R6 Vs R7 - Who wins and why? Lemme know your thoughts down below 👇

The possibility of using a speed booster is a win for the r7, since it also acts as focal reducer and offsets the crop factor if you need to go wide

Great Video, i own both and happy with them for videography and photography. One note on the R6 overheating, if you record on the Atomos Ninja V, there are no overheating issues at all and you get Prores files that are very easy to edit on Final Cut Pro. I shot my podcast with this setup and i had zero issues with overheating recording an interview for 1.5 hours. The image is great. What i love about the R7 is the custom video modes, make it so easy to switch.

Amazing! Thanks for sharing this! The Atmos Ninja is such an amazing piece of kit - also for the Eos-R allowing you to film in 10bit 🤩🥳

I have had my R7 for 2years today and its a very good camera for me to have started my photography journey on. I did pick up a used R6 mk i today as I want to try fullframe. It will be interesting to see which camera I prefer.

Hi Kai, great vid. I love the bang-per-buck factor of the R7. Though admittedly I can't help but feel Canon have cut some corners. For me, the build quality just doesn't quite match that of older DSLR cams. Granted I know they are going for light weight, but the OM-1 is proof that both are attainable. The R6 is ok but the overheating steered me away from it. Also, if you're interested I some Canon R7 tutorials on my channel, including an open-gate hack. 🙂

But its far from bad. I had the R6 for a while and „downgraded“ to the R7. Except for the slightly bigger and better grip on the R6 the R7 is basically the „same“ with other preferences (crop and crop video mode and high res vs more or less full frame dedicated low res camera)

Great comparison as always Kai! Both seem like really capable cameras with great video and AF performance you'd expect from Canon. I think the r6 would be a better overall camera for me but the overheating would definitely be an issue as these days I shoot a lot of talking head stuff that can sometimes go on for hours!

Great stuff here! I'm a happy DSLR user (mainly 7D2 and 1DX3), but I've found that I'm getting more and more tempted to pick up the R62. I don't shoot any video at all, but it seems that any new camera of good quality these days offers video, so that's fine.

I currently have the Canon 80D and I mainly do airplane photography/videography as well as travel photography. I’m not a professional nor do I make money from photography, however I’m looking to upgrade my camera due to the video specs and low light performance. I feel like full frame is the future nowadays however the extra reach with the crop sensor camera is also an advantage that I can make use of. The R6 and R7 currently sell for the same price (brand new) where I live, which one should I go for?
@KaiCreative
@KaiCreative 5 месяцев назад
Ohhh 😮 this is such a great question! But totally challenging! I would def go with the R6 still tbh - because of that full frame sensor / low light performance - if you can upgrade and get the R6markII even better 🙏🙏

Why did you choose to go with the R6 and not the R6 Mark ii?
@vintageproductions6149

All I’m hearing from this video is that the R7 wins. The only cons I see with this, is that the cameras sensor is cropped. It is unfortunate because the satisfaction of having a full frame sensor must be an experience, but literally everything about this camera just wins in the Top 3 camera line up. I was debating on buying a full frame camera that was between the R5 and R6, but if I’m still achieving an impressive amount of quality from this “crop sensor” then it’s an absolute win in my book. This camera is goated and I might just invest in the beast.

great video thanks. Currently trying to decide between R7 and more expensive R6mk2. I'd also considered R7 with a speedbooster to make it more of a full frame experience. Was considering going grey market to keep the cost a little lower where a new R6mk2 is only a couple of hundred pounds more than a new R6mk1. Obviously the R7 is a chunk of money cheaper which could be spent on a lens. Decisions decisions! Overheating on the R6mk1 puts that out of the running for me. I shoot a wide selection of genres including music events, family, wildlife, landscape and macro. Think the R6mk2 might be the way to go but will need to keep saving....
@KaiCreative
@KaiCreative Год назад
Great point! I’m sourcing a R6m2 for a side by side review with the R6. Also I’ve bought a bunch of my cameras from e-infin (grey marketplace) never had an issue - spent over £15K with them 👍

Coming from someone who just bought the viltrox s speed booster for the R7, I honestly don’t like the quality that comes out of it in the field. I’d rather switch to full frame so I’m getting the r6 today!

The R8 is also a good alternative. IBIS might be awesome, but lens stabilizer alone is also fine on modern lenses. The biggest downsides on R8 compared to the R6 II are: - battery life… you just HAVE TO have 1 spare battery at absolute least, especially for video where you would probably also benefit from 2 spare batteries or a USB-PD capable powerbank. For photo tho one battery should last a while when you turn it off or use eco mode/off timer. - no real mechanical shutter but the real „issue“…. the very slow burst rate in „mechanical“ EFCS mode. - missing IBIS, but only a thing if you have a lot glass without optical stabilizer in the range of 25-100mm and also use it a lot. If i would have known the R8 is coming that early and as a sort of „RP Mk2“, i would have stayed at full frame and upgraded my RP to the R8. But now im sticking to the R7 and i also appreciate the crop factor and especially the 4k60 crop video (440-1700mm with 150-600 sigma and 2200mm with RF 800 F11)

I’ve used the R6 for corporate videos in the past - one issue I found was the overheating issue in 4K - was a problem. R7 will do well in good light too 👍🙏

The limited range of lens for the Canon R APSC range is a limiting factor for me. Yes I could adapt EF/EFS mount lens instead, but then you aren't getting the full advantage of changing to the mirrorless format are you?
@KaiCreative
@KaiCreative Год назад
Good point - I’m hoping with the newer Crop frames they are putting out there will encourage more lenses to be created - don’t want them to go the way they did with the M-series 🥲
@DKtracks
@DKtracks Год назад
Sure Still "old" lenses designed for DSLRs work better on mirrorless bodies than they ever did on any DSLR. Also they are now way cheaper especially on the used marked.
@harrison00xXx
@harrison00xXx 10 месяцев назад
@@DKtracksnot all work better but mostly they work a lot better on RF cameras For example a „good“ old 75-300 IS USM canon was worse on mirrorless/RF mount and on the EOS RP. It just didnt find anything to focus, only with prefocussing it found stuff and locked on to. AF speed was too fast and somehow the lenses AF motors reacted that slowly they overshoot all the time and didnt find anything. But this is absolutely rare and probably one of 100s of lenses where this issue occurred. Also its a first gen 75-300 IS from like 2000-2005

I bought the R6 and am experiencing terrible overheating issues. Is the R7’s overheating control in 4k 60fps better than the R6? I also have purchased the atomos ninja V and was curious if you think it’s worth it to buy the R7 simply because of the superior heat control

It really depends on your lighting situation. I’d go for the full frame R6 for that depth that you get in the image particularly in low light cat walk sessions - but if you’re only shooting in a studio with controlled good lighting then I’d say the R7 is also a viable option.

Which one would you recommend for sports ? R6 or R7 or another camera?
@KaiCreative

Great question - I would probably opt for the R7 for sport - further range with the crop and more pixels for the details - and most sports are normally done in good light conditions 👍

But its so hard to overcome the issues ALL modern canon cameras share… the color shift depending on ISO. This becomes especially an issue with birding when you see shades of colors and you dont know is it noise, color shift or was it like this also in real life

What will be better for pet photography? R6 or r7? I have an old 550D and I’m not professional but I want to switch to mirrorless and since I’m not professional I don’t want to pay too much for the camera. I’m confused… or it’s better to invest in r6? And what type of lens will be perfect for pet photography?thank you 😊

I have r6 with 35mm and 24-70 f2.8 and think it is too big to bring it with me on day trips and family trips. So looking for something smaller. Of course lenses are a factor, but also notice that the canon bodies are big (not too heavy - but big). Thinking about buying second camera like Sony 7cii or 7cr, or perhaps even a6700. If only canon made a small body for the rf mount with higher res..

@@Peter-wm5eurumors of a retro R mount coming next year or even a fixed focal length to compete with the popularity of Fuji X100vi and Ricoh style cameras. I’m hoping for a compact interchangeable lens retro style but will be excited with whatever.

One of my issues with Canon crop cameras is that all of the decent quality lenses are for full frame. You’re never getting the best from your lenses with a crop camera. This thinking would definitely change for me if Canon made like Fuji and designed top quality glass specific for crop cameras.
