanks for great videos. Have to agree, better to stay far away from this model and use long focal length!
@Manny Ortiz, as amazing as Canon is I don’t think I could ever afford the glass it deserves for it. I shoot Sony and yes-Sony glass is expensive too, but not as much as canon. At the end of the day-just shoot, we are all here for the love of photography right?! Awesome video again Manny!
@@westernpigeon its not , Canon R5 is currently by far the best Still /hybrid Camera in the world , go and watch the review of Christopher Frost and there are many comparison reviews of Canon R5 and Sony A7R4 .. Canon R5 just blew Sony A7R4 away in each of them .. then RF lenses are pure magic , Canon even has a holy trinity of R5 lenses , they will keep adding lenses in this series , gmaster lenses are nowhere near RF lenses
libin thomas yet, it is. i agrée, R5 is probably the best hybrid, but if you need video, take the a7siii and if you need photography, take the a7r4. no doubt sony has something up their sleeve with the a74. lmao you’ve never even tried gmaster lenses i bet. canon feeds it’s users mediocre products and you guys go crazy. to each their own.

Hi Manny Thank you for your transparency .your working it ,many negative comments are said because they are always negative your right on when you said many people don'tt agree.Love tour passion .From one Ortiz in Southern Cal great job Manny.
So if I am an hobbiest photographer but looking to get into more of a small business photography, doing portraits maybe weddings? what camera would you recommend on starting out? Saying there’s only a $2500 budget. I’ve used Canon and Nikon. But now this video has me thinking Sony?
Subbed. Great vid. I'm a wedding photographer and I don't care about lab tests and pixel peeps. Being a canon shooter for about 10 years, I'm happy to see the jump in dynamic range. Truth is, as hard as anyone tries on a wedding day, you will over or under expose. It's inevitible. I got the r6 over the R5 as its perfect for my needs and R5 is overkill. But both are incredible cameras.
yep Sony/Nikon rule the recovery camp (until now), but any Canon even the old ones has better results (output color and tone quality in particular) when the situation lighting is thought out shooting people.
caution with DR : the recovery of highlight and shadows do not look the same, depending on the reason why you'll want to recover those (either for skin, cloth, or sky) you'll find that for sky it's better to underexpose and for skin to overexpose, at least on Canon 6D2. Because of the color and taste of those shadow or highlight areas. (I mean it can look better than the well exposed shot) When you recover a highlight it looks more flat so it's great for skin, when you recover shadows then highlight look more dynamic and contrasty and saturated (much better for skies), overall even if it's sad thant 6D2 has bad DR, I've never found a situation where I was frustrated, except if i did a bad job myself, I won't blame the device : it's on me.
Was waiting for your comparison video. You are the reason I changed to Sony over Canon from Nikon D850. I got an A7Riii and love it. I love your videos because it’s unbiased and we feel and understand what you teach us. Anyways for me you and Diana are my mentor and I wish you the best in life. If you ever visit Maldives do hit me up. Would be a dream to shoot alongside Manny.
Thank you so much Manny for the informative and helpful comparative camera review! Just may I ask, what kind of adopter you've used to utilize canon lens on Sony camera (2':35")? Thank you again and good luck!
Great points regarding dynamic range. I am not surprised that Canon finally caught up. When this pandemic goes away, I hope you come out to the SF Bay Area again sometime and do a mini-workshop or something like that. It was fun meeting you, Diana, and Scott Robert Lim at the Samy's Camera SF event. BTW.. Still love the Addicted shirt I got! :-)
Great to see this video after considering the EOS R & A7R3 for nature photography after some good pricing on both for boxing week. I am a Canon shooter, but have been struggling as I get more into bird photography and trying to recover detail for exposure correction, and cropping in. I also use Lightroom for my workflow. My challenge is using all my EF mount glass on E mount. I'm going to try the Metabones V EF-E and cross my fingers. I would like to use the EOS R5, but in Canada it is more than double the A7R3.
I like to get it right "in the camera" also, but you made a great comment, where you set up your photograph for success, which I think is a very important distinction to make.
I am a loyal Canon shooter for photo's and I will never abandon Canon. With the Eos R5 Canon shows the world time after time they are on top when it comes to skintones (especially SOOC). Sony colours are simply not so pleasing (no matter how good the AF of Sony is). I shoot Hasselblad medium format and Canon files match the best with the Hasselblad files. The files I shot with Sony are VERY hard to grade and impossible to get exactly the same as Canon (even with the EOSHD luts). The colours of the Sony A7SIII look better now so we will see what Sony can do (I hope they will adapt Canon colours at some point or at least close to realistic skintones).
Bro... I have a Nikon D200 because my budget forced me to buy something just to pursue my passion regardless of my problems. I have downloaded Raw files from other camera manufacturer even from you on a video on a Nikon D800 vs Sony. It's the closest I can determine how far I have come in my photography career but for as long as I don't have high end equipment my clients will never see the results i can truly deliver.
Manny ....is there a big difference between the sony a6400 and sony a7iii ? does it worth the upgrade?:) pls let me know man thanks:) Ps.you are doing good job with those videos,i always press like before i press play:)
That is a great review. I appreciate you not being a fan boy and being honest in your videos. Also @Manny Ortiz, what system do you think is better at this moment? Canon R (5) + RF glass or Sony + GM glass?
Hi, Manny. I'd like to tell you terrible cases found in South Korea. Customers in Korea realized that R5, R6 and even R have burned out around the sensor. At the first time, I couldn't beilieve there are so many cases in this short period. It's hard to tell the percentage, but I could find more than dozens of cases that have burned spot around the sensor. I'm really curious why there is no issue in other countries, but it is considered as serious problem here. If you want to know, I'm going to make simple report to you by mail.
Maybe it is only me but ... well the A7R3 is nearly 3 years old (release OCT 2017)! well done canon catching up after 3 Years... don't get me wrong... the R5 is a good camera but I think its not worth the hype... Tested the R6 vs my a7iii ...I think the a7iii performed so much better than the R6 ...
Can't imagine why anyone wouldn't care about DR. Manny, if you get a chance can you look at a comparison of the 135mm f/1.8 v 200mm f/2? I can't find one and I think that's a comparison a lot of people would be interested in.
Glad you’re real all the time. I have the eos RP and totally was aware of the lack of dynamic range... and sometimes I wish I could pull back detail from harsh sunlight... but I couldn’t afford an a7iii 😭😭😭😭
Excellent video, glad I came across this video, I shoot 70D and avoided going Sony and waited out ... Seems R6 is the way to go for me ;) Would love to see some night shots of R6 and R5 and what you can recover from them
