Cool video, you achieved to capture my attention without a second of music and pretty minimal editing so props to you!

I bought this lens as a stop gap to the more expensive 100-500. It is so small and light and really is a joy to use. I’m actually not that interested in the 100-500 anymore as this guy can fit in the bag in almost all adventures and gets you easily 85% of the quality. Good enough for the price!

I did the same.. was shooting ski films and I’d did everything I needed it too and now I don’t wanna carry a big lens haha

How do you feel about it's ability to capture action? Fast enough? Ive been looking at it for sports. My boys do soccer, taekwondo, etc and I want to get shots whether I'm close or in stands. I know 400 will cover most all distance I'll ever need but concerned with its ability to keep up with indoor and outdoor sports.

I was going to comment the exact same thing. I cannot justify the extra 2,000 USD for 100mm and 1 stop compared to the 100-400. I decided to buy an R10 instead of a teleconverter to get a little more reach. (not much price difference used) So 400 gets me to 640 equivalent, sufficient for some birds. Then I got the 800/f11 for small birds. I can pack both lenses plus an RF-L 18-150 in a small backpack and I have a very complete kit that's under 9 lbs complete with accessories. BTW, Matthew has proven it's not really the lens, it's the photographer that makes the shot.. These are really nice shots he's taken... all of them. Great work.

This is by far the most illuminative video about this remarkable lens - thank you so much Matthew! Almos a love story 😂I must also have it for my R6 II, because our Swiss mountains are high with steep access.

Hi Matthew, I am retired and shoot Landscapes as my hobby. I use this lens with my R5 and it’s fantastic. From my experience I found sharpness at 400mm to be good. I used it on Macro shots and it works great. I also have the RF15-35 2.8 and the 24-70 2.8 which are sharper, but at a cost. I have planned the trip of life to Iceland next year and taking this lens as my third lens and leaving my 70-200 2.8 at home. Thank you for your video.

Thank you for your video because we all focus on f4 or 2.8 lenses and we don't know how far we can go with cheaper lenses. Thank you.

So your "soft" mountain photo from that beach shot can be many different things for why it's soft. It doesn't mean it's the lens, although the 100-400 is known to be softer in the higher focal range, it could be the weather, the atmosphere, haze, etc. Your praises of the lens though are spot on.

Great video with lovely pictures! I am shocked that you are not getting more views. I have the 100-500mm and also 70-200 2.8 but I am still considering this for when I go skiing with my family, those white L zooms are great but they are bricks. Video production feedback: I was getting a lot of distortion in your voice, maybe use a pop filter.
@matthewlittlewood
@matthewlittlewood 11 месяцев назад
I agree on the pop filter too! Thankyou! I’ll get one for the next studio video I do and as for skiing.. this lens is friggin great

I have this lens coupled with an R7 and take photos of mogul skiing for fun / for memories of my children and its just AMAZING! Ok it's not one of the top lenses out there but for the price point I just don't see anything in this price range coming close to what I get!

I'm with you on the topic of its not perfect but it's bloody good for what it is. Of interest to you, I use a Canon XF605 camcorder in with my Canon c70. Now the c70 is a Netflix approved bottom end cinema camera, the pics are buttery, BUT the 605 gets on the fly razor sharp shots the c70 cant.. 25 -382mm L series glass. Like people in photography, people over here in video land are slowly realizing its about how well you use the tool, not always the tool itself.

Hi, great video. I was thinking it would be more worth it. I have a Canon R10 and I want a telephoto lens for animals. I automatically thought of the RF 100-400mm. Native and with high focusing speed in addition to the low price (in my case 600 euros). On the other hand, there is the option of the sigma 150-600 contemporary, with a higher price (800 euros) + adapter (70-100 euros). What do you think is more worth it, losing those important mm in bird photography or the focusing speed in addition to perhaps other problems you have for not being Native?

You have captured some super pics there. I have and love both the RF 100-400 and RF 100-500 and have found both incredibly sharp to the extent I wouldn't want to try to tell them apart. If a very distant subject is blurred I'd be more inclined to suspect atmospheric haze. At least that's my personal experience. I love them; amazing lenses. The 100-400 could be my fav for daily use because it's so light. It can go anywhere.

Hi Matthew, just discovered your channel when I was searching for ideas for a lens for my Canon EOS RP, which I got as a gift from work. I have two lenses, the 24-105 that it came with it and a 50mm that I bought myself. I am far from a professional photographer, both in skill level and ambition - I just always wanted a decent camera with changeable lenses and now I have one. I have a couple of questions if you care to coment. Firstly in so many reviews on photography generally, it always seemss as if they are talking about people who are looking to sell their photos or build portfolios and it always seems to be about people who aren't like me .. even the comments seem to be from people with greater ambition and skill than I will ever have, so I wondered if you had any comment about what a good third lens might be for someone who just wants to take photos of family and local scenery/wildlife. I am thinking about something that can zoom decently, I am not going to start stalking animals and getting in close, so I need something to just help me get a little closer than my current zoom. Hence my looking at the 100-400 as an option - do you think this is something that will complete my lens family or would I be better looking at something else? I was going to ask about post photography as well, but I won't because I know I'm never going to be that keen on getting the perfect photo, but if I do want to do post work, are the basic tools like photoshop sufficient to improve any images? I haven't even started working on that yet ... I'm just trying to get the best images I can from the equipment I've got. Really enjoyed this video and you have a new subscriber. Cheers, Mike

those two lenses you've got are what i started with and they'll do great! dont worry about buying new stuff for the sake of it. maybe a wider lens even. and for post proscessing just follow your curiosity and watch a bunch of different people and you'll find what you like :)

Hi, I buy recently an r10 for replace old 1200d, I have the sigma 18-300 with adapter and I like it because I can use in every situation. Do you think rf 100-400 could be better in every situation from 100mm to 300? I have find one used for 400 swiss franc.
@Jerecek
@Jerecek 21 день назад
I didnt need this lens but found it second hand never used. And I love it! Only depends if you use Sigma as all around lens the 18-100mm could be missing. If purely as a zoom- go for it.
@enrico0110
@enrico0110 21 день назад
Thanks, yes I use sigma in all range. Is very versatile. I Think canon could be better because is only a 4x. I don't like to change lens during a travel.

@@enrico0110 Downside of 100-400 would be the lower range of 100mm. Its still pretty “zoomy”.

From all the different reviews I’ve watched , no one has mentioned overheating on the R6 Mk ll. They’ve also somehow optimised the battery, you get more photos out of it compared to R6. I’m also looking into getting a R6 Mk ll or the R5 Mk ll when it comes out😊

Hi Matt, You said the lens is not great for sport, but for the price, what do you think? I'm an Aussie shooting cricket and the pro lens is just out of my league. What are your thoughts? Thanks!
