Climbing Colorado’s 2nd highest peak on June 15, 2022 by way of its standard east slopes route. Mt. Massive, with 5 main points well above 14,000 feet, is also arguably the state’s largest 14er. It is just west of the Arkansas Valley, and just north of its 14er neighbor Mt. Elbert, the state’s highest point. The mountain is conspicuously visible from nearby Leadville, the highest incorporated city in the U.S., and indeed dominates the view. This was my 2nd time climbing this mountain. The route takes me through more idyllic mountain forests, across streams and meadows, up the wide stretches of this imposing mountain’s vast (and wind-swept) slopes, and finally over the long high traverse to a summit that on this day held spectacular far-reaching views. In this video, as always I provide maps, route description, and details of the route from trailhead to summit on both the ascent and key points of the descent as well. Also, I have included a discussion about the history of the area and the story of the peak’s embattled name. Enjoy the footage!! For my video of climbing nearby 14er La Plata Peak, CO.’s 5th highest mtn., go here: • La Plata Peak - NW Rid... . For other high mountain hikes and climbs: • Mountain Hikes and Climbs . Here is a table of contents for this video:

As I mention, this peak has 5 distinct summits that are all well over 14,000'. Believe it or not, the highest of these lower summits, North Massive, would be the 5th highest mtn. in the state if it were considered a separate 14er. This mtn. IS massive, as you could undoubtedly tell from the views along its 3-mile-long summit ridge, among other images. But even so.....I think I'm going to start a campaign to call it "Large-sized Peak" instead. Just kidding, and happy trails!! -CT

Thank you so much for your video. I plan to come to Colorado and hike Mount Massive in August 2023. This video was perfect with all the right information I will need. I hiked Mount Elbert and the DeCaLiBron loop last year and watched a lot of videos. I wish I had seen yours.

Thanks for watching - I'm glad you found this informative. It should be helpful if you plan on doing the east slopes route. I have climbed Elbert and the Lincoln group, but I don't have videos of them yet. I have to get back to them with the cameras - possibly this year.

@@CentennialTreks Yes, I do plan on the east slopes route. I don't mind the 14+ miles at all.

I absolutely LOVED this video! I stumbled upon your channel today. I'm a Fort Collins native, currently living in Arvada, and I wish I could do these hikes. Unfortunately, I'm physically unable to do them. I particularly enjoy that you make longer videos, as I really feel like I'm vicariously climbing a 14-er, courtesy of your hard work. Thank you! 🤝

Thanks, I am glad you liked it. While I try to include plenty of practical information for those intent on climbing these mtns., I love the comments I get from people who are watching it more from just the spiritual, inspirational and aesthetic side of things - like those who used to go on these climbs long ago and come to relive and reminisce, or those who may not be able to go and can use this as their way there.

Thank you for the video! I’m hiking Massive tomorrow and I gained a lot of insight about the trail. I also love the historical facts you share about each peak. Well done!!

I'm glad you appreciate the histories of the mtns. And there is probably a fair amount of snow on the mtn., but I don't know exactly how much and/or how much of an obstacle it will present. Traction equipment may be a plus. Good luck to you!

Great footage! I’m going to hike my first 14er in 1 week! I can’t decide if I should do Elbert or Massive, but I’m leaning 60/40 Elbert, but whatever has better views I want

I've climbed both mtns. twice over the years, and while I suppose I would say Massive is a slightly more interesting climb, the views are a toss-up and probably have more to do with the weather and haze conditions on that particular day.

Good morning! great video. I'm considering Massive next week. Question - what was your time hiking?
@CentennialTreks
@CentennialTreks 10 месяцев назад
If I recall, it took me roughly 6.5 to 7 hours for the round trip, and that was at a pretty quick speed on the east slopes route, without consequential snow. The SW slopes route has become popular also, and is shorter but steeper. I imagine it takes a similar amount of time.

Heck of a hike sir! The views off those ridges are spectacular! Also, I enjoyed the thorough history and will say I would happily oppose any future efforts to change the name. Has anyone ever hiked the entire ridge end to end hitting all of the 5 peaks?
@CentennialTreks
@CentennialTreks 2 года назад
Thanks for being on board with that! And the challenge you pose, which evidently people do sometimes, is termed "Massive mania" in one of the guide books I use. You begin at a TH on the north end of the mtn., ascend up and along the entire stretch of the ridge and visit not just the 5 14,000'+ summits, but also 4 lower ones for 9 altogether. Then you descend to a TH on the south end, which requires pre-arranged transportation. In total this is about 12 miles with ~5,000' in elevation gain, which isn't too extreme, but it involves lots of off-trail route-finding both lower and higher.

@@CentennialTreks Now that sounds like my kind of hike! If only because of the name... Thanks for the info! Might have to do a channel collab one of these days!
@CentennialTreks

And to think - it could have been called "some-other-name mania." And yeah, I'd be up for that.

Would love to hit a trail with you sometime but I know I wouldn’t keep up. Took me like 13.5 hours to summit Longs and you were a few hours faster based on the video I watched 😂
@CentennialTreks
@CentennialTreks 2 года назад
Do you mean 13.5 hours to get to the top, or that long for the entire trip including the descent?

Politicians and interest groups always seem eager to change established mountain names as we are seeing today. Very annoying. Back to the mountain itself. It’s still on my to-do list. Just did Elbert recently but this looks more interesting. May take SW slope instead for less mileage
@CentennialTreks
@CentennialTreks 2 года назад
1) Yes, it is. 2) This mtn. does have perhaps more interesting terrain - as its upper reaches are a bit more rugged. I imagine the SW slopes route is a bit more rugged (steeper, for sure) on its lower stretches also. But it's only significantly shorter if you can make it to the North Half Moon Creek TH by vehicle and not have to walk a long ways on the road. Or, if you're into the idea of a "full tour," you could go up one side, come down the other, and walk the 2 or 3 miles on the road.
@rugged9769
@rugged9769 2 года назад
Did the SW Slope route today. It’s steep for sure, but one gets rewarded with great views of mountains to the west and south. Drove my crossover with 7.6 inch clearance to about 0.8 miles from 4WD TH, making whole trip about 9.5miles with 4200ft gain. It’s a good one. One other note, there are so many good disperse camping spots along Halfmoon road that one can find a spot even arriving late Friday evening, as I did

Excellent, I'll have to go that way if I do that one again.
