@@SVSeeker have you ever tried the Dyslexie font? I have a cousin who has serious dyslexia, to the point that he couldn't graduate highschool despite being one of the smarter people I know... That Font was game changing for him.
@@SVSeeker Hello Doug. The medical profession has the adage ‘see one, do one, teach one’. I think there’s nothing better than explaining the situation, point or step or whatever to someone else (best) or something else (ok) to test my understanding. If you can do so the next day then the learning has likely stuck. At the end of a learning session try to summarise what you’ve learned by explaining it to another person or even an object (but out loud) and start the next session by trying to remember the previous leaning. Being dyslexic is a good thing in my book. I’m severely dyslexic… We think outside the box. Not apart of the herd, we come up with creative ways to get things done. I enjoy being, different… Love your show my brother! Good luck with getting that piece of paper. 👍🏼😎
@@SVSeeker Exactly. Your brain is just wired a bit different and that lets you contribute in a different way. Dyslexia lets me visualize things in 3d better than most people. Bad fonts still trip me up if I'm not careful or coffee deprived. I can also navigate 3d spaces pretty well and judge volume at a glance, so packing things into a container efficiently is second nature for me. I did tutoring for electrical theory after I did it to become an electrician and they had me do training to help know how to teach the students effectively. Since you're being sure to learn the material in a way that will actually give you a functional understanding of it with the hands on learning, you are doing what the test is intending to do, so it's just going to be getting through dealing with their jargon and terminology for the test. The good news is that doing that, even though it doesn't feel like it, will reinforce some of the material. Not much, but a few things are going to stay in there. Now the real question is are you going to go with a tricorn, bicorne, or more modern hat for your captain's portrait? Eyepatch is optional.

@@SVSeeker If coast guard medical works like FAA medical, consider getting a consult first. Don't know CG process at all, but if you go through FAA process w/o being certain of the outcome in advance, you can get seriously jammed up jumping through hoops for fix.

In a very similar mode, as I study for my private pilot practical tests. Your well documented journey from just having a dream to piloting a your own craft has definitely played a part in my decision to "sail" the skies. Thank you!

Doug, I have been inspired by you ever since i stumbled across your channel ( thanks Dangar lol). A lot of your beliefs I already have lived by, however things that have always struck me are:, your go to attitude, your humbleness, ( is that even a word ? ) the fact that even tho $$$ is likely not an issue, you do so much yourself or use materials that are recycled and now disclosing your ambition to become a licensed Captain whilst afflicted with dyslexia just proves that you are one to inspire many others. Just remeber the license you're getting is a national near coastal license, if you want to use it outside of the USA you'll need to add many more elements and STCW certs to it to be the master. The license you're getting is for small passenger vessels like fishing charters, dive boats, sail boats charters ect. When you cross boarders into another country or internationally the requirements for licensing changes for commercial vessels, which I'm not sure that you are. Just an FYI, something to look into depending on your plans! Love the boat!
Study the practice questions and with the plotting skills you have you are golden. After over 40 years of boating, live aboard, and now trailer able trawler I finally sat for the exam. It needs updated desperately, who still uses manila rope, but a good primer. Particularly the rules. You may be the only one out there that knows them at any given time. Good luck.
I passed my USCG Capt Lic last year. My recommendation is to actually sit in a classroom. If the classroom isn't for you, flash cards and a buddy to quiz you would be helpful. My test was 200 questions plus the chart plotting, and it took me 6 hours total including several breaks between the 4 different tests. It's a long day of concentration, but I went into it totally calm and calculated. I closed my eyes and did deep breaths right before we started to get the oxygen into my brain for the task ahead. Agree if you struggle to learn through text you need a visual representation so maybe someone here can help coach you.. i think a video of you learning something new would be inspiring
I'm having to retake my HAM radio license for Technician. I let it slip because I thought the General took over the license time line. I'm a little dyslexic, but I can read faster than a 5th grader, but retaining it is harder. And now there are about 4 times as many questions as before. At 69 my brain doesn't work as well as it one did. So, I know you will get your license as will I.
I'd make a good doctor, it's just I don't have any patience. Doctors practice, so do musicians. It's in the doing. You practice what you learn. Hmm! What we preach as well. Hmm! All the best.
hey, I grew up in Pensacola FL, still have family there. If your still in town don't forget to check out the the Naval aviation museum on Naval air station Pensacola (open to the public). And if you want something to eat check out joe patties seafood market for some really good seafood or go to Peg Leg Pete's on Pensacola Beach, best oyster bar in town!
I absolutely agree about the Naval Air Station museum. And I have been to Joe Petty’s a number of times. I’m just not much for oysters, so I’ll skip them Peg Leg. :)
The part that scared me off trying for a USCG 6-pack license is needing to renew every 5 years (I can get through it once but I really don't want to be dealing with it over and over and over... maybe every 10 years I could deal with)
Two exams down. Think I did ok. And two to go. ....reading every question and possible answer, slowly, out load, and often two or thier times. The proctor on the other side of my laptop camera is likely laughing there ass off and calling other folks it the office to come watch this idiot. : )

As someone diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, hang in there I know for me atleast it can be a real struggle with test and other things where book work is required... may your path be a easy as possible 🙏
I had a family doctor for about 40 years and we became very good friends. He once confessed to me that he hated reading, because he was very dislexic. He was a great doctor though. When I was in my mid 30's I went back to school to study computer science. There was a young man in my class that was a superb programmer. Give him a problem and he immediately saw the solution, he was also very dislexic. Fortunately our school had a program where someone would read the reading assignments to him. Now we have software that does it.
@@SVSeeker My daddy had a cousin that was essentially illiterate. I was about 11 or 12 and we were over at the cousins place. I had gotten my allowance that day and spent some of it on comic books. The cousin looked at what I was reading and asked dad "Why do you let your kid read that garbage?" My dad just looked at my comic books and said "at least he's reading".
My wife has dyslexia. Like you, she's developed amazing techniques to compensate. I'm happy to help you study for that license if you want. You're not far from where I live near Pirates Cove. Hope you still have my card. Cheers, Larry
Howdy Larry! Thanks I appreciate the offer but I have all of the resources I need. Very happy that it is not a time limited test. And dyslexia is also my superpower. It tosses a thousand ideas my way every day, and some of them like "Build a Big Steel Boat" are not so crazy. : )
Hey with my dyslexic I use my phone all the time. Depending on where you're reading it from, if you're reading it from a PDF file on your computer, there's a dyslexic font. It makes a huge difference if you can get it in that it'll make headway. But if I'm reading from books, I'll take a picture with my phone and use Google lens to read it back to me. And then I will save it over to my notes so I don't have to scroll through with the blah blah blah
If their test anything like the FAA or the EPA 609 test. Study everything multiple times, 1 answers is going to be completely wrong, one kinda right, and one exactly right.
Never took a flight test, but it certainly was not a walk in the park. After weeks of study and practice I took the test. Now I wait for the results. : )
I have watched your viedos from the beginning My first comment, I too am very dyslexic and I have never understood why it doesn't have a simple name like mom pop bob. Best of luck with USCG capt. It has taken me about 10 min to type this.
Hey doug you could also be ADD... Heaps of people are undiagnosed. Might be a little bit of Ritalin when you need to read something could make a world of difference. Did for me. Diagnosed at 42...

I took the U.S. Coast Gaurd 6-PAC LICENSE and was very disheartened... NO hands on at all. 😮 Some people couldn't even drive a car, even less could park one !

Yeah its a good idea to get a ticket under your belt. I'm guessing they will class you as a passenger vessel. I know quite a few guys have a tough time getting their certs and writing tests for the ticket they are going for. They have the practical experience its second nature. There are guys out there with the book smarts, but they are the shittiest skippers.
I know exactly what you’re talking about. I took singing lessons from a captain that didn’t know the term midship. It has never sailed in anything more than 3 foot seas.
Good for you. Nice to be legal. Like getting your pilot's license. The flying is a blast but the school work sucks. I never finished. Don't be me man. You got it.
