Great video. So much to go through and glad you focused (no pun intented) on the settings you used rather than everything. I've found having the dual card slot works best for me with images and video recorded to standard card 1, with card 2 just taking a backup of images (mostly do image work).
@BrettCarlsen

Nice. Yeah a few friends run backups to another card. One puts a giant card in his second slot and just lets it run even across multiple events which I thought was smart

You TOTALLY need to set up AF method selection to the main dial!! Being able to go back and forth between the modes is much better. I was on a shoot with my R6 and didn't realize I had registered a custom setting before I changed this...I overshot the method I wanted and then had to cycle back around - and had to do it again. haha Great little video I plan to share with friends because I align pretty closely to your setup as well. ....Tesla....

I did end up swapping to that. Now I tap the back button and just turn my dial. Much faster. The original setup was more similar to my 1DX series cameras but the dial is WAAY better! Thanks so much!

Coming from using the Canon 5D Mark III and back button focus.... does it still make sense to use back button focus on the R6 if I plan on using the AI capabilities? Hi Brett, I stumbled on your video and so glad I did, so helpful. Question on my R6: when you get to Image Stabilizer mode I don't have the IS mode showing as an option, it's only showing me an option for "Digital IS". I guess I wouldn't worry about it but there's a weird abnormal sort of grinding noise coming from my 100 mm Macro lens when the image stabilization is turned on the lens while on this camera. I turned it off and the horrible grinding noise stopped. So the only thing I can think is that the camera has IS turned on and that it is fighting with the IS on my macro lens? But does that mean that I can assume IS is on and working on the camera body? I use my 70-200 a lot and I don't want to have shaky images if I turn IS off my lens. Any thoughts? Is there a number I can call Canon, do they offer online technical support? Thanks so much!!
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 года назад
Canon does have tech support. I’d look on Canon website in your country (Canon USA would be mine) I’d be surprised if the in body stabilization affects the lenses. The in body setting may be turning your lens IS on and off. No noise on other canon cameras?

If u have IS on the lens it will first use that before the ibis on the camera.

Hi Brett! Thanks for your honest review! I would like to ask you a question. In your opinion, as professional photographer, what would you choose out of two cameras, which one would you take over the other - R6 or 1DX II, if you had to? I am not professional (yet), meaning I do not make money from photography yet, but do take photography very seriously and aiming at top level skills as well as the equipment. I shoot landscapes, wildlife and portraits. I am pushing my camera to the limits and feel the need to have much better camera then my simple Canon EOS 70D. I really do need a good AF, ISO, FPS for shooting in a different conditions (animals in dusk and dawn, owls in the dark woods, etc). I do not want to spend money on something that is a little better then my camera is and then spend money again on a better camera, if it makes sense... I do own good collection of EF lenses, including a few portrait, ultra wide, telephoto F2.8 and big telephoto 600mm, so I am set there for a while. 7D II will not work, due to low ISO range; 5D IV - not enough FPS and they say the AF isn’t as good as 1DX II / III, especially with big lenses. 1DX III is not in my budget range. The R5 maybe, but it is similar to the R6 in that regard, except for the MP (for photography perspective only), has lower ISO range and is more expensive then the R6. I figured I could buy an R6, or for a $1000 more I can get used 1DX II in an excellent condition (which, to be honest, attracts me more then the R6). I know the R6 has super cool animal eye AF and other new techs, but 1DX II has better “constant” FPS, that doesn’t decrease with the battery life, like in the R6, has more rugged built and better weather sealing. I do use my camera in different environments (extreme cold, heat, rain, snow, deserts, woods, open fields, etc.). Does the R6 have the edge over 1DX II overall do you think? Thank you ahead! Igor.
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 года назад
Hey Igor. Having used all the cameras in these ranges, I think for what you do the R6 would be a better fit. I think the files will be cleaner from the R6 as it has a newer sensor. In addition to that the animal eye AF is really quite incredible. I’ve used it on a bird feeder one day with my 600+2X and it just amazed me even on hummingbirds. I agree there will be some small advantages in both directions. Build quality would certainly be one for the 1DX mark II. If you stripped everything else away the files should/will look better from the R6 (noise, dynamic range, etc) as it has that newer sensor. That would sway me in that direction personally. But I think you could nit pick and go either way happily. Personally I’d go R6 for what you do and I LOVE optical viewfinder and the 1DX form factor, so I really mean it that I think it’s a better fit. If you can, try one out. It’s really impressive.

@@BrettCarlsen Thank you Brett so much for your quick response and the advice from your perspective! I really appreciate it! Now I need to do some more thinking before I make my final decision. I do agree about newer sensor and the technology in the R6, but that EVF thought... I checked it out in Best Buy and wasn’t too excited about the EVF and the LCD being on... I’ll have to have another look at again. Thank you very much again for your opinion! It’s important for me to hear it from full time busy professional photographer!

@BrettCarlsen

It totally would! I don’t believe it’s the exact same sensor. The mark III sensor is very good and a bit higher resolution. The mark III is definitely superior but if you’re learning the R6 is totally capable. I think it’s the best student photography camera I’ve ever seen

I shoot a lot of realestate interiors and always have the camera set to neutral as if gives a different a totally starting point in your raw processing. The std setting for interiors and high contrast scenes gives you a harder more high contrast image to start with. You can always dial contrast in later it is the same thinking as using C-Log for video.
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 года назад
Well if you shoot RAW none of those settings matter. They only affect jpeg files and the embedded preview you see on the back screen. Adobe Lightroom (or camera raw) processes the file with their own engine regardless of your settings. So I just like to see a higher contrast image on my preview so I know if I’m clipping sooner...even if I might not be but I want it closer to what my final image will look like. Try swapping picture style to black and white and then import a file into lightroom to verify.
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 года назад
If you’re shooting jpegs however I 100% agree with you. Shoot neutral and give yourself more room for toning in photoshop.

I’m not entirely sure. I’d imagine it could possibly shift your timing on when it fires? Maybe. I’ve never used it really so unsure how it accomplishes controlling flicker. Historically if you were to do it manually you slow down or shift your shutter speed to be “in sync” with the flicker

Hmm. I can’t think of any but possibly it’s in video mode or maybe being in program or something similar limits the menu? Only big shift I’ve seen is when being in video vs photo mode and then heading to settings.

21:39 - Viewfinder only - interesting fact about these cameras (starting with the EOS R) is that the EVF uses more battery power than the big LCD screen. I had to read it in the manual myself before I believed it because it's counter-intuitive. I have my EOS R and R5 bodies configured so I have to *manually* change from EVF to LCD and back. I don't want the camera doing this for me.
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 года назад
I’ve noticed this too. My problem is the speed at which I grab cameras (I work with 2-3) I can’t waste time switching the display. I tried it for a few shoots and continuously was fumbling with it all day. But that’s good to know as I was definitely feeling like that was true.
@JaredRibic
@JaredRibic 3 года назад
@@BrettCarlsen - On the EOS R I used the checker-box-looking button (AF point button) to toggle between LCD and EVF. But now on the EOS R5 I'm using the front DOF button since I'm unable to use the front DOF button the same way I did with the 5D Mk4. I have both EOS R5 bodies set up this way and it works really well to quickly toggle because my finger is already nearby.

That’s smart. I’ve been using that to bring up the crop menu. Shooting NFL with it a bit, often I’m so far away I can save some data by using 1.6x. However this seems like something I’d use more (as you have it).
@JaredRibic
@JaredRibic 3 года назад
@@BrettCarlsen To get into the crop modes I use the 'Q' button and crop modes are in the bottom right corner. Since the crop modes are the only thing I need to get to quickly in this menu I press 'Q' and highlight 'FULL' so it's ready to go when I need to make the change. Then all I have to do is press 'Q' and roll the top wheel (closest to the shutter button) one click to the right and I've gone from 'FULL' to '1.6x' mode. When I'm done, I press 'Q' and roll one click to the left and I'm back in 'FULL' mode again. It works great because I can do this just as easily through the viewfinder so I don't even need to take the camera away from my eye to do it. I'm in the process of putting together a video on my EOS R5 experience, I'm about a month later than planned but hope to have it out soon.

Very awesome. I’m always changing white balance and other settings in Q but that setup makes sense. I’m enjoying (as always) how many ways there are to set things up and get to things. Hate when something only has one route to a setting etc.

You should use the Electronic Front-Curtain Shutter to avoid the vibration of the mechanical shutter,,,,, so I recommend to you use this mode better than the mechanical one. Explanation here: photographylife.com/what-is-electronic-front-curtain-shutter

the menu turn the picture on computer and camera, always put on : turn on PC but NOT turn on display. When you shooting portrait mode, it is nicer to have all picture filling the display, rather then turning and using only half of that beautiful screen!

Did you try switching it to smooth? I didn’t notice a big difference but maybe it’s a bigger difference person to person. That’s a bummer man. I’m definitely a optical viewfinder fan myself
@bentographyusa
@bentographyusa 3 года назад
@@BrettCarlsen I have it set on smooth and shooting motocross last night I felt like it was lagging. I've been shoot action sports for 15 yrs and I actually threw away all images from the track last night. I'm gonna have to just be patient with this new body.

I’ve had mixed luck personally in hyper critical things regarding timing. Personally I find myself shooting earlier with the mirrorless as I have 12 FPS and I too feel a little late when I try to keep up. Disclaimer: I hate when people motor drive to find a picture rather than time it properly and I’m totally an optical viewfinder fan.

@@BrettCarlsen Appreciate the feedback on this. Gonna shoot a ton this weekend with it. I went out this evening and shot some street photography and noticed it has issue focusing shooting into the sun. Have you noticed any issue with that? I know I'll get use to the viewfinder eventually.

I’ve actually had surprisingly good luck using it with flare/into light sources. But all cameras struggle with that.

You have to have the newest version of lightroom or photoshop available with the creative cloud subscription. Also Canon’s DPP software (I think that’s the name) which you can download from Canon’s website will open them.

Thanks for the great tips. FYI, Exposure Simulation is best left off when shooting strobes in a studio since the camera will have much smaller apertures in most cases than typical "fill flash" scenarios.

I shoot JPEG, so did you do one of these for JPEG users? Thx
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 года назад
I’m sorry I did not. Basically everything would be the same however. With Jpeg you just have to be mindful of your WB and I’d probably go with low noise reduction setting (can always add more in the computer). I generally shoot in the standard or faithful (or neutral?) picture profile when shooting jpeg. On standard I bring the contrast setting down a little bit
@angelogarciajr5356
@angelogarciajr5356 2 года назад
@@BrettCarlsen I asked for this because I shoot jpeg and I am getting noise at ISO 3200, f2.8 (f1.8 lens) shutter 1250? What menu setting will help eliminate noise at these settings? I should not be getting noise?
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 2 года назад
Ah gotcha. Well some noise will happen with any camera at those speeds. But you’d be looking for noise reduction (high iso NR) in the first menus. If you go too high you could lose detail etc. but test and find the sweet spot
@angelogarciajr5356
@angelogarciajr5356 2 года назад
@@BrettCarlsen At those speeds then my 5D3 is a better camera. It was set on standard, so maybe I will try low at the next BB game and see what that does. My post NR program makes the face look plastic. Thx

At 6:09 you say you turn of the IS? Really? IBIS is one the major new features of the R6/R5. Keep in on bro -- always.
@BrettCarlsen
@BrettCarlsen 3 года назад
I keep it off unless I need it. I agree but I also turn it off on lenses when I don’t need it. No point in IS when you’re at higher shutter speeds which I often am. For video I’d agree, rare artifacts don’t outweigh the obvious advantages there.

Apologies. I try really hard to speak more slowly when making videos, however I still am probably speaking pretty fast. RU-vid does allow you to change the playback speed on videos (lower right corner, gear icon) and maybe that would help? Thank you!
