I'm half way through your vid. I agree with your frustrations regarding Canon, but I've also had frustrations with Sony. I've gone down this rabbit hole myself A TON. When the R5 and A7S III came out... I got both (absurd, I know) which actually turned out to be a useful and interesting investment. For those that don't know, you can get indefinite record times out of the Canon R5 if you record externally (e.g. Ninja Atomos or OBS). I believe you can record 8K externally. I've used my R5 for 12+ hours live streams in full frame 4K60 and have shot for hours at a time in 4K FINE recording to OBS. What causes overheating when recording internally is 8K and 4K FINE mode, which downsamples from the entire 8K sensor. People think their only choice is to then use 4K line skip to get around overheating... but this is only the case if you hate crop mode. Crop mode has no line skipping and actually yields a beautiful image. And you get most of that crop loss back with a speed booster. What this means is you can record internally without ANY overheating on the R5 in nearly full frame (visually) if you are comfortable with crop mode. Regarding Sony... it honestly took me a long time to appreciate my camera. Now I use it regularly. My biggest frustration with it is the inability to fully customize the wheels and dials to my liking so upon startup, it's already set (which oddly enough, the A74 gives you). Everytime I fire up the camera, I have to hit the custom dials button to activate my preferences. I've also seen my A7S III overheat multiple times when recording to both cards in a warm room. Update... At 18 min now. A74 is a fantastic camera. Haven't noticed the rolling shutter issue yet, the LCD is a nicer looking than the A7S III and I love that you can turn it on and the custom dials are already set without having to push a "custom dials mode" button. I agree with your thought process in deciding to purchase the A74. That being said, I've seen RU-vidrs challenge pro photographers about comparison images between the Sony A1 and Sony A7S III and often times, the A7S III won or they couldn't see a difference. And the limitations of Sony touchscreens bug me to no end.
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 года назад
Getting both is definitely the best way to find what's best. I did rent a few different bodies before purchasing, and that helped A TON. Thanks for adding this perspective, it's incredibly helpful. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but I haven't had frustrations with custom buttons and dials so far on any of the models. I spent an inordinate amount of time setting everything up when I got the cameras, but since then they keep the custom settings stored right away, which has been really nice.
@CineDesi
@CineDesi 2 года назад
@@tombuck the specific arrangement I like is the rear wheel to be aperture, top rear dial to be ISO and the front dial to be shutter speed. I can only seem to activate this specific preference once the a7s III is on and I hit my “custom dials” button which is assigned to the trash icon. On the a7 IV, there is no limitation with how you customize the dials and they even let you customize what has traditionally been the exposure dial. I vainly hope Sony will update the Sony a7s III to give users the same flexibility as the a7 IV. But I doubt it will happen.

I agree with things you said.. I love the idea of staying with canon and having their RF Lens ( the RF L lenses are great and better lens than GM IMO) but eventually I went the SONY route because of its video capabilities.. and although sony is far from perfect but the FX3 giving me decent image and colors.. My only gripe would be it 12MP sensor which very limiting for photos that’s why I’m opted with FX3 instead of A7S iii.. looking forward to get a7 iv as my photo camera.. Great video Tom!
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 года назад
The 12mp is a tricky one. It's part of what makes those cameras so great for video, but definitely leaves you feeling limited for photo. A big reason I got the a7IV too was so that I'd have a solid hybrid option and it works really well for that. It's been super fun!

The great thing about this video was the focus on the recording limit. When I first started doing videos with a DSLR instead of a dedicated camcorder I was using a friends Canon. I didn't know about the record limit.... until is shut off during a part of a video podcast recording. It became very frustrating because I also became over aware of the time instead of the content. Then I got ahold of a test version of the FX3 and fell in love! Don't regret purchasing one at all! (My picture is me with the FX3 - I call her FoX-E)
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 года назад
I like that nickname haha! The recording limit is definitely a bigger deal than I realized. I was so used to it that I just accepted it as a limitation, but once I was able to use a camera without it, I realized it was definitely a hinderance.

Still don’t know what I’m going to do but you provided awesome insight and information. Thanks for boiling it down!

The R is a very solid camera! And I still thing that for photo-first users, Canon has a lot of great things to offer (of course they're great for video too, but I appreciate that Sony seems to prioritize video in select models).

There are a million options out there. The good news though, is that basically every camera is good. Even my gripes with Canon are ultimately pretty minor compared to the cameras' overall capabilities. I think the best thing to do is decide on which key features are most important to you ("non-negotiables") and then see which cameras do those the best.

Another great one Tom! I had about $1,300 to spend on a new camera at the end of 2021, and literally after months and months of research, I bought an iPhone 13 Pro Max as my main camera and couldn’t be happier. I know it’s the absolute least camera geek choice, but for me who films in multiple situations from a controlled studio, to outdoor car spotting, and also skateboarding, the iPhone just checked so many boxes in terms of quality, easy of use, and compatibility with my Mac and FCPX. and since I have an iPhone 12 already as a phone, boom, I suddenly have 2 cameras that are usable if needed. Hopefully some of the major brands can make a mirrorless that has some serious computational elements, wifi and a seem-less app/interface for about $1000 all-in lens included and maybe even some internal memory. If not I feel like more and more young creators will just get iPhones. Especially since they’re getting better and better every year. And you can usually finance them very easily these days. It’s a wild time for content creation! Keep it up Tom!

So I made the exact switch you did and even did it over a long period of time. Honestly, the biggest thing for me was I started to get frustrated with the Canon autofocus because I was getting used to Sony. I never thought I'd say that, but it seems like Canon's AF hasn't really improved in the last few years. I was literally blown away by Sony's AF. Plus the lowlight and dynamic range were unmatched. I use FX3 + A74 setup and I love it.

very well put! I totally agree. As a musician, the 30 minutes limit on all the Canon below the R5 is crazy, and makes it impossible for entry level musician to film their own recitals. Same case with doing concert multicam recording, the price difference is HUGE if you are getting three 6400 (which does not have the 30 minutes limit for 4k30 video) versus getting three R5, and even then there is the overheating problem, until you step it up to the R5C, which has the Micro-HDMI as you mentioned...just quirks with Canon left and right.

Hi Tom. Love your channel. I've been watching you for several months now as I start to learn about podcasting/streaming. In the past few months I've purchased a RodeCaster Pro2 + an ATEM Mini Pro with some other gear. My 2 main cameras are SONY handycams (FDR AX33 & AX53), with plans to upgrade ASAP. Anyway, the DSLR I had for ~ 14 yrs is a Canon 40D (still shots only), but the 2 FILM cameras I had for many years (before I went to digital) were the Minolta 5000i & 9000i, plus a bunch of lenses etc. FYI, before SONY entered the DSLR/Mirrorless camera world, they bought out Minolta (Konica) around 2006. The Minolta/Konica business also made medical optical equipment, photocopiers etc. Anyway, technology is wonderful - but very expensive and what I've found is most people buy these cameras not to take pictures, but mostly for RU-vid and TicTok footage.

@@tombuck Thank you Tom for taking the time to read my comments and your response, I'm sure you are very busy and have hundreds of followers / comments for each post. I'm a little older than you and started off (as a volunteer) operating an analog sound system - desk, multicore cables, racks of FX gear and amps / speaker stacks. As team numbers are small, I started taking care of lighting as well - rows of parcans (1 set for each colour) & some cyc lights for backwash etc. When the MM guys aren't around, I also look after the big screen. Over time we started using wireless mics, LED lights & then a few years back we upgraded to a Behringer X32 digital sound desk. But no lessons, no training, no support except from books in the old days and the internet now. This is also made harder as I'm also learning chrome/luma/DVE keys, Upstream, Downstream, lower 3rd, bugs, tickers, animated logos - and when you don't have a MAC or many of the fancy software like Ps, FinalCut, DaVinci, or have only started learning about file types like PNG, IXL etc - I'm surprised I'm not totally grey or bald. So thank-you for what you do and the help you provide. Just knowing there are reliable channels like yours that fill in some of the knowledge gaps is helpful.

Interesting video! Our channel uses the Canon eos R. Recording on the MacBook pro with the R does give you unlimited recording time, connected to mains via a dummy battery. Thats the whole reason that we specifically chose the canon eos R for! Of course we do not have your needs and budget and do not wish to go anywhere near 4k for the time. What did you do with all for the lenses? Metabones adapter? If a channel is filming in 1080, we personally do not think that the R can be surpassed in terms of performance to value.

Interesting video. I've tried Sony and stuck with Canon and am quite happy with the R5 (firmware 1.6 eliminated most overheating issues). Perhaps if I was just starting out, I would go Sony, but justifying the time, effort and financial write down to sell an inventory of high quality Canon EF L lenses in order to switch brands is pretty hard to justify in this day and time. The capability of modern cameras by Canon, Sony, Nikon, etc. are all pretty good these days and they tend to leap frog each other as technology marches onward. In my view, of you don't own a lot of lenses or if money, time and effort don't matter to you, then it is fine to change brands constantly. Anyway, nice video of your reasoning.

I made the switch from canon to Sony 2 years ago and I am very happy . it took some time to adjust to the manual aspect of the Sony camera and endless customization but overall it worked well, and I find that Sony has a different approach to the choice of work flow of what camera choice you are shooting with and in my case I needed one video oriented camera and another photo camera system that really made the difference for me. I only wish Sony would be faster in their firmware update and larger in giving more as far as functions sometimes Sony’s logic does not work where you have cheaper camera that will have more functions than an expensive one .that’s the only thing I would like Sony to change mentality wise .

Really great video ! I own a 90D , been shooting canon for 15 years or so ( 450D, 700D ... ) really enjoy most of the time , i was looking to jump to FF with the EOS R but then i got a little more $ than expected and i tried the A7IV as well : o_o . Honestly even the menu felt quite natural ( i was worried with all the bad press about it ), everything felt right even though i never touched a sony system before. I was still on the fence but i feel like for a 1000$/€ more than the R you get a body with way more capability . And i'm not even talking about the possibility of getting native third party lenses on Sony whereas Canon let you use EF or the very very VERYYYY expensive RF lenses . When you see how good and affordable sigma and tamron are ... I feel like Canon hasn't been very kind to its customers for the past 10 years ... limiting everything , selling the brand more than anything or talking only to the ultra $$$ pro audience.
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 года назад
I think Canon got complacent in the early 2010's when they were dominating everything. Earlier Sony cameras offered cool features but weren't super reliable, so I think Canon just kept doing what they do while failing to realize how much the competition had improved and how willing people would be in regards to switching systems. The R5C remedies this a bit, but when the original R5 came out it seemed like Canon intentionally limited it in a few spaces specifically to push people towards the C series. But a full frame C series camera is more than twice the cost of the R5 and Canon didn't seem to realize that instead of saying, "Ok I'll just get the more expensive one" people said, "Ok, I'll give Sony a try." 🤷🏻‍♂️

I haven't used the a7C myself, but from what I understand it's basically the a7III in an upgraded body. Sony never "clicked" with me until the a7SIII, and I think there are a lot of different things combined within that camera that helped to make it something I love using. for studio setups i would go Panasonic box cameras because they have PoE (power over ethernet) basically meaning you have 1 wire going to the camera and you can monitor and configure the cameras from a PC, also they are doing a lot for streaming over IP so you don't need capture cards or video mixers plus they can record in the camera and they are very tiny. but i liked your video just saying this so you can go down a rabbit hole and learn new things if you didn't know. For me for fixed camera setups having easy power, data and monitoring is a thing i value a lot, like you said in the beginning to each their own. I too switched from years of Canon to Sony, but for still photo purposes primarily. My reasons where the Canon lenses vs. Sony lenses. Canon lenses are fine if you spend the money for L glass but as a hobbyist photographer buying Lots of L glass was out of the question. Sony, on the other hand, makes some fabulous mid priced, and even lower priced, lenses that surpass the Canon mid priced lenses. And then there is the size. Canon stuff just seems overly huge compared to Sony. A Canon camera and two or three L lenses required the purchase of a Tenba backpack whereas I can fit the same Sony equivalent in a Peak Design mid-sized everyday sling bag. Great video. Thank you.

Also have a blackmagic that’s done nothing but collect dust ever since the FX3 came home. I love the Canon for stills so the R5C is calling my name. I had the R5 and I don’t shoot video, but there were times when I used an atomos ninja to record footage I was shooting and the micro hdmi port was killing me. loved the camera with the 85 DS, but canon did cripple the system like no teleconverter usage with their 70-200. It also froze shooting in ES several times. After 4 firmwares, I think it got better. I found a used A!, so I’m liking that for travel or a lighter load and been into the Nikon Z system and sold the Z6ii and 7ii for the Z9. Sony has the best lens support with third party manufacturers like Sigma and Tamron. And that’s another negative is the battery life on the R5 and I remember reading it would drop frame rate performance under 60 percent or around there I think. Luckily I already had several Sony batteries from previously owning the A9 and RIV.

As a former Nikon shooter, who switched TO Canon, it never ceases to amaze me that anyone other than new shooters who have no clue as to how to control light or really control a camera, would switch to Sony. I LOVED the darker broody color of Nikon and I love the vibrance of the Canon. I have had several Sonys (really hoping it would be a great system), and although the Sony autofocus is one of the best, the images are super sharp almsot to a "to digital looking point" to my eye, and the A1 is one of the most customizable cameras on the market, they lack one of the most important things about photography...... color; It is lacking. The R is a starter mirrorless like the M series or the old Nikon J series or the early Sony As.. You should have bought the R5 or even the R6 - both are two of the most amazing cameras I have used. At some point in the future, Sony may be a great system if the find where their color is, but as of now..... no way - and again. I have owned 5 Sony's, rented a couple of others and no thank you. And Nikon even with the Z9 is just too far behind with the tech and that is why I switched to Canon. I did in fact, use a Sony for ONE wedding ...... ONCE. . Good luck and welcome to the world of Sony hype. I wish I was the only one that was of the mind that Sony has no color but I am not. I just happened to find that for myself editing photos and relizing that I was pushing my saturation and vibrance past where it should be to give the photos life. And although I do on occasion upsize 1080 for one or two clips to 4K, it is not the same - it just is not. One other thing about record limit - it has to do with import fees and being sold as a stills camera or video camera. Differnt tax rates.

You've definitely got to go with what works for you! Canon has earned a reputation for great color for a reason. I really considered the R5/R6 (preordered the R5 when it was announced), but they're ultimately just not right for me. Hey Tom, Good video. Different from others “I’m switching” videos so thanks for sharing. We at a time that we definitely have an embarrassment of riches of cameras to choose from. For me, I’m actually agnostic and using both Sony and Canon but I started with Sony first. It was interesting how your reference point was from Canon when comparing with Sony. Meanwhile mine was opposite. Starting with no touch menu and everything programmable, I was annoyed with the touch screen and lack of programmable buttons but then I got used to it. Now it’s mostly muscle memory between the two system. As far as the battery life, I had the opposite experience but after hearing what you said, I gave it some thought and think we need to look at the way it is used: - I am a hybrid shooter and shoot more photos and turn off each time as the on/off button is next to the shutter button while with the R5 or R, it is on left side so natural tendencies is not to turn it off. So my experience is Sony’s battery lasting much longer; - Since you’re using the A7S3 for video and probably the LCD screen, turn off the EVF, BT, WIFI and I am sure it will last much longer. There is an airplane mode on both cameras so that should help Since I started with Sony, for some reason I prefer taking stills with it more and adjust the WB when it’s off. But my clients definitely prefer the Canon colors as they nailed the colors as it’s pleasing to their eyes. I use both cameras for stills as needed. I haven’t tried out the A7S3/FX3/A74 yet as I am on the fence or say, I am happy with what I get on thr R5. True it overheats in certain environment and use cases, but my workarounds as been: Short form: - use 4K HQ mode; and/or - add in a Tilta fan and get almost double the recording time that Canon publish for the different recording times. Haven’t tried modifying it with heat sinks yet; and/or - use the regular 4K and adjust saturation Long form: - use video oversampled crop mode from 5.1K to 4K. It crops 1.6x but has no overheating issue. I add on the Metabones speedbooster that gets the crop down to 1.136x which is reasonable; and/or - use an external recorder like the Atomos Ninja 5/5+ As for updates, I guess you can look at it differently. I think Canon should have had all these features from Day One but instead they released it early from business pressures to compete with Sony. Sony is stingy with their updates but when they did big updates with real time eye detection back in 2020 for the A9, they gave it to their A73 and others. So we could look at it as updates that should have been there in the first place or ones that made it much better like Panasonic had on the G9 that made it almost as good as the GH5. Or when DJI had real time active tracking on the Ronin SC and added it to the S. Now that is an update that made it better quality of life. Canon removing artificial timers or Clog3 that should have been there in the first place. But adding some AF features from the R3 is. So from my POV, I guess updates is a good thing when we get features and enhancements we didn’t expect to get vs crippling it. Are you considering the A74 or do you shoot mostly videos?

@@findbinnu Thank you for pointing this out, yes, I've also asked a dealer here about this about the same crop on both.. OK, with that out of the way, I'm leaning towards the FX-3 because of the audio unit and handle. Looking forward to the firmware update if they really implement that.

This is a very good video with to the point information, two thumbs up!! "What adapter for the Sony body are you using for the canon lens"?? I'm a long time canon user and have invested a lot with canon. I'm waiting for the canon R5 MKII hoping it comes with 60 plus mega pixels along with newer features. However, Sony has a 61MP for some time now with articulating screen with touch swipe. If canon disappoints I will be switching to Sony.

The Sigma MC11 is the one I have. It gives sigma EF lenses full autofocus in every mode, but Canon lenses will only have autofocus in photo mode, not video.
@MikeMena
@MikeMena 2 года назад
If that A7iv had come out before I bought the R5, I would have switched to sony... it just came out a few months too late. I also think that Canon is cumulatively WAY WAY WAY WAAAAy more expensive in every way, bodies and lenses AND computer needs to edit video and photo files (yup, even the photo files are super slow to edit if you don't have a frickin M1). I really think canon might be for rich people LOL
@tombuck
@tombuck 2 года назад
The RF lenses are wildly expensive (although they are outstanding). I used to think Sony was more expensive, and maybe that was true at one point, but right now everything seems to be pretty fairly priced and there are decent options at every budget.
@Chris-ey7zy

Canon trying to be the Leica for Mirrorless pro system. Look at how they treat new photographers or amateur or beginning photographers. They could care less about having lower priced lenses. Pretty much most of their lenses are 1k to 3k lenses. They spit on the lower end users because they believe photography will become niche just like how Leica is for the niche photographers as people begin getting used to cell phone photography.

I still shoot Canon because I have so much glass.......but I appreciate so many people moving to Sony to punish Canon for doing stuff like limiting record times on the R5.....it already overheats.....why limit to 30 minutes in the few modes you can enjoy no overheating in.......

Check your settings, I believe it was having Bluetooth or wifi and other things enabled really drained my Sony batteries. I own the A7R3 and the A1 and battery life is very good. I too switched from canon after using them for 20 years because it seemed they purposely would always cripple their cameras, I don't feel this with Sony. The 30 minute recording limit drove me crazy, any shoots for long form video has to be multicam (like concerts) to work around that.

@14:03 by the way, the A7IV also has built in focus breathing compensation. I noticed the focus breathing a few times in the 3 videos in your channel that I just watched. Have you ever tried that feature in the A7IV? And also the focus helper feature is really cool with the colored areas of the image in focus, in front of focus and behind focus. I hope they will also include these features in the A7SIV

I have 2 R cameras and had a M50 which is like having a different system, so I got rid of the M50 and replace it with sony A7C but now I know I want to replace my full canon frame. The reason Lens selection. Plus they do more. Sony is not perfect but they seem to do more

Totally understand the Canon gripes... I have every one of them and then some myself. You hit the nail on the head when you said, "I got tired of purchasing artificial limitations with Canon". That is exactly what that brand has become even with a lot of their cinema and professional lineups. I will look more into SONY. I did a lot with them back in my film and TV days with the F55 and F65. Never really thought about them for DSLRs. Thanks again Tom!

Glad to know I'm not alone! My Sony cams have been great- so much so that I've kind of lost interest in even thinking about getting new cameras, which has never happened before 🤯 My biggest gripe after using them for 2.5 years now is that there are virtually no firmware updates for the most part and the product lineup has gotten really messy, with so many different camera models that have EXTREMELY similar features with one or two huge differences. Just takes a bit more research to find what's best, but they work incredibly well.

Hey Tom, any thoughts on the EVF quality between your A7IV and Canon cameras? I've seen an A7III at best buy and the EVF quality I thought was pretty terrible, harsh colors and contrast, lots aliasing, jumpy and non-smooth, just really bad compared to the Nikon Z6 and Canon R6 they also had, which were very OVF like and smooth. So not sure how much of a jump the 7IV is in EVF quality having not had the chance to handle one. Thanks!
