The Nikon 5500 does indeed have 39 af points, but aren't only 9 of them cross type in the centre whereas the 19 on the Canon are all cross type and provide better coverage across the sensor? Sometimes more doesn't mean better!
Charlie Harrington That doesn't mean the single-axis focus points on the D5500 are useless or inaccurate. I have the camera and all focus points are accurate! The only challenge is when the lights get dim; that's when the cross type points shine.
It is nice to see the Nikon Store, I mean Camera Store review a Canon camera at last. The bias against Canon products is very apparent in all your reviews, especially within the past year. I used to shoot Nikon cameras exclusively, until I tried the 5D2. Then I switched to Canon cameras. The simple truth is the color renderings of the Canon camera is better than anything else on the market today. And yes, I only shoot raw. Funny you should mention the Sony A6000 mirrorless. I looked at the pictures taken with the Sony and compared them with my 5D3 - the color renderings of the Canon is far far superior. Sony may have the best sensor technology, but has not a clue on how to do digital signal processing. Canon has also been producing one killer lens after another lately. They have not produced a bad L lens since the 70-200 2.8L IS mark II. The 24-70 2.8L II, the 16-35 4.0L IS, the 100-400 4.5-5.6 IS II, and now the 11-24mm 4.0L are all fantastic lenses that are better than any Nikon offerings! Test one of these lenses and you will see why people shoot Canon. So at least for now I am sticking with Canon.
opjoipopikopp[pl[p[ Why compare a 1k camera with a full frame camera that is triple the price? Its just stupid. You should be comparing 5d III with a7r or a7 II. a6000 hands down is the best apsc camera on the market. Advantage of Sony is AF Zeiss glass coming thick and fast and now with Batis series announced as well.
opjoipopikopp[pl[p[ I really try not to allow biases to influence my choices nor do I receive compensation in any way from any of our suppliers but you are correct in that the last year has been rough in regards to Canon. They have refused to legitimately compete in the mirrorless market for fear of hurting DSLR sales, have upgraded rebel SLRs in name only without adding new sensors or improvements until now, and seem to incorporate image quality setups that are excellent yet consistently behind the other brands right now. This all results in myself and a large majority of the community feeling that Canon is slipping a bit right now in the camera market. If you watch our reviews make note that we appreciate Canons body design and auto focusing capabilities and I wholeheartedly agree that they deliver stunning colour and excellent lenses. I don't see how I can be held responsible for Nikon making great products as of late and we certainly review a large share of Canon products such as the T2i, T4i, T5i, 60D, 70D, 5DMK3, 7DMK2, EOS M, and T6i/S. Add to that a host of Powershot cameras and L lens comparisons and its clear we give Canon their due. My job is not to protect peoples feelings or brand loyalties but instead to show how one camera compares to another, inform them to make their own choices, and provide my own personal opinions about the equipment and market place. Canon make brilliant handling SLRS, with stunning colour, a comprehensive quality selection of lenses, using less capable sensors, and without trying to address the mirrorless trend. Chris @ TCSTV
opjoipopikopp[pl[p[ I agree with you totally. The bias is pathetic and I notice the reviewer forgot to mention how useless video focus hunting and focus noise (as in audible sound) is on the Nikon D5500 when mentioning it does most of the stuff the 760 does, and better. Biased Nikon lovers like dropping numbers such as 39 AF points, but every test I've seen shows the Canon 19 point AF system with all cross type is superior and the camera reviewed here has a newer improved version. The reviewer said he expected more from the video and yet it kills Nikon video, hunting around and drifting in and out of focus. I just watched a review of these cameras by Michael the Mentor and he properly demonstrated how brilliant the video tracking and AF is. This Nikon reviewer is clearly jealous and hardly shows anything in his videos which might show the true capability of the Canons.
Great tutorial video thanks for that. I just upgraded from my 500 D to the 750 D was very impressed with the performance. I was going to get the 760 D but I'm a quadriplegic and cannot use the lock feature on the dial so I had to go back to the 750. Going from 3.5 up to 5 frames per second was amazing so much better and I like the autofocus nice and quiet. I'm not really worried about doing videos so much but was told the 760 is a bit better for that particular mode than the 750 D. I bought a Tamron all in one 16-300 mm lens for use in the wheelchair trips for during the day and abort the 55-250 STM to use at concerts if I go to them because of the extra f-stop on the Canon 4.5-5.6 as opposed to the Tamron 6.3 I think it is at full. This is not much of a difference but it's better than nothing. The 2.8 lenses are too heavy for me hold onto so was stuck to the 4.5 version unfortunately still with the faster frame rates and fast autofocus it should be much better than 500 D than the older STM lens of the same type range of focusing length. Anyway thanks for the review as it was very interesting. Regards Mark Sydney Australia. PS I use a shutter blower brush release which I have had since the Canon T 70. The T3 adapter with electronic plug cut off and a 3.5 or a 2.5 connected to that can't remember what size it is in the side of the camera and on the end that has a screw in cable release adapter which is connected by rubber tubing to a blower brush which I bite on to take photos which works well.
This video was sooooo USEUFUL, I was confused about which one of these 2 to buy, and you explain just what I needed to know to decide. Thank you so much!! Really appreciate content like this.
I came across your video as I am waiting for my T6s to arrive. Nice work capturing an overview of the camera. Good luck to your Flames in the second round.
Great video. I also watched your video on the Nikon D5500 and the Sony a6000. Interesting point for the Sony that they didn't include a port for a microphone & you can only use their external mics. I'm looking for a new camera for YT videos. A lot of women have had the Canon Ti series and like it for fashion/beauty/etc videos. So many decisions to make and so little time!
also your channel rocks and if i lived closer i would totally visit the store, i work at a camera store too andddd you guys pretty much keep me up to date on whats new and why its different/better so you actually help me out a lot! keep it up!
You know, guys, I think we have a pretty good idea where Canon intends to take their next steps at this point. As STM (and, for larger lenses, linear motors) AF systems really become more and more prevalent in their optical lineup, it will become clear that they intend to go mirrorless while also maintaining the EF/EOS standard mount. I believe they've finally begun truly tipping their hand. Despite the innovations of other companies, it's clear that both Canon and Nikon have decided to stick with what they're good at. Canon has the decisive edge, statistically, as they at least have a portfolio of products that can float the camera division while R&D gets paid for. Nikon is at an extreme disadvantage due to their inability to create industry defining products at a palatable rate (the D7200 does not a replacement for the D300s make: despite the obvious advantages the D7200 brings to the table, it's still not the prosumer body we've all been seeking) and due to their continued reliance on box store sales of D3000 series products, not to mention the recalls and declining QC, changing of componentry and construction in key lenses, etc. So the question for Canon users is whether or not they're prepared to switch lenses yet again as it becomes clearer and clearer that stepper systems will be more and more necessary for smooth transition af and tracking as Canon becomes more reliant on live view to compete against the likes of Sony and Micro FourThirds, because it's going to be necessary, especially for those with pre Series II L lenses in particular as well as for those with merely USM AF motors. Sony is forcing Canon's hand and it's going to be fun to watch. By the time Canon brings out their mirrorless cameras (at this point clearly biding their time, working on their base lens lineup for the moment {the 24-105 STM and 50mm f/1.8 STM are dead giveaways}), Sony will be several generations ahead in development and refinement of their system. It will be the death of Samsung NX when Canon joins the fray but Sony has come too far, and done so with success, for them to fail unless they do something astronomically stupid (still a possibility though, watching them of late, a less likely possibility than in the past). Nikon meanwhile needs to decide on its future plan with immediacy. You can see where Sony is headed. They're making it pretty clear. We're beginning to see where Canon wants to go, which is refreshing because, with the advent of the T5i we all questioned if they knew what the hell they were doing anymore (the 70D does not convince me, there being too many image quality compromises held within DualPixel AF, though it's a solid step forward for them, at least). Nikon needs to figure things out right quick or they will go the way of Minolta, though likely without the merging savior of an electronics company (unless Fuji surprises us with a nearly unprecedented move) within the next 10 years. It's refreshing watching your reviews, Chris, Jordan. Much respect from the states.
I went to the store to pick up the d5500. But it is just way too small for my large hands. Same with all mirrorless camera's. I like the size of this. I found this video pretty much focussed on the negatives...
I like the big chunky body ... the smaller factor on nikon d5500 makes the camera quite uncomfortable for me and the grip is loosed, while with this body I have actual feel that i have in my hands a really nice PRO CAMERA .. not some amatuerish one ! :D
Thank you so much for this review! I was thinking about purchasing the T6i and didn't even know there was a T6S! Going to hold off though after watching your review. Thanks again.
Ironically just purchased this as my first dslr. It was between this and the Sony A6000. I guess I wanted the classic dslr feel before it was too late. Down the road though I'll probably go mirror less once it matures. Great review! I hope I didn't make a bad purchase. lol. Still have 30 days.
i really enjoyed the video and recently purchased the t6i. What was used to record the audio in this video? i found it to be excellent, clear and crisp.
Man, I really love the way you guys present your reviews. Awesome awesome work. I'm a total noob/beginner who has been researching for a couple of weeks on what camera to buy. I know mirrorless is the new hot commodity, but I've always wanted a dslr. This review confirms my decision to go with the Nikon D5500. Thanks guys.
I am using it for a year for just about everything and it is nice and reliable. I also have that 35 F/2 IS and its very good combo, AF spot on and very fast. With STMs it can be fun camera to use in LW, USM not so much..
hey Christ, thanks for all the videos huge fan, i have a question,.. its reguarding the Sony rx10ii,.. i wanted to know if you recommend it for making wedding videos or music videos??? thanks
Awesome video, guys! One of the first full hands-on reviews of the new Canon Rebel T6 series. Thumbs up for the honest views and observations that others might miss (smaller optical viewfinder with focus points difficult to distinguish!). I myself am considering to buy my first DLSR. T5i (700D) was on my list for long now and just then T6i/s was announced. Do you think it's better to start with this newer sensor and overall offerings and spend that extra money? Or should I go ahead with 700D (which might cost even lesser now)?
Don't. The nikon d3300 is way better than the t6i/s. Judging by the reviews, the d3300 is an excellent entry level DSLR. Its low light and image quality is better than the 7d mark ii which is a higher end APS-C DSLR.
Mild gargle I've been locked onto Canon for a while now (my other point and shoots are Canons and my friends own EOSs). Also the UX for Canon feels much more closer to my heart as far as I've tried. But for sure now I'll personally have a go with a rented D3300 (which I've never ever used) for a comparison! :-)
Hi! Great video! Ive gotta question...i usted to take pictures with my old nikon D3000... And I eant to change. Ive been looking foward the nikon d5600 but a lot of people recommend ed me the canon t7i, 800D...i want to get better rwsults in pictures in comparisson with the nikon D3000 anda enjoy the videos. Can you tell wich would you recommend? Canon t7i or nikon d5600 for pictures and for videos? Please help me out! Thanks!!!
It's good they finally gave there users a new sensor... But 720p really??? Everything will soon have 4k and they still are on 720p on a BIGGER camera body. I am glad I went with Sony over Canon. It just seems like Canon got really lazy.
Stanley Anthonymuthu Rumor has it that it could be announced in May, so you might want to hold off for a couple of weeks anyway. The a6000 really is great though.
Great video my friend. I'm heading to Calgary in 4 days for my holidays. You've made me re-think my t6i purchase. I may look into the Sony camera your referring to.
Nope. Not sick of hearing about the A6000. One of the best camera purchases I have ever made. And selling my Canon for the money for it - just the "icing on the cake" so to speak :)
Awesome review. It's really frustrating because I want to get into videography and was considering going w/ the Sony a6000 mirrorless but the main issue I have with it is that it lacks a mic input port. What the hell was Sony thinking? DSLR companies are like turtles when it comes to catching up w/ the times and this review proves that. I am looking at the Canon T6i now (the Nikon D5500 doesn't allow for exposure adjustment in Live View) and the lack of 1080p 60fps sucks
Chris and Jordan thanks for great review as usual. Is the viewfinder worse than in older Rebels? Can you showe us any sales chart that show mirror less camera beating ore gaining large shares of DSLR market. Especially in North America
Hi, What you think which is better for Photo's as i'm not into video photography. I was thinking of Nikon D5500 + 18-105mm + 50mm f1.8 but than i saw canon , it has 2 dial and top screen..Price are same. I'm confused now. please help me to decide. I need camera for hobby, family & travel only. Thanks
i would skip right to the 70D. i bought a 7Dmkii and i love it, but with that being said i came from a t3i. If I were coming from a 70D i would've waited and went for the c100 mk2... a lot of people got on me about the gh4 and the a7s but neither one were on my radar. Big fan of you guys hope to buy a camera from your store in person some day. keep up the great work!!
Hey Chris and Jordan, love the channel! I picked up a T5i last Christmas to start getting a little more into photography (it's my first non point&shoot) and DSLR videography. I also use it occasionally at work for run and gun news video (prefer it in some situations to a big ENG camera). Is there enough of an upgrade here to consider trading up to a T6S or would I be better served with something like GH4 or 7D mk2? Would love your thoughts.
Shane Smith If you're going to stick to Canon, I'd go to a 70D or 7D MK II, since you'll get a dramatic ergonomic and AF update (especially in Live View). If you want to get more into the video side, Sony and Panasonic will get you quite a bit more bang for your buck. Jordan @ TCSTV
Shane Smith it's a small step to upgrade from T5i to T6s. if you want to upgrade, i think it's better to save a little more and get the 7Dmkii or the GH4 which is a video beast.
Shane Smith Video bit rate is downgraded on T6 (28.8 Mbps) from T5i (44Mbps) so no benefits in video department. GH4 looks to be best choice for what you described as intended use.
Hi I m little confuse about t6i t6s and 80d I am only do still picture no video I had professional video camera. I want a camera only to do still pict so what so I dont spend so much money the extra money I like to spend at lens because 80d in brasil cost more 200 dolar only for the body Us1200 and the t6s is 1200 the body and the lens 18-135 my questios is the t6i is half the price do you think is better only for pict t6i. thank very much sorry about my english
@TheCameraStore which one is better camera Nikond5300 or Canon 700d in image quality and overall performance. please tell me . I'm confused . my frnds tell me canon is best brand nikon comes on 2nd.. please tell me.
The real DSLR rival for mirrorless is the D5500, small, light and amazing image quality, good autofocus and many lenses...this Canons are just out of place in 2015.
I gotta disagree... Nikons cheap cameras are just so limited when it comes to lenses. I have big collection of older ai nikkor lenses that just don't work on any of the cheaper nikon cameras like the 5500 or 3300. You don't even get aperture priority auto exposure on these old cameras. At the same time, I can mount my old nikkor lenses on my Canon 700D with an adapter and use focus peaking and aperture priority which is all I need
I am about to get my first dslr, and i am realy confused on which one to buy. From my research nikon is ahead in beginner dslr(d5500) and wildlife dslr(d500). Is this changing every few years, or is nikon always a bit ahead (image quality and editing)? (only interested in stills(mostly raw), no video)
So I'm looking to purchase from B&H and get an accidental warranty. Don't want to spend more than $1100-1200ish. Mostly going to be taking pictures of my young son, family events, and sport events, some of which in low light.. Was originally looking at the T6s with an 18-135mm lens but this comes out to about $1200 with warranty and accessories. Now I'm leaning towards the A6000 with a 18-135mm lens and it only comes out to about $1000 with accessories. Or I could get the A6000 kit with the 16-50mm and 55-210mm for about $900 with accessories. Any opinions?
I'm trying to choose a Dslr camera and the the t6i is 300 dollars less than the t6s which puts it out of the budget I was setting that allowed me to get the t6i or d5500 do you think the price difference is really worth it?
can you please make a comparison between the canon rebel t6s and the sony rx10 ii? if my first priority is stills, which one of the both is the best? And if I want the best overall camera of the both, which one should I pick?
How does to go price wise compared to the Pentax K-S2? The viewfinder looked positively tiny, and you've got to ask why go DSLR if not for the viewfinder these days, now that there is on sensor phase detection auto focus on mirrorless.
Hi, I saw that you prefer the T6s, but, considering that both are almost The same camera, wich of two do you indicate for who wants to buy The first dslr?
Hi, I have a canon D760 which I bought in India but now I'm in the US. My question is, will it work here. The US equivalent is Rebel T6s. Will I need a new battery charger as the electricity system is different here. Will I need any other changes ?
Thanks for the review. I just got a EOS T6i. Maybe I should gone for the T6s. I shoot trains and Model Trains. Some landscapes. I had a EOS model before for 8 years that died on my a few years ago. I enjoyed shooting with it. Now I have this T6i. So far I find it a good match a bit heavy. But very capable and quick on tracking say a Train engine in motion. However I have only had it for a week. I love the new features so far. I added a Tamron 18 /300mm that allows me to get in real tight on very small Train models. It let me get shots of engines I am to far away to get up close too. One good thing I noticed is the auto focus is getting plenty of light. I like that. It was a big issue on my old EOS. I hope this camera will produce what I am looking for. After all I am still a beginner with no real training. Just good at guessing at what I want. Thanks again. wish I saw this review before I got the T6i if it truly was only $100 difference. Vince.
how do you manage the batterylife whilst using it? can you charge it via USB to the computer or something whilst filming to get a ''eternal'' battery life?
Been waiting for this camera to come out as can't decide nikon 5300/5500 or this. So even though processor is 4x faster than the old canon 700d your saying its still not as good as the Nikon? :( oh will look into Sony cameras u mentioned if cheap good image and zoom and wide-angle lens may be option. Thanks helpful video
First! Hey Chris and Jordan,I just noticed from the specs that the video seems downgraded from the T5i/sl1 atleast in bit-rate.The container is different mov to mp4 but essestially the video codec seems to be the same mpeg-4. Is the video worse off compared to its predecessor?
TheCameraStoreTV Hey Mahanth, I've been testing it quite a lot and it does have an option for a 'lighter' bit rate, but the standard bit rate is about the same. Still pretty good.
hey everyone, this may be a stupid question because I know NOTHING about cameras at all but want to start learning for making videos. but i was wondering would the 7D(mark I) be better for shooting video now? Or a new Canon 6s (even though its an entry level camera and much cheaper). I guess my real question is: given the difference of technology between the two which is better??
If you ask me, the biggest advantage of a DSLR in the future will be the OVF experience. If they (Canon, Nikon, etc..) would make bigger and better (pentaprism) viewfinders in their entry level DSLRs, they will have an advantage over mirrorless that will not fade away in the near future.
ObelixCMM Makes sense - wasting so much bandwidth for low-res moire was unreasonable. I wonder are the new cams still limited to 30 minutes of continuous recording? In my recent comparison Nikon 3300/5300 shot better video than T5i, but the Nikons cannot make several files during one shoot, while the T5i can. I mean, if they can make three segments to make it half an hour, they could as well go further and offer unlimited duration for uninterrupted scenes.
what is the model number he is using, i want to get it because it is the screen you can pull out when taking the photo or for video.please someone help respond asap
Which one should I get guys, sony a6000 or the canon 760d? First time buyer of camera and with a budget. I am interested in the 760d but my friend is getting an a6000 which has better specs but lacks a touchscreen and small grip. Anyone could help me out on this? I am getting some lens in the future and sony lens are freaking expensive.
Canon Rebel T5 (1200d) is a great starting DLSR. I've had mine for 3 months and have already outgrown it and need more for video wise, but if your not serious it's a great camera. I've managed to pull out amazing quality out of the little thing.
OK i have a question, im thinking about buying a canon T6s but i dont know if i should get the 18-135mm stm kit or the 18-55mm stm and 55-250mm stm bundle. Also im probably going to order it in the next few days so if you can reply back id really appreciate it.
I say get the 18-55 and 55-250. Yes, you will have to switch lenses out when you need to but having the extra 135-250 mm when you need it is wonderful.
The 55-250mm STM lens is awesome! Very sharp and reliable focus. I would get the 18-55 + 55-250 and later the 18-135 STM :) these are all great and cheap lenses :)
alright so im a camera rookie and i was looking to get one for youtube/instagram. i recently got an iphone 6s plus and im planning on videoing so is there a point of getting a t6s?
hello I am intersted in video and documentaries the most but also photos do you recommend the t6s or the 70d? is there any other type of cam you recommend canon or not I really love video but I also need to take pics for my university classes
I have the 550D (Rebel T2i) and I'm still quite happy with it. However, I wouldn't upgrade to any of the more recent Rebels, I'm actually looking to buy... you've guessed it, a Sony A6000. Mirrorless has to be the future and at its current mark-down price the Sony is unbeatable.
Hai.. I'm using 18-135 stm lens for my Canon T6s would like to upgrade to which could give a same kinda performance on video blogging and stills.. can you or anyone help me out..
Bold move on bigger DSLRs. I like it. After returned a Sony a5100 I wanted the smallest possible DSLR: the EOS 100D / SL1 . Now I want something that feels more substantial in the hand. A Sony with a good lens won't fit in the jeans pocket either so then it doesn't matter to me how big the camera is. Speaking of lenses, everybody knows the situation on the Sony ecosystem; I't doesn't even come close to what Canon has to offer no matter cheap or expensive. You wanna stay with the small and cute but optically very bad 16-50mm Sony pancake without swapping lenses ever? Than Sony is for you.
