I just recently played Ace Combat 6 for the first time, I 100% agree with you that 15 years after its release its still really fun game to play. Sure story/dialogue is cheesy as heck but that can be easily ignored and I didnt expect much from that anyway. Most important is that its fun to play, the game doesnt look that bad for its age and that the those battles really make it feels like there is large scale war going on.

Yellow Jacket (the helecopter unit) is also a part of this mission, but you need to take out the unmarked AA defences to the east to have them called in, then they support Warlock ( ithink) as they go to take over the radio station and provide air cover.

My favorite part was always "Our enemies at sea have been destroyed. Marigold! Start moving into the bay!" Gave you that feeling of, Oh hell yes boys, we're doing this today!
