Hi Kate, it is not an issue of the lens. It's an issue of the electronic shutter. It occurs with high speed sync while using the electronic shutter. So for portrait photography better switch off the electronic shutter. I have the RF 28-70mm 2.0 lens too. I had the same issues like you because I have forgotten to switch of the electronic shutter. I took some photos for a young couple with this lens and my R3 during my holiday in Kenya and used a yongnuo yn200 flash and a softbox. The photos were awesome with this lens but a lot of them were spoiled because of the electronic shutter as I forgot to switch it off. So a lot of the photos had stripes. After using the mechanical shutter with high sync there was not any longer an issue.

isnt this an explanation for horizontal stripes? then I'd say "yes definitly" and it happens with some artificial light sources (on my camera I cant use flash with e-shutter though) but the stripes are always horizontal for sony cameras. do canon read out the sensor vertically? then it would make perfect sense.

I bought my original R6 just to get this lens. Now I have the R6mkii and this Lens. Like it a lot. No issues for Me as I never use the E-shutter.

Hi, The lens weight can be a problem with the light weight bodies. Using the heavier setup over time will make you stronger or get 10 lbs barbell and work with it the strengthen your wrist and hands.

Agreed, the weight becomes uncomfortable but it makes up for it in convenience. I am personally on the fence, not sold on its Widest aperture sharpness performance, curious of you notice its softer then your primes at F2? It could have been my copy.

The weight is intense but I'm finding that I'm picking this up more often than my primes these days out of convenience I havent noticed much of a difference at 2.0 but I will def try to compare this week and try to put a video up on the comparisons

I’m not giving mine up, I find I shoot at f2 most of the time. Add a profoto light on a stick with connect pro trigger you can set it HSS 1/5000 sec at f2 on auto iso, TTL flash and the pictures are perfect every time, so happy with it

Hey! I've made some setting adjustments and am now not having any troubles with this lens and its quickly becomming one of my favorites. So amazing! I love pairing this with my profoto gear. You say you're shooting with flash most of the time, what do you photograph?

I live in Canmore :) My wife is a photographer here in the Bow Valley (Mike and Naty). Would love to hear an update on this lens, as we have 35 1.4, 50mm 1.2 RF but are trying to decide whether to pick up this lens.

this does look like a shutter issue to me, be sure to switch it to mechanical shutter and test again. i will most probably be getting that lens for events :))

Would agree if it was under artificial inside lighting, but in outside ambient light - I wouldn't say so personally.

I know about these stripe issues, that’s why I sold my r6 and upgraded to r5. Even sometimes I see noise at iso 100 and 200. It seems something related to sensor , you know signal to noise ratio. You may switch to r6 mark 2 or r5 . Best of luck

There’s no stripe issues with your r6 its your settings

It could be a lens to camera connection issues where the contacts aren’t connecting properly causing flickering in the exposure metering. Try on, mounting and firmly remounting the lens to ensure the contacts are firmly connected. I’ve had similar issues with lens connect connections, which resulted in this in the past.

I went with the RF 24-70 instead, as the 28-70 is prone to focus breathing. I do however admire the image quality of the 28-70 more. I will however somewhere in the future invest into the RF 50 1.2, just because of the bokeh.

@@bokehbiz Yes! If I would lose all my lenses in the fire, the RF24-70 would the be the first one I would buy again. It is my take everywhere lens. It just works! However, for more bokeh adding a prime is a really nice thing.

Hmmm, a 28~70 lens that weights 1430 grams, lovely. I think that I stick to my 28mm Summicron F2 @ 255 Grams. Where do these manufacturers think they are going with al this? Hope you have sorted your issue out by now.

I have this lens for quite some time now and never had such issue. To me your issue is more likely to come from the shutter in the body than from the lens. Did you check wether switching to electronic shutter has an effect on this issue?

I have that "problem" on different lenses. It is not a problem on that cameras you can have it with different lenses on different cams. Some lenses are very "good" or "sharp" that you have this noise in special situations. You can fix it in Lightroom. I have it often because I shoot in Nightclubs. Most I have this on my Sigma 14-24. in the corners. I have it on my 5D Mk IV, too. My English is not so good to explain in more detail. 🤗

Do you shoot with the hood? Might be a shadow from the hood. Maybe? Havent experienced this phenomenon on mine.

I'd wondered that as I've had shadows from hoods before but no, I only use the hood when its bright out and the issue only displays in low light situations

I currently have a 85mm F1.2 on my R6. Really debating if I want to pick up the 24-70 or the 28-70. Such a hard choice.

I had a really hard time making this choice too but it was the F2.0 vs F2.8 that was the decision maker for me. Do you do a lot of photography in low light? If you do, the 28-70 might be the better choice

It is an issue with fast glass vs. 2.8. The look of the photos is different. Being able to shoot at f2 creates a different look. The background rendering is different. 1.2 is a completely different animal. You have to make sure your focus is perfect. If the face is at an angle one eye will be in focus and the other out of focus. The beauty is in the skin rendering. Sharp eyes with slightly blurred skin is beautiful!

I've had mine for almost 2 months and rented it a few times befor buying it. It does everything good. Portraiture, wide shots. Images are sharp and bokeh is good enough. But, its not great. Its a do everything good lens.

Are you using the mechanical shutter or are you using silent mode when you have the issue? If you’re using the electronic shutter that is most likely an LED lighting problem that a lot of wedding venues and locations have so the cure is to simply use the mechanical shutter.

That definitely looks like led lights combined with not a mechanical shutter. Probably electronic shutter causing this problem. The lens wouldn't/shouldn't cause that problem

Yes it is definitely an electronic shutter issue! I had the same experience one time at a wedding but changed immediately to mechanical shutter and it was sorted! Even electronic first curtain can cause it. It’s lights flickering and shutter speed not in sync. Zero got to do the with lens.

Are you using electronic shutter? I've found electronic shutter to sometimes cause similar effects to what you've shown on my r5s. Don't know how that error would be a lens issue. Seems more like a shutter issue. I've used this lens and loved it, but I found it a bit slow to focus at times. It's also super chunky.

2:25 Looks scary, but I don't see any technical explanation on how that could come from the lens itself. Were these outdoor samples shot with artificial light present, too? What was the shutter speed? Was electronic or mechanic shutter being used?

I was able to reproduce those awful photos while using electronic shutter and artificial lights. There’s no issues while using mechanical shutter.

I personally don’t use electronic shutter it’s a risk with the R6 & R5. You will get some funky pictures and ruin shots. I own the R5 & R3. I only use electronic shutter on my R3 because of the stack sensor the R3 doesn’t have any issues. But I will never use electronic shutter on my r5.

Interesting!! Every time the issue has displayed its been with artificial lights present. when I compensate with my own lighting it dissapears. I've recently had this show a couple times on my 85mm lens. When I was noticing the issue, I played with all my settings, including varied shutter speed to see if i could change the outcome and it was pretty consistent WIll def need to do more research on the electronic vs manual shutter!!

Ive got it but dang its a brick. The lens is flawless. Your issues are with the camera. Ill go ahead and say it….theres too many settings, and yours are off.

100% I have been able to modify the settings in camera and the lens is now working perfectly! Yes its a beast!!
