Update: this is now my most used bike - I am very happy with the purchase and ride it many times a week - PRs and a few KOMs. I had the opportunity to ride the Canyon Ultimate CF SLX 8.0 Aero for a week, and while there's an obvious difference in weight, the largest gain I think with that bike was the aero features. Ultimately, I stand by my opinion that if you are even considering the two bikes, that puts you in a category of rider that wouldn't miss anything with the Endurace. The gains you can make in improving your power are likely more significant than the gains you can attribute to the difference in the two bikes.

Did you end up putting a new decal set on the bike? I got stealth as well and it really needs a little color. Would love to see a pic!! John

john cross I did end up putting them on, but only one side haha. It’s a long story. They don’t fit exactly but the stealth decals behind are not obvious. I’m not a stickler for aesthetics so it works for me. I can’t add pics here in comments but it’s a white decal and looks pretty good

@bensnyder2057 6 лет назад
Dan, I purchased them from here www.etsy.com/listing/259556223/canyon-sticker-bike-frame-decal-cycle and I'd say they were not easy to put on. There are some fine connections between the letters that got a bit twisted. If you were not placing it over the stealth decal, it would be easier as you can set the whole letter set as a whole piece aligned to the down tube. But, trying to get the letters to align perfectly over the existing decal was challenging (and as mentioned not perfect).

I think your thought process is just right. Basically the more comfortable a bike is the more you would ride it. The fatter tyre, the unusual seat post and the more relaxed geometry all add up to comfort.

Main difference is the gear ratio. 36-28 on the ultimate an 34-32 on the endurace for first gear i think. Thats makes a big difference on a big alpine Col for a hobby rider.

Searching for a new bike, the Aeroad was my first choice, but entirely based on the looks. Then started thinking what I want to do with the bike. Climbing and long rides are my main purpose, so it brought me to the Endurace and made me sad at first, cause it didn't look as flashy as the Aeroad. But now.. watching it more and more, I prefer it over the aeroad, not only when it comes to my needs, but also esthetically. Such a beautiful, elegant piece. Just ordered one and really looking forward to meet my new companian. Thanks a lot for the review.

Lovely bike. And being a customer of canyon myself, I think it’s a great choice. However, don’t listen to this dude about using it to get more powerful and to beat folk on race bikes. This was his choice. If you want a race bike, get a race bike. Canyon race/aero bikes are some of the most stuff and comfortable bikes on the market, and I’ll also mention, incredibly fast. I have an endurance bike and I have an aeroad cf slx. There’s a difference. If you want to go fast and want to put all your power through the rear wheel, get the race bike.

Aeron Thomson thanks for the counter point. I hope not to mislead anyone, but my point is that if you are on the fence about these two bikes, the Endurace is very capable and will take you more places (I will be taking it to some crits as well) and if someone is considering the Endurace at all to begin with, I couldn’t see them being an all out racer or else why would they be considering endurance bikes at all?

The 2020 Ultimate CF SL 8.0 is 16.75 lbs stock and the Endurace version is 17.85 lbs stock. That a little over pound in extra weight for the Endurace, which for most might not mean much but quite frankly is a huge difference. Next would be the carbon CP10 cockpit on the Ultimate which is lighter, more aero, and soaks up imperfections extremely well. The downsides of the one piece cockpit is that I believe it only comes in two sizes so it's not going to fit everyone and secondly replacing the unit is hard to source and is more expensive than using individual parts. In the end yes the geometry for the Endurace is very akin to the ultimate but with some slight tweaks and for most part it be hard to notice the difference when riding the bike blind folded besides for the Canyon S15 VCLS 2.0 CF seat post on the Endurace which IMO is where a lot of that extra comfort comes from. Endurace comes standard with 28mm tires while the Ultimate comes with 25mm tires standard. In the end both are great bikes, but since they are exactly the same price and geometry wise they are so close together with the Ultimate still being comfortable to ride yet being over a pound lighter, my pick is the Ultimate.
@chrisyoung8062
@chrisyoung8062 5 лет назад
I own this bike and the ride is fantastic. It feels light and very responsive but at the same time so comfortable. This seat post is a major contributor to that comfort IMO. The only downside with the seat post that I have found is if you want to use a saddle with an oversized carbon rail such as a Bontrager (for some reason the Montrose is extremely comfortable for me), which uses a 7x10mm rail, you won't be able to. There is a seat clamp available from Canyon for carbon rails that is 7x9mm, but not for 7x10mm. BTW that clamp is very much overpriced at $40. You may or may not know that the seat post is actually made by Ergon, not by Canyon. Anyway it's a great bike and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an endurance bike that also has a little race available.
@bensnyder2057
@bensnyder2057 5 лет назад
Excellent details on the seat post and rail, did not know that! I still don't think I really fully appreciate the positive impact the seat post dampening has on my ride - I really don't notice it but that's probably exactly because it is functioning as designed (if I were riding a rigid post on the same road, it'd likely be much rougher). People often mention how much they can see it moving when they ride with me.
@chrisyoung8062
@chrisyoung8062 5 лет назад
@@bensnyder2057 The movement is noticeable by riders behind you. As much as I'm complaining about the inability to use the Pro version of the Montrose saddle, in reality I don't really need the carbon rails for compliance. I'm using the Ti rail version and it's just fine and it only weighs slightly more than the carbon version.

I bought the exact same bike recently and have a few rides under my belt and quite like it. I am coming off of a BMC SLR01 Team Machine. The BMC was stiff as all get out and read your mind, while this bike is noticeably slower to react it does have many positives. For example, what I find really nice is that it doesn't bob side to side with each turn of the pedals like a race rig does. I've also found that I do not adjust my position on the bike nearly as much. The BMC would rattle over imperfect terrain, forcing me to reset myself on the seat. This thing just floats over stuff. No doubt the 28 tires, tubeless in my case, help with that. Still on the same roads, I am less beat up and not fighting the bike over less than perfect roads. I'm also 200lbs and my worry was that the seat post would flex too much. It's definitely not as explosive as the SLR01, but then again that was a pure race rig. I find myself downshifting to a slower cadence on some climbs. It's noticeable but not intrusive. And less obvious than the "flat tire" effect I was preparing myself for. It is more fun and lively than something like a Roubaix though, it also looks the business. I am 6' and the medium is spot on.
@DanKla91
@DanKla91 4 года назад
I like the Endurace also over the Ultimate. BUT.... the Reason the Utlimate is more attractive is the way more stiffer frame. The Endurace has noticeable more compliance in frame then Ultimate. Also the alloy endurace ist more stiff then the Carbon Endurace. Grand Fondo Magazin compared these to in a test. If the Frame would be same stiff as the Ultimate ones, i would go for the Endurace

From what I hear,the Endurace feels much like a race bike,with some small nods to comfort. With a little taller bar heidth,and the leaf spring carbon seat post. I don't really get why people treat the Endurace like an "old man bike"... in medium size stack and reach are just 1cm taller and 1cm shorter for the endurance compared to the ultimate. So the difference is much more subtle than you would think. I chose the Endurace simply because of the fact that I have very long legs and a short torso. It already gets me in a very racey position (10cm drop) so riding an Ultimate or even Aerod would require me to be much more flexible than I am.

I saw a comparison between Endurace, Ultimate and Aeroroad on RU-vid. Was surprised how little difference it was between the models. Aero most agressive and Endurace the least, but all of them I will define as racing bikes. The Endurance looks way more aggressive then my 7 year old Cannondale Synapse. Even the new 2018 Synapse is more aggressive then the older Synapse models. Currently I'm going back and forth between 2018 Synapse or and Endurace. Going for discs because I live in the fjords of Norway and it rains a lot. Synapse I can buy at my local dealer and it have fender mounts. Endurace looks like a cooler bike. Almost same price. they both are excellent bikes for me. Personally, I think it comes down to the brakes. $400 is pretty good value for disc brakes, but I live in a mostly flat area, and although it can get hilly there are no technical descents. and don't see myself riding in rough weather very often. If they offered the enduro in rim I might reconsider but the rim ulti vs the enduro is about 1.5 lb difference to boot.

Taylor Calibo You’d be just fine taking this to a crit or road race and you’d likely beat people on “pure” race bikes (I’ve raced this at 2 series practices). And on the other end of the spectrum I’ve seen the endurace at 2 gravel races now. Everyone, and I mean everyone, could make far greater gains in their motor than in the type of bike they ride - I’d say the bike is responsible for a much smaller fraction of a riders performance than everyone believes. I’ve been beaten in races and rides by fat bikes while on my inflite, I was destroyed by guys on mountain bikes while on my endurance in group rides, and I’m also faster than a whole lot of people that have nicer bikes. I whole heartedly believe in buying the bike that excites you and gets you out more. Then make it a point to kick someone’s ass that said the endurace is any less of a bike than

For 90% of us, it probably really doesn’t matter. If you’re living the road racing life and you eat, breathe, sleep road biking, you probably want the ultimate (or care enough about the differences to notice marginal gains). Imo get which one makes you more excited or buy the cheaper one and put the savings into a power meter or training program if you care about speed.

I have a Spectral also in stealth black. Yes stealth is a bland color BUT it has the upside of making the colors of any components really pop. I have blue pedals and tubeless valves on it and they really stand out, I'm considering putting in some orange components too like brake levers, rotors, and grips since blue and orange compliment each other well. Thanks for the review. I'm also considering buying one since my gravel bike is really more of my adventure bike and I want something I can climb better with. Only I'm considering the CF SL 7.0 with the 105 groupset and I'm comparing it against the Orbea Orca M30. I'll probably go with the canyon to save a little bit of money and because my Spectral gets so many compliments and looks of adoration so I suspect the Endurace will too

Excellent review! Seriously so many vague videos about this particular bike. I’m stuck between the 8.0 and the 7.0. It’s a big price difference, but is it worth it you think? I love the idea of the split seat post especially since I suffer from saddle soreness at times, but the upgrade from 105 to Ultregra is a little less motivating of a reason for the price difference since I’ve had good luck with 105s. I guess the wheels are different too, DT Swiss vs the 7.0’s Maverics.

169 Design I ended up upgrading my wheels to Hunt aero 50s. I’d question that XL fit. I’m 6’2” and ride a large - I like how mine fits and couldn’t imagine going much bigger. Regarding the group set, it’s tough to find other brands that offer the same bang for the buck. Would you notice though? Probably not.

Ben Snyder thanks for the response. I had edited my question about your height because as I scrolled through the comments I saw you had answered it already. I have a 35” inseam and it still said L not XL so I will stick with their fitment. I bet the upgraded wheels made a big difference. And don’t get me wrong it would be nice to have Ultegra over 105, but like you said, would I notice the difference, not likely. The biggest thing for me is that seat post. It just makes me want to go with the 8.0 so bad, but again, I have to justify the almost $900 price difference. We’ll see.

I wonder which one to choose in 2020. I could go for beautiful red Endurace CF 8.0 (7,4 kg) vs boring black Ultimate CF SL 8.0 (7,0kg). Endurance is 300$ cheaper. I think 400 grams for 300$ at this level is huge difference. I think that difference in weight between them is made wholly on frames. What do you think? Moreover, what is a difference in stiffness between both bikes? Is it big?

@bensnyder2057 6 лет назад
If you're not racing or a weight snob, you probably won't notice the difference and $800 is a big savings (you could probably find a whole other bike for that amount from used classifieds). There's about a 1lbs difference in the two Endurace models. The 105 components on 7.0 tend to be made of heavier material than Ultegra, but typically reviews state there's not a big difference in the performance of those two group sets. You also get better tires, the new seat post, and a different saddle with the Endurace 8.0.

Kinda sounds like you've got the 'David' complex, perhaps; that is, David And Goliath, at least with respect to bicycles. If so, me too! Nothing more rewarding than hanging with much more expensive, high-end, purpose built road bikes; those ridden by cyclists that are out on serious 'training' rides, either as teams or riding solo. I love it when I get a bit of stink-eye or an unspoken WTF from ones I not only hang with but will at times either pull, drop or just hang with (and at times, fail) when I'm on an aggressive/hard training day. I'm riding on a MOTIVE Ground Pounder (full rigid) MTB, in case you're wondering. All those bikes ended up having at least one component they was of lesser value, usually the wheels AND worse reviews. Hello Ben thanks for the review. Can I ask you what’s your saddle height and whether you kept all the spacers under the stem? I am trying to figure out the kind of saddle to bar drop you have (I suppose the bars are higher than on a pure racer) and how it feels to get the bars higher with a longer reach rather compared to having the bars lower with a shorter reach (which is what I currently have on my cyclocross bike).
@bensnyder2057
@bensnyder2057 6 лет назад
Terence Blaise I’m 6’2” with ~34 IS. I prefer a more compact and upright position. My saddle height is shy of 90cm (I had a fit done and the system suggested an even lower saddle height) with the seat bumped forward quite a bit. I left the spacers as they were out of the box and I slanted the bars up by a degree or two. I might look like a dork by cyclist standards but I found that I get the most power out of my legs like this. You should try to get a fit if you can.

Ben Snyder cheers, I did check out their tool, I am 6ft with IS 35 and the tool recommends a M size frame, so I am just trying to get a feeling how good/bad that tool is.

dirk siepe keep in mind that Canyon also has a 30 day stem and handlebar exchange policy (in the event you need a longer setup than medium).

Yes, you are right, actually their exchange/return policy says: 'WITHIN A PERIOD OF 30 DAYS YOU CAN RETURN YOUR BIKE UNUSED OR EXCHANGE IT FOR ANOTHER MODEL OF YOUR CHOICE.' So even better...

I'm looking at an Ultimate to replace my race-geometry bike (though the Endurace has made me think twice a few times). I emailed Canyon about their handlebar exchange policy as I'm looking at a bike with their one-piece aero bar. Their response was I could buy a new handlebar from their website and I cannot "exchange" it. I had read on the internet about exchanges too so if you have a link to that effect please post. Thanks! FWIW: I am 5ft 10.5in (179cm) with a 32.5in inseam (82.55cm) and their sizing guide puts me on a M. But if I knock off a half-inch somewhere it drops me to a S. So I realize I'm right in between sizes. Both Ultimate and Endurace.

You mis-pronounce the model name of the bike. it's Endurance, not Edura-Ace

Cameron Parrett checkout the spelling on their website homie. There’s no “n” at the end.

everything is nice except price. for this money you can buy a few years old yamaha r1 . that is sick to pay couple grands for four carbon fibre pipes and wheels. bikes are way too expensive nowadays

Agreed although it is the price of entry - supply and demand. And there are plenty of more affordable models compared to this that will suit many folks just fine. Also - cycling is way cheaper than that silly golf game I used to play.

I usually ride at 54cm medium. Canyon sizing puts me on a small frame. If it is wrong on arrival it means a lot of hassle. Nothing beats trying the bike out in the shop. However I really fancy the Canyon.
