I bought Canon's best super telephoto zoom lens, and it's been one year and thousands of photos later. Today, I review my favorite lens for nature and wildlife photography, the Canon RF 100-500 f4.5-7.1. My thoughts on the good and bad, and sharing some photos taken with the lens after 12 months of in the field work. Its Fall along Lake Erie and the crisp air and colorful leaves make for a perfect time to head out with my camera along the lakeshore.

I shoot with that Lens as well. Light and versatile. I’m a hybrid shooter, from large mammals to tiny spiders and you can do it all. It’s my only lens. I sold everything not nailed down to afford it, but I’m glad that I did!

I agree with you about the pluses. I have actually handheld that lens paired with the R5 to a shutter speed of 1/120 and not had any motion blur from me. The stabilization is great. I used to have the Sigma as well. The problem with f numbers is that it doesn't tell you how much light passes through the lens. f7.1 sounds like a big difference from f6.3 but it is 1/3 of a stop if they both actually let the same amount of light through. I agree that this lens allows more light at f7.1 than the Sigma did at f6.3. This lens is much, much sharper too, even wide open. I agree about the price being high. I think I need to get a 1.4x for my RF lens and give it a try.

Awesome look back at the 1-5 and I totally agree with your findings. It’s weight, weather proofing, and sharpness and speed of AF is awesome. It’s my go to lens for the majority of my work. Great shots and nice to catch up with your vids 👍. All the best Rich 👍

Thanks Richard. Much appreciated. Yeah the 1-5 is a favorite. Won't ever get rid of it until maybe a mk2 comes out or if I win the Lotto lol the 200-500f4 that's rumored. Right now saving for the r5mk2. Upgrading from the RP finally. Love your content as well, brother. Happy shooting 📸

Your compositions are improving quite a bit. Love the GBH on the lake, and the portrait with the black background. I would love to take a road trip someday. Or, you could come to L.I. for some ospreys. 4 nesting pairs at my beach. C U out there!

Brother, this vid got me excited to get back out. those are fantastic shots my man. I currently have the 200-500mm Nikkor zoom paired with the D850 Nikon since sept 2020, it's been good to me thus far. I love your work. thanks for the motivation!

I've been watching your videos for a few months now. On thing I've noticed the improvement of your photographic skills. It could be partly because you stick with the same lens you have become used to. I always say if it isn't broken don't mess with it. The two things I don't like about the lens is price and I wouldn't fit my t7.😊 be a David' and don't let Saul talk you into something that may not work for you. Great video.

My favorite big lenses are my Sigma 150-600mm contemporary and Sigma 100-400. I use the 100-400 the most of the two because of it's weight - or lack of. Love your shots. Birds are one of my favorite subjects.

I think that I still have yet to see anyone that doesn't like that lens. My budget tells me that I have to continue to use my Tamron 150-600, although I know that Canon has to be sharper. What are you thoughts on the 200-800? Another lens that I am unlikely to own, but has a great range that I would love.
@KevinNordstrom
@KevinNordstrom 10 месяцев назад
Probably gonna make a video later on to share my thoughts on the 200-800

@KevinNordstrom 10 месяцев назад
Short answer, if I didn't have the 100-500, I would pass on the 200-800 and stay with Sigma or Tamron for now.

I have a few things i dislike about this lens but i think they all stem down to the price. It was just too expensive for what it was at f7.1 it looks like its now on sale for ~$500 less than before but that also hurts having bought it at the $2600 price. Things I like: 1. Flexibility of 100-500 2. 0.35x magnification and close focus 3. Size Dislikes: 1. F7.1 aperature 2. Placement of control ring and manual focus 3. Zoom tightener instead of a lock 4. Dust pump without the internl zoom. 5. Annoying filter mechanism on the lens cap 6. Not great with teleconverter

Nice review. Have you used the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens? Would this be the mirrorless replacement for that lens? Just curious how much that extra 100 mm matters in the field and how the weight compares. Thanks
@KevinNordstrom
@KevinNordstrom 10 месяцев назад
No I haven't Rond. I have heard great things about that lens though and it would be personal preference to upgrade as the Sharpness and AF I hear are similar. The real only difference is not needing an adapter, the minimum focus distance is better on the 100-500 for macro, and the extra 100mm. If I had the 100-400 mk2 already, and a decent amount of MP to crop in post, it would be hard to upgrade to the 100-500 at least for right now. If I had neither lens and have an RF mount mirrorless camera, I'd buy the 100-500.

Hi kevin, so this lens equipped with Canon R7 it's 500 x 1.6 = 800mm maximum focal lenght? thanks in advice!
@KevinNordstrom
@KevinNordstrom 5 месяцев назад
That is correct. It's the equivalent focal length of 800mm because of the 1.6x crop
@Chris-NZ
@Chris-NZ 5 месяцев назад
I have the 100-500 more or less permanently on my R7 and I’ve been staggered at the sharpness and reach. It’s the only long zoom (I don’t have any long primes) I own and paired with the 24-105 4L on my R5 I can cover everything from 24 right out to 800 without feeling I’m carrying a boat anchor, being retired that really comes into play 😀. It’s hellish expensive here in NZ but on the buy once buy right philosophy its still a good call. Cheers .

My main camera has been the Canon RP for the last two years. Only been using the nifty 50 and kit lens it came with. Been saving for the 100-500mm. Any issues running the two together? Haven’t seen many with that combo on RU-vid
@KevinNordstrom
@KevinNordstrom 9 месяцев назад
No issues with the RP and the 100-500. It's snappy and quick and tack sharp. The only downside is the RPs 5fps. It's not ideal for wildlife photography. The 100-500 is the best lens I've ever owned.
@KoenKooi
@KoenKooi 8 месяцев назад
The 100-500 works fine with the RP. But for my size of hands I strongly preferred having the EG-E1 mini grip attached, it made everything feel more balanced when shooting for a full morning.
