Dr. Andrew Esch, Senior Education Advisor at the Center to Advance Palliative Care, discusses the CAPC curriculum 'Chronic Pain Strategies for Patients with Serious Illness', that which was developed to address a gap in medical education for all clinicians interfacing with patients with a serious illness.
This curriculum provides a comprehensive approach to chronic pain management, risk mitigation, assessing opioid misuse, and assisting with access to treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) for patients living with serious illness. It addresses the connection between chronic pain, OUD and substance use disorder, and serious illness, and covers factors that impact decision-making for medically complex patients.
