These things are absolute beasts! You can either get them as DIY build it yourself kits, or as fully assembled preamps. Fantastic for the money. I picked mine up for $270 on reverb.com the used market is an amazing value for these things!

I also have an apogee, and love the preamps in them, I just really want some warmer analog mids and lows. I think this is the one, especially because you can’t beat the price!

Interesting you are using the 460. I’ve been considering the mic parts mods for that. The Elam circuit seems really cool.

Great comparison of the stock pre vs. the CAPI. I noticed it looks different than most. Is that an older version?

Matthew Montgomery I cant truly say. I do know that these face plates are still available if you build your own. But I bought mine used pre made. Great pre though. Red dot op amps are 👍👌

I hear the mid-forward flavor especially with acoustic, kinda scratchy which would make it poke out in the mix. Vocals and bass were the winners. More body which makes the Apogee kinda thin sounding. Thanks!

Lol yeah, the only one on my desk anyway. When I was recording this it was my first 500 series pre, but I had a bunch of other pres in a side cart rack off to the side.

Sorry if i missed it but were you micing a bass and guitar amp or? What was the chain?

Sorry for not including the details! The bass was a sterling ray34 direct using a countryman DI, the guitar was a Fender Telecaster american standard into a mesa boogie 5:50 express head, into an open back 1x12 cab with a Vintage 30 mic'd up with an SM57 into the CAPI pre into the line in on the Apogee ensemble.

So you are saying driven this preamp sounds better than a neve 1073 and api312/512? How do you compare them driven?

Driving a neve was never my favorite, it always comes out too "sizzly" for my tastes, I have always enjoyed either the UA610 or this if I want to drive my pres. I can't speak for the actual API312 since I haven't had the chance to drive it up, but I'm sure it sounds good

It’s the transformers, imho. “The high quality components” that matter aren’t real in the capacitors. It’s those churchy transformers.

They've gone up in price since filming this... I originally got it used for $290 on reverb but it's tough to find now. Keep an eye on eBay, craigslist and reverb, they pop up every now and then.
