Canon announced the 5.2mm f2.8 DOUBLE fisheye 180 VR 3D lens, specificalyl for the Canon R5 (sdp.io/r5) and 8k video. It looks crazy, but it might be crazy like a fox. See, this lens is designed to create video content in the 180 VR format which can be viewed through Virtual Reality headsets like the Oculus Quest (sdp.io/quest), which we use. There's a problem, though: Almost nobody actually uses 180 VR.
Tony Northrup discusses who actually will use this lens and why the format might never gain popularity.

when you do VR, you are splitting the resolution. with an 8K sensor, that means you get a 4K VR video. people were "misled" when they bought something that had 2560x1440 resolution and wondered why the video was so soft, only to learn that each eye got 1280x1440. And the true view is more like 1280x1280 in each eye for this example. Those "5.2K" cameras don't really advertise that videos would be half that resolution.

It's worth noting that, when you talk about the 120hz refresh on a VR headset, that's how fast it's updating the image displayed on screen based on the movement and direction of your head, where if that's too slow, the fluid in your ears mismatches the signal from your eyes, and it makes you sick. The frame rate of the *content* you're viewing using that headset is something different, and all the traditional pros/cons for faster/slower framerates apply as they do in traditional non-VR mediums - where a slower 30/60hz obviously isn't a nice, but it won't make you sick.

At 12'39" I managed to freeview a stereo pair, after establishing whether to cross my eyes or set my eyes to focus on infinity: parallel viewing. A bit of a success, brief as it was. Most of my life of travel has been chronicled using the post war Stereo Realist camera created by Seton Rochwhite. I've have several and the best one optically was one of the earliest, built by the David White company in 1947. I enjoy stereo slides in my battery handviewer still. All that aside, 3D Stereo photography and cineography will come of age when we are unencumbered by headsets, or clunky eyeware and the like. In science and industry it is a major tool. There is also a book co-authored by Brian May illustrating the Apollo spaceflight era of stereos.

When I saw this lens I was amazed by how cheep it was for such an unusual lens, the second thing was a suspicion that canon had made this with a customer. I wonder if Holywood wants a 5D like small 3D camera for films. We have seen 5D's used in films like Mad Max where they need a small cheep camera to chuck on something for a shot and not care if it brakes (compared to some high end camera it's cheep). Facebook is also doing a push for more AR content so maybe it's them & google also comes to mind.

Understand a massive issue with 3D 180 suffers from vertical parallax issues and this corrects that and will be a game changer for the future of VR. Most high end 180 are from dual body dual lens rigs and this new setup by Canon halves that price. To have a R5 for fixed perspective and 180 VR is incredible for flexibility.

Hmm... I'd like to watch a well-made movie like Rogue One in 180 on a headset. I think the 180 field of view is the sell, and the stereoscopic part is just so it doesn't feel weird. Not sure what it would cost to shoot regular cine and 180 takes. It would probably involve retakes, but maybe that's a fraction of the overall cost.

I absolutely love VR 180!! But it needs to be 60fps at the minimum, maybe even 100fps. Headsets will be light and comfortable in 2 years, and the vertigo will be completely eliminated. I'd love a $3000 solution like the Z CAM. It needs to be on a gimbal of course, otherwise you feel dizzy. I want to be in the future NOW, so I'm already shooting it (Insta360 EVO). Apple's VR headset may be leaps and bounds above everything else. AI will be able to post process bad quality and make it high quality 10 years from now. As long as you shoot today, and have something, it'll be repaired and viewed in the future. But if you don't shoot in VR at all, you'll have nothing.
@cppguy16
@cppguy16 2 года назад
I think this lens is such a waste, it doesn't use half the sensor area. You don't need 8K for VR. Yes, 8K horizontally, but 2x4K sensors are 8K, you don't need real 8K. Two sensors and 2 fisheye lenses is much more preferable, like the Z CAM. Much cheaper, too.
@nafnaf0
@nafnaf0 2 года назад
@@cppguy16 This is not true at all. A standard VR180 file uses a 2:1 length to width video capture. A standard sensor is 3:2. If your sensor size is exactly wide enough to film 8K, it would be 7680x5120, or a 39.32MP sensor. A standard 8K VR180 video is 7680x3840. So you would be using 75% of the sensor. 16:9 video only uses 84% of the sensor in the best case. It's not terrible to use a single sensor for VR180 and solves many of the problems others have mentioned. In a few years from now when they are cheaper and more readily available I'll probably get one, but I'll need a 1TB CF Express card to support all the data

I was asked a long time ago if 3D and VR are tha future. My response was only if it fits the content. For example if you have an idea you can deviled that idea in a picture, video, song, book, website, video game, with features that maybe suitable for it such as surround sound, film, 3D, VR, panorama imaging, etc. First find out what way you want to express your idea and then pick what media and format best suits that content.

Smart phones will lead the way toward 3D and maybe even bring back 3d displays. There is enough separation to place 2 cameras far enough apart to mimic human vision.. Then display that onto a 3D capable display and it will give the video/image into that mythical 3D pop photographers are always looking for. The 3D display will also be using eye tracking to create foveated rendering to even push the realism further.

Good coverage of the topic. It's not going to take off until the VR headsets are confortable and the ecosystem easy to use. Also the VR content consumes a lot of data traffic, becouse watching low res content in VR is bothersome and HD is not enough. But is worth keeping an eye on this. 180 VR is good almost for every topic, but 360 VR could have some specific situation where it would be worth, like environment exploration, both interior and exterior. The comprehension of the environment proportions is much better in 3D. I imagine the tour of an house you want to buy, or an hotel: you can move the video back and forth, pause, and then look around in that specific point similar to a real 3D virtual tour. In the future, AI will be able to transform the environment of the video in a real 3D space that you can navigate freely instaed of a predetermined path.

Tony it is now 2 years later. Apple has entered the VR/AR market and Canon just released a second lens for the R7 and yet a third lens promised this fall. I think now is a great time to update this video. I think a lot of issues you addressed here are still valid, but things may be changing in some areas. I own the R7 and the $1100 lens is still a lot, but it would be something new to do and some of us would enjoy making VR content since we have the gear (I own the Apple Vision Pro). Content on the R7 would be easier to deliver since the files are smaller. Hard to know if there is a pay off down the road but I think the education market, medical research and procedures, and even the showcasing of products (Gucci, for example, did a fantastic VR/AR documentary recently on Apple Vision Pro), not to mention entertainment, are all possible applications for this tech. It could be the future so paying some attention to is would be a good thing. I assume the way most content created in 180º VR would allow for head movement as you'd only be viewing a smaller "crop" of the scene (hence the need for 8K or higher) and you have a full 180º to look around in. Of course, it might be weird to look around in 120Hz while the motion of the content is only 30 or 60 fps... In any case, it's a cool lens. I'm sure as the years go by Canon will have RF mount cameras that can shoot 8K in 120fps that would make VR content much more natural.

The Vuze cameras helped grow the VR video creator community. They still are the currently best pro-sumer VR cameras (while they last at B&H). They were working on the next generation camera when they ran out of money. There are many pain points to watching VR videos currently, but hardware and software are developing steadily. It is really sad that they did not have enough resources to last. At some critical point, there will be a new "Kodak" that will time the entry of a new xR camera perfectly with the necessary improvements in xR video processing and xR video viewing capabilities to become a behemoth. They'll still be usable in 5 or 10 years when we'll have 8k/120p available and that lens will still be here and working perfectly, unlike those all in one devices. So while this is probably just aimed at porn industry to be honest for now, I think it's a good move from Canon, like you said, 100% of the pie is better than a chunk of a shrinking pie. And who knows we might actually get some good content coming out with that kit.. The manual focus though might limit things quite a bit.. Either everything on tripod or need of a real film crew to handle everything..

I love the idea of VR, I love my Valve Index headset and the games I play on it. The immersion and just next level to the gaming experience is a show for where the industry of interactive content is going. That said, the whole VR/3D concept is one that has been struggling to get into motion. With gaming it took until the Quest (arguably the Quest 2) to make it not just affordable for the general consumer, but also have a great enough market to justify more development of games with VR. So over the next few years I can foresee the VR gaming industry continuing to grow as more high end and affordable options are developed and games are developed for people to play. But that leads to the issue with VR video. The issues of VR video are for the most part listed in this video, and I agree with all of them. Creating professional content for VR is a challenge, even professional 3D is questionable due to the issue of demand. But it gets into the circle issue of why make hardware for something that has no content, and why make content for something that has no hardware? I do believe that 3D phone screens will probably be the biggest push to validation of this type of production, but I think in the meantime independent creators should continue to make use of the resources we have and develop content for it regardless. Unless there is something to consume with new hardware, not many people will buy it. Here is where I think we're already in a good situation and should move forward. Travel Vlogs. Unlike films where you need to be focusing on a specific framing and have everything carefully laid out and presented by the creators, with travel vlogs and other similar types of content, being able to look around is a benefit! There are things constantly going on when a creator is walking around, so being able to look around not just allows you to experience more, but also gives you replayability as you can see the video from at least 4 key perspectives. In terms of just pure 3D content, there are some ideas that I would like to see if are possible, but will be trial and error for sure. A major thought I have had is an answer to the issue of the video being unmoving in 3D. If you move your head or tilt it in any way, the video will stay static in the way it was filmed since it isn't 3D. So What if you are wearing a VR headset and it puts you in a cinema or other type of room environment where you are looking at a screen, and each eye will see the screen in the room, but only show the corresponding image (left eye gets left image, right eye gets right image). I'm not sure how the brain would process that, but if it processes it as intended to create the 3D effect w/o issues, then you can look around, tilt your head, and nothing will be jarring since you're then looking around in a virtual space.

I think the most interesting VR camera is the insta360 one R. Because it is so modular, it can do 180 3D vr, 360 VR, and can also be rebuilt to just work like a gopro type action camera. That and it also has a rig to mount it to DJI drones which the potential for filmmaking is incredible. But i agree that both the capability to consume and shoot content needs to be readily and cheaply available for a technology to catch on.

12:53 Actually, I'm pretty sure you _can_ get a live preview in VR... If you use Canon's phone app, fullscreen the video, and then put your phone in one of those $6 Google Cardboard style headsets from Walmart or the like, you should be seeing what the camera sees, in VR, in real time. (At least that was my immediate thinking while watching the Canon promo video.) Obviously not as nice as my multi-thousand-dollar PCVR setup, but functional!

So I'm confused is the VR 180 on the Canon 8K or Just 4K being it looks like its only using half the sensor for each side? Im a HUGE lover of VR and still use my Vuze to capture 5.7K video with it but i just cant justify 6 Grand on lenses and a body for onky 4K resolution. That's just not enough resolution for decent clarity when its stretched out like that even if it is on a full frame camera....cause, well half the sensor isnt full frame anymore and you lose the benifits of full frame simply by using that lens. Shame. For the life of me I don't understand why someone doesn't take the wide open market with no competitors right now (though a small demographic) and make an 8K Vuze XR style camera and simply add better stabilization to it. I mean we have cell phones now doing 8K. I have an idea where im going to take two smart phones that are 8K capable, use two fish eye adapters, and stitch them together in post. I wonder if i can beat the resolution of the Vuze by just doing it myself. No harm in trying.

@ProgrammistMusic
@ProgrammistMusic 2 года назад
watching VR in 30fps is pretty unwatchable indeed, also 4K is not enough for a sharp image. You need at least 5K/60 to get a decent image and starting from 6K/60 it starts to look very good. Unfortunately CANON's apprach can only fail this time, unless they come up with a 6K/60 capable camera. I am producing music videos, in 2D of course, but i am also using the Insta360 EVO for some additional one takes just to have them in stock for the future. The EVO records in 5K/30 and the quality is not really that good, so i am enhancing the videos with a software to 60fps and upscale/clean to 6K. Still, this is not near the quality to real 6K/60. I am waiting for a decent solution, which can at least record 5K/60 natively with good lenses and sensors.

This lens came to my attention two nights ago when perusing through the Oculus Quest Metaverse store where it was demonstrated by a young film maker who created a musical dance video. Immediately from the very start of the music video I was absolutely blown away as the opening scene took place within an elevator crammed with people. With my Oculus Quest 2 headset on, siting on my couch I turned my head from left to right feeling gob smacked with the never before experience that made positioned my fully immersive perspective as though I was also huddled within the elevator as I turned to see the gentleman and lady standing each by my side with one of the actors who was standing in front of my surprised me as she turned her head and looked me in the eye acknowledging my presence. My 2D Go Pro Max is about to get shelled because I am definitely purchasing this complete game changer of a lens and the Canon R5 that is the only camera that is able to capture footage that if it is a short or full feature film, the viewer will be for the first time in cinematic history not given one perspective that the camera operator shoots from, this will enable viewers to move within the scene and watch the film from any perspective they choose. As far as wether or not there is a demand or not, this is a true opportunity to be one of the first pioneers in creating our own independent platforms within the Metaverse because you can, as I have done and will be doing again, create your own Occulus Quest Metaverse space as a developer for free. Also, the 3D TV”s that fizzled out is no comparison to the current commercial applications of using such a cutting edge vr camera technology within the Metaverse BECAUSE we now have the block chain Cryptocurrency that is part of the new virtual reality commerce where uploads will be available to be offered as NFT”s that motivate individuals to own a share of the film or debut artist film. Imagine if we had the opportunity to own a piece of Michael Jackson’s epic Thriller video that has gone done in history as the most successful music video of all time. Now we can.

360 is going to continue grow in bounds, and I am so stoked canon jumped out on this one similar to how they changed the game with they OG Mark 2…I been filming 360 content for headset and for 2D output, I agree with what your saying about jumping into moments in the future, it’s one of the coolest things for sure, I have done it now with people in the same location as the footage was shot 3 years difference in time on one project and the pay of was incredible. Live streaming 360 is amazing and just the fact that you have so many ways to use the same file after filming is really going to be a game changer if the quality can continue to rise with more people creating content. We just need to continue experimenting I think so many people have not really explored all its potential, I use it in almost all my projects now after starting to integrate 6 years ago and really only see my use increasing with this new release, I hope you follow this release more! In short: People who use VR daily, understand this product, others don't. Tony seem to be the latter. I can easily spend 12hrs straight in vr playing "games", watching videos or doing other stuff, regardless if it is 3D or 2D content without any fatigue. The immersion and sense of isolation is great fior me. If there was more content I would fully switch monitor or TV screen to VR for pretty much everything. Not everyone feels the same way tho. Some cannot last more than 15 to 30 minutes, whether it is first or subsequent use of VR. The lens will sell like a fresh buns for sure.

Can I think of taking the file from R5 and inserting it directly into the Oculus Quest 2? Without any PC processing or post-production work? Canon saves the two points of view in the 8k frame exactly where and how the Oculus wants them to reproduce the original VR 180 3D scene? in this case I believe there is a future.

Call it xR. x is a variable that allows for all the variants. 2D/3D ; still/video ; "framed"/180/360(or any other FOV) ; live/pre-recorded; interactive/linear ; 3Dof/6DoF ("volumetric video") ; purely-virtual (VR)/virtual+physical (AR & MR). They are all eXtended Reality content, in some ways alike, but each with its own special features.

360 can sometimes be better that 180, it's like a lense, it all depends on what you are going for, 360 is definitely better for interactive entertainment, for example, the "game" face your fears in VR wouldn't work well for 180, it's all about taking audio cue to know where to look, it's less of a game and more of an interactive experience

Panasonic did a stereo lens for the Lumix system (targeted to play back on their 3D TVs) but it was f14, and did not work for video recording bizarrely enough. Just like 3D, great concept but a little ahead of the consumer tech. This lens is amazing and seriously the future of VR moving forward. We just need cameras that can support AT LEAST 6k 60fps with this lens but 8k 60fps is really the ideal spot moving forward. I personally own and use an Evo, pair of gopro cameras and a K2 Pro and if the right camera existed for this lens right now, I would dump all my cameras for a setup like this in a heartbeat. Lets hope the momentum continues and this release gives us VR aficionados enough wind under our market to see more innovation come out soon.

9:40 I have to agree and disagree to Tony. I played a lot in VR and know some friends who do as well. I love Skyrim VR for example. Its not made for VR, so the controls seem a little clunky, but once used to that the experience is what "Role playing" is literally all about. Why? Because if you walk in a dark dungeon, it is freaking dark. There are no lights in the room that would give you a sense of safety. You cant see a thing in the headset if it is supposed to be dark. The surround sound is flat out scary when you dont know the game at first. A big undead monster literally a head bigger than you is charging at you wielding an huuuge axe. Imagine not seeing him and only noticing him as you turn around... You dont get that from playing on a monitor - not even in 3d. I can play that game all day without sickness. But I have to agree with Tony - it is very isolating. Smokers cant smoke while playing, and I cant follow a football game or drink some beer. When you play, that is all you do. You cant really participate with anything going on in your room. I usually play while seated, but still you end up turning and loosing orientation at times. You gotta do what you gotta do in battle after all... Taking off the Glasses isnt hard, but you do need to pause the game during that time since you wont see what is going on. It has happened to me on countless occasions that it was night and completely dark when I finished playing and when I took the glasses off. Luckily I can turn on the lights by voice. So I dont see VR being dead at all, but it wont be mainstream and thus stay expensive. But newer games like Halflife Alyx prove that you can have great VR support in a game. Check out the AirCar Demo also. Of course, VR may always be for First Person games. Can't imagine playing a game like Diablo on it... Anyone wanna try a whirlbarb in Diablo VR in first person? :-)

Maybe a lens like this might be nice for virtual production. It does absolutely need a longer focal length for that though. My reason is that you can create a good depth map from the content which could be used for geometrically correcting lights on your actor in post production. I do admit there is much wrong with this idea, but it is a nice application.

Watching this video reminded me of the 1970s. A new product was just coming out. The experts said it was too expensive, it would never be owned except by a few corporations, and in the end was just a fad. That product was called a Computer. Ever heard of it? I have watched Tony trash this lens twice now. It's obvious he has no interest in VR and no imagination of the possibilities it brings with it. The ability of a dying parent to leave a VR180 message to their young child so one day they could see them. You could record Christmas, Birthdays, Weddings, or any other event to watch later as if you were there again. I personally would pay good money to have VR180 video of my Grandparents before they passed away. Now I just have some photos and fading memories. Just like with computers there will always be people resistant to change, and unable to see the future.

Previewing 3D effects. It is not hard to train yourself to "freeview" or "parralel view" without special viewers. You sort of relax your eyes as if you're falling asleep at your computer. The two images will flow and snap together and you will see it in 3D. Helps if the image is smaller. You can also buy special glasses that work like an old timey stereoscope, except you wear them like glasses. It's easier with smaller images, and on phones and tablets.
