The RP is a mirrorless 6D mark II and just like that camera, that everyone hated, offers amazing features for the lowest price (I got my 6D2 in 2018 for 1070€ new), such as GPS, tilt display… and an amazing image quality, the colors that that camera shoots out are always mind blowing
All true - I was frustrated that Canon used an older sensor and when you compared that camera to other currently on the market it didn't look great but the reality is- the camera was fine and continues to be fine.. just like the RP :)
how about the in-camera raw processor ? and the quality of color profiles? and in-camera Timelapse movie with exposure smoothing.....but a big improvement of the new menu over older Sony's models is the possibilty to tweak shadows and highlights, not just overall contrast.....
The $999 RP is just killer. And all your points are valid. It is not a wildlife cam, full stop. But 2 big things that I wish it could do: 1. Better e-shutter functionality: I sold mine to fund an R6 partially bc I clocked 25k actuations in 3 mos 2. Dynamic range is pretty poor. But if you don’t shoot long bursts and use light mods and/or flash… no reason you can’t get amazing results
I have owned the RP and currently have an r6 and r7. This is not really an RP vs A1 argument... All these advantages (except the size and weight one, and if we call that better ergos that one too) apply across the rf lineup. Even the charger compatibility: it is not that the RP uses more chargers than an R5 it is that it is 2022 and almost all usbc bricks are PD. Fun video.
True but isn't even a little more painful for Sony that these features are in the budget champ of Canon's line up? Interesting about the USBC bricks. I could have sworn I plugged the RP into the same one as when I tested the R5 and R6 and also car USB that they didn't charge from but I am not positive on that.
I really struggle to adjust to the FV mode but I do think it has great potential once someone gives it a chance. M-fn - well many cameras have multiple custom assign buttons so I give that one a pass.
I'm not currently in the market for a new camera (especially not one that costs 6k) but I found this HIGHLY useful info and appreciate the target audience of enthusiasts who are often wowed by the latest greatest and realistically shouldn't be going for those ultimate professional machines when a budget friendlier and still-excellent quality option exists. Agreed, a bulb timer would be nice - I've had to resort to the Shutter app (Since sony's Imaging Edge app is finicky and doesn't work 1/2 the time) - shutter app has been flawless and allows me to set an exposure time. Would love to see Sony cameras get the flip screen - I shoot a lot of portrait orientation for pano's, or down low - a flip screen would sure help save my 66 yr. old knees. And focus bracketing> That would be SWEET!
As an astrophotographer, I would have killed for that bulb mode on my old canon 5dmk3. I regularly imaged up to 3 minute exposures back when I was still using it, now up to 20mins but with a dedicated astro cam.
Great video Toby. I have to say after looking at the results I'm not sure how many I got right, but I can see that the Canon images are warmer and have a more pleasant hue (to my eye) but when you fullscreen the video in 4k, the Sony images are noticeably sharper.
Been shooting with Sony since the NEX-3. The two features I miss all the time are #1 Focus stacking-extremely kludgy to do manually, and #2 Bulb timer. Sony does do a better job with their intervalometer implementation, though.
Lack of focus bracketing and bulb timer are pretty big fails for the Alpha 1. But for hybrid outdoors shooters, maybe the biggest fail is lack of animal eye AF in video. The R10, R7, R6, R5 and R3 all have animal eye AF in video. I don't know about the R and RP, since they needed firmware updates to get eye AF in the first place. Sony didn't provide animal eye AF in video until the A7 IV. Not even the A7S III or FX-3 have it.
And, I can think of 50 ways right of the top of the dome that the A1 slaps this camera down. However I wish you all the best and hope you sell a bunch of stuff through your links. Also, this looks like a great camera for 1,000. (I mean if you can call a camera with no slow-mo recording "great")
As an APSC Canon Owner, I'd like the RP, but good RF glass is not cheap at all (no way to get used glass in my country with warranty). Third Party is out of the picture if you need/want autofocus.
@@photorectoby I guess R7 & R10 shooters will have to rely on APSC DSLR adapted lenses from Canon Itself or Sigma and Tamron. Only exceptoins are RF35 and RF50. There's no fast afordable zoom in the RF mount by now.
The RP is half the price of the R. Is the image quality of the R double that of the RP? Nope. There isn’t even much difference between the two in Resolution (26 vs 30 mp). If you are looking for an affordable entry in to quality, the RP is hard to beat
I fully agree with you that the most badly needed feature lacking in Sony A1 is the focus bracketing and by the way the stupid shutter limit to 30 secs. Com’on Sony!

haha - we actually had an awesome morning of eagles flying and I did shoot both the RP and the A1 and of course it is ridiculously different. The RP AF is slow, the FPS is slow and the viewfinder blackout means following a bird in flight is difficult! No real comparison there.
Damn better sell all my Sony gear and get the Canon..... Not - ain't gonna happen. It's good to see Canon seems to have caught up with modern technology and delivering some great cameras. Sony definitely needs to update a few things (especially the bracket!!) (bulb wtf) but like you have been with Sony since 2013 (was it that long ago 😳) after canons lacklustre upgrades and the A1 pretty much does almost everything "I" need. The lens selection makes me laugh - canons fan boys still try and voice the moot point - oh yeah just bought the Tamron 28-200 lens 😉 heheh. Great vid Toby although less and less these days I watch comparisons (actually hardly ever now) but enjoy yours 👍🏻🙏
i think the most embarrassing feature is that the Sony touch screens are STILL the worst in the biz. the photo news media has been banging that drum for years and it's still miles behind.
I think you can always find harsh reviews of any brand but I certainly was critical of the 6d2, eos R and Rp. After being on top so long it felt like these were not up to the usual Canon level. But the r5 and r6 are fantastic and I think Canon is back on track. But to your point, even those cameras that I was down on are just fine for many people.
Sony needs to score some easy points and have 1 of their coders use 4 hours to make bulb mode and another maybe 16 hours to code the focus bracketing. Kinda cheeky to say the A1 is heavier, when it's still the smallest flagship by far 🤪🤣😅 I've never experienced not being able to charge my camera through USB-C though. It just always charges when plugged in. And I like that little discreet orange light so my living room isn't lit up like christmas every night. Who am I kidding, the laptop and other devices charging LEDs are already making that happen.
Yes - C'mon Sony score those easy points. And yes a bit cheeky - I probably wouldn't consider owning the Z9 or R3 with all the travel I do and I love that the a1 is so travel friendly. Good counterpoint to the light.
Sony bulb/Timelapse is a real embarrassment. Since they killed the App Store too many lost capabilities have simply been ignored. Like the parent of a neglected child, they pretend nobody wants those abilities because they are ashamed of forgetting about them. Specs are tough since better only counts if everything is better with no holes in the armor. UX however is happily subjective. From physical ergonomics to menu structures and contextual options presentation we all like something different. Personal Torrance for limitations often dominate reviews.
its total clicbait though bro.. the specs fall well short of the A1. ooooh, its 1/6th the cost; and the viewfinder is 1/6th as good.... it has 1/6th the video options! its 1/6th the camera!
