Canyon Endurace vs Giant Defy, it's the endurance bike battle of 2020. Our 2020 bike of the year was hotly contested in the endurance bike category, but eventually Senior Road Editor Warren Rossiter narrowed it down to just two amazing bikes. Which one comes out on top? You'll have to watch to find out.

I purchased the Giant, I now have about 1,000 miles on it, so far, I love it. At first it seemed a little slow handling, sort of lazy feeling, but I did cross over from a much more aggressive race road bike. I was also skeptical about riding a bike with 32 tires, I thought it would feel slow, nothing could be further from the truth. Overall, I am extremely impressed with bike and would recommend it, particularly if your a rider like myself, now in my 50’s and wanting something to do long rides.

Love the review. I bought the Defy Adv Pro 2 2020 as my second only ever road bike purchase. My old 531 road bike has lasted 25 years and well over 150k km of terrible Scottish roads, winters and a few crashes, so some big shoes to fill. I was initially disappointed at a kind of numb ride feeling from it compared to my tight and springy old bike but I put in some big rides in Covid lockdown and fell in love with the thing. Whilst it doesn't set the heather on fire in any category as 'best in the world' (climbing, descending or whatever) it is a very very good bike at just about everything. It rides fast, is comfortable (changed the saddle to a Selle Italia SLR Superflow), and, saddle aside, is a very considered and well designed all-round machine. It also looks great, in my opinion - here's to the next 25 years...

It seems criminal to not mention the eyelets for fenders on the Defy - I'm a huge Canyon fan but the fender compatibility of the Defy is what ultimately made me get the Defy over the Endurance.

Thanks for the detailed review. My old 2014 Giant Advance Defy (aluminum frame version) is getting tired, and the group I ride with is getting younger (I'm 60) so time to upgrade. I bought a "newzed" 2020 Giant Defy and am looking forward to getting it dialed in over the next few days. Looking forward a comfort boost to take some of the "sting" out of my 3+ hour group rides.

I been riding a giant defy advance 3 Tiagra and I love the Giant but wanted to upgrade the group set and after much comparison and watching videos etc I decided for the Canyon endurace cf sl 8.0 hydraulic disc brakes all Ultegra group and I love it. I have to say the endurace even though is an endurance bike is a more agressive position than the giant. I almost got the Giant defy 1 all ultegra but canyon gave me better rims, better tires and better crank for the same money. you can't go wrong with either one. Also look at Trek Domane SL5 (105) and SL6 (ultegra) but about 1,000 $$$ more for same components so no, but beautiful bikes too. Ride lots and have fun..

I own the canyon CF SLX Di2 in the red and black and it’s a fantastic bike. I rode a demo bike at the worlds in Harrogate last year and was blown away by the speed and comfort and decided there and then that this was the bike for me. Very light for an endurance as well just over 7kg.
@Tony-tu7gq

Steve King as long as it’s the same frame/cockpit with the excellent seat post as you go down the range I wouldn’t expect much if any ride difference, it’s just slightly better components you’re paying for. As for the brake rub the only time I notice it is when going through a puddle, I’ve been out in the rain for a few hours with no problems but it’s just the odd time they get submerged like through a stream for example, the only other time when it was squeaking I realised that I didn’t have the skewers quite tight enough. I tend to clean them now and then with Muc Off - disc cleaner which is supposed to help.

Riding a 2015 Defy Advanced, first of their all disc Defy and the early version with quick release still. Keep going to upgrade it but I still love it... Commuting or long weekend rides, always makes me smile. 28mm tubeless and 4 piston Deore MTB brake calipers make it a real hooligan machine on long sketchy descents :)

Defy was my first bike and still I still use it for commuting but bought the Canyon reviewed here and it is much better value with better branded components and is lighter and racier. Any sacrifice in comfort or frame quality is unnoticeable to most normal people. I wanted more for my €4K and got that with the Canyon Endurace 8.0 Di2 Aero. God that name is exhausting though.

I have the CF SLX Endurace with the mechanical groupset. One of the main reasons I chose the bike is that it comes in XXL. Giant and other brands don't offer my size so my choices are limited. That said, the Bike Radar assessment is spot on which for me is ideal. Upright angles and quicker handling are my preference. Compared to my 2011 Specialized Roubaix, the Endurace puts me more on top of the bottom bracket with more weight on the front wheel and more predictable, faster handling. Can't say I liked the Reynolds wheels though. The rims seemed OK, but one ride in a heavy rain and the rear hub/cassette body was full of water and squealing all the way home.

I've just bought a 2018 Endurace CF with mechanical 105 and rim brakes. Like you, the XXL sizing is the reason. I'm 6ft 8" and it feels like a perfect fit for me. My first ride on it was today and it performed beautifully. Very fast and comfortable.

I have been riding the Defy Advanced 1 2019 for a year, Identical except for the tyres. Exceptional bike. Giant has done an awesome job in the way that your don't at all feel the flex of the post or bars, you only feel the increase in comfort, particularly on 3 hours + rides. Could be a tad lighter. Will not be shopping for a bike any time soon :-).

I got a Canyon Endurace. Haven't received it yet, but looking forward to it. I want a bike now and it's hard/impossible to test at my LBS at the moment. I went with Canyon because mainly for the convenience, value and aesthetics. I wanted a lightweight, somewhat racey endurance bike with electronic shifting and disc brakes. I got the Flash Blue model, which looks fantastic (I'm not a fan of the current stealth color trend). I was also considering Canyon's gravel bike, the Grail, but not only are they not in stock, an 8.0 Di2 Flash Blue model isn't available for sale either (U.S. market, as of 5/8/20). I think the Endurace can handle light gravel, so I'm not too disappointed. I'm also not completely sold on the Grail's hover bar; I find Future Shock 2.0 on the Specialized Diverge as a more effective solution to the same problem.

Aside from that i LOVE love love the smarts in the frame build. Dumped the standard Mavic Elite wheels for some American Classic ARGENTS, way better wheel and hubs but showing their age as the rim ID is 19 BUT being alloy the rim thickness each side is thinner than equivalent carbons so a 25C side wall is slightly outboard of the rim. Have some DT Swiss ERC 1400 Spline to fit so am hoping to notice an improvement, hoping...... The AC Argents were very underrated imo. and spin for ever. My H31 cockpit was too short for me sadly so needed regular bar and stem combo because rrp on Canyons all in ones are ridiculous.

The Merida is a 24 hours drive machine, but I think it's not just the geometry but also the aluminium frame which flexes more.

Yeah, it looks like a turd. Though I think I am getting used to it. But at least you can change something as simple as a stem without having to change the whole bars too, inc disconnecting, re-routing your brake hoses, and then re-bleeding the whole system. It's just because marketing says "we must have concealed cables, because people want to be more aero" The engineers reply and say it will make f*** all difference to 99.99999% of people that ride it, and if the fat gits want to be more aero they should bend their elbows by another degree, and to stop undoing all their nice weight savings with pies while they're at it.. Marketing comes back from focus groups to report that that won't go down well, and does anyone know how to stop a nose from bleeding? Also, that people do like the integrated bar & stems that more and more other bikes are getting. Then the mechanics spit out their tea and tell them to f*** off, they're not servicing that! It's just too much of a faff. But they would grudgingly accept that hideous stem contraption from the Propel. The engineers like this idea, because it's aero, and they don't have to reinvent the wheel. But marketing comes back saying everyone hated that one because it made their eyes bleed, it was just that ugly. Corporate calls up to ask why the new bike isn't finished yet, and they have 2 weeks or heads will roll. So then engineers have this contradicting brief and come up 2 designs, one NASA would be proud of, looks beautiful but is made of unobtainium and costs £500 each to make and the 2nd design that uses 50p of plastic to cover the cable with, which was only ever meant to be for the wind tunnel model but they thought they would throw it in 5 mins before the deadline, because they were so focused on the NASA one, they forgot to make an alternate design. As soon as corporate sees the cost slide of the presentation they unanimously decide on the chincy plastic cover. At this point engineering just wants to be done with the whole thing and not redesign it to look slightly better at the risk that it gets rejected again because now there are too many fingers in the pie, so they just send the plans over to the factory and go back to playing with their nice fancy stem.

I own an Endurace (CF SLX 8.0 DI2) and it's a good bike... But before you buy I would strongly suggest you research Canyons customer service (at least in the USA) BEFORE you buy. I wish I had, because if I did I would be commenting about my Defy here (it was my second choice). My experience with Canyons customer service which I've been told is a different company than Canyon of Germany is that they will avoid providing service at all cost. My experience is they expect you to pay, then you are on your own and don't bug them about any issues, they don't want to hear it.

Andy, August 2019 lots of videos touting the greatness of the Caynon Endurace SLX 8 DI2 , read several reviews and ordered and paid. Within a week I started hearing about customer service issues, read TrustPilot posts, some good but lots of others were unhappy. Customer waiting months for clear and simple issues to be resolved, you could feel their pain. Canyon billed my credit card for more than their online quote/ invoice, shipping was added in, was suppose to be free, on request charge was removed. Received the bike assembled it...short ride, loved it, fast, great breaking, smooth shifting... more like a Giant TCR not an endurance bike in my opinion. Boxed it up and shipped it back. What weighed on me was customer service reviews (they are painful), bought a Defy carbon, ultegra NOT DI2 knowing Giant has very good customer support. All I could think of was a four day Boston to Montreal ride and having issues that would take months to address, My Defy is not as sporty but it is dependable, comfortable and I have peace of mind. If Canyon can resolve their service issues I'll be back in a few years. GL to all.

Canyon using its own tech is the problem that I have. If I need parts, I have to order them and wait. Thats the only reason I haven’t pulled the trigger. Thinking about taking a trip to there Northern California canyon.Home. I really prefer hands on, but I love what you get for your money. Has anyone notice that most bikes these days have cheap drivetrains and parts for the prices we spend.

This is fine and good for Giant, if you are tall and do not live in Taiwan. Oddly, Giant does not manufacture or otherwise make available tall bikes for their local market. You can get one, but it’s a painfully unnecessary hassle of time, money, and effort. I live in Taiwan, and I am tall, so despite everything, Canyon wins. Well, the Merida Scultura 4000 is equitable, and it comes in large size available in Taiwan. Decisions....

I’ve still got the equivalent bike from 2015... defy pro advanced 1 in red which is the spec point equivalent to the current pro advanced 2 (mechanical ultegra) I have to say the bike is just as good now as it was then. I’d definitely be going for the defy advanced pro 2 if I was upgrading now. My only gripe with the 2015 bike is the 28mm front tyre clearance is very tight, clearly the newer models have massively increased clearance. A friend has last years endurance, very nice bike but the giant edges it for me. I do agree with other comments on here though, the canyon one piece cockpit looks so slick compared to the giant stem setup. Maybe the next thing for giant to look at in 2021? Good review bikeradar 👍🏻

I tried to buy an Endurace, but Canyon could not find my address, then charged me in full, still could not find my address, then ran out of stock…very frustrating folks to deal with, though nice enough. Finally got my money back and just this week lucked into a Defy Advanced 2 at a shop 15 miles away👍👍 Two rides in two days and I am super happy.

@markflis7806
@markflis7806 4 года назад
I bought a Canyon Ultimate and just built it up a few days ago. I was always on a 56cm frame that most companies would consider a large. The Canyon website fit calculator using inseam and height said I was a small canyon frame. Instead I used their stack and reach measurements in the geometry chart and found that the stack and reach of the medium was very close to the large 56 of my prior bike (scott addict). The canyon medium was about 2-3mm smaller in both stack and reach. Another point to know is the cockpit dimensions in the geometry chart (i.e. 100 - 410 for a medium frame) means 100mm from fork tube center to the bottom edge of the flats. You need to add 10mm to that stated bar length to campare to a nkrmal stem, so the Canyon 100 really measures 110mm. Adding this bar length to the reach figure should give you a close comparison to an existing preferred set up. I went from my scott 56 large with a 100mm stem to the canyon ultimate medium with their 110mm stem. That got me a really similar fit. Basically seems like Canyon sizes small, medium, large etc. run bigger than other companies small, medium, large. I was always stuck in between most companies medium and larges, and the Canyon medium was perfectly in between for me. Hope this helps with a search in the smaller frame sizes as well.

Nick, no regrets. A long time since I’ve used a Shimano group set and I cant believe how light the gear changes are. Can’t imagine needing anything better than 105. I’ve only done about 120 miles on the bike so far but they’ve been the most comfortable I’ve ever had on a non-suspended bike. It climbs, handles and still only weighs 18lbs (medium frame without pedals). I’m a weekend warrior, and for my purposes it’ll do everything I’m going to need it for. Only other spec difference I can see is an alloy D-Fuse bar rather than a carbon one
