On May 18, 2024, I joined two other boats for an Atlantic Ocean cruise up the coast of New Jersey from Cape May to Atlantic City. We'd been waiting 5 days for a weather window and the marina we were in, which caters mostly to fishing and tour boats, was ready for us to move on. With what seemed like a good weather window, we headed out before dawn on that Saturday morning with seas forecasted to have waves and swells of 3 feet with a 6-8 second period between them.
I followed New Bearings out and Crimson Tug got in behind me. For a while, I followed at typical trawler speed -- around 7 knots. But the waves and swell, which came from a variety of directions, made the cruise uncomfortable for me and my dogs. I'm not sure if I picked up speed before or after Rosie puked for the first time, but I quickly left my companions behind, cruising at about 12-14 knots to minimize my misery.
The puke index for this cruise broke the previous record with Rosie puking 2 times and Lily puking 4 times. Cleaning up dog puke on my seat didn't help my condition; I wore Sea Bands and took hourly doses of Pepto Bismol to keep from soiling the gunwales out my window.
Although I did record some "talking head" camera video for this trip, I did not record much and, frankly, that's probably a good thing. But I did have a camera up in the front window running the whole time. It captured 3 hours of footage showing pretty much what I saw out in front of us. I set it to some ambient music rather than the drone of the engine and the sound of my voice calming my pups.
This is the kind of thing you might put on if you want to go to sleep or have on in the background on a TV when entertaining boating friends. It's not exciting, but it is real life.
If you're doing the Great Loop, I hope you get a better weather window than we did on your NJ coast cruise(s). I took the inside route to Point Pleasant Beach the following day -- which is a whole other challenge -- and will be venturing out into the Atlantic again this morning for the final push to New York Harbor.
