Bad contract. No way he will live up to it totally. But that said, it will keep Ovi happy. And a Happy Ovi means lots and lots of goals and perhaps makes catching Gretzky a little bit easier. And thats good for both of them, the franchise, and us as fans. Imo this contract is all about 896 and making it happen.
@@davidtuttle7556 Backstrom isn't a slow player but his main strengths are his vision and puck handling, and that doesn't get worse with age. I still wouldn't sign a 32-year-old free agent to that contract, but there's something to be said for loyalty too, or there wouldn't be a point in cheering for a team in the first place. Backstrom is part of the Caps identity.
@@jasmeg2844 Again, this contract is about keeping ovi happy an free of distractions while chasing 896. The Caps believe that they will make the money back and more down the road off the back of this pursuit.
Yep, and should have been a NHL All Star way more often than the single time he was selected. Just because he is modest and such a great team player should not hurt him from being recognized.
THE RIGHT DECISION HAS BEEN MADE! Backstrom will still have his hands and even more hockey IQ @ 37 years old you better believe it! Congrats Nick!!!!! You have more incredible memories to make, enjoy your district.
Backy is the kind of player that will continue to put up points with his hands and his IQ well after his skating slows. If a guy like Jumbo can hang as long as he has, Backstrom should easily do better with his better vision, better hockey IQ, and WAY better hands.
One of the smoothest passers in the game. Doesn't usually go for the high-risk flashy pass that draws the media highlight attention, but anyone that watches this team full-time knows that Backy makes a living making the smart pass. And makes it look so routine and easy that the attention immediately goes to the guy that puts it in the net. A pass from an expert at reading/thinking ahead of the play, knowing where Ovi and Co will be, and threading the needle through coverage (sometimes above it with a saucer-pass). A LOT of those goals that look easy or routine are that way because of the skill of a passer that can deliver the puck flat, on the tape, and one-step ahead of defenses that make a living scouting your habits to shut you down. The 10 dislikes can only be from fans of the teams he's victimized. AND, the man took an incredibly team-friendly contract through his prime years to help the Caps build contenders. He deserves every dollar this time for his part in making this organization what it is today. All that talk in the past about Backstrom's numbers being inflated by feeding a superstar like Ov are bullshit. Without Backstrom, Ov is still an elite goal-scorer on his own. But with Backstrom, he may be the only elite goal-scorer with a chance at breaking a record that no one thought could be broken.
They gave him a good contract.Backstrom deserved it. As for the term of the contract.I don't see a problem here either.Swedes tend to play for a long time at a good level. These are professionals. You can remember the brothers Sedin, Nylander, Sundin, Alfredsson. They were all in the full order in 36-37 years old.
Yes them assist tho havin finesse, winning games with ovi clutch finishes, these guys are loyal just to the players and organization of caps, good to hear the caps treated them well also because they deserve it
There was never any doubt in my mind that Backs was gonna stay and resign. Leonsis and McClellan had been talking about getting him resigned since the season began. #RockTheRed
His skill is a bit better right now but Kuzy is younger and it should be that way. Backy is by far way more consistent of a player though and he and Ovi have been the franchise for a very long time. Kuzy might be that but Ovi and Backy will have to retire first and have their numbers raised to the rafters first. I am glad he will retire as a CAP. So glad he gets to stick around for 5 more years, means my SC Champs jersey with his name gets to stay around longer. Side note I hope we can get something for Holtby before he walks for nothing. Anyone think he will go to Philly? They like are players who trend on the down side.

Johnny Utah: Way better. Especially at taking unnecessary hooking penalties and removing white powder from small mirrors.
@@confdenhaag Bud you have some anger management. No idea what you're going through but hopefully you get through it. If you're wife and kids left you... I know why. Someone is jealous
