On December 12-14, 2010, while cruising through Patagonia on Holland America's Veendam, we found ourselves right smack in the middle of one of those notorious Cape Horn storms. Swells reached 98ft, temperatures outside fell to 19º F, and constant winds exceeded 70 knots, or category 1 hurricane force winds. Our Captain, Rik Krombeen, revealed to us this had been the worst storm he had ever sailed through in his 27 year career. He also told us that while we were in the storm, none of the forecasters and meteorologist they use to track weather systems and plot routes placed us in the storm. As you can see, the forecasters and meteorologists were wrong. In the end, the cruise ship lost an anchor and part of the aft deck, several panels fell inside and outside the ship, and a few people were injured. Nonetheless, we were all happy to have survived it.

I was on the same schip and voyage. I assure you that the info given is absolutely correct. The Veemdam is NOT a "flimsy" ship. The are built as a transatlantic ship and they are ice-class, used also in Alaska. The storm should have 300 km away but due to sudden changes we went in between Falkands and Ushuaia. It was 12 beaufort (= "hurricane" force - max on the scale). It was very impressive. Congratulations to Capt Krombeen, who stayed on bridge all time and informed himself passengers

Great footage of the powerful sea, so awesome. Now just imagine how they did it 400 years ago, with pirates, and krakens roaming the oceans.

The waves were approx. 100 Feet High so to all you Doubters don't make comments about these waves being 30 to 40 feet high! I was on this Holland America MS VEENDAM Ship on this date and the Hurricane lasted for 3 days! We should not have left Faulkland Islands when we did but cruising through this hurricane was the most exciting experience of my life and I wouldn't swap it for any holiday trip quite frankly! It was FREEZING COLD too and NOT 19 C so we sang The Titanic theme song for 3 days!

I agree. My wife and I were on it . Later the captain wrote on a T Shirt I still have, "30metre waves (that's 90ft!), 90 kt winds (one and a half hurricane strength)". The ship suffered considerable damage, even buckled the upper bow, not to mention the damage in the restaurants, shops, casino and staterooms! I saw people huddled together praying! I can not understand why we left the Falkland island that day, knowing what was in front. Next time I go by plane! Gerry Dick. Australia

Since at storm's peak we were discouraged from leaving our cabins I wasn't able to film the bigger waves. As I was told by several individuals, the worst waves broke on deck 11 or 12, but I didn't see that. This video was filmed from deck 13. The stats on the wave heights, temperatures, etc, comes from the official Holland-America trip log we got at the end of the cruise. I presume the information is accurate, since there is no logical reason why Holland America would want to exaggerate them.

Thanks for sharing. I was on the next trip which had calm seas a great summer weather. The captain said your sailing it was the worst he had seen in 26 years at sea, the worst storm a Holland America ship has uncounted. The forecasting had put the storm 400 hundred miles away. So few weather stations make forecasting a hit and miss affair. We had pack ice to deal with on out trip to the Antarctic Peninsula. I remember a cyclone in the S Pacific when the prop was partially out of the water

Just awe inspiring experience. I am glad this video was managed because so many were Sea-sick. I understand the captain eventually ordered everyone to their cabins. I would have snuck out to see the full glory of that storm. I don't get very sea-sick. The ship incurred some structural damage. A 98 ft wave (always measured from sea-level so the trough adds more) has huge force per meter in which some ships how are not designed to withstand.

Me and my wife were on the same ship. The head of ship moved up and down almost 2-3 stories high. We spent on day without advancing at all in the middle of storm and skipped one day of the schedule.

@mrsonemon22 ours was Buenos Aires to Valparaiso. It didn't stop in Rio. My brother, mom, and I mom took my 86 year-old grandmother on her last great adventure, as she calls it. And, boy, was it ever. Because of the storm we had to forgo a stop, Puerto Mont, and my brother and I are very active travelers, so being cooped-up in a cruise for several days wasn't our cup of tea, but the experience was unforgettable and unique, and made my grandmother happy which was more than enough to compensate.

Holland America is one of the very few cruise lines that actually builds ocean liners as opposed to cruise ships, I have been on a Princess cruise ship in Cat 7 and this ship handled worse sea much better!
@LilJonBigNuts
@LilJonBigNuts 7 лет назад
Thus is a false statement as Holland AND Princess are both owned by Carnival LLC, this ship is very small and only holds around 1000 passengers. As both Princess & Holland Ships are built very similar.

Patagonia is a very large region, with dramatic differences in climate between each area within the region. Cape Horn is the southernmost tip of South America and Patagonia. It is part of Tierra del Fuego, an area known for its glaciers and snowfall throughout the year. The average summer temperature is in the 40sF. The information on temperature, swell height, winds speeds, etc., comes directly from the ship's log.

Tierra del Fuego is a Chilean Province, and Cabo de Hornos is a Chilean commune, and both territories are within the Magallanes Region, Chile. Cape Horn does not belong to Tierra del Fuego
@blurredsilence
@blurredsilence Год назад
@@Andy-xm1fg this might be a shock to you, but when people around the planet talk about Tierra del Fuego, they are not talking about the Chilean province with that name. For anyone on Earth, (except maybe some Chileans) Tierra del Fuego is the name of the archipelago region at the southernmost tip of South America. This region is divided politically into three provinces, two Chilean and one Argentinian. Yes, there is a Chilean province called the Tierra del Fuego Province, and, yes, Cape Horn is not part of that political region, but Cape Horn is part of the other Chilean province within the Tierra del Fuego Region: the Antártica Chilena Province. While part of this province is in Antártica, the other part of it, the one that includes Cape Horn, is within the Tierra del Fuego archipelago. To round things out, the third province within the Tierra del Fuego region is another province called Tierra del Fuego, but that one belongs to Argentina.

I was on the Dutch sailing ship "Europa" at this time and conditions were very bad, having to run off. Also, the cruise ship"Clellia II" got into distress in the Drake at the same time.

@blurredsilence I cruised MS Veendam from Valparaíso to Buenos Aires, before your trip. We also had some bad weather near Falkland Islands. So we couldn't stop there. From Falkland Islands to Montevideo, in the first night, we got a very bad dinner, because of the storm. A lot of glasses falling down at Rotterdam restaurant. I really got scared!

it is not 19F in Patagonia in December...that is summer time there. Maybe 19C. Granted this is no place for a flimsy cruise ship, it is common weather in these parts.

We were on this cruise. Never have i been so frightened in my life. Sat in the lounge on the 8th deck, I believe, and watched waves hit the windows. Went to the dining room, and when we looked out the back window, all we could see was a wall of water. Tables and chairs slid across the floor. Everyone was sent to their rooms, and sandwiches were brought to our rooms. The ship pitched and rolled all night. I could actually feel my body lift up off the bed. Several broken arms from falling, and crushed fingers from slamming doors. People were trying to call their families to say goodbye. When we got to Ushuaia, and were able to get off the ship, we saw some smashed cargo doors, and officials were trying to discourage our photos. We also saw the Clelia II docked there. It had to be rescued due to engine failure. We had watched it on the news before we hit the really bad weather.

+ForedeckShuffle We were on the ship. This video was probably taken about midday on the 13th. The waves would come in sets. Like 4 big ones in the 50-60 ft range. By 6 pm they much bigger, probably 70-80 ft. I know because our cabin was on the 5th deck. At times the crest of the waves were above our port window. On the 8th deck where the library was the waves appeared to be a eye level. When were were told the official reading everyone knew no one would believe us. Everyone wanted written proof. So Holland America agreed to print a captain'slog which contained the statistics. They issued one to each cabin. That is where the 98 ft comes from. Our captain who had done 23 years in the North Atlantic and 4 years at Cape Horn said he had never experienced anything like it. A true storm of the century. This was also confirmed by the locals in Ushuaia. So I know the video does not look like it but it really did get that big.

I was on this cruise and the rogue 98 footer hit about 3:00 at night ran out about 1000 ft of anchor line they had to get close to shore to bring up! Yes there really was one big rogue wave!
@aussiedave1248
@aussiedave1248 3 года назад
Average 50 foot some 75 foot at a generous guess and the occasional 80 footer. I have seen 85 / 90 foot close up regularly and these are not as big but still ugly and not anything you would tackle in any less a ship as this ship, she ploughed thru without a whimper. Also the distance between the waves makes a big difference to how the ship rides and handles, how long the vessel will also have a affect on how it will handle the conditions.
@blurredsilence
@blurredsilence 3 года назад
Unfortunately I was unable to record the biggest waves because during the worst of the storm we were asked to not leave our cabins. I know the waves reached 100 ft because it was registered in the Captain's Log we were given upon deboarding. The captain told us it was the worst storm he had ever confronted at sea. The ship was battered. We lost one anchor and for two days couldn't bring in the other one, and parts of the outside deck were blocked off because the damage made the deck unsafe to walk on. The ship made it to shore thanks to the crew and the captain who used every tool, like flooding half of the hull and chaining the ship's angle, to keep the ship from rolling.

@mstng100mph The ship is great and so is the crew, so don't worry. In fact, May is a great month to go cruising through the mid-Atlantic. It is known for being the most serene. I should know, I'm from San Juan, bottom tip of the triangle.

I will bring you down a bit. Category 1 Hurricane has winds between 74-85 mph or 64-82 knots. I lived in Fl. 30 years and I know my winds :-) BTW I have see worst cruise ship in storm videos. But I am sure it has to be frightening when you are on a ship the first time, for you and the flying dutschman.

Connie, thanks for your comment. I live in the Caribbean and grew up on boats skipping from island to island and have lived though innumerable amounts of storms including 3 cat 4+ hurricanes, so this event did not frighten me. I figured the crew and captain knew what they were doing. During the worst part of the storm, we were asked to stay in our cabins so I was unable to take images from the worst of it. Nonetheless, when we were deboarding we were given a copy of the Captain's Log which recorded the wave measurements and winds speeds.
