Cant Transfer File from Mac to External Hard drive? Drive Formatted in NTFS?

WARNING!!! Formatting means the same as deleting or erasing! Also I am not responsible if anything goes wrong so do at your own risk!
If you cannot transfer a data/file from your Mac to your external hard drive it may be because the external hard drive is formatted in a NTFS file system which is used for a Windows PC only. If it has a NFTS file system then only a Mac / Apple computer can read it but cannot write to it.
Therefore if you want to move files between a Mac & Windows and vice versa you need a file system that works for them of them (fat32 or expat).
Important Note: Remember when you format a drive you are basically deleting everything on that drive!

For years I have wondered why some external drives allow file transfer between both Mac and PC (these external drives were likely already formatted as ExFAT), or did not allow transfer of Mac files to the external drive (these drives were likely formatted as OS X Extended). I found this helpful to understanding why I couldn't move things and it was exactly the NTFS thing. I didn't want to risk deleting everything so I just used another flash drive that did work on the Mac to transfer my files onto there first and then used my Windows PC to transfer it from the small flash drive to my backup drive. A bit longer, but at least I have everything where I want it now!

Thanks for her video! I have a maschine that I got for Christmas and I was downloading some sample sounds from a website that I liked and I couldn’t for the life of me move the samples over into my hard drive and that was an issue because those samples eat up the storage space on my Mac. This video helped me so much and now I can finally move them all to my external hard drive. You were a huge help my dude!

That's why you should backup your files. The tutorial wasn't completely clear on that, but you should definitely make a copy of your files on your computer before messing with Disk Utility.

If you haven't figure it out yet... Use system recovery on your disk to recover files ... Or take it to a recovery center and pay like 100 bucks or download the recovery software which cost 100 bucks

I have a new Macbook Pro 2021 (Apple 1 Pro) and a new Seagate external drive both APFS Volume and working fine together. However I cannot copy and paste my movies into an older external drive which is NTSF Compressed that I used with my previous mac and has a lot of files on it. I wouldn't want to erase that older external drive obviously but do you know if is there anything I can do to reformat the new external drive to be able to transfer files between these two drives? You never clarified if changing this setting would erase all the info. You also didn't state whether or not this could be done after data has been transferred to external drive. I'm think you are assuming people already know this....? But you know what happens when we ASSuME...?

if we had access to another hard drive to save the files from the one we are trying to change to ExFAT, would we be able to put the files on that instead of the desktop? The reason I'm trying to transfer the files on my hard drive in the first place is because my computer memory is completely full (which means I can't save them on my desktop to prevent file loss).

But How long time it takes for Erasing the external hard disk? For me it's going to take over 24 ours for just erasing. My hard disk is called Elements and the occupied space is 80 GB and almost 920 GB was available but i want to erase it, so I can read and create folders for my collage study materials but I have doubts regarding the time it take for erasing the whole H.disk.

This is not a solution, you are just formatting the external disk under FAT32 but you are not giving a solution to be able to transfer data from and to an external disk NTFS with a Mac. I have the problem, that I have downloaded movies to my Mac but I cannot copy them on my external disk (NTFS) which is the format that can be read by my Samsung TV. The TV does not read FAT32. Thanks

I formatted my HDD two years ago and it was working. I haven't used Windows with this HDD ever since. But now I haven't used this HDD for about a year and it says that it is in NTFS format again. Thanks I was nearly having a nervous breakdown trying for several hours to transfer a few files from Macbook to a external hard drive with no valid information from apple support. In the end I found an old 8GB stick that only has 1GB capacity but was in FAT 32 format and then copy and pasting worked straight away.
