Canon R5C | 120p 3K RAW vs 4K XF-AVC

A collection of SLOW MOTION shots filmed on the new Canon EOS R5 C at 120fps in 3K RAW, 4K XF-AVC, and even some 2K XF-AVC which also holds up amazingly well. The Canon R5C is continuing to impress me when I get to play with the footage. The 4K 120p slow mo has been a bit criticized for being soft and no that great but I was really happy with most of the shot results. The 3K RAW definitely had a more noise, but I think it is just more sensitive to any shots that might get underexposed. I am still trying to determine which mode I prefer better but this testing got me WAY closer to the conclusion I will inevitably arrive at.

Great video. What R5C 120fps setting would you use for shooting surf videos at a spot like Pipeline?

Thanks. I really think you will be fine either way but what i have found is I end up using the 4K XF-AVC because I can switch to it a quicker. I assigned it as a button on the camera so when I am filming in 4K XF-AVC, I can in a single button press, switch it to 120p. I set my shutter measurement to ANGLE / 180% so it automatically switches to what it should (double my frame rate) when I switch frame rates. That being said, if I was filming dedicated slo-mo footage and there is plenty of light out, I would lean toward using the 3K RAW.

Super 16 Crop 120fps in RAW HQ is far superior to 4k 120fps in XF-AVC. Yes its a tad noisier because you’re cropping into the sensor but the image quality improvement is worth it. Lower resolution but more actual resolved pixels. Scales beautifully on a 4k timeline.

Thank you for the test, awesome shots! The 3K RAW clips in the Super16mm crop looked a bit noisy in some places, it's probably the same as with the Fujifilm XT-4 240fps SlowMo, which you could really only use in perfect lighting conditions. I'm very curious about your final conclusion on the best slowmo settings!

The RAW was definitely noisier. I will be doing a follow up video to this one talking about my conclusions. There are pros and cons to both modes. I will say, I think I might be at fault on underexposing a few of the RAW shots. I had overexposed filming with the camera the week before and overcorrected myself on some of the stuff in this. BUT, it is more sensitive to noise. I am heavily leaning toward purchasing an external monitor for this camera. The rear LCD is just proving to be a bit too dark and small for bright days filming outdoors.

Thank you! Yes, it does have more noise. I found I under exposed a few of the shots and that is the cause for some of them, but not all. Will be doing a follow up video to this one talking about my findings along with pros and cons to each mode. Both RAW and XF-AVC with 120p seem to have their place.

if only it had custom modes so you could switch between shooting modes easily. SMH

You can assign a button as S&F to switch to super slo mo and out in an instant. But if you are wishing there was a a way to switch between Raw and XF-AVC in a single press without navigating to the menu, it can't be done.

@@AshvonChamier yeah, that's the problem is I shoot raw st most of the time so it's a pain in the butt
