Marcus Miller has said one of the main reasons he slapped/popped the melody to 'Teen Town' for this particular Night Music episode was so his bass sound would cut through and be heard against the really bright cutting sound of the Yamaha CP Electric Grand Piano that Eddie Palmieri was playing during this performance. Its also ironic & poignant that this show aired only a year after Jaco Pastorius (composer of 'Teen Town' and legendary electric bass guitarist) was so tragically and unnecessarily taken from this world. Respect and RIP.
I wish somebody could get the masters for this stuff and release it.The show Night Music had some truly phenomenal stuff.I kind of forgot about it until I saw this.
This is one of my favorite bass video/clips, lol, I love watching the dude on keyboards getting blown away from watching Marcus slap and thump Jaco's tune here.
I gotta agree with saxshooter and Dstring20. None of the musicians took anything away from this great piece of music. They did what musicians have done for years. They took the song and made it their own for 6 minutes.
Makes you wonder if his assailant had any idea of the greatness he killed? If you dig Jaco, and who doesn't, read the autobiography: Extraordinary and the Tragic Life of Jaco Pastorius, "the World's Greatest Bass Player", by Bill Milkowski. It gives a great insight into the brilliant, yet troubled, life of Jaco. A must for any serious student of the bass guitar!
Thank you for bringing some lucidity to the table. It's indeed a wide open world with many great musicians out there. I must have been to hundreds if not thousands of concerts/gigs/jams in my lifetime. I just can't imagine what it would have been like to grow up missing all that fun because of a narrow field of view.
First time i see this video, Amazing Marcus was soooo young on bass he was amazing here. Here on Congas is master percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo, a MONSTER Conguero. And Larry Harlowe on keys...Wow.
this is about playing in a situation with creative people and making the best of it and having fun. I don.t care what if Jaco did or might do or what choices Hildago made. You go with it in there jam situations. They seem to be having fun and I believe most of us enjoyed it.
its night music, i remember watching it the first time. the very next week if i recall, david sanborn had pharoah saunders on, tried to cut him a bit and was used to wipe the floor with lol. great show though
First of all theres no might to it they are excellent musicans second of all thats legendary David Sanborn on the Sax and Marcus Miller on Bass another legendary bass player like no other this performance took place in 1988 so what do expecet why would they play it like jaco this is there own style and tribute to the late great Jaco and Marcus Miller so called "prickly sound" along with his distinctive style is constantly immitated many, so stop hating on the man
Because he had an endorsement deal with another company at the time, I don't know what company, but I remember him playing other basses in a couple of R&B videos during that time.
both versions are nice but weather reports one is special. more fusion this is the more poppyFunky version. I think this was the time David made the best album straigth to the heart live. Never had seen a better band or preformance since that time
STONEPOLISMUSIC. Jaco Pastorius was posthumously assessed as being 'manic'. I presume he did a few drugs, if any, as touring musician. According to his biography, he walked off the tour bus and on for miles to replace the "lite beer" that was stocked on the tour bus with regular beer. So he was quite the drinker it seems. Jaco Pastorius was beaten to death in a bar, the doorman who was found guilty of manslaughter served 4 months jail, he later became a fan of Jaco and suffers from depression.
Willikers, Marcus slaps the head on this song...sweet! But were would bassist' be without Jaco? A "Portrait of Tracy" will always be the one tune beyond my reach. Another musical genius, like Hendrix, gone before his time due to drugs...its both saddening and sobering!
Any idiot who gatekeeps music and believes he is preserving the sanctity of any given piece of musical composition, does nothing but try and destroy what music is. It is this. It's is the sound of our emotions. It is the sound of our dreams, our desires, our wants and fears and loves. It's is simply the language of our consciousness. The one we all understand. Breaking all cultural and linguistic barriers, music allows us to communicate that which could never be said, in a way that everyone understands immediately. Music is art for God's sake. There is no right or wrong to any art. A creation from the heart of its creator, given unto the world for consumption. Some will love what others hate. Some will find beauty where others find it hideous. So who's right? They all are. A comment about preserving a song, could only come from someone who is not a musician. Just someone who has convinced themselves that because they have "listened" to music for a long time, that they themselves have a valid opinion on what music should and should not be. If possible, those people would do well to find a locksmith, and open up their damn minds for the first time in their lives. And to set the record straight, I'll tell you exactly what music should be. It should be everything.
no, no, don't get me wrong. I don't hate them. I just don't enjoy this version of TEEN TOWN. that's all. my comment might have offended you. i'm sorry.
They might be good musician but this version is not good. When Jaco plays this song, there is this mood as though a stormy weather is coming. this version's bass is too prickly. deforming a song is fine but this version's quality is really low. there is one played by jaco himself on youtube so watch it.
