My R7 Review playlist: • Canon R7 Reviews
The new Canon EOS R7 boasts an attractive feature set for those who want to pay the ultimate photographic homage to their favorite places: 33 megapixels, IBIS, and a great weather-sealed body--is this just another middling APS-C camera, or is there enough tech under the hood to tackle nature's trickiest tests? Priced above some full-frame options, the R7 occupies a unique and complicated place for the landscape camera shopper, and in this video, we'll try to make that a little clearer, with a look at samples from my two months of using the camera, comparison images against full-frame options, a live dive through lightroom, and more! So get comfortable and come along for a clarifying look at what the EOS R7 has to offer the landscape photographer.

I use Darktable because I can use different demosaicing algorithms. I find this helps with noise. I have learned to get more and more out of the R7. I got the R7 for birds - not landscape. But I am so impressed with it I have no burning urge to get something like an R8 body as a FF companion. I’ll wait for funds for a R6ii rather
@MattRamseyTube

I think that's pretty smart; I also heard Canon is releasing a lightroom plugin for de-mosaicing, so I'm looking forward to that!

I got my R7 with the RF-S18-150 kit. It’s a very impressive lens and I do use it now and then. But I agree, the EF-S 15-85 & 17-55 need successors
@MattRamseyTube
@MattRamseyTube Год назад
The worst thing is that all the APS-C lenses so far have been repackaged EF-M lenses that I already wasn’t crazy about-my favorite canon crop mount lenses were always the third party ones and I guess we know where that’s going. For the R7, I’m not so concerned with smaller lens size and generally happy to use full-frame lenses.

Hi Matt what settings do you have your R7 on for landscape?
@pilsplease7561
@pilsplease7561 Год назад
Hearing that you have issues with exposure on the r7 is a bit concerning was thinking about getting one. My last camera was a Fuji XT-30 I hated fujis color science and found the camera to have a lot of weird noise in the images. So I was hoping to get into the canon ecosystem without spending too much but dont want a camera thats going to be difficult to work with. Im still shooting quite a bit of film alongside digital.
@MattRamseyTube
@MattRamseyTube Год назад
Exposure wasn't a huge disappointment--it was on-par with my experiences with APS-C cameras and actually impressive considering the resolution, but I'd be lying if I said it was the same as a full-frame camera; it's good, but not *quite* there. Like most crop sensors, an exposure bracket usually gets it to a pretty good place.

One of biggest issues with using LR with Canon raw files is that LR can’t handle them properly
@MattRamseyTube

I have heard that can be an issue but wanted to be sure to show the most common editing situation as opposed to something to specifically favor the camera. Thanks for pointing that out, Martin-great addition to the discussion!

Did you try HDR PQ? You can shoot HDR PQ CR3 files with the Canon R7.
@MattRamseyTube
@MattRamseyTube Год назад
Hey! The short answer is no--like most people I know, I'm not sure where the HDR-PQ options fit into my RAW work flow; my suspicion is that they'll interest me more as displays (and shooting options) become more common and more standardized, and in the meantime I'm still favoring developing full-range raws and log footage for viewing on standard displays, but VERY curious to hear how others are using it. Have you tried it? How are you liking it?
@cooloox
@cooloox Год назад
@@MattRamseyTube I need to do more testing to decide what I think, but basically you turn on HDR PQ and if you're shooting CR3 files, you get an HDR raw file or if you choose JPEG you get an HDR HEIF file instead, or you can have both. When you say workflow, shooting in CR3 you get a single raw file, as usual. They open and edit fine as per any other CR3 file (I've tested in Capture One Pro), however the image is very flat and has noticeably more dynamic range. As, an example, I photographed a room inside my home. The blinds were mostly closed, but I could see trees and houses across the road, through the narrow gaps. It was bright outside and hard to make out details in real life. One sofa is backed up to that window and the backrest was very dark to the naked eye and the front of the chair, where your calves touch, was super dark to the point it was pure black to the naked eye. With a normal CR3, I could raise the shadows to match how the room really looked, but I got a lot of noise. The HDR PQ version of the CR3 was much brighter than the first shot and brighter than the real scene in the shadows, but the highlights had more details too. I actually had to darken the shadows! The highlights were already fine. I don't understand why there is so much dynamic range from a single shot. I've been using HDR PQ for birds in flight and the scene looks much flatter in the EVF, as soon as I turn it on. The highlight recovery on white birds has been fantastic, if I'd exposed for the shade and the bird flew into direct light.

Hi Matt, First of all, I just stumbled across your channel, and wanted to thank you for this wonderful video. Here’s my question, I have a 24 megapixel crop sensor canon, DSLR (77D). I’ve printed (and sold) archival prints 20x30 with it, and gone as high as 24x36. This camera still functions fine. Being that I have a few EFS lenses, I’m considering whether I should get the R7 so I can use my lenses with an adapter, or if I should get the older R which I’m sure I can find secondhand. Problem is my budget, if I get the R, I still have to drop at the least 1000-2000 bucks on a couple of decent lenses, whereas if I get the R7 I can continue to use my handful of EFS lenses with an adapter, and hopefully next year after I’ve had some sales, I can then move up to full frame, maybe an R5, and then start buying glass for both cameras (R7 and R5). Sorry for the long, winded post, as a note, I shoot a lot of portraiture. (Outdoors, in the Middle East, deserts, islands) as well as landscapes. Not too concerned about wildlife or sports photography. Again, I know a full frame is better in certain regards, but again… Budget. Last option is to sell off everything I have, but picking up the R7 would give me two cameras, in case something happened to one with them in the field. Thanks in advance.
@MattRamseyTube
@MattRamseyTube Год назад
Hey-thanks for watching. Sounds like you’re intent on ending up with the R7 and one mirrorless full frame camera and you’re not sure which order to invest. If you hadn’t considered it, unlike with DSLRs, you can use your EF-S lenses on RF mount full frame cameras and the camera will automatically crop to only use the APS-C sensor area. You’d be shooting at a lower resolution until you sold enough work to afford a full frame lens, and then at the full resolution until you can afford the R7. But I think you’re probably right that getting the R7 first so you can keep working with your current lenses at high resolution is probably the most straightforward path.

Seems to me like you are underexposing the R7 by around 2 stops. Always expose to the right on cropped sensors and since your increased dof allows for an extra stop the ISO should always be a full-stop down from what you would normally shoot your full-frame landscape should you need it to.

I'm upgrading from a 50D dslr and looking at either the R7 or R8. I shoot mainly landscapes (bracketed for hdr), portraits & buildings. Occasional macro too. The 7D will keep me in my crop sensor comfort zone and has IBIS, but I can't help feeling the R8 might suit my needs better. Especially as it weighs less & i trek a lot. My fear is losing that crop sensor range, although I rarely use long telephoto. Any thoughts?
@MattRamseyTube
@MattRamseyTube 9 месяцев назад
The R8 comes out on top for wide-angle field of view and high-ISO/shadow recovery (two important things for landscape photography), and is marginally lighter (after a day of carrying both, I couldn't have been sure which camera was on which shoulder), but the R7 feels more confident to me, more rugged and sealed to the elements, greater battery longevity, a stabilized sensor, dual media, less temperature restrictions, and a host of other nice professional features, so if the two listed advantages of the R8 don't seem absolutely critical, I would generally recommend the R7. See both compared head-to-head: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-m7d0KtV9XZY.htmlsi=HadCTiyCUoSZ0fp2

@@MattRamseyTube - thanks Weight & wide angle are a factor for me. My "happy place" is sat on a rugged outcrop with my 50D, sigma 10-20 & some Lee ND filters, capturing the view. I'm UK based & love walking the North Devon coast or the Cumbria Lake District. That said, I think any camera I chose will be lighter & far more advanced than my 15 year old 50D. My kit bag usually has the sigma 10-20, canon ef 23-105 L and either the ef 50mm or ef 100mm macro lenses. The sigma is the one I use most for landscapes. But as I am getting older I am starting to feel the weight more whilst trekking. I probably should go into a store & have a good play with the newer cameras. Another option would be to rethink my budget & look at the r6 mk ii. But not sure it will be much difference in weight to the 50D. Great videos BTW. I found these by chance, and they are well shot &informative.

@@gangulynsayak Wow Sayak you really need a camera that does it all! Sounds like you have a good understanding of the R8's limitations. For stills, I woudn't worry about the overheating too much, but the buffering is a little annoying for wildlife. It would be a FANTASTIC lightweight street camera. The R7 isn't ideal for landscapes but could do on the street and is better with buffering for wildlife. Both these cameras are better than what's available from Sony and Nikon in your price range, but you may have to decide what kind of photography is most important--I'd recommend the R8 for streets and landscapes, or the R7 is wildlife is most important. Best luck!

@MattRamseyTube
@MattRamseyTube Год назад
Hey Joao! My thoughts are the R7 is a solid investment to step up your video game, but for stills, I’m honestly not sure it’s a good value upgrade from the 90D, as the image quality is very similar. If you have autofocus issues with the 90D, you might rent an R7 to see if it’s a better experience. Most rentals will let you purchase the rental so it’s a neat way to test before you commit and see if it’s worthwhile. That’s my suggestion, happy shooting!

@MattRamseyTube
@MattRamseyTube Год назад
After shooting on both sensors, I would probably choose the RP with a good lens over the R7 for landscapes, but please keep in mind the RP has no weather sealing, which will limit it for rainy-day shoots like the stormy skies I was able to catch in this video.
