Thanks for this. It is a very helpful video. Query. I understand not capitalizing "fairy". What if they have a specific name. Such as Cocoon Fairies or Woodland Elves? What is your opinion on this? Should the proper creature race names be capitalized or lower case?
@NataliaLeigh

This is a great question! For made-up terms like "Woodland Elf" or "Cocoon Fairy," I'd treat them similar to a domestic animal or horticulture category. My preference would be lowercase, but as long as you use it consistently throughout, you could go with either. It can also be helpful to consider what the characters in your world find common. Is a woodland elf common to your world in the same way a white-tailed deer or monarch butterfly is in ours, for example? If so, capitalization isn't necessary. 😊 I'd opt for down style!

@@NataliaLeigh Thank you so much for your input. There are different races. Example: There are Butterfly Fairies, Cocoon Fairies, Calico Fairies, each with their own characteristics and locations. The same goes for Elves. There are Woodland Elves, Swamp Elves, Ground Elves. Woodland Elves and Swamp Elves, though "cousins", are quite different in look and mannerism. Their homes are different, etc. I will probably go with your suggestion about all the others, though. I can definitely see how a reader could get Capitalization Fatigue. PS Your video that had "m dash" was very helpful. I never knew it before. Second, your video on How to Format a Book was really very helpful. Thanks. Your videos are great, practical and easy to understand.

I usually only cap if it’s a proper noun, the only exception has been for religion words for a deity if it’s in the place of their name

What about brand names for products that are so unique that they are also used as the term itself? Like let’s say in my world there is a new type of microchip called the Mirror Chip. This is a brand name, but it is also just the only thing that this item is called because it’s new and the first of its kind. Like Kleenex. Should I capitalize every time because the product is a proper noun?
@NataliaLeigh
@NataliaLeigh Год назад
Hi, Zélia! Brand names should be capitalized. So, in your case, you'd want to cap Mirror Chip each time it's used, but you may also choose to come up with a generic term, like "chip," which could then be lowercase.
@5Gburn
@5Gburn 11 месяцев назад
@@NataliaLeighA great way to do this, I think, is in dialogue. Have the character say "chip" as shorthand, and subsequently use Mirror Chip sparingly in the narrative.

Just curious about terms of endearment, such as darling. When used in place of a person’s name should it be capitalized?
@NataliaLeigh
@NataliaLeigh Год назад
Love this question! Chicago's preference is to lowercase terms of endearment. For example: "Welcome home, dear." "Can you hand me the potatoes, honey?" "How was your day, darling?" Hope that's helpful!

So if I invented a people called the "Noiz" as in "the Noiz army" and that is also the word used for singular "a Noiz soldier." Is that meant to be capitalized or not? Lol. I hoped your video might answer this. But I still don't know
@NataliaLeigh
@NataliaLeigh Год назад
In this case, I'd capitalize Noiz, as names of ethnic and national groups, and the adjectives associated with them, are capitalized.

@@NataliaLeigh Appreciate it :) Not about grammar I don't think. But I do have a different topic that's been on my mind. Maybe a video idea for you if you feel your expertise can help. There's plenty of videos and resources out there about how to write a good blurb. But no one has ever told me how I'm supposed to identify whether the blurb I've written is any good. Or when I've revised it enough. My blurb is on draft 250 (no joke) I feel like it ought to be good by now. But I still don't know it in any scientific sense. And like, you can't recruit CP's for this because if you're recruiting a CP there's an underline assumption that your blurb needs critique. (aka they won't tell you it's done. They'll find fault with it just so they can feel like they did their part.) If the blurb isn't working, many agents won't even read the first page. A lot hinges on this. I'm willing to revise another 250 times. But that's just the problem. How do I know when to stop?
