Cape Pembroke Lighthouse, Falkland Islands 1997

Trinity House Lighthouse Service in Britain used to look after several lights abroad, one of which was Cape Pembroke in the Falkland Islands. This lighthouse is now under the control of the Falkland Island Government, but because it used to have Keepers from here (a long time ago) I managed to get to go and video it. The lighthouse was manned, by local Keepers up until the war in 1982, when it was discontinued. When I got to see it, it was an empty shell with a badly damaged lens. So this is my visit with lots of Island and the wildlife thrown in. This visit was only made possible thanks to the kindness of the Governor & the Falkland Island Government.

Brings back many memories from my 2 tours to the Falklands during my time in the Navy. It is a place like no other, the baroness, the history and the unique atmosphere you feel at any sites linked to the war. Contrasted by the friendliness of the locals. Another great video. Thank You.

Hi William, Yes the Falklands was all of those things you mentioned, I really enjoyed my visit and as you said, the people there make you very welcome. It was quite emotional to me too, when I visited Tumbledown for instance, thinking of all those that never got to go home. Cheers for your input, take care and stay safe.

Another unique documentary from the Lighthouse world! (Your commitment re. making this trek to these island, is testament to the old adage ''Never take 'No' for an answer'' - if you're really stoked on something, that's always been my credo...) (And, btw: seeing the smoke rising from the chimneys, _immediately_ brought back memories from my childhood! - I'll never forget walking past our neighbors house early in the morning, in cold, crisp, clear coastal air, and inhaling the truly _unique_ aroma coming from the neighbors chimney, the were burning peat! [Our 'olfactory sense', is something that enables us with one of our absolute strongest 'memories', funny how the genes work . . . .) Thanks again Peter, for the opportunity to once again take an 'armchair travel' with you! - Much obliged . . . . ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thanks again for this fascinating series of videos. They really are a great piece of history, and deserve a wider viewing audience. All the best.
@PeterHalil
@PeterHalil 5 лет назад
Yes I was a jammy sod, and it's a long winded story but will try to answer. I started by writing to the MOD asking if I could go on an empty seat to film this Light and interview the keepers, they said "No Way" they couldn't justify the cost. I wrote back and said there would be no cost if the seat was empty and I would be willing to work my passage when I got there. I got a really snooty terse response that basically asked me what part of no didn't I understand!....So...I wrote to the Governor of the Falklands and dropping Prince Phillips name (as I had interviewed him at Buckingham Palace) and told him what i was doing and he readily agreed and got it all organised. Not only did I get the trip but the brilliant falklands Government footed my B & B bill as well, and I was looked after there by the Jane Cameron mentioned in the credits.Sorry this is long winded but the best bit was the guy that wrote to me twice from the MOD saying what part of No didn't I understand was then "Tasked" to make this visit happen!

I am in absolute agreement with Nans Niemand's statement and can not add to it except that Light Keeper Peter Halil also does an excellent job panning his shots giving the view time to absorb and possibly reflect on the material as perhaps Peter Halil wants to portray. Additionally, and probably most important, is the necessity for this subject to be documented as much as possible and in the unedited manner so to enhance the effect and understanding of the viewer/scholar. I say this by the wisdom learned having the special honor as a child to listen to so many WWI stories by Valor-Decorated US veterans as I grew up back in the 1960's. Thank you Light Keeper Halil. Buy a boat and live in quiet and clean solitude with some hobbies and island interest groups or something to join and be part of the community at large. Beautiful yet desolate, extreme weather and tranquillity all in the same place.

@PeterHalil 5 лет назад
Yes it is a special place and I encountered nothing but friendliness from the Islanders.To give you one little instance, in the movie there is a sequence of someones greenhouse with their tomatoes (@ 4:04) Well a few days later I was in the Museum filming and a chap came up to me to tell me that the greenhouse I had filmed was his and he had meant to give me some of his tomatoes, he later dropped a big bagful off at my digs and we shared them with the other guests at the table for the next few days. I know it was just a little gesture to some people but it told me a lot about the "Friendly Isles". Take care.

Hi, Merry Christmas. I don't know a great deal about cape Pembroke light but have a few bits gathered. There is an old book out there if you can find it in the 2nd hand book store or the library. It is Ceaseless Vigil by WJ Lewis who was a serving Keeper that did time on there. He was stationed there from 1937 till 1946. He states that years ago Trinity sent all the Keepers out from England but then it was just the PK sent and they had local keepers. Then it was all local Keepers and the Island looked after it all. That books ISBN 0 245 50352 8, hope that helps.
