Wow, he is a madman. Love the way he chokes up on his bow using the half nearest the frog, especially on the reel. Pure and unadulterated class.

the old guys do it the justice the tunes deserve, but ya have to give this generation credit too for how creative they are. it's just the old guys played it the way the were played

Brilliant! John was a very special player - and I think he made like over 35,000 tunes as well! I wonder what happened to his manuscript books?

Celtic Colours did a concert in Mabou last year (2017) called John MacDougalls Tunebook... each artist went into the manuscript books to choose tunes and introduce them. Started with his nephew Ian MacDougall, a great fiddler in his own right. I think Ian is going to publish some of them. It was a great concert; I was in the front row.

John's cousin Ian has his tunebooks now and is preparing to publish them, but that may be a while yet before it happens. He's got a Herculean task ahead of him sorting through 38,000 tunes.

The slow air, of which we just get the last couple of phrases at the beginning of the clip, is Neil Gow's Lament for his Second Wife.

THAT is a strathspey. Played at the strathspey speed.

@dp0ulette fiddles are part of the culture. if you dont like it, move elsewhere.

but thats also false because they put there own style into it, each fiddler was way different, mostly because of the ear playing, but it was still played the way it sounded for years, the timing the heart
