Join me on the full journey to the top of this rugged, difficult and dangerous but spectacular and captivating class 4 Elk Range 14er on September 1, 2022. While many consider this to be Colorado's hardest fourteener to climb, one thing I can say is that it is definitely one of the hardest, and also probably the hardest mountain climb I have done. The trip up this amazing peak is a long one, taking me initially through the gentler woods and meadows alongside the Capitol Ditch Trail and the Capitol Creek Trail, then to idyllic Capitol Lake, just beneath the precipitous and monolithic granite wall that constitutes the mountain's north face, up a grueling slope, across a sea of talus, and finally to the northeast ridge - the route's culmination and moment of reckoning. The challenges here are numerous and considerable: negotiating connected 13er K2, traversing across the infamous "knife edge," a 100-foot-long double-exposed section of ridge near 13,600', and the steep, route-finding-intensive, often loose rock on the upper reaches of the peak's northeast ridge. Capitol is the northernmost 14er in the state's Elk Range - a range as a whole known for its steep, dangerous, and difficult mountains. In this video I discuss a bit about the naming and climbing history and the route's statistics. As always, provided are maps, route description, and, of course, plenty of charming, as well as awe-inspiring and sublime (and in this case, perhaps scary!) scenery. And last but not least, a word of caution: no one should attempt to climb this mountain without the appropriate conditioning, ability, experience, and knowledge derived from multiple sources in regard to the route. People have perished here, an unfortunate reality that has become more pronounced in recent years. BEWARE!!! That being said, here is the table of contents for this video:
0:00 Different views of the mountain, and its history
1:59 TH directions, and route overview and statistics

25:15 From the Capitol/Daly saddle to K2, ~12,500' to ~13,600'

Your videos are easily the most descriptive and informative on routes that I’ve seen. Everyone tries to turn these into a 10 minute video and I like that yours are more longform

Thanks once again. I don't know how I could possibly do justice to these high mtn. climbs in a time frame that short - maybe more in a pictorial capacity, but not necessarily a thorough informative one.

The trip up and down this mountain was probably the most difficult I've yet done, and the awe-inspiring, gut-wrenching scenes and spectacles match the challenge. Most of the approach hike is on gentle, moderately-ascending terrain, but from the beginning and throughout, the mountain stares at you magnetically and beckons you, as if to say: "Bring it on," or: "Are you sure you want to do this?" In its overall singular, forbidding and proud character, this peak reminds me of Long's. Also, recognition goes out to the winner of this video's mystery peak challenge, Hiking 121, for correctly guessing Mt. Elbert. I'm still waiting for the correct answer on my Quandary Peak video! Just hit longs this summer as my first 14er was looking for my next target for the summer and i think i found it :)
@CentennialTreks
@CentennialTreks 9 месяцев назад
In that case good luck to you. Long's is a long and fairly challenging mtn, and this one is significantly longer and more challenging. This year, snow will already be starting to cover the high peaks until next summer, so it probably won't be until then that you get good conditions for this dangerous peak. I totally understand your draw to it. It had that allure for me as well.

Objectively speaking, this was either the hardest mtn I have ever climbed, or it's in a tie with Maroon Peak for that distinction. It has very high endurance stats in addition to considerable hazards and climbing and route-finding challenges. And yes, the 'knife-edge' is the most famous part of the route, and its signature stretch. Fall off, and you're probably a gonner.

@@CentennialTreks wish I had that tolerance to heights. I have built up my balance on bad ground and climbing skills but very hard to find people to go with who have similar schedules etc. Your videos are really cool I like how they are long format too I feel like I gain experience and bit of confidence just watching them

This is an awesome video! Most videos of Capitol don't really show much of the climbing past the Knife's Edge, but this one really does. I hope to do this peak eventually.
@CentennialTreks
@CentennialTreks 10 месяцев назад
Well I appreciate that, and am glad if it stands out in that regard. I really want to show all of the key stretches of each mtn. In the case of Capitol, the knife edge is the most well-known stretch, and not without good reason. However, in my opinion the climb up the rest of the mtn actually involves greater difficulty in places, and so it is important that it be shown at length also.

Definitely among the memorable of the memorable for me, for sure. This mtn seems to personify the challenging, as far as CO 14ers go. Many people think about it long before they undertake it. On the music, I originally decided a couple years ago that I would use the William Tell overture for this mtn's video (if & when I ever got there) because those early sudden, dramatic and loud parts of it would match the 'knife edge' perfectly. The entire ridge from K2 all the way to the top is, indeed, nearly non-stop engaging. Thanks for checking this one out too!!

@@CentennialTreks Yeah I imagine this one is not for the light hearted. Do people ever use ropes on this kind of stuff?
@CentennialTreks
@CentennialTreks Год назад
What I have heard is that sometimes people will tie up to each other with rope and traverse one on either side of the knife edge, in a precautionary weight-counterweight scenario. Maybe they can get that to work, but I personally don't like the idea too much.

Super informative. Great content, man. Some RU-vidrs who post 14er trips have the tendency to use camera lenses that have a high level of distortion, but from your videos for peaks that I’ve done myself, it seems like it gives a fairly accurate sense of the exposure and climbing difficulty. I also appreciate that you record the cruxes fully as opposed to just having a monologue before and after. Keep up the awesome work. Bummed that snow is starting to accumulate this season, but excited for next year.
@CentennialTreks
@CentennialTreks Год назад
Thanks for the feedback on this. I have also seen mtn. climb videos that have high image distortion. Of the 3 different cameras I used for this video, my go pro does have a bit of that, particularly at the edges off the frame, which sometimes makes it look a bit steeper. But overall, the clips seem to present things roughly like I recollect them. My objective is to present each mtn. as authentically, accurately, and thoroughly as possible, in a coherent, watchable way. I figure there is no need for "sensationalizing" things by screwing with the picture or focusing solely on me talking. Thus, I don't show myself too much - (who wants to see that?!🤣). The mtn. itself and the scenery are more than sensational enough on their own. All this can make the videos pretty lengthy, but oh well. I look forward to next year as well.

@CentennialTreks

For sure. As a range, the Elks probably instill the most trepidation in me, especially the Maroon Peaks. I hope to get to those within the next couple years or so, as well as Pyramid.

@CentennialTreks

Certainly it is advisable to break this up into segments by camping near the lake - both for reasons of weather and fatigue. However, here I did the route in one day from the TH. It took me nearly 13 hours round trip. Thanks for viewing - I'm glad you liked this.

@CentennialTreks I'll be 66 when I try it. When I was 18 I hiked avalanche trail up to avalanche lake dropped into Pierre lakes basin south of capital peak, back up to Snowmass lake, over buckskin pass and into Aspen. Took me 5 days. That visit changed my life, hope I can make it back this summer. Running out of time.

I can't wait until I have the experience to feel comfortable doing this one. I moved to Colorado this year and did Bierstadt and Pikes Peak (via the Crag trail) about a month and a half ago. Right now I'm in Montana but I might attempt one more when I get back depending on how forecasts look.
@CentennialTreks
@CentennialTreks Год назад
I have found it has been wise to do a fair number of class 3 climbs before tackling a mtn. like Capitol; As of now, some reports are saying there isn't a lot of snow yet, others that there is - so, before long it will likely be winter conditions for all the high mtn. routes.
