Thank you for the video after all the DMs with you, I finally choose the R5C.. dare I say to future proof myself The experience so far is fun! This camera just makes things easy to shoot, and the fact that you can install your own LUT and shoot with it as an “assist” or baked make shoot even easier

BTW, you mentioned about the internal storage. One thing I love about how Canon is dealing with the storage is the ability to have raw in the CFB card and the XFAVC Intra on the SD card. I have a 2TB Angelbird CFB card. I use RAW in the CFB card as a backup (like if I need raw to fix something I have done in the shoot). When I am traveling I have my MB Pro Max and I use the SD card to edit since that's the material I will use. I love that. RAW in 1 and XFAVC in the other. :)

Dude let me tell you that you are fantastic at putting out videos. You have all the facts and your opinion is based on Experience. I think anyone who argues about opinions in the comments negates that fact. Almost every time you bring up a topic that I'm sure people have argued about, you have a nervous laugh. Great video Josh. Completely agree about the battery life and keeping it small. After using cameras like the Pocket 4K I don't want to go back to rigging cameras just to make them useable, we should be past that now. I love how the Sonys you can just grab out of the bag and start shooting.

Thanks for a fantastic video! Keep up the good work! So I have owned both cameras. Made the switch to Canon R5C because I am a commercial photographer turned filmmaker so the R5C is perfect for me in that way. The dual OS is a godsend when you switch between modes. However I do not agree with you when it comes to lens options. The EF range for Canon ECO system is wast. Also from what I can see the Sony comes very close to the big boy Venice when shooting RAW. You also get greater color separation from the A7SIII thanks to its 16BIT AD conversion. You can sort of spot it in your AF test where the leafs are about to blow out. There is a lot more color information on the Sony if you look closely. Again greate video and i love your channel!

Thanks! I would say that the leaves you are referring to was probably from me just slightly overexposing. These two camera are so similar in terms of image. It really comes down to proper exposure and color grading skills.

Hi, great comparison! I have both cameras and was thinking if I could use both in multicam set up. Seeing how well you matched the color, I think it is totally doable. Could you share how you match these two? Log profile and the lut used etc…. That would help me a lot.

I wouldn't want to use these two cameras as a multicam. It is kind of a pain to match the footage, but it can be done. I don't use any LUTs, I just grade them by hand and try to get them to match.

I think you're one of the most underrated camera youtubers out there. I used Sony for years (A7III, RIV, IV and SIII) and now been using the R5C for 4 months. The differences are there. The Sony's LCD was abysmal in comparison, it was really hard to get a realistic view with it. It truly was one of the attributes I disliked the Sony's alot. I'd like to think my eye is somewhat trained with these specific cameras and you can still identify which cam is which by the colors with a high propability. In real life use the AF of the Canon is not only slower but also more unpredictable. The less I talked to a Canon rep in a camera convention for closer to an hour and he told me (or at least I was left in the impression) that how the R5C AF works, basically not being snappy like we're used to with the mirrorless, is intentional and they have no intention to change that for anything that has the C in it. A would, not could issue. This is due to the fact that a snappy, photo like AF is not an attribute of interest towards the general user base of the cinema line based on their information from the users. If there is to be an AF its to mimic a manual pull rather than snapping on to target.

Other camera companies just add in controls for autofocus speed and sensitivity, giving the user the choice to change the performance and look of the autofocus. I agree, the Sony LCD screens need to get better. I always have little confidence when capturing images in a Sony but they look good when I get them in the computer. Great video. +1 on the Canon Lens OIS -- I don't even bother with the electronic stabilization. That R5C doesn't have IBIS is one of its biggest feature IMO, because IBIS is a stills features adapted for video that results in video footage that looks very amateurish IMO (all system, not just Canon w/ it's notorious wobble issue).

Can I use the external power setup (recommended by you) of my R6ii on the R5C? Thanks for making all these great R5C videos. I sold the R6ii because it was constantly overheating with my Ninja V. (I'm going to use the Ninja V with OS11 on my R5C.)

I have mixed feelings about my R5C. It's good, but battery life is such an annoying issue and the focus is worse then the R5. On the other hand the low light is great on it and shooting in 12,000 ISO was still usable (at a bar one time) since its down sampled.

on a 2k ultrawide monitor, I picked the a7S3 out in all the comparisons. Felt like it had greater detail in the image. Maybe that's thanks to the new GM II 24-70. Both looked great, but it's the difference I noticed.

Hi Josh! Did you use the R5C with the adaptor for EF lenses? If so, the AF still works in a reliable way?

I didn’t do extensive testing but I’ve found that AF performance of EF lenses on the RF mount cameras really depends on the lens itself. The more recently produced EF lenses work better.

Hey Josh, great video man! I know you mentioned in your video that the R5C's autofocus is only slightly worse than the A7S iii but in my day to day experience, owning both cameras, it seems like the A7S is way more reliable when it comes to autofocus in every type of lighting condition. Im sure the R5C will improve with updates but if the shoot required autofocus to be on point I couldn't see myself using the R5C with confidence. Maybe it's my copy of the R5C?

I agree that the autofocus is better on the A7S3. In well lit situations, they are pretty close though. I have become more careful about lighting in situations when using autofocus after using the C70 a bunch.

If the R5 II that's supposed to debut in April 2024, has all the features of the R5 at a similar price without overheating issues and can video record in 4k 60p without a time limit, that would be great! I'm not too fond of a cooling fan like in the R5C, blowing while trying to record the sounds of nature and filming for short films and documentaries in real time. My zoom mic will pick up the fan noise while out in nature and while recording in a quiet room for documentary and vlogging.

A very important thing you have to notice: shooting RAW on CF and the same time sub rec HEVC 10 bit 422 on SD card, lets you to have Clog2 on HEVC file. So you don't need to edit RAW to get the best dynamic range, the camera can get. If you shot the same clip on HEVC only, you'll appreciate the difference. The HEVC file shot in sub rec from RAW, will have a different prefix name. Dynamic range from RAW is wonderful!

@@alvisetedesco1023 sorry, I had a mistake using FCPX: I shot RAW plus HEVC. Canon Made a plug-in for RAW editing in FCPX that doesn’t let you RAW controls as white balance, exposure, sharpness... when I opened the file, I noticed better dynamic range with no noise than previous footage I made on Clog3. No way to change WB or exposure, I thought it was Clog2 on 10 bit file; there was no noise on the footage because the images were shot outdoor and overexposed without clipping: no signal under 25 IRE, no noise on shadows. It was RAW file without RAW controls (you need a third party plug-in), so Clog2 on RAW and Clog3 on 10 bit file. Then I checked on Da Vinci Resolve and this was right.

I think you should compare the R5c to the R7, why? To show what advancements canon has placed into their newest camera as it relates to filmmaking. Eg the clog, record times, video quality and options etc. just a idea

It really depends on your needs and preferences. I generally go for 2.8 zooms because they are more versatile, but they are bigger, heavier and more expensive.

Hey Josh if your using davici resolve on camera raw options decode to full res canon, gamma clog2 drop a clog2 709 lut check it out . Shoot a small raw clip and try its close to c500mk2

Yes, if you shoot in raw (which I don't and most people don't) you can import the footage in Clog 2, but it isn't recorded in Clog 2. It's just data off of the sensor.

Great video as always! In your image quality test I consistently find the A7Siii sharper, not by a little, but quite a bit sharper to my eyes. This is definitely interesting as the R5 is down sampled from 8k but sony is 4.2k to 3.8k. Maybe the AA filter was what's causing that? I don't think the differences between lenses cause this

The r5c is a cinema camera and as such has different picture profiles. Some call the look cinematic it’s not that the r5c is less sharp it’s that it gives a more professional what most film makers want look. If you want to compare sharpness then compare the r5 to the a7siii and I think you will see that the r5 looks better. This is why you see more and more people who own a a7siii or the r5 getting promist filters to put on their lens. This gives the video a softer cinematic look that cinema guys like. I think you are getting caught up in the crisp over saturated colors of a a7siii or the r5 and trying to compare it to a cinema camera. They are indeed to different beast. I hope I explained that ok I have the r5c and the r5 and r6 and r3 and on video all four look excellent but there is something about the r5c and to a lesser degree the r3 that look well more cinematic and better as it replicates what you see when you watch a movie. Video guys say that the r5 and a7siii look is more video/ camcorder verse cinema cameras. I actually like both and it just depends on what I am trying to achieve when choosing a camera.

@@wadesweeney2200 clinical image + pro mist = pleasing softness. R5C had this mushiness (not softness) that I suspect it’s not truly oversampling. At the end of the day it’s a hybrid camera. I don’t think any cinematographer would use this as a main camera but for others who do use it as an A cam they would prefer the clinical look and just put pro mist on the lens if needed. Cause you can’t create clinical look from a mushy look

You say that cinematographers would prefer the look of say a a7siii with a promist filter, ummm not one cinematographer I have seen review this camera has made such a rediculous statement. If that was the case why is this camera so popular and everyone I have seen who has it really likes it. You can make this camera look like that Sony but who would want too if your going for that filmatic look. I think you are confusing RU-vidrs with cinematographers. But I will just agree to disagree with you on this as everyone has their own opinion.

@@wadesweeney2200 wow man, I’m not picking a fight here. Oversampling is a relative term. From 8K, oversampling, 5K, oversampling too. I think the R5C is pixel binned to some degree then oversample after that. As for cinematographers and the soft look you mention, I’d say they would choose something better than both of these cameras

You forgot to mention the 6 second delay switching from video to photo on the Canon R5C. That is a huge Fail on this camera. I have 2 A7SIII and Canon R5. I love them both for different reasons. The Clog format has worst roll off on the highlights which is a total bummer.

this comparison makes no sense. you shouldnt have colour matched the footages. canon gives you way better image colours straight out of the camera. you dont even need to change anything in post. i also dont understand why people are complaining about battery life on the r5c. sony cameras dont have a great battery life either. plus the biggest con is that you cant even take good photos with the a7 s iii. 12 megapixels is just poor.

I don't find too much of a difference for face only vs face priority for this kind of tracking. Face only helps with not jumping to the background when the subject leaves the frame.

@@Josh_Sattin That's correct, and I should've clarified: my experience in DaVinci Resolve is that the RAW data is only interpreted as CLOG2. If it's feasible for the project, I'd highly suggest shooting RAW, it's a much better image over XF-AVC

The autofocus on the R5C was very disappointing. Some of those shots in a run-and-gun situation wouldn't be usable. I love it's a great image for both still and video but feels like a crap shoot.

And putting the bad Dual pixel autofocus I instead of the dual pixel autofocus II on the Canon R5. I hate that they do this all the time. It is so tiring and frustrating. Imagine the $1500 R7 having the better Autofocus II in video mode in comparison to a $4900 camera. Canon is just so evil.

This makes no sense, how come you have so much noise in the Sony footage at ISO 2500 ? The sony Camera can go extremely high without any noise and its base ISO is around 800 so this is not showing the true image quality of the camera.

8K has a higher dynamic range so youre lowering the R5C to a lower image quality than it's capable of and then comparing the cameras. it's like "make them both equal then see if they are both equal."

Dude, come on... at least use Sony FX3 for comparison, BUT, we all know CR5C spanks Sony cameras of same price. Not sure if anything comes close to it in that price range.

FX3 and A7S3 are essentially the same camera that's why I used the A7S3 for this comparison because of the EVF and lack of XLRs.

The old, canon vs sony click bait. It amazes me everyone wants to talk cameras. And the fanboys jump in the comments. But no one talks sound, or very few. Sound is more important for social media. If Sound is bad, people click off. FULLSTOP. With video. Many different ways of capturing sound and doesn't need to be expensive, but must be clear. Like the speaking voice on this video. But who makes videos about boring sound? 🤔😯

How is it clickbait. the dude did what the video implied. people whine about anything. some of us are trying to figure out which option they can go with. we are lucky to have people that can help our decision with a short video. Not all of us are rich and want to know how to spend our next $3500.
