Learn more about the TI Precision Labs - Op Amp Evaluation Module used in the hands-on lab modules

This is the fifth of seven videos in the TI Precision Labs - Op Amps
curriculum that addresses operational amplifier stability. In the previous
training we discussed the concepts involved in basic stability theory, as
well as how to test and simulate for stability issues in SPICE and on the
bench. This video will discuss why capacitive loads cause stability issues
and will present the first capacitive load compensation technique using an
isolation resistor.

4:33 why need AOL_loaded=20dB to set fzero? And why that will make PM >=60 degree?

If the slope through the cross over frequency is higher than 20dB, i.e. 40dB it means that an extra pole is present which degrades the phase margin. Q: Suppose that you added a zero for pole-zero cancellation such that you have a 20dB slope at the cross-over frequency (0 dB gain), fc, where would that zero have had to be in order to achieve 20dB slope at fc? A: One decade earlier from fc. With a slope of 20dB/decade that would be at a gain value 20dB back from the cross-over frequency.

@@gert_kruger Thanks. Just saw your post. So with the zero set at AOL_LOADED=20dB, we will have 20dB slope at fc. That is understood. But how that makes PM>=60? Seems to me this will still depend on the higher order pole or poles beyond the fc. For example, let's say there is another pole at exactly fc, then the PM will be 45. To have PM=60, the higher oder pole will have to be 1.732xfc.
