I think this was back in 91 or 92, coz I remember watching this on TV. I was still in high school, just trying to learn but ended up blown away by the energy of these big guys. This was probably one of the first shows I witnessed that Jazz could be a simple entertainment. You know, without any particular knowledge about a standard jazz form or its history, you could tell it's great, and in fact rockin'...at least, that is what I felt and thought.
Nice funky version thanks to Herbie, Wayne, Omar and especially Stanley's thumb bass picking style! It seems that Herbie and guest artists will never tire of exploring all of the possibilities of this song!
With 150 years of combined experience and they can still have that much fun gigging = every morning when they get up they know they are in the RIGHT business. Also wonder what these cats would sound like with Sadao sitting in. Thanx for sharing.
Let's get something straight here, this is a phenomenal version of this tune. Herbie's all over it and really stretching out, Wayne Shorter is absolutely *ON FIRE BABY*, Stanley takes an outstanding solo, and Omar's totally driving it like a mofo. The look on Stanley's and Omar's faces near the beginning says it all. The audio quality is lacking; I would love to get a pristine copy...!
Japan has a very structured society. Jazz is a chance to lossen up and not be so uptight. Classical music is very structured and very full of rules. In jazz, you can take an idea and blow it up and go in a different direction. Freedom, man!
@MrAlaska67329 I liked him in the footprints song for the most part. he was fine there. he had a good sound a diverse solo and a much, much better style. still not my favorite, but easily tolerable on the footprints. but cantaloupe, is a different story. I did like however that he went up to a soprano D to C# instead of playing G G and growled. That was great.
why don't you guys simply enjoy the music and stop wasting your time growling at each other ? life is toooo short to waste time ......... live n let live and most of all RESPECT TO EACH OTHER !!!!!!!!!!!
@JaredAugerot Alright, so at least you loike him in footprints. It doesn't have Wayne Shorter in it, but try Canteloupe Island with Blue Note. It has Joe Henderson, Herbie Hancock, and Freddie Hubbard for the 3 main instruments.
That was amazing! Notice that at about 13:13, the framerate of the video isn't fast enough for omar to be seen moving. It's mad. The only thing I didn't like that much was the sax. It just sounded a bit squeaky and out of tune. Too high etc.
